5. Sketching is a process where one makes a rough drawing or an outline of an
object. It is done as a draft before the real drawing is produced. I am taking Foundation
in Natural and Built Environment so therefore sketching would be very useful for my
course. This course encourages us to use our creative thinking and produce work in a
way that expresses ourselves. We sketch our first ideas and edit until we get the final
product. Sketching enables me to free my mind and I am not afraid to make mistakes as
it just a sketch which can and will be edited as time goes by. My process essay would
be how to sketch a blender.
My chosen kitchen utensil to write about is the blender. There are many different
types of blenders so I will just be focusing on the personal blender. It is small with
stainless steel blades and has a capacity from 14 to 20 oz. This blender is quieter than
other blenders as it is used to make drinks such as milkshakes, smoothies and juices
with or without ice. Also, placing something soft between the blender and countertop will
lessen the noise. The drinks made by the blender can be drunk straight from the
blender jar. It is simple to use and has a speed control from 0 to 2. It is also easy to
carry around. It is used in everyday life for people with a busy lifestyle or trying to live a
healthier lifestyle. A drink can be whipped up in a couple of minutes and can be grabbed
to go with a no-spill travel lid integrated onto the top. I chose this object as I myself
depend on this utensil when I am in a rush to get to school, now college, for my
breakfast.
For my personal preference, I like to use the 2B pencil as it is not too light but not
too dark. It is the in between and perfect for sketching and it is also easy to erase off
any mistakes. To blend drawings and produce smooth shading, Q-tips and facial tissues
6. are an ideal tool to use. I use the vinyl eraser, also called as the plastic eraser, which
are the toughest erasers. They erase and clean completely without breaking easily.
However, if not use carefully, they can tear through the paper. The workspace I need
has to be clean and cleared. I like big spaces and prefer doing my work in front of a
window because of the natural sunlight. It makes me feel free and has a calming effect.
Music in the background is also good.
There are many different types of shading techniques such as hatching,
crosshatching and squirkling. Hatching is where one only uses one set of lines.
Crosshatching is where one uses two set of lines overlapping each other to make
crosses. Squirkling is when one does scribbling with circles. It is fun and mostly used for
shading frizzy hair or fabric. I used the hatching technique for my blender. If I wanted it
to be darker, I need to draw the lines closer to each other and if I wanted it lighter then I
need to draw them further apart. If there are mistakes, simply just take the eraser and
gently erase the mistake off to ensure there won’t be any tears or a large contrast.
I took around 2 hours for my sketch as I took a lot of time on the shading. I am
not an expert in shading but I am still trying to work on it. After completing my work, I felt
happy with it but I know there is always room for improvement. I need to work on my
shading and learn how to contour. I would definitely love to try it again to brush up on
my skill.
