The document outlines plans for a music video for the song "Off-beam" by artist Leaping Tiger. It discusses choosing the obscure title to reflect the song's mood without lyrics. The target audience is 15-30 year olds. Camera shots and movements like close-ups, pans, and tilts will be used to achieve a "movie-like" effect. Scenes will be filmed of Leaping Tiger walking through Auckland City at different times of day, with natural lighting. The video will have a somber color palette and be edited to the beat of the song. It aims to have an ambiguous style with no fixed storyline, like the song.

Concept Plan, music video
1. CONCEPT PLAN
THE TITLE:
The title of the song is, ‘Off-beam’, our artist, Leaping Tiger chose this because it is
obscure, as there are no lyrics in the song, there really is free range when it comes
to selecting the title. As it does not have to reflect any lyrics in the song, but instead
the vibe/mood it gives off when listened to. It reflects and emotes the music, whilst
remaining simple but effective. The title itself is synonymous with the meaning
‘disoriented’, which is the main theme of the song.
OUR TARGET AUDIENCE:
Our target audience for ‘Leaping Tiger’ and this music video is for people aged 15-
30, so really young adults, whilst also branching out to the beginnings of the middle
aged audience. This is our selected target audience, because these people are in
the age range that listen to artist similar to Leaping Tiger, e.g. artists like Flume. We
wouldn’t want to create a song/video for a generation too old, because there is a
high change they would not enjoy it/watch it in the first place. However if we were to
direct it at a younger audience, being pre-teens and younger, it could displease the
target audience we have selected, which could associate ‘Leaping Tiger’ as being
an artist for young people/children.
THE CONVENTIONS I WILL INCLUDE IN MY MUSIC VIDEO ARE:
Camera Shots:
For this music video, we want to achieve a ‘movie like’ effect, meaning we want it to
look like a proper production, and not a typical amateur attempt at making a video,
which can often be the case with school tasks. Some camera shots we want to
include to help achieve this are close ups, wide shots, high and low angles, mid
shots, and establishing shots if the location changes a lot. This not only will put
emphasis on the artist, but also his surroundings and environment, allowing a
bigger picture to be created.
Camera Movement:
Again, to help achieve this movie like look, it’s essential that we include different
movements, and to a high degree of efficiency and skill. We are aiming to include
tracking shots, pans and tilts to do so. It can also be noted that it is best to shoot at
24fps to make it look more authentic. As well as adding Widescreen black bars at
the top and bottom of our shots in order to give the ‘movie look’ that music videos
like Never Catch Me and Lift me Up had.
Mise-en-scene:
Since we are filming our music video for Leaping Tiger in the CBD/Auckland City,
the Mise-en-scene for each scene/shot at this stage is not 100% certain, and
2. instead we will film what we see on the days production is in progress. This way we
a more authentic effect can be made, and it also fits in with the title. What we do
know though, is that our Artist will feature in shots, and his clothing will be similar to
how he dressed in our studio images, consisting of shirts, hats and jeans. He will
probably have minimal props, as they are not essential at this stage, only he is.
Editing:
When our video will be edited, our editor, either Waka, Jacob or Myself will make
sure the 24fps is effective, and add black bars on either side, giving it the film look.
Thought-beats are something we are definitely considering to use, because the
music video seems more sharp, classy and entertaining when it is edited with the
music that is heard. We will also include jump cuts, cross dissolves, as they help
transition scenes and shots well, as we are trying to give a sense of continuity
between certain shots and scenes.
Lighting:
The lighting will mainly be natural, as we are filming outside predominantly at this
stage. We can alternate between day and night to ensure that it is interesting, as
the introduction of city lighting from lampposts, buildings and advertising can look
aesthetically pleasing as well.
Sound:
We don’t plan on having any extra sounds, apart from ‘Leaping Tiger’s’ track, ‘Off-
beam’. However this sound will be important, because the beat, rhythm and other
facts or the song will most likely have influencing factors and help to determine how
the video is shot and edited.
Colour:
We don’t multiple colours, unlike our advertisements, we want the video to be very
real and taken seriously, so the colours will most likely be greys, blacks, whites,
blue, all somber colours but ones that are still pleasing to look at and appreciated
when watching.
THE GENRE CONVENTIONS I WILL INCLUDE IN MY FILM ARE
Disjuncture: Our music Video will not be having a fixed storyline which we follow in
relation to the song. Just like the song, our video will be ambiguous.
‘Movie Look’: The music video will be filmed in 24fps, quite low dim dark and have
black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. To give the authentic movie look.
Andrew Goodwin: A relationship between the visuals either illustrating, amplifying
or contradicting the lyrics.
Music Genre conventions: Long Panning shots with the use of tripod and a
stabilising application will have a more authentic look.
Stark mise-en-scene: Quite dark and low lit shots which also give off the
ambiguous and magnanimous look we are going for.
3. Thought Beats: The video will be cut to the beat of the music. Which will be used
throughout the music video.
BRIEF SYNOPSIS:
Our story line is simple, it consist of Leaping Tiger walking throughout Auckland
City, seeing different buildings, people and objects. The type of music video is that
of ‘Disjuncture’ meaning it does not directly relate to the song or meaning of said
song. This allows us freer reign as a group, something we all agree on and are
happy with. As he walks through town, he will be included in numerous wide and
mid shots, allowing the city and its happenings to be seen as well as himself. It
starts off with him walking to Silo park, and throughout the music video it will show
him in different parts of the park, perhaps at a different time in the day also. We do
know for sure, at this stage, that the music video will conclude with several wide
landscape shots, showing the surroundings once and for all, before cutting to a
close-up shot of Leaping Tiger, looking directly into the lens of the camera. It will
the cut to black, in time with the music, showcasing that is it the complete end of
the music video.
CHARACTERS AND NAMES:
Leaping Tiger/Jacob, playing himself. A musician walking through the city, seeing
all the different types and kinds of people. No plans currently to add any other
people/characters, but is subject to change.
PRACTICALITIES OF FILMING/CONTENT:
I believe that our idea is perfectly realistic and do-able, as we know the area well,
and have all filmed works there before. There should not be any health and safety
issues, as our artist is not doing anything that could harm him, as we don’t want
anything to jeopardise the shoot our artist. We are unsure if we need other
actors/actresses but could possibly use Waka or myself if it becomes a necessity at
the time and we have no others planed. Our locations are easy to film, as we have
all been to Silo park and the city numerous times before, and it is a nice
environment to film in, and easily accessible to the public population.
