6. We can use a black and white sketch to express so much. Typically, sketches
are a rough drawing of something to exhibit ideas or information to others. A
sketch can also be interpreted as a rough, briskly drawn drawing or painting;
especially an introductory one that does not include the details. Since, I am
currently studying in Foundation in Natural and Built Environment, and my goal is
to pursue my masters in Architecture, learning how to sketch will bring my
imagination to a bigger field and open up various perspectives. This essay will be
about the procedure and steps involved in preparing a sketch of my kitchen
utensil.
The object that I have selected is a “high-tech” apple peeler. My mom
bought this “high-tech” machine when she was in Chengdu, China, years ago.
The reason why I chose this apple peeler machine is because there was one day I
came accross this machine when my mom was trying to peel apples for us.I find
this machine new and interesting since I always thought apple peeler was
something else, something like a knife but it is actually not! That was my first time
seeing this sort off machine that I have no clues of it’s serving purpose by it’s
apperance and looking. Here is the procedure. Firstly, I prepared an apple and the
apple peeler. After washing the apple, I fixed the apple onto the prongs that
prevents it from moving around. Last but not least, I started to rotate the handle in
order to peel the apple.
7. Before I start, I cleared my table and arrange everything in an orderly manner.
Next, I prepare the stationaries required for sketching; that includes pencils of
different grades, an eraser, a sharpener, some napkins, A4 papers, and a lamp. In
order to select the best angle, I placed the apple peeler in different perspectives,
trying to figure out the correct angle. I also adjusted the lighting of the table lamp
to observe the shadows formed by the apple peeler.
I began my sketch by outlining with a 2B pencil on an A4 paper. The 2B pencil was
then switched out by a 5B, in order to make dark lines in my sketch. For an even
darker lines and shades, I used a 7B pencil to exhibit the contrast between the
darker and lighter color of my apple peeler. By doing this, my sketch becomes
more realistic and more visually appealing. Additionally, I also utilized the grade
HB pencils, specifically a 2H pencil, to shade the lighter area of the utensil and
occupied the sketch with different shades and textures. To produce the best
outcome of an attractive sketch, I put my focus on the light that is thrown on the
utensil. After that, I used some napkins to transform my rough surfaces into
smoother surfaces.
As I was sketching, I found it difficult to sketch the handle and the prongs
because I had to use a grade 6B pencil to shade the handle, while using a grade
HB pencil to shade the prongs. This was because I wanted to illustrate the
differences between the different parts of the utensil. Furthermore, there is plenty
of shading that must be created in to produce complexity in my sketch.
Nevertheless, I did make a few mistakes as I was drawing; but it was quickly
8. corrected through erasing and redrawing. I also added details on the utensil such
as, lining, shapes and shadows. I made use of the 8B pencil to shade the inner
part of the utensil to make it look three dimensional, and more realistic.
The sketch was completed in the time period of approximately four hours. The
reason it took so long was because there were a lot of mistakes and corrections
made throughout the entire process of sketching. When the drawing was
completed, it gave me a strong sense of accomplishment. I would say I will do it
again, it was really fun and interesting; plus it also kills time!
