3. Social Groups
The social groups I chose to represent were:
• Female
• 16 to 25 year olds
• No set ethnicity
The majority of the models I used were female, to emphasise that it is a music magazine targetting a
female audience as well as all the models being in the targetted age bracket of 16 to 25.
4. Front Cover
With a female target audience,
the hegemonic view in music
magazines is that women are
sexual objects, to be consumed
through the Male Gaze(Laura
Mulvey). However, on the two
covers to the right, this view has
been overturned with women
represented as strong,
independent characters. On my
front cover, I tried to portray
‘ROSE LONDON’ as someone not
consumed by the Male Gaze.
5. Contents Page
With my contents page, with the polaroid of
the male model, I wanted to create an idea
of a ‘Female Gaze’ in which men are the
sexual objects to be consumed. Therefore
the model has his shirt underdone slightly,
pulling at the shirt but without the excessive
show of skin usually found with female
models.
6. Double Page Spread
With my double page spread, I tried to keep in
mind that my target audience is between 16 and
25 years old, a mix of teenagers and young
adults. Therefore I used the same model from
that audience and tried to make the interview a
little more informal to keep more in common
with a teenager’s dialect.
