The document discusses the target audience research conducted for a music magazine. It involved surveying music magazine readers to understand their interests, interviewing fans of rock/indie music to learn more about their tastes and lifestyles, and analyzing the results. Based on the research, the target audience was identified as 16-20 year old, working class teenagers interested in new artists. Both male and female readers were targeted to expand sales beyond an initial focus only on females. A reader profile was created describing the typical age, activities, spending habits, and characteristics of the target readership.

Identifying the target audience for a music magazine through research
1. Who would be the audience for you media product?
When planning for my magazine at the beginning of my coursework, I carried
out lots of audience research to identify the audience for my magazine. I did
this by research other currentmusic magazines that target a similar audience
to who I wanted to target and my looking at reader profiles of their magazines.
I also carried out a survey on Survey Monkey to find out about whatmy target
audience wanted to see in a music magazine and who they were. Examples of
some of the questions I asked are shown below:
Another way I found out who I wanted my target audience to be, was by
conducting a few interviews with people who like the rock/indie style of music
and who read music magazines currently. By doing this, it helped me
understand further who my target audience were, whatthey were interested
in and how they spent their day to day lives. By doing this, it also allowed me
to spend someone on one time with my audience and get to know them
better so that I could suit my magazineto them better.
Frommy research, I decided who I wanted my target audience to be. My target
audience are teenagers, both male and female froma working class
background. I decided this becauseI got moreresponses fromfemales than
males; therefore I wanted to find a way to attract the male population as well
as females. This is different to whatI originally planned because I planned to
only target females but when planning my magazineI realised that by only
2. targeting females, I would be missing out on sales so by targeting males as well
I am expanding my audience. Furthermore, wanted analysing my survey results
I found that mostresponses werefrom16-20 year olds, thereforethis was the
age range that I decided to target for my magazine. To do this I made my
magazine suited to a younger generation by including new artists and suited it
to the working class by making the magazines only £4.99 a month so that it
was cheaper for teenagers to get. My target audience are also outgoing people
who love to spend time doing the things that they love and who live for the
music.
Fromall of this research, I made a reader profile for my magazine. This
included the typical age of my audience as well as what leisure activities they
take part in, what they spend their money on and who they are as a person.
This gaveme a basis as to whatto include in my magazine and how to attract
my target audience as well.
