1. Pre-Writing
Introduction :
Definition of sketching :
A simply or hastily executed drawing or painting, especially a preliminary one ,
giving the essential features without the details.
Sketching helps us increase our drawing skill, develop a better sketching skill
in details drawing .
Perks of sketching in my respective course, which is FNBE are to develop my
mind in construction , increase imagination , increase ability to draw out the
real object clearly.
I am writing a process essay about how to sketch a kitchen utensil .
2nd Paragraph :
The kitchen utensil I chose to sketch is slotted turner.
The head of the slotted turner is made from stainless steel, and the handle of
the turner spatula is made from silicone
The design of slotted turner is a combination of square and rectangle
The head of turner is in Square , while the neck and handle is in rectangle
shape .
The surface of the head and neck of the slotted turner is smooth as stainless
steel is a very smooth material.
The handle of the turner can prevent my hand from slipping away .
2. How is this slotted turner used in daily life?
Flip burgers or pancakes
Quickly toss
It can also turn fries or other roasting vegetables
Lift bacons or burger out of the pan and the excess grease drains away .
Handle is made from silicone , which is heat resistant , that can prevent us
from being burnt.
Why did you select this material ?
It is very useful.
It can fry foods and drain away the excessive oil from the foods.
It can maintain our health because it can reduce our daily intake of oily food .
3rd Paragraph :
Drawing tools needed:
1. Pencils with grade 2H, 2B,6B
2. Charcoal pencil
First , I will decide the light source. The light source will be from the side view
of slotted turner .
Then , I will sketch out the base of slotted turner .
-does not have to be perfect
-sketch it lightly
3. - If I sketch too dark , there will be lines that I do not want in the final sketching
I will use the ruler to make sure I draw a straight neck of the turner spatula.
I need to clear my workspace to sketch the slotted turner.
I have to clean and tidy up my table as a workspace.
Then I will place the slotted turner in an empty space in a good position of
lighting.
I will put a torch from the side view of slotted turner as light source for me to
sketch.
This is to ensure that I can get a good vision to sketch out the actual object
An empty and tidy workspace will helps me to develop a peaceful mind to
sketch out the slotted turner.
After sketching out the base , begin to outline the drawing .
Make this very light , I will be darkening it later.
Slowly , darken the outlines , the thickness will be depends on myself .
Making them dark will ensure that they stay in the paper when I erase
anything I don't need.
4th paragraph
The next step will be more complex as I will start to shade it.
I will add shading where the line meets.
Just a small bit of shading on every cross section of the lines give it depth and
weight.
This process is called “weighting” a picture.
4. I will start to shade all the part by using 2B pencil with low pressure.
Then I will use2B pencil to sketch the dimmer area follow by 6B pencil to
sketch the dimmer area.
After that , I will use charcoal pencil to sketch the dimmest part which will
makes the sketching represent the direction of light source.
There are also common mistake in sketching .
One of them is I will find it difficult in making sure the light area and dark area
.
My solution is I can take a photo of the slotted turner in the right position with
right light source.
I can sketch it out by referring the photo and decide the light area and dark
area.
The other common mistake is if my shading isn't quite right , I can take a look
at my tools .
For example, with a regular HB pencil , I will never get the rich shadows that I
need .
I can press as hard as I want , but it just will not go that dark .
So I need to have a very clear mind in which tools I need to use for sketching
Conclusion:
It might takes me about 2 hours to finish it .
5. Process Essay about How to Sketch a Kitchen Utensil
Sketching is drawing made rapidly without too many details to represent an
individual, scenery or idea. It is a freehand drawing process. Sketching helps to
increase my drawing skill, it also helps me to sketch out things accurately-based on
the real thing. The shape and size of the object I sketch out should be evenly. Besides,
sketching brings advantages in my respective course, which is FNBE. One of the
advantages sketching helps me to develop my mind in construction of buildings. It also
increases my imagination and creativity in designing buildings. I am writing a process
essay about how to sketch a kitchen utensil.
The kitchen utensil I chose to sketch is slotted turner. Slotted Turner is a kind
of spatula, but the head of the slotted turner has a depth. The head and neck of the
slotted turner is made from stainless steel, and the handle is made from of heat-
resistant silicone. Perfect for use on non-stick cookware, and the slots efficiently drain
liquids. The surface of the head and neck of turner is smooth as stainless steel is very
smooth and shiny. The slotted turner is odourless. The handle can prevent me from
being burn, the silicone also produces friction which prevent my hand from slipping
away. The function of this slotted turner is flip burgers or pancakes. It can also turn
fries or other roasting vegetables, lift bacons or burger out of the pan and the excess
grease drains away. It is a very useful kitchen utensil in our daily life. It can fry foods
and drains away the excessive oil from the foods. Therefore, it is very healthy because
we can reduce our daily intake of oily food to maintain our health.
6. To start the sketching, I need to have some drawing tools to start it up. First, I
took out three pencils in three different grades which is 2H, 2B and 6B. To shade the
darkest area, I used charcoal pencil. Then, I cleaned and tidied up my table as a
workspace. An empty and tidy workspace helped me to develop a peaceful mind to
sketch out the slotted turner. I placed the slotted turner vertically on my workspace.
Afterwards, I decided the light source. The light source is from the plan of the kitchen
utensil. I used a table lamp as light source for my sketching. This is to ensure that I
can get a good vision to sketch out the actual object. Then, I sketched out the base of
slotted turner. It did not have to be perfect, I had only sketched it lightly. In this step, I
used a ruler to make sure I draw a straight line of the slotted turner’s neck. If I sketched
to dark, there will be lines that I do not want in the final sketching. After sketching out
the base, I began to outline the sketching. I made this very light, then I darkened it
later. Slowly, darken the outlines, the thickness will be depends on myself. This is
because making them dark will ensure that they stay in the paper when I erase
anything I do not need.
The next step will be more complex as I will start to shade it. First, I marked
down the light area and dark area. Then, I started to shade the light area with 2B pencil
with low pressure. Afterwards, I used 2B pencil to sketch dimmer area followed by 6B
to pencil the dimmest area. To make the sketching more real, I used charcoal pencil
to darken the dimmest area of the sketching. There are also few common mistakes in
sketching. One of them is I found it difficult in making sure the light area and dark area.
My solution is I took a photo of the slotted turner in the right position with light source.
It was easier for me to sketch it out by referring the photo. The other common mistake
was if my shading isn’t quite right, I can take a look at my tool. For example, with a
regular HB pencil, I will never get the rich shadows that I need. I can press as hard as
7. I want, but it just will not go that back. So I need to have a very clear mind in which
tools I need to use for sketching.
I used 1 hour to finish my sketching. It took me so long because I have to make
sure the shadow and dark area is right. I am satisfied with my sketching as I took 1
hour to finish it. At first, I found it really hard to determine the light and dark area, but
then I found solution to solve it. I will do this again because it is very useful in my
foundation semester 1.
