16. ROLE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IN SCM

expenses etc.
The management identified that the best possible process -the complete suite of SAP
solution
ACHIEVEMENTS POST IMPLEMENTATION-
Planned growth, Better Visibility, Faster Response to market demand changes, Better
Planning, Decision Support, Improving Efficiencies of the processes
17. ROLE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IN SCM- CONTD…
Inventory Management is modernized with the use of technology – with end-to-end cold
storage - (chillers : insulated rail tankers and chilled trucks), refrigerators
A Geographic Information System (GIS) was established to view supply disparities in real
time
Use of multimedia to coach farmers the proper techniques
Going forward, there are plans to enhance the plastic identification cards into smart cards
Amul started its own dedicated online sales channel in 2017. They also collaborate with other
popular e-commerce sites for sales of their products
18. The Distribution Network
Amul products are available in over 500,000 retail outlets across India through its network of over
3,500 distributors
GCMMF transacts on an advance demand draft basis from its wholesale dealers instead of the cheque
system adopted by other major FMCG companies.
Wholesale dealers carry inventory that is just adequate to take care of the transit time from the branch
warehouse to their premises
This just-in-time inventory strategy improves dealers' return on investment (ROI)
19.
20. The Business Model
The network explicitly includes secondary services to the farmer-suppliers
Several of the entities in the network are organized as cooperatives
The distribution network, on the other hand, is quite reasonable with access to rural areas of the
country.
A majority of the suppliers are small or marginal farmers who are often illiterate, poor, and with
liquidity problems as they lack direct access to financial institutions
