WHAT IS A CONFLICT?
 Is refers to the expressed struggle between
two or more people who perceive
incompatible goal. Hocker and Wilmot
(1995).
 Is the expression of perceived incompatibility.
 The disagreement between two or more
parties over a certain issues.
 E.g…

INTERCULTURAL CONFLICT
 Refers to the implicit or explicit emotional
straggle between persons of dissimilar
cultures over perceived incompatible values,
norms etc..
 Intercultural conflict occurs when an issue is
seen by two cultures in two contradicting
ways

INTERCULTURAL CONFLICT CON……..
 Both parties will try to solve the problem in a
different way, however, neither one is
accepting the others attempt . E.g.
 The fact that culture is a shared system of
making sense, intercultural conflicts is the
contradiction of the different shared system
of making sense.

TYPES OF INTERCULTURAL CONFLICT
 Hall (2002) suggests that there are three
types of intercultural conflict namely:
 Object conflict.
 Relationship conflict.
 Priority conflict.

OBJECT CONFLICT.
 The term object can refers to anything that
may be perceived intellectually, either
physical or abstract.
 Object conflict involves the conscious or
unconscious disagreements or
misunderstanding about issues
 E.g.

OBJECT CONFLICTS EXAMPLES
 When one of the parties says something in
opposition or to disagree with something.
 For instance ‘ your father objected the police
had arrested you unlawfully.
 “It doesn’t seem natural” he objected.
 Synonyms: protest, against

OBJECT CONFLICT CON…….
 In case of objective conflict, one would ask if
the conflict subject is correct or wrong in the
sense of what is true or false, but not in the
sense of moral judgement.
 It brings the attention to differences in
knowledge about things and ideas.

RELATIONSHIP CONFLICT
 Refers to a disagreement between two
related people from dissimilar cultures.
 Concerns two parties from different cultures
having a relationship.
 It occurs when both parties have different
views of the rights, expectations and
responsibilities, of each party as determined
by different cultural systems of making
sense.

PRIORITY CONFLICT
 It refers to when two parties argue over the
judgement of the relative moral worth of
certain action.
 Unlike in object conflict, in this type of conflict
both parties major concern is about their
feelings about what is good or bad, and the
judgement that reflect a particular moral
order. E.g.

they can reveal values that people and
communities place on different actions as
well as on different people.
