2. INTRODUCTION
• THE DEFINITION OF CONJUNCTION MAY ALSO BE EXTENDED
TO IDIOMATIC PHRASES THAT BEHAVE AS A UNIT WITH THE
SAME FUNCTION, E.G. "AS WELL AS", "PROVIDED THAT".
• A SIMPLE LITERARY EXAMPLE OF A CONJUNCTION IS: "THE
TRUTH OF NATURE, AND THE POWER OF GIVING INTEREST"
• A CONJUNCTION MAY BE PLACED AT THE BEGINNING OF A
SENTENCE "BUT SOME SUPERSTITION ABOUT THE PRACTICE
PERSISTS
4. TYPES OF SENTENCES
• SIMPLE SENTENCE-
A SIMPLE SENTENCE MUST HAVE A SINGLE CLAUSE (A SINGLE VERB) WHICH IS
INDEPENDENT, AND IT CANNOT TAKE ANOTHER CLAUSE.
EXAMPLE:
I ALWAYS WANTED TO BECOME A WRITER. (ONE CLAUSE – ONE VERB)
• COMPOUND SENTENCE-
A COMPOUND SENTENCE MUST HAVE MORE THAN ONE INDEPENDENT CLAUSE WITH
NO DEPENDENT CLAUSES. SOME SPECIFIC CONJUNCTIONS, PUNCTUATION, OR BOTH
ARE USED TO JOIN TOGETHER THESE CLAUSES.
EXAMPLE:
I ALWAYS WANTED TO BECOME A WRITER, AND SHE WANTED TO BECOME A DOCTOR.
(TWO INDEPENDENT CLAUSES – TWO VERBS).
5. TYPES OF SENTENCES
• COMPLEX SENTENCE-
A COMPLEX SENTENCE ALSO HAS MORE THAN ONE CLAUSE BUT OF ONE
THEM MUST BE AN INDEPENDENT CLAUSE AND THE OTHER/OTHERS
MUST BE (A) DEPENDENT CLAUSE(ES). THERE ARE ALSO SOME
PARTICULAR CONNECTORS FOR THE CLAUSES OF A COMPLEX SENTENCE
TO BE CONNECTED.
EXAMPLE:
I KNOW THAT YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO BE A WRITER. (HERE, A
DEPENDENT CLAUSE IS FOLLOWED BY A CONNECTOR AND AN
INDEPENDENT CLAUSE. THE OTHER WAY AROUND IS ALSO POSSIBLE.)
7. CONJUNCTIONS
JOINING WORDS OR LINKING WORDS OR CONNECTING WORDS
IT IS A WORD THAT JOINS WORDS , PHRASES , CLAUSES OR SENTENCES.
TO JOIN TOGETHER OR SHOW CONTRAST
“AND” COMBINES PHRASES, SENTENCES AND WORDS.
I’LL WALK THE DOG AND FEED THE BIRD.
“BUT” SHOW DIFFERENCES.
YOU WERE INVITED ,BUT YOU CAN’T GO.
“OR” GIVES CHOICES.
I’LL GO TO THE PARK OR GO TO THE ZOO.
“IF” SHOW CONDITIONS.
I’LL GO TO THE PARK , IF YOU COME WITH ME.
10. COORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS

11. SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS
• JOINS A SUBORDINATE (DEPENDENT) CLAUSE TO A MAIN
(INDEPENDENT) CLAUSE.

12. CORRELATIVE CONJUNCTION
• CORRELATIVE CONJUNCTIONS ARE PAIRED WORDS. IT JOINS WORDS
,PHRASES OR CLAUSES HAVING RECIPROCAL OR COMPLEMENTARY
RELATIONSHIP.
• EITHER……OR, NEITHER…..NOR, NOT ONLY…….. BUT ALSO ETC.
EX- BOTH THE PINK AND BLUE ARE NICE COLOURS.
13. UNDERLINE THE CONJUNCTIONS.
• THOUGH SHE IS A MILLIONAIRE, SHE IS VERY HUMBLE.
• THEY CANCELLED THE MATCH BECAUSE IT RAINED.
