A target audience is usually defined by gender and age.
Additional elements include:
.rural or urban
.ethnicity
.family status
.level of education
.special interests
RESEARCH
Primary-
questioning members of your target audience and use
responses to inform your planning.
Secondary –
using existing audience profile data to inform your planning.
OTHER TECHNIQUES
Vox pops- to get feedback directly from potential audience
members
Pitch presentation feedback- to get some responses to your film
idea.
An example of this is the information I got about Lucy.
AN EXAMPLE OF THIS IS THE
INFORMATION I GOT ABOUT LUCY.
IDEAL AUDIENCE.
Our target audience would predominately be focussed on the aged 15-25
bracket, this is because the main character is within that age group so
we felt that a younger audience may form a stronger connection with
the main character as they may understand and empathise with him
more.
Another reason for this is that in the research that I’ve done it shows that
the most popular group of people to go the cinema now is the younger
generation this is said to be because of the impact that technology has
on the film industry and the advertising they would see constantly on
social media.
‘Frequent moviegoers tend to own more key technology products than the
general population of adults 18 years and older. Over two-thirds of all
frequent moviegoers (73%) own at least four different types of key
technology products, compared to 55% of the total adult population.
EXAMPLE OF TARGET AUDIENCE
This is Bethany, she is 16 years 6 months old. In her
spare time she enjoys going to festivals, spending
time with friends and watching television. The
program she most enjoys is criminal minds and her
favourite movie is Lucy. I feel she would be a
perfect target audience for our film as her interests
are many of our influences. She also enjoys most
films within our genre of action thriller as she is
interested with the mystery and violence of the
genre.
