The document summarizes market research conducted to help design a new music magazine. A survey of 20 people found that most of the target audience is between 18-29 years old, listens to indie/alternative music 4-8 hours per day on iTunes, and prefers to learn about new releases on social media. While only 25% currently buy music magazines, pricing it around £2.99 and focusing on artist interviews, photos, and social media promotion can help attract new readers. The research provided insights into the target demographic and their music preferences to help make the new magazine appealing.

Market Research Report
As I am going to design a music magazine, I did some market research in order to see what was most
popular out of a number of categories, for example genre of music enjoyed, to get an idea of who
and what I should design my magazine towards. The method I used to do my research was a survey
which gathered quantitive data; I asked ten questions with multiple answers and gained answers
from twenty people.
The first question on my survey was “What is your age”, I offered a number of categories ranging
between under 18 to over 70 and also prefer not to say. In my results I found that 80% of those who
answered were between 18-29 and that 10% were under 18. Due to these results I will target my
music magazine towards those in the category between 18-29.
The second question I asked was “What is your gender?” The choices I offered were “female”,
“male” and “prefer not to say”. I found that 75% of those who answered were female and 25% were
male. Therefore, my music magazine will be targeted towards female but still have aspects that will
attract males.

The next question I answered was “What genre of music do you prefer?” this was an important
question as it would help me decide what kind of magazine to do and what artists I could feature
and would also allow me the chance to gain an insight on magazines which are also similar to my
decided genre. For this question I offered a lot of categories, which were “pop/chart”,
“indie/alternative”, “rock”, “punk”, “RnB”, “Rap” and also “other” in case I hadn’t covered the
participants preferred genre. For this question I gained a lot of results, the most popular answer with
30% was indie/alternative, closely followed by pop/chart with 25% and only a small percentage
chose the other categories. Therefore, my magazine will be aimed mostly toward the
indie/alternative genre with a small aspect of pop/chart music.
Another question was “how often do you listen to music in a day?” the options I gave were “0-3
hours”, “4-8 hours”, “9-12 hours” and “13+ hours”. The most common result was “4-8 hours”.
Therefore, I will know on average the amount of hours that my audience listen to, so will be able to
do certain features such as itunes vouchers or free downloadable tracks to interest the audience.

Another question asked was “how do you prefer to listen to music?” I offered answers ranging from
“itunes” to “youtube” and “Spotify” etc. The most common answer I received was itunes, which
gained 40%. This will again allow me to have certain features such as iTunes vouchers which I will
offer as freebies and advertised on the cover.
My next question was very important as it helped me understand the percentage of people who
actually buy music magazine. “Do you buy music magazines?” was answered “yes” by only 25% and
“no” by 75% this has made me realized that in order for my music magazine to be bought I will have
to ensure that it is really well thought out and designed in order to attract those who do not usually
purchase magazine to purchase them.

“How often do you purchase music magazines?” Was also negatively answered with people only
selecting “every so often”, “rarely” and “never” which again emphasises how I will have to ensure
that my magazine stands out and attracts those who never buy music magazines.
“What price would you spend on a music magazine? (issuely)” was another important
question of mine as it would inform me on the price range in which I would market my idea at. As
70% answered “£2.99 and under” and 30% answered “£3.00-£5.99”, I now know that I will have to
price my magazine between this mark, and more towards the £2.99 price, this price will also fit in
with my target audiences age as it will be in the age range of those under 18 to also those up to 29
so they may not have a lot of money to spend on a magazine.

“What attracts you to music magazines?” was
also a really important question as it would give me an
idea of what I need to focus on when designing my music
magazine. As the most popular answers were
“interviews”, “mentioned artists” and “photographs”,
this has given me ideas of what I need to do when
designing my magazine and when adding on cover lines
as I could mention specific artists and feature
photographs of the artists.
“Where do you find out about new
releases/concerts?” helped me understand
where the majority of people look when
wanting to find out about new information
about music events. With 80% “social media”
was the most popular answer, which has now
helped me as I can then mention different social
Medias and links on my magazine and as a few
people also answered “music websites” I could
then feature other music websites, such as MTV
on the magazine which I create. Therefore, I will
need to market my magazine heavily on social
media, which also suggests that I could also
have an online version.

Overall, my survey has helped me a lot as it has given me more ideas on what I could do and also
gave me more information on what people, who would be my target audience, would prefer and
enjoy. As not a lot of those who answered currently buy music magazine I know that I will have to
really make my magazine stand out and attract those who wouldn’t’t usually buy one, I could do this
by mentioning contemporary stars, or having free stuff with the magazine and use a good
photographs and colour schemes which will attract people to purchase the magazine. I also think I
will focus on mentioning social media in my magazine, such as offering a subscription fee to be able
to read the magazine online which also includes a paper copy of the magazine being posted to the
readers house also, as a lot of people said that they keep updated via social media and a lot of
people also use Spotify/iTunes/YouTube, so I would be able to mention these platforms in order to
increase my magazines popularity.
