Photography is used across many industries to promote products, document events, and tell stories. In advertising, photography shows products being used by celebrities or in intriguing scenes to promote them. Fashion photography captures clothing in idealized settings to showcase new lines. Music uses photos of performances for reviews and album artwork. Sports photography memorializes significant moments and matches. Photojournalism employs dramatic images to illustrate news stories and current events. Fine art photography aims to evoke emotion in viewers through artistic composition and techniques like black and white film.
2. Advertising Industry
The Advertising Industry uses
photography a lot in order to promote
the product to the target audience.
Some advertisers use photos which
show celebrities using the product
whereas others may use an image that
is irrelevant but interesting. The
advertisement images can be seen in
many places including billboards and
online. Some advertisers use images to
get a message across to people for
example the NHS have lots of posters
to discourage people from smoking.
3. Fashion Industry
In the fashion industry photography is
used to show new ranges of clothing
or accessories. The images often show
the clothes being worn in the
environment that they are intended to
be worn or the images may show the
product being shown off on a cat walk.
The fashion industry use photos as
they can manipulate the clothing or
accessory to look perfect for the shot
and even use editing software to make
it look better. Photographer Steven
Meisel takes most of his shots against
a plain background and edited to black
and white.
4. Music Industry
Most, if not all musical events such as
gigs, festivals or club nights have many
photographers there shooting either
the artist playing or the crowd
watching. Photography is also used in
the music industry for album artwork,
most modern album artwork is edited
but at one point all album covers were
still images. The photos are used in
magazines and online, many events
reviews include images of the crowd
enjoying the music as well as the
venue and artists. Mick Hutson takes
pictures of the artist, not always whilst
performing though. Most of his shots
show the artists away from the stage
in a different setting.
5. Sports Industry
Photography is used a lot in the sports
industry, the photos can be used to
remember the games or used to show
significant moments such as sprinters
crossing the finish line. Newspapers
and news websites often have lots of
sports images on them as they are
interesting to look at and a large
audience enjoy watching sports. There
are also many magazines that focus on
just one sport and these feature lots of
photos. Bob Martin is a sports
photographer who takes photos of all
kinds of sports, his work is used all
over the world online and in
newspapers/magazines.
6. Photo journalism
Photography is used in photo
journalism to show people what the
story is about, it could show a person,
place or any object that is in current
news and will often include a small
caption. The photos are usually
dramatic and interesting as they need
to entice the reader. Most of the
images I found are taken in black and
white. When an image is used in a
print article or online the viewer will
see the picture before beginning to
read the story. Romano Cagnoni is a
photographer that took black and
white images, mainly of people in the
world suffering from illness, the effects
of natural disasters or war. His work is
shown on his website as well as many
newspapers.
7. Fine Art Photography
Explain how and why photography is
used in this industry .
Fine art photography is used to bring
emotion to the viewer, it is made to
look like art by the way it is staged this
is why a lot of the images are in black
and white. Ansel Adams for example
took most of his photos in black and
white and some of them looked as
though they had been painted due to
the exposure. Fine art photography is
usually used in gallery's or as calendars
etc.
