1. Music video analysis- Dr Dre- Doctor
The video that I have chosen to analyse is Dr Dre- Doctor. This is because I have
looked through artist that are in my genre witch is Hip Hop. I am going to use
Andrew Goodwin’s (1992) theory of how to analyse a music video for this song I have
chosen. Goodwin said that there are 5 aspects that we should take into consideration
when analysing music videos. I am going to use these 5 aspects and go through
them individually to analyse my video choice.
Thought Beats- Seeing the sound
The beginning of the video starts with shots of the waves crashing at the shore. This
is an effective technique as this amplifies the importance of the song, as the waves
crashing suggest the anger and meaningfulness of the song itself. There is no
dialogue yet or lyrics however the sound of
the waves helps give off this important
atmosphere. We then see some shots of the
artist himself Dr Dre. The fact that we see the
start almost straight away is used to attract
his audience. He is the Trademark. This is an
element to the video that a lot of artist use
because this then gives the audience instant
knowledge to whose song it is this will help
them become engaged in the video.
After this we then get a split screen shot, one side is dre himself and the other is flash
back of his experience in the music business. The fact that we get this shot allows the
audeicne to rerlate to the artist. Goodwin says
that songs can be seen as stories and the
artist the storyteller, making the music video
a two communication device – them telling
us a story and we listening. This suggests that
the audience can no rerlate themselves to
dre. This makes the audicence become more
interested and the fact they would bnow have
a personal connection tio the video will make it more popular. Also when tis shot is
on screen there is diegetic sound of gunshots from the flashbacks clips this can
suggest theat the video may be emotional and dre need company.
Narrative and Performance

2. We then preceed to see dre in a fast car driving
faster and faster untill he eventually crashes.
Goodwin says that we only get a gist of the
meaning of the song and then tend to make up our
own idea of what is being told – An negotiated view
of a text. The fact that wee don’t know why he has
dopne this allows the audience to make up there
own interpretation of the video. This can helpm people relate to ther video. Where
the song itself is like a story and the video is like a film this gives the video coherent
repeatability. This is where the narrative and performance work hand in hand its
make it easier for the audience to watch over and over without loosing interest. In
this case the artist is acting as a participant. Eminem plays a big part withing this
video. However near the end of the vidoe when dre is brought back to life we then
see a period of the video where is going through the rehabilitation period whilst
rapping about his struggles. This gives of the idea
that the video and song is trying to tell the audicene
that no matter how bad life gets and all of your
problem affect you, there is always a chance to get
back up and become stronger. This can help relate
the audeicne members individually who have gone
through some hard times and that this video gives
them the motivations to not give up and become strong again.
The Star Image
The start images is another vital aspect of music videos the faact that dre has been
shown a lot acts as his trademark, it gets the audeicne interested in him and makes
them want to listen to more and more. The is film uses Meta Narrative this is a big
story that describes the development of the star over time. This helps the audeicne
relate.
Relations of visuals to the song-
There are three ways in which music videos work to prmote there song. But after
looking at these 3 ways I have decided that this song uses an illustrative techniwue to
promote the song. This is where the music video uses a set of images and shots to
illustrate the meaning of the lyrics and genre, this is something that is used most
commonly. The video anchors the dialoug the the shots this allows us to follow the
narrative and allows us to relate. This can make a video a lot more popular. Thjis is
something that I am thinking about doing in my video.

3. Technical Aspects-
Editing- The music video uses a range of editing tools to emphasis certain moods
within the vidoe for example one of the main one is that where the video is at the
part when dre is driving the car fast at the beginning of the video before the crash
the cuts within the video are lots more frequent. TRhis is because this build up the
tension and excitement before the big crash climax, this contrast to when dre is in
hospital they tent to uses more long takes and less cuts, this helps build emotion.
The switch between these two techniques allows the video to become more
interesting because the modds are amplified.
Lighting and colour- They do this technique with the lighting and colour aswell, they
change it to fit the mood so people can easily adjust to the different atmospheres
within the videeo. For example-
Foe example in the end minute of the song when dre has been rehabilitated and he
back to his normal self and is stronger
than ever the lighting is bright and high
key. This suggest that although the times
have been bad and they have scarred him
for life, he has finally come to terms with
it and is finally going to move forwards.
The bright lghting helps lift up the veiwers
mood and motivate them to make a change and keep moving forwards.
This contrasts to when the mood in the video is bad, for example when he is in
hospital they tend to use a more low key
lighting as this tends to be the
vonevntions for when something is dull
and bad. Although the lighting isnt really
dark its a lot darker than near the end of
the video. This makes the feel of the
video be amplified to the audience.

Overall this video has used manmy key elemkents to kake this vuideo succsessful and
rerlatable and relatable to the audeicne. When I come to making my video I am
going to adopt some of these ideas and techniques so that I can make my video just
as good.
