2. Getting Song Usage Permission
As I am producing a music video, I needed
to get permission to use my chosen song.
Using Wikipedia, I discovered the record
label that the song was recorded with,
‘’Creation Records’’. I sent them a
message via their Facebook page and they
put me in contact with the Performing
Rights Society who are the copyright
holders for the song.
I filled out a form on the PRS website:
https://www.prsformusic.com and they
granted me permission to use the song
for my production.
3. Production Techniques
Filming in first person allows the audience to see things from that persons perspective. If done effectively and correctly, it can
enhance the viewing experience and make the audience feel like they are that character and a part of the story. Filming from this
perspective in any form isn’t very common, which is one reason why I want to film my music video in this way, creating a more
unusual and creative video.
Examples of a POV shot:
Video of walking and looking around the beach: https://www.newsflare.com/video/304953/pov-shot-along-the-beach-in-
barcelona
Exploring London POV shot:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wzDOg93RDM
Cutting on the beat: Cutting clips on the beats in the music or at the start of a lyric fully links the audio to the footage making the
video run smoother and look more complete.
Creative Transitions: Using a few creative transitions makes the video more interesting to watch and can make it look more
professional. Transitions can also help to emphasise an emotion when used in the correct way for example a slower fade
transition would emphasise sad emotion whereas a quicker snappier transition could emphasise a fun, happy emotion. I want to
try and included a few more creative transitions in my video as I didn’t really do that in my first music video and it is a skill I would
like to practice at.
Colour Grading: Colour grading is a video editing technique. It is used to change the way the colours look. Using this technique
helps to set the mood and tone for your video based on what you change. I aim to use colour grading to help emphasise the
happy and fun mood/feelings that I want my video to show.
4. Artist Research
Artist Name: The Boo Radleys

Brown, and Rob Cieka.
The Boo Radleys were an English alternative rock band

the shoegazing and britpop movements and covered
many genres. In 1991 they were signed by Alan

career and split up in 1999. During their time in the
industry they had 1 top 10 single, “Wake Up Boo!”,
which charted at number 9 and remained there for 2

“Wake Up!”. The band produced 6 studio albums and 5
EPs during their time.

The Weeknd – False Alarm music video
- The video is an action based video with lots of violence and different things happening like what
you would see in a movie. The whole video is filmed in first person from the perspective of one of
the bad guys. Filming using a POV shot makes it so the viewer feels like they are playing that
character and taking part in the events, with this MV being full of dangerous action this makes it
more exciting to watch. People are likely to come back view it multiple times.
- The clips often have the persons hands showing with them usually holding an object or doing
something, this makes the POV more realistic. This is something I will need to do in my music
video.
- The lighting throughout the whole video is pretty dark. The video is set during the night so the
lighting effects add to this factor.
- Special effects are used a lot to show blood, gunshots etc.
- The pace of the video matches up perfectly with the pace of the song, when the song hits the
chorus and speeds up, the more intense action starts, when the verses play, the action calms
down. Matching the events in the video to the speed of the music is something I need to consider
for my own video.

Duke Dumont – ‘’I got you’’ music video
- One section of this video is filmed in a beach location. During this part the colours are so vibrant and the
clips are filled with positive vibes. For my video I need to make the colouring as bright as possible and
make the clips as fun as they can be to achieve this same energy. If the day of filming isn’t that sunny I
will need to edit the video to brighten it up.
- The POV filming seemed really realistic because of the amount of camera movements involved. Making
the camera move around a lot to mimic actual head movements is something I will need to do for my
music video to achieve the full effect of this filming technique.
- The cuts between each clip happen on the beats in the song making the video match perfectly with the
music and help it to flow better. This is an editing technique that I will need to use for my own video.
- The use of POV filming makes this video more engaging for the audience as it draws them in and puts
them in the position of the person in the video.
- This video also incudes a couple transitions. The transition to the bright and colourful scenes is creative
and effective as it emphasises the idea that this is a VR world. It’s also a smooth change from one scene
to another. More creative transitions are something I need to consider for my video.
- There use of colour contrast between the real world and VR world is effective as it helps to emphasise
the idea that it is a VR world and it also helps to make the VR parts seem more brighter, fun and free.
Using colour and lighting to help set the scene/mood in this way is something I need to highly consider
for my own MV.

Basto – “Hold You” Music Video
- This video contains a lot of simple transitions of the same style. There is a block colour that slides from
the top and bottom and meets in the middle and then opens up again pretty fast. As the video is filmed
from a first person perspective this gives off the idea that you’re blinking. It is also a smooth and quick
transition between clips and it is done on a beat to make it fit perfectly with the music. As my video will
be in this perspective this type of transition is something I will consider using myself.
- The video contains some effects. Throughout the video there is a slight blur around the edge of the clips.
This gives off a more magical/daydream type vibe. They also added some lens flare to a few of the clips.
Using effects in this way is something I will consider for my own video, especially the lens flare.
- The video also has a second person featured throughout the entire sequence. This helps to increase the
audience appeal and the feel of the video as it becomes more interesting and fun with another person
involved. Having a second person in my video as a friend figure is something I will highly consider doing.
- There is a connection between the start and finish of the video. The video ends in the same place it
started, creating a loop. This also adds to the daydream like feel this video has as its almost like nothing
actually happened. Having the video end in the same place or in a similar way to the beginning is creates
a type of closure to the video and I think this would work really well with my own MV.

10. Research Analysis
• What common features do the researched products have?
Music Videos:
• For the POV shots in the music videos, they have lots of camera movements, as if you are looking
around, and hands are often visible, this creates are more realistic POV.
• The clips all match up with the audio perfectly by having the transitions or certain things, like gun
shots or a door closing, happening on a beat in the music.
• They also all have a colour effect/filter to either make the clips darker or brighter to help set the
mood even better.
Singles CD Covers:
• The majority of the covers I looked at feature the main artist.
• They all include the song name and it stands out well on the majority of the covers.
• When the artist is featured on the cover, their names are not on there.
• The majority of the covers have a simple design and are not heavily edited.
• What aspects of the research will you include within your on work?
In my music video I will try to include lots of camera movements and make sure hands and legs/feet are
shown often to increase the effect of the first person perspective. I will also match up the clips with
beats in the music so the video runs smoothly. I may use a colour effect and/or filter to increase the
vibrance of colours in my clips. For the CD cover I plan on having a simple design to keep the chilled and
happy vibe that I am going for. I also plan on included the song name on the cover and possibly having
the music video performers featured on it to.

Answers:
The most common answers I received were fish and chips, and ice-cream. I also got answers of
donuts, sausage, and candy floss.
In my video, as it will be a first person pov of a day out at the beach, I plan on having a couple
eating clips. This will help me decide which foods to include that will relate to the majority of
people.
14. Questionnaire Analysis
Question: What are your favourite seaside activities?
Answers:
The most common answers I got were walking along the beach and building sandcastles. I also
had a few answers of going in the arcade, swimming, and playing beach games.
In my video I plan on having first person pov of doing some fun activities, these responses will
help me decide what I can do.
15. Questionnaire Analysis

Answers:
The majority of people said they prefer going to the coast with another person. This means that
in my video I will include another person as a friend figure.
