The document discusses a milk powder plant established by Amul in 1955. It summarizes:
- Amul was established in 1946 in Anand, India to absorb extra milk produced in winter that could not be sold to Bombay Milk Scheme.
- To address this issue, Amul set up a milk powder plant to process excess milk into products like butter and milk powder using processes like pasteurization, separation, evaporation, and spray drying.
- The plant had components like a bulk cooling tank, separator, pasteurizer, evaporator, spray dryer, and various sensors to measure properties and automation.
2. Introduction of plant
• Anand Milk Union Limited or Amul is
an indian dairy company, based at Anand which was
established in 1946 by Tribhuvandas Patel.
• It was found that the Bombay Milk Scheme could not absorb
the extra milk collected by the Kheda Union in winter, when
the production on an average was 2.5 times more than in the
summer. Thus, even by 1953, the farmer-members had no
assured market for the extra milk produced in winter. They
were again forced to sell a large surplus at low rates to the
middlemen .
• The remedy was to set up a plant to process milk into
products like butter and milk powder. A Rs. 5 million plant to
manufacture milk powder and butter was completed in 1955.
5. FUNCTIONS OF
COMPONENTS
BULK COOLING
TANK
In dairy
farming a bulk milk
cooling tank is a
large storage tank
for cooling and
holding milk at a
cold temperature
until it can be
picked up by a milk
hauler.
6. SEPARATOR
A separator is
a centrifugal
Device that
separates milk in
to cream and
skimmed milk.
7. Pasteurizer
In Pasteurizer certain packaged and non-packaged
foods (such as milk ) are treated with mild heat,
usually less than 100°C (212F), to eliminate
pathogens and extend shelf life.
8. Evaporator
• An evaporator is a
device in a process
used to turn the
liquid form of a
chemical substance
such as water into
vapor.
9. Spray dryer
• Spray drying is a
method of
producing a dry
powder from a
liquid or slurry by
rapidly drying with
a hot gas.
