4. In a broad view, drawing is an art whereby both simple and complicated
techniques are used to illustrate, define and produce an object into an image.
Sketching is the main and primary technique in drawing. The Oxford Advance
Learner’s Dictionary defines sketching as a simple picture that is drawn quickly and
does not have many details. Sketches may be simple and plain, however it captures
the main beauty and characteristics of an object which makes sketching so important
in drawing as it acts as the foundation for the final product. Sketches are
fundamental in designing and architecture. Since sketching can convey the main
idea of the project or object, it is easily understood by all parties, making it the best
way to present premature design and architectural concepts to other people.
Therefore, I believe that sketching is extremely important in my current course.
Moving on, my process essay is about how I chose and sketched my kitchen utensil
which are a pair of chopsticks.
I believe that I have chose the right kitchen utensil to demonstrate how
sketching is executed. I the chopsticks as my kitchen utensil to work on because in
my opinion, it is a very important tool in the Chinese culture. First of all, I drew it
based on a simple chopstick. It has a long cylindrical shape with the tip having a
narrower body compared to the end which has a broader body. On top of that, it also
has a glossy appearance and is maize in colour. The chopsticks feels solid, hard,
smooth and polished but at the same time it’s also a little flexible because it’s made
out of plastic. Furthermore, the mere contact of the chopsticks themselves creates a
unique ticking sound which are noticeable when heard. The chopsticks have an
odourless smell and taste before being used. For me, I often use chopsticks to eat
my food as it reminds me of my cultural background as a Chinese and my loving
5. family. I chose this unique utensil because it is now widely used everywhere around
the world regardless of nationality, race, or religion, which stresses its importance.
To achieve a beautiful sketch, we must have the right tools and materials. The
most important tool is the pencil. I used a 2H, 2B, and 6B pencil to achieve a better
contrast and different levels of shading. A Hard (H) pencil is lighter compared to a
Black (B) pencil, the number in front of the categories of pencils determines the
strength of the pencil. For example, 2B is lighter than 6B for B pencils, on the other
hand, 6H is lighter than 2H.After that, I used the 2B and 6B pencils to shade and
enhance my sketch. I often sharpen my pencils because it’s easier to control and
shade. Furthermore, the medium of the sketch I used was a sketching paper with
135gsm. The thickness and texture of the paper provided me with a good base to
start and produce my sketch. Apart from that, mistakes cannot be avoided in a
sketch, that’s why I had a rubber eraser of good quality as to not damage the paper I
was sketching on. Lastly, I had to clear my sketching space to get rid of all the
distractions and unnecessary items because I need to focus on the task at hand.
Starting off with the sketch, I drew small fine lines with a 2H pencil quickly to
sketch the outline of the chopsticks. To make sure I make minimal mistakes, I took
my time in reimagining the way and method of sketching the chopsticks. After
sketching the outline, I proceeded to sketch the various elements of the chopsticks
including the shadows with the 2B and 6B pencils. I used a two main shading
techniques including the smudge and crosshatch shading technique. Moreover, I
was careful to not let my hand smudge the sketch as this would change the
6. perception of the intended sketch. I used a source of light to create a good lighting in
the sketch. I used different tones in shading to get the desired amount of light on the
chopsticks. I also drew the sketch slowly and lightly so I could prevent and easily
rectify my mistakes using a rubber eraser.
In conclusion, it took me three hours to complete the sketch from scratch. It
took some time to finish the sketch because I had to slowly complete it to prevent
major mistakes. I felt happy and relieved because all my hard work was worth it. I
strongly recommend everyone to have a go at sketching. If I was given a chance to
do this again, I would definitely do it because it has taught me to be more meticulous
in my observation as well as trained me to be more patient.
