1. Question 2. How does your media
product represent particular social
groups?
2. • I have represented young females from
the ages 16 to 19 within my magazine
as successful musicians. This connotes
that they are ambitious and goal-
driven. I have shown this strength
through the article on my double page
spread which details the musicians
success. This in ways challenges
negative representations of young
people of today by portraying them as
achievers who work towards success.
The article also reveals aspects of
education, work and ways to succeed
again challenging negative stereotypes.
I have also tried to include aspects of
residual ideology with my page such as,
black and white images and also
dominant ideology such as acoustic
instruments to challenge dominant
ideology and to keep aspects.
• Young females may have been
presented this way in my media product
as a result of more prejudice. Because
16 to 19 year-olds are considered
‘Youths’ however, I have portrayed
‘youths’ much more positively to
address this.
3. • In my media product I have deliberately chosen to use females in my
magazine, not only because my media product is aimed at females but to
also in ways challenge dominant ideology which the genre Blues typically
Is associated with black males than females. I have also used a alternative
representation by creating an older genre (Blues?) and targeting it at a
younger audience.
• However, within this sub-genre, there is an absence of particular types of
people such as younger males. However, there are exceptions to this but it
is however, uncommon. This makes the magazine more realistic as it fits in
with the genre and follows aspects of the typical conventions.
4. Front Cover
• The main image on my front cover features a female
staring directly at the camera with her hand
positioned by her chest. This connotes confidence as
well as passion. The look on the models face also
highlights this and is very direct with the viewer with
connotes a more open maybe emotional nature. I
also used a smoky, grey and white background
behind my model to try and highlight an older feel to
my image as well as challenge the dominant ideology
of today but still keeping it modern and up to date to
appeal to my audience by using a young, fashionable
model on my front cover.
• However, I have not chosen to portray my audience
in this particular way, in fact the subject/genre
displays people this way. As well as the
audience/musicians who like to display themselves
this way (psychographics) what the audience thinks
of themselves. It is an image they convey to the
public which connotes a certain level of passion
which is common to this genre.
5. Contents Page
• The actual content of the text in my
media product conveys young females
as passionate and Succeeders. This is
portrayed in a light-hearted and
perhaps subtle way. I have used many
aspects such as residual ideology,
relaxed clothing which not only fit with
the age group of my audience but also
the genre which is associated with
relaxed clothing. I have also used
aspects from my audience profile such
as older clothing presented to young
fashion of today to attract my
audience.
• An oppositional reading to this may be
that just because people like ‘Blues’
music, it does not make them
emotional or perhaps passionate
towards music. However, the age and
image of people presented in the
media does fit this.
