ASHOCK TO BJP’S
STATE LEADERSHIP!
Kartikey Dev Singh
Jaipur: In political par-
lance, they say that a
smart leader is one who
can gauge the tide even
before the current be-
comes turbulent, and
succesfully turns the
odds in his favour thus.
One look at the Munici-
pal body result would
be enough to tell that
the political stalwart of
Rajasthan, Chief Minis-
ter Ashok Gehlot not
only perfectly gauged
the ‘waters’ ahead of
the local body polls, but
also devised successful
strategy to counter
threat posed by the BJP.
It was Gehlot and his
trusted lieutenant, LSG
minister Shanti Dhari-
wal who devised bifur-
cating the three most
important local bodies
of Jaipur, Jodpur and
Kota. Furthermore, in-
creasing the number of
wards also ensured that
Congress candidates
would have to target
lower number of voters,
a point where Congress
always fares well.
And the results of the
six local bodies on Tues-
day proved once again
that Gehlot is a master-
mind when it comes to
winning elections. The
Congress party went on
the register thumping
victory in 3 out of the
six boards and such has
been its performance
that the party has been
able to form a board in
Jaipur first time since
1994, the year when the
formal formation of
Jaipur Municipal Cor-
poration was an-
nounced. The state cap-
ital was divided in
Jaipur Heritage and
Jaipur Greater wherein
Congress is in the driv-
ing seat in Jaipur Herit-
age and is all set to form
its board with inde-
pendents. However, in
Jaipur (Greater) BJP
has fared well. Turn to P6

their countdown has
started,” Gehlot said,
and further added, “We
have always said that
BJP resorts to horse-
trading to snatch power
and now it has been
proved how they in-
dulge in these activi-
ties. BJP has made a
fashion out of this.
They, against the tradi-

BJP LEADERSHIP’S ABJECT FAILURE
BJP’s comparatively poor performance at Jaipur Kota and Jodhpur also indicate
the failure of the pesent state leaership of BJP which mainly focuses on Gulab
chand Katriya, Satish Poonia, Rajendra Rathore and Chandrashekhar. In Vasund-
hara’s Raje’s absence, where she refrained from campaigning, is one important
pointer to again review and judge whether the BJP can stay afloat without Raje.
One important factor for BJP’s drubbing at Kota is that in absence of Om Birla,
after his taking over the charge of Lok Sabha speaker, there is no other versatile
and popular BJP leaer left behind in Kota to take on the Congress.

Jaipur: The Congress
on Tuesday managed to
sway the fortunes in its
favour in Jaipur munici-
palcorporationHeritage
where the party bagged
47 out of 100 seats in the
municipal corporation
elections. The Congress
garnered support of five
independent candidates
and claimed to have
crossed the magical
number of 51, required
to form the board. The
BJP could bag 42 while
11 independents won
from Heritage.
The four of the inde-
pendent councillors ar-
rived at the residence
of transport minister
Pratap Singh Khachari-
yawas from where they
were to be taken to
some hotel till the elec-
tion for mayor is held
on November 10.
“BJP can do anything
for power. In such a situ-
ation, we have decided
to keep all the council-

Khachariyawas.

Jodhpur: It is a win-win
situation for the ruling
Congress that won
Jodhpur municipal cor-
poration North and the
opposition BJP that
gained majority in
Jodhpur South.
The BJP was ruling
Jodhpur Municipal Cor-
poration but the govern-
ment bifurcated the mu-
nicipal corporation into
Jodhpur north and
JodhpurSouththistime.
The municipal elec-
tions in Jodhpur were
the issue of prestige for
both the parties as Jodh-
pur is the hometown of
both CM Ashok Gehlot,
Union minister Gajen-
dra Singh Shekhawat.
The CM, however, did
not visit Jodhpur even
once during elections
and also skipped voting.
His son Vaibhav Gehlo
looked after the whole
poll process that led to
the party’s victory in
one corporation. On the
other hand, Shekha-
wat’s efforts also turned
successful in one mu-
nicipal corporation.
Gehlot’s political
mastery was visible in
the bifurcation of mu-
nicipal corporation
and delimitation of
wards which paved the
way for the party’s vic-
tory in one municipal
corporation.

Kota: The results in
Kota south municipal
corporation were sur-
prising where neither
Congress nor BJP won
clear majority and in-
dependent councilors
will play a crucial role
in board formation.
Of the 80 wards in
Kota south municipal
corporation, ruling
Congress and opposi-
tion BJP got 36 wards
each. Rest 8 wards
were won by independ-
ent candidates who
have made the election
of mayor interesting.
Former deputy
mayor Sunita Vyas
lost election, BJP’s
Rammohan Mitra ali-
as Babla also faced de-
feat this time.
Other BJP candi-
dates Narendra Singh,
who is considered
close to Kota MP, Hem-
raj Hada, Mahip Solan-
ki and Kshetrapal also
lost elections.
BJP’s Vivek Ra-

corporations were sat-

would form its board in
four out of six corpora-
tions.
The results of the vot-
ing for the six munici-
pal corporations of
Jaipur, Jodhpur and
Kota were declared on
Tuesday. “The results
that have come to us to-
day are satisfactory.
The public has stamped
on the good governance
of the Congress in the
state.
They have stamped
on the development
work done in the last
two years,” Dotasra told
the media persons on
Tuesday.
He said that usually
Congress did not form
its board in the civic
bodies and the last time
also the BJP was in the
majority. But, this time
Congress is going to
make boards in four out
of six municipal corpo-
rations.
“We are forming a
board with a majority
in Jaipur Heritage be-
cause the 11 independ-
ents who have won here
are of our party’s ideol-
ogy, they have all come
to us,” he said. The par-
ty has won 47 out of 100
seats in JMC Heritage
and has claimed sup-
port of five independ-
ents.
He said that Congress
has won with a huge
margin In Jodhpur
North and Kota North.

Jaipur: The Bharatiya
Janta Party on Tuesday
welcomed the results of
the six municipal corpo-
rations saying that it
reflected the wrong poli-
cies of the state govern-
ment. State president
Satish Poonia said that
the results of municipal
corporations in Jaipur,
Jodhpur, and Kota had
revealed the lies of Con-
gress. “Hypocrisy and
misrule of Congress
has been exposed. The
public has given its
mandate against the
ruling party which is
riding on ego of power.
The results are start of
fall of the Congress and
this fall will complete
with the Panchayati Raj
elections,” Poonia said
here on Tuesday. Con-
gress increased corpo-
rations and tried to di-
vide cities on the basis
of castes, Mathur said.

Jaipur: The Congress
and the BJP herded its
candidates and some in-
dependents also as the
race for forming the
boards in six municipal
corporations started on
Tuesday with the an-
nouncement of munici-
pal results.
Both the parties are
making special efforts
to gain favours with the
independent candidates
in Jaipur municipal
corporation Heritage
and in Kota South. In
JMC Heritage, the Con-
gress won 47 out of 100
seats and is claiming
support of five inde-
pendent candidates.
MLAs started gather-
ing at the bungalow of
transport minister
Pratap Singh Khachari-
yawas. MLA Amin Kag-
zi reached Khachariya-
was’ residence with
three independent can-
didates. According to
party insiders, the inde-
pendent candidates
have been herded in ho-
tel Shakun in Jaipur.
Accepting the reports
of herding, Khachariya-
was and party Chief
whip Mahesh Joshi said
it was required as the
BJP could go to any ex-
tent in distabilising the
Congress prospects.
“BJP can go to any
extent to gain power as
such we have secured
independent candidates
who share Congress ide-
ology,” said Joshi who
asked the independents
to pledge support to
Congress by raising
their hands.
In Kota South, both
Congress and BJP won
36 seats each and eight
independent candidates
hold the key to forma-
tion of the board.
Meanwhile, BJP let
many of its winning
candidates from JMC
Greater to return to
homes as party gained
majority on the corpo-
ration by winning 88
seats. BJP had started

his year’s Book-

offers the most
diverse lineup
ever with four
female and two male writ-
ers, four of who are people
of colour. But while the di-
versity of 2020 shortlists for
the best original novel is to
be commended, the majori-
tyof thepublishersof Book-
er-winning novels are still
based in London.
This reflects that the con-
centration of power in the
UnitedKingdompublishing
is still in the English capi-
tal. As such, non-English
British writers published
outside London are peren-
nially disadvantaged by
Booker’s selection criteria.
And as it stands, of the 30
times the prize has been
awarded to UK-based au-
thors, it has only once gone
to a Scottish author: James
Kelman’s How Late it Was
How Late, in 1994. It went
once to a Welsh author –
Bernice Rubens for The
Elected Member in 1970 –
while Anna Burns became
the first winner from
Northern Ireland in 2018
for Milkman. Three non-
English, but UK-based win-
ners, all of which were pub-
lished by London presses.
The Booker is steeped in
Britain’s colonial history,
having originally been set
up as an award for British
and Commonwealth writ-
ers writing in the English
language and published in
the UK and Ireland.
The literary prize
opened up its entry criteria
in 2013 to allow submis-
sions from writers born
outside of Britain, its Com-
monwealth and its former
colonies. This is a move
that continues to rankle
some prominent British
authors with concerns US
writers are dominating the
line-up. All but one of the
writers on the 2020 short-
list, are from the US or hold
joint US citizenship.
Prior to this, the makeup
of Booker winners was
overwhelmingly male
(67%), privately-educated
(62%),andone-thirdof win-
nershadattendedOxfordor
Cambridge University. No
wonder, then, that Julian
Barnes, former judge and
winner of the prize, de-
scribed it as “posh bingo”.
As with any literary
prize, the Booker’s submis-
sion criteria has always
influenced the kind of nov-
els that are shortlisted. Its
submission guidelines,
which do not allow entries
from publishers who do
not publish at least two lit-
erary fiction titles a year,
have created an unbal-
anced system.
And since a rule change
in 2013, the prize is now
weighted even more to-
wards publishers with a
history of having books
longlisted for the prize –

four entries. This change
wassaidtobeintheinterest
of fairness and to better
“representthelevelsof pub-
lishing the different sized

the changes work in favour
of the bigger publishers.
The prize also often il-
lustrates a disconnect be-
tween the publishing in-
dustry and the reading
public. This gulf could be
behind the surging popu-

The govt’s idea of fixing the
financial sector - that they
ruined - is to charge people for
withdrawing or depositing their
own money. Once again the
people of India must suffer for the
BJP govt’s incompetence.
Sponsored by Shree Cement Limited
r Farooq Abdullah and his
other colleagues are busy
spreading certain myths and
lies in order to regain the lost
sympathies of the people. It
is being done in the hope that
repeated lies may convince
the people of their innocence
and help revive their sagging
political relevance in the
changed environment in
Kashmir. A perception is be-
ing created of them being
victimised. The seven valley
based political parties have
stitched an alliance called
Peoples’ Alliance for Gupkar
Declaration (referred to as
the Alliance herein after). If
these myths and lies are not
busted in time they may turn
into beliefs. Therefore, an ef-
fort is being made in subse-
quent paras to present the
truth to the people.
Myth#1. Farooq & Co
claim that the people of Mus-
lim majority J&K decided to
join secular India instead of
Muslim Pakistan. The reality
is that as per India Independ-
ence Act 1947, the authority
to decide the future of his
princely state was vested in
the ruler/head of the state
and the people of the friendly
state had no choice in the
matter. Accordingly, Maha-
raja Hari Singh Ji, the then
ruler of the state exercised
his option in favour of India
by signing the Instrument of
Accession on 26th October
1947, being celebrated as the
Accession Day across the
UTs of JK and Ladakh.
Myth#2. The abrogation of
Article 370 is unconstitution-
al and arbitrary. The reality

bers of the ruling party BJP

ready rejected an application

mentation of the J&K Reor-
ganisation Act 2019.
Myth#3. Articles 370 and
35A will be restored if Con-
gress returns to power. The
reality is that Congress has
maintained an ambivalent
stand on the issue through
conflicting statements by its
leader at the national and
Pradesh level. Despite open
challenge to Congress to an-
nounce that they would re-
verse the decision Congress
has failed to do so and not
made any commitment.
Myth#4. BJP is a commu-
nal party and promotes divi-
sive politics. Nothing can be
farther from the truth. These
leaders have always fought
elections on the plea of safe-
guarding the interests of
Muslims by terming BJP as
a Hindu party. They are re-
sponsible castigating the
Hindu minority as “belong-
ing to just 2.5 districts.”
Myth#5. There will be no
one to carry the Tiranga if
370 is abrogated. The nation-
al tricolour flies proudly atop
all buildings and offices in
Jammu & Kashmir. There
was overwhelming participa-
tion of the people during In-
dependence Day celebrations
this year despite the fear of
Covid. Flag hoisting, cultur-
al programmes, games and
sports activities were organ-
ised with gusto across the
Valley including remote vil-
lages. Very recently, hun-
dreds of Kashmiri youth
marched across the Gupkar
Road, where most of these
leaders reside, carrying Ti-
ranga and shouting anti-Pa-
kistan slogans on their way
to the nearby office of UN to
mark the Black Day, the day
Pakistan Army backed by
raiders attacked the princely
state for its forcible annexa-
tion. The inhuman atrocities
committed by the Pakis form
a gory chapter in the state’s
history for which Pakistan
can never be forgiven.
Lie#1. “The alliance is not
anti-national.” Without dig-
ging into their past but going
just by their recent utteranc-
es let the people decide for
themselves if they are anti-
national or not. The Presi-
dent of the alliance is on re-
cord to have said in an inter-
view with an on-line portal
that “Kashmiris don’t feel
that they are Indians” and
invited the Chinese. A few
days later he gave another
pro-China seditious state-
ment. He not only gave legiti-
macy to the Chinese incur-
sions in Ladakh but went
further to say that 370 will be
restored with Chinese help.
Lie#2. “The alliance is not
religion specific.” A mere
glance at the list of office
bearers of the alliance from
top to bottom will puncture
this lie by itself. Not once but
for the third time the alliance
has not included any non-
Muslim. There is no signato-
ry from Jammu region and
neither any office bearer has
been chosen from the region.
Undoubtedly, the alliance is
not only religion but region
specific as well.
Lie#3. “The alliance is
fighting for the restoration of
special status to Jammu and
Kashmir.” Jammu and Kash-
mir never had a special sta-
tus. Neither the Constitution
of India nor any official legal
document of the Government
of India uses the term “Spe-
cial Status” with reference to
J&K. Then where is the ques-
tionof itsrestoration?Article
370 was a temporary provi-
sion which gave special pow-
ers but no status. These spe-
cial powers were co-terminus
with Article 370. Farooq has
himself admitted that we are
fighting for “our rights.”
Lie#4. “Our aim is to en-
sure rights of the people of
Jammu,KashmirandLadakh
are restored.” The alliance as
brought out earlier does not
represent Jammu or Ladakh.
Ladakh is over joyed by be-
coming a UT, their long pend-
ing demand. They have just
voted for the Ladakh Autono-
mousHillDevelopmentCoun-
cil. They are least interested
in status quo. The local units
of NC and PDP have been dis-
banded moment Ladakh was
declared as a UT. As regards
Jammuisconcerned,thepub-
licsentimentsareoverwhelm-
ingly against Kashmiri he-
gemony. They have not forgot-
ten the discrimination they
suffered at the hands of these
leaders. They are in no mood
to give up their newly ac-
quired freedom. There are no
takers for status quo. Howev-
er, there is a growing demand
inJammuforaseparatestate-
hood. The public sentiments
are against any truck with
these leaders and they do not
want at any cost to be ruled by
them again.
Afewstarkrealitiesstareat
the Alliance which it is refus-
ing to recognise. One Nation,
One Constitution and One
Flag is an accepted norm in
J&K. Hence there is no space
left for sub-nationalism now.
They have to either amalgam-
ate with the rest of the nation
or join the separatist
foldThese days the Kashmiris
particularly the youth which
forms the majority are led by
a single “A” (ASPIRATIONS).
They are least interested in
their power politics. The Alli-
ance needs to accept these re-
alitiesandleadtheKashmiris
in realising their aspirations
rather than plunging them
back into the dark past.

tack at Congress and
RJD, PM Narendra
Modi on Tuesday said
that allies of “jungle
raj” in Bihar have a
problem with chanting
“Bharat Mata Ki Jai”
and “Jai Shri Ram”.
Addressing a rally

HC adjourns hearing on

hearing on a petition
filed by businessman
and diamantaire Mehul
Choksi, who is an ac-

“Bad Boy Billionaires”.
A division bench of
Chief Justice DN Patel

the matter on Nov 20.
The court was hear-
ing Choksi’s petition
against the order of a
single-judge bench dis-
missing his plea seek-
ing pre-screening of the
documentary.
In the last hearing
Choksi’s advocate Vijay
Aggarwal had asked if
Netflix is permitted to
violate an individual’s
fundamental rights. Ag-
garwal had also asked
whether Netflix’s claim
to remain unregulated
and being beyond the
jurisdiction of writ
courts in India is legal.
SenioradvocatesNeeraj
Kishan Kaul and Dayan

for Netflix, had argued
that the appellant is not
entitled to any relief, as
he is not a Citizen of In-
dia, as he has forsaken
his citizenship, and
therefore, not entitled
to the protection of any
fundamental right.

Jaipur: A young Asi-

He was sick for the

years ago and all
three have died.
This is 8th death
of a big cat in Na-

which has come as
a shock for the
wildlife lovers.
A medical board

EMERGING ‘STAR’ OF
GEHLOT CABINET
For the last couple of months,
WCD minister and one of
Gehlot’s lady troubleshooter,
Mamta Bhupesh is slowly
emerging as a new popular star
of Gehlot cabinet. Gehlot, who
always considers Mamta as his
daughter, has given her almost a
complete free hand in the running
of her WCD ministry, where she
has demonstrated an outstanding
performance. Like the former
finance minister Pradhuman
Singh, Mamta also maintains a
close personal rapport with her
bureaucracy. During a recent
MLAs ‘badabandi’ at Jaipur and
Jaisalmer, she was given the
responsibility of taking care of all
lady MLAs and in this role, she
was giving her daily ‘feedback’ to
CM Gehlot during that critical time.
According to sources, in the next
reshuffle, she might get the charge
of some other ministry. In fact,
she is the popular and smiling face
of Gehlot cabinet.

TENSED CONGRESS
AND ITS LEADERS
It appears that the local body
election has raised tensions in the
Congress party. While generally
the senior leaders stay calm when
the situation becomes contrasting,
however, this time around even the
seniors have been riled up. Only
a handful of days have passed
when former Jaipur Mayor Jyoti
Khandelwal openly rebelled against
much senior leader Shanti Dhariwal
wherein sparks also flew between
the two. In the second incident of
similar kind, highly placed sources
reveal that a minor verbal ‘spat’
occurred between Dhariwal and
Dotasra too on the selection of
candidates for local body election!
However what is more surprising
is the fact that it occurred before
CM Ashok Gehlot and it is being
said that even the high command
has been apprised of the same by
the rival camp which has sought a
‘secret report’ on the entire issue!

KKR BEAT SRH VIA SUPER OVER!
SOUNDING
DEATH
KNELL?
DEATHA
Nahargarh Biological Park seems to have become
a graveyard of Big Cats as 7 have died in past 13
months; Death of a lion on Sunday, shows that all
is not well here! A report by Nirmal Tiwari...
lion died due to health
complications at Na-
hargarh Biological
Park on Sunday. The
four-year-old Kailash
developed health issues after
having food on Saturday even-
ing, following which he was
given treatment said sources.
With this a debate over the
functioning of the Park has
started among wildlife lovers.
The Park has been in news for
death of lions and tigers in re-
cent times. The death of 7 big
cats in 13 months raised seri-
ous questions on the monitor-
ing of Park by officials, which
seems to be fast turning into a
graveyard of big cats!
Gross negligence on part of
Park’s administration is palpa-
ble with the fact that big cats,
including Asiatic lions, have
died one after another since
September 19, 2019.
Sources indicate untrained
veterinary doctors, adminis-
trative negligence and lack of
monitoring have cost dear to
the lives of seven big cats in a
period of 13 months. (See table).
These deaths had alarmed
the authorities but unfortu-
nately, the negligence was cov-
ered up. The Forest Depart-
ment did not learn from the
mistakes back then. After
deaths of big cats at regular
intervals, the forest depart-
ment took blood samples of all
tigers, lions and leopards. Bar-
ring the leopards, tiger and
lion kidneys were found to be
damaged. The creatinine level
of all was found to be 3.5 to
4. Despite this, the Park ad-
ministration remained
negligent and these big
cats were given medicines only
on the advice of one doctor.
Now, Asiatic Lion Kailash’s
death has shocked the depart-
ment. Parks’ Assistant Forest
Conservator Jagdish Gupta
said Kailash was given medi-
cine last night but he died in
the morning. A medical board
of 3 doctors declared the cause
of death as a cardiac arrest.
However, sources say that
Kailash was 4 years old and
had an infection in kidney, due
to which he had an increased
level of creatinine.
Leptospirosis is spread by
rat urine and despite deaths, in
Park no control of mongoose
and rats has been done yet.
Now there are 3 tigers and as
many lions left here but and
they too face risk of death!

Washington: The 2020
US Presidential elec-
tion is much different
than previous elections
owing to people being
nervous about the coun-
try’s future amid nearly
8 per cent unemploy-
ment and more than
231,000 COVID-19
deaths.
The division and
anxiety are evident in
conversations among
voters in long lines
outside early voting
places and across
browning autumn
lawns where warring
yard signs pit neigh-
bor against neighbor,
said The New York
Times.
According to the NYT
report, a fundamental
unease about the coun-
try hovers over most
other concerns voters
describe as they cast
ballots: The future of
America troubles them
more than whether they
may lose a job in this
recession, whether they
could become ill in this
pandemic, whether
they could personally
be harmed by violent
crime. The national
polling by the NYT
and Siena College has
stated that the voters
fear the US could lose
its democracy.
“That sentiment
means different things
to voters on the left and
the right. Republicans
describe fears of creep-
ing socialism from
within the Democratic
Party and deep changes
in American values
amid protests against
the police and histori-
cal figures. Democrats
fear threats to democ-
racy from within the
White House itself, as
they describe Trump
undermining the coun-
try’s institutions and
rule of law,” the NYT
stated. —ANI

n a new series,
our writers ex-
plore their best
worst film.
They’ll tell you
what the critics
got wrong – and
why it’s time to give
these movies another
chance.
While some may know
John Waters through
his family friendly Hair-
spray (1988) – adapted
into a stage musical in
2002 and back to the
screen in 2007 – many
know him as the Prince
of Puke, the King of Bad
Taste or the Pope of
Trash.
Perhaps his most no-
torious film is the ex-
ploitation comedy Pink
Flamingos (1972), the
first in his “Trash Tril-
ogy”, which also in-
cludes Female Trouble
(1974) and Desperate
Living (1977).
Pink Flamingos is em-
blematic of Waters’
camp aesthetic, juxta-
posing grotesque sub-
ject matter against pas-
tel colours, kitsch props
and bubblegum pop mu-
sic.
Waters’ muse Divine
is Babs Johnson, the
“filthiest person alive.”
She lives with her moth-
er Edie (Edith Massey),
who dresses as a baby,
sits in a crib and screams
for eggs; her ghoulish
lover Cotton (Mary Viv-
ian Pearce); and her son
Crackers (Danny Mills),
who, in a particularly
gruesome moment, has
sex with a woman while
a live chicken is crushed
to death between their
two bodies.
But Babs’ title of
“filthiest person alive”
is at stake, and she must
rival Raymond (David
Lochary) and Connie
Marble (Mink Stole),
who kidnap women, im-
prison and forcefully
impregnate them, and
sell their babies to les-
bian couples.
Variety’s first review
is now famous, calling it
“one of the most vile,
stupid and repulsive
films ever made.”
BANNED FOR
INDECENCY
It wasn’t just the critics
who were unimpressed.
When distributors tried
to bring the film to Aus-
tralia in 1976, it was
banned for “indecency”.
A cut version was given
an R rating and released
that year theatrically.
The film’s full version
was eventually granted
an X18+ rating, for por-
nographic, non-simulat-
ed sexual activity, re-
stricting sale and hire
of the film to the ACT
and some regions of the
NT.
In 1997, for a 25th an-
niversary cinematic re-
release, the uncut film
was again refused. The
classification board said
films could receive an R
rating when sexual ac-
tivity was “realistically
simulated” – but not
when it was “the real
thing”.
Films with unsimu-
lated sexual activity,
such as Catherine Breil-
lat’s Romance (1999)
and John Cameron
Mitchell’s Shortbus
(2006) have since been
awarded R18+ classifi-
cation, allowing the cat-
egory to include them.
But the full version of
Pink Flamingos main-
tains an X18+ rating.
Even the National Film
and Sound Archive’s
2017 screenings of
banned films showed a
cut version rated R18+.
STUPID? NO: IT WAS
GROUNDBREAKING
Despite this recep-
tion, Pink Flamingos is
now heralded as ground-
breaking. It shaped the
boundaries of bad taste
and gross out humour.
There are several
shocking scenes in the
film. One sees Divine
and Crackers break into
the Marbles’ home
where, after licking all
the furniture, Divine
fellates her son. Anoth-
er sees a shot of a man
flexing his prolapsed
anus so it looks like it’s
miming the words to
“Surfin’ Bird”.
But perhaps the most
notorious is where, in
the final scene, Divine
eats dog faeces to the
song “How Much is the
Doggy in the Window?”.
Just how much can
you stomach when
watching something dis-
gusting?
The characters in
Pink Flamingos chal-
lenge normative ideas
around sexuality, gen-
der and family. Con-
fronting perceptions of
“good taste”, Pink Fla-
mingos attacked an elit-
ist culture that excluded
many communities,
such as queer folk and
punks.

FACEOFTHEDAY
KRITIKA KHURANA, Blogger
LEO
JULY 24 - AUGUST 23
Your initiative to completing
all given tasks will be
noticed by those who
matters. Enhancement in
salary or previous arrears will boost
your finances. Following a diet fad will
help you remain in shape. Your
professional approach to the issues at
hand will help in expediting them.
LIBRA
SEPT 24 - OCTOBER 22
Wrong decisions may
become a bane and get you
on the back foot. Don’t
ignore sane advice. Trying
to earn big time may remain a dream,
if you don’t work towards achieving
it. Those feeling out of sorts for
some time are likely to make a quick
recovery, with some efforts.
ARIES
MAR 21 - APR 20
Taking recourse to dire
measures in a relationship
is not warranted at this
point in time rather give it
some more time. Things are bound
to turn favourable. Your analytical
abilities and professional bent of
mind are to get you noticed at work.
You remain judicious in spending.
SAGITTARIUS
NOV 23 - DEC 22
It may not be a good idea to
thrust something on
someone, when you know it
will be difficult for him or
her to discharge. Today, nearness to
your lover will prove most comforting.
Some relief is foreseen for those under
debt. Chance of a new job may come
your way.
GEMINI
MAY 21 - JUNE 21
Making things work that
have been given up by
others can get you noticed,
so start thinking in this
direction. You will manage your
finances well. Don’t indulge in
rumour mongering, as you simply
gain nothing. You can be given
thumbs up for going ahead.
AQUARIUS
JAN 21 - FEB 19
You do well by not
antagonising someone who
is all for you. Good
opportunities are likely to
materialise on the academic front.
Giving up health products and
switching to a normal balanced diet will
be right. Those thinking of buying
property will need to be discerning.
TAURUS
APR 21 - MAY 20
Find time for someone who
is insistent on meeting
you. Compensation due to
you may get delayed
because of covid situation . You
receive a lot of encouragement from
your well-wishers in your present
occupation. Be careful of your rivals,
and don’t instigate them.
CAPRICORN
DEC 23 - JAN 20
Today despite networking,
something desired on the
academic front may remain
out of reach. You may not
get the benefit of doubt in a
workplace slip-up. A peaceful home
environment may remain elusive.
Tensions regarding money cannot be
ruled out at home but this won’t last.
VIRGO
AUG 24 - SEP 23
You may surprise
everyone by asserting a bit
more than usual to make
your point. This will help in
restoring your self-confidence. You
will be most efficient today on the
work front. There seems no problem
on the monetary front. Scoring well
on the academic front is indicated.
CANCER
JUNE 22 - JULY 23
Money will not be a
constraint in achieving
what you have set out for.
A bad property deal may
put you in a bind, so read the fine
print before proceeding ahead.
Changes made by you at workplace
may not be appreciated by all.
Remain guarded on academic front.
PISCES
FEB20 - MARCH 20
You are likely to have a
time of your life, exploring
new locales. Getting
involved in whatever you
are doing will get you into the picture
quickly. Delving into things that don’t
concern you will be appreciated by
people. A show or exhibition is likely
to get you some good business.
SCORPIO
OCT 23 - NOVEMBER 22
You will need to go out of
your way to woo the
golden hen. On the
academic front ,you are
likely to bounce back with full gusto.
An important responsibilty at work
will help in proving your mettle and
is likely to do your career good. Save
money for the rainy day.

Johnny Depp has lost the libel

The Sun on Monday, Novem-
ber 2. The actor had sued the inter-
national publication after the tab-
loid described him as a “wife beat-
er.” A judge of the London High
Court dismissed the claim by the
actor for compensation at the end of
the case. The judge also ruled that
the allegations against the Hollywood
actor were “substantially true”. It is
reported that the ruling could severe-
ly impact Depp’s reputation and ca-
reer.
Judge Andrew Nicol accepted Am-
ber Heard’s claims of the actor vio-
lently assaulting her on various occa-

the assault allegations of Heard

arva Chauth is a fes-
tival where Hindu
women especially
from North India,
observe a whole day
fast from sunrise till
sunset for the well-
being and longevity of their
husband’s life. For the cere-
mony of breaking fast and
pooja, women dress up in eth-
nic attire and one of the most
common choices for it is a
red saree. While traditions
still rule the day with an ar-
ray of rituals and a peek at
the much-awaited moon, the
wardrobe factor has drasti-
cally modified the look and
feel of the occasion. It is a
day when you get to show-
case your dressy-glam Indian
version, with all sorts of ex-
perimenting fabulousness
beyond the traditional red
saree ensemble. And this
year is no exception; howev-
er, with the pandemic on our
heads, there could be a few
changes in the overall look.
City First talked to a few peo-
ple from Rajasthan and Guja-
rat, to know their Karwa
Chauth look this year.
Karwa Chauth is all
about revelling in a
good mood and noth-
ing makes women feel better
than dressing well while
doing something special
for their husbands. It is
always a great idea
to slip into a
lehenga for
karwa
Chauth. I purchased a red
lehenga with golden
work on it as red is a
symbol of love and
golden is a symbol
of prosperity. I
am wearing a red
mask along that
completes my look
which stays tradi-
tional yet a stylish
statement. Be
it clothes,
jewellery or
make-up,
everything
adds to the
feel-good
factor on
this day.

  • 1. ASHOCK TO BJP’S STATE LEADERSHIP! Kartikey Dev Singh Jaipur: In political par- lance, they say that a smart leader is one who can gauge the tide even before the current be- comes turbulent, and succesfully turns the odds in his favour thus. One look at the Munici- pal body result would be enough to tell that the political stalwart of Rajasthan, Chief Minis- ter Ashok Gehlot not only perfectly gauged the ‘waters’ ahead of the local body polls, but also devised successful strategy to counter threat posed by the BJP. It was Gehlot and his trusted lieutenant, LSG minister Shanti Dhari- wal who devised bifur- cating the three most important local bodies of Jaipur, Jodpur and Kota. Furthermore, in- creasing the number of wards also ensured that Congress candidates would have to target lower number of voters, a point where Congress always fares well. And the results of the six local bodies on Tues- day proved once again that Gehlot is a master- mind when it comes to winning elections. The Congress party went on the register thumping victory in 3 out of the six boards and such has been its performance that the party has been able to form a board in Jaipur first time since 1994, the year when the formal formation of Jaipur Municipal Cor- poration was an- nounced. The state cap- ital was divided in Jaipur Heritage and Jaipur Greater wherein Congress is in the driv- ing seat in Jaipur Herit- age and is all set to form its board with inde- pendents. However, in Jaipur (Greater) BJP has fared well. Turn to P6 54.44 per cent cast their vote Bihar: Over 53 per cent of the total 2.85 crore electorsin94constituen- cies of Bihar exercised their franchise till 5 pm in the second phase of voting on Tuesday, ac- cordingtoElectionCom- mission data. The esti- mated overall turnout at 6 PM is 53.51 per cent (provisional), the poll panel data said. Promi- nent personalities in- cluding Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, his depu- ty Sushil Kumar Modi, TejashwiYadav, andLJP president Chirag Pas- wan cast their votes in their respective polling booths in the morning. Polling began at 7 am, but the time for its con- clusion has been extend- ed by one hour till 6 pm to facilitate COVID-19 patients and those with symptomsof thedisease to exercise their fran- chise during the final hour. The process, how- ever, concluded early in Maoist-hit areas. Turn to P6 ‘BJP unmasked, people will teach them lesson’ Naresh Sharma Jaipur: Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot opened a front against the Bhar- tiya Janta Party (BJP) on Tuesday and said that the party has been unmasked. Sharing a sting video of former Gujarat Congress MLA, whorecentlyjoinedBJP, on his social media han- dles,Gehlotsaidthatthe people will teach BJP a lesson to keep the de- mocracy alive. “The tru face of the BJP has been unrav- elled and to keep the democracy alive, people will teach it a lesson. their countdown has started,” Gehlot said, and further added, “We have always said that BJP resorts to horse- trading to snatch power and now it has been proved how they in- dulge in these activi- ties. BJP has made a fashion out of this. They, against the tradi- tions of Democracy, have entered in horse trading in Goa, Ma- nipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Karntaka and Madhya Pradesh and tried a lot to do so in Ra- jasthan too but could- not do so.” Gehlot’s tweets came after a video of a for- mer Congress MLA went viral where he is allegedly saying that he hasnt resigned for noth- ing but since BJP of- ferred him a deal.CM Ashok Gehlot GEHLOT OPENS FRONT ON SAFFRON PARTY HIGH POLLING IN BYPOLLS Tourists visit the Atal Tunnel after fresh snowfall in Lahaul-Spiti. —PHOTO BY PTI MASTERMIND GEHLOT’S STRATEGY ENSURES CONG’S WIN DELVING MAJOR BLOW TO OPPOSITION Celebrations galore as Congress party registers thumping victory. —PHOTO BY SUMAN SARKAR Punjab CM to lead ‘dharna’ at Rajghat BJP MLA seeks police action against BachchanNew Delhi: Punjab Chief Minister Ama- rinderSinghonTuesday announced that he will lead a relay ‘dharna’ of Congress MLAs at the Rajghat on Wednesday morningtohighlightthe state’s “power crisis and critical essential sup- plies”situationamidthe Centre’s alleged ada- mant refusal to allow movement of goods trains due to farmers’ agitation. The Chief Minister said that Pun- jab had run out of coal, Turn to P6 Mumbai: A BJP MLA in Maharashtra on No- vember 3 approached the police seeking ac- tion against actor Am- itabh Bachchan and makers of TV show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepa- ti 12’ for allegedly hurt- ing Hindu sentiments. Abhimanyu Pawar, BJP legislator from Ausa in Latur district, in a complaint to Latur SP Nikhil Pingle said action should be taken against Mr. Bachchan Turn to P6 CBI, ED to grill Chidu, Karti for another month Expedite decision on Rajiv killer’s plea: SC to TN Guv New Delhi: A Delhi court on Tuesday (3 No- vember) granted time till 2 December to the CBI and ED to obtain report on Letters Roga- tory form the UK and Singapore in connec- tion to their ongoing probe in the Aircel- Maxis case against for- mer Union Minister P Chidambaram and his son Karti. Special Judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar allowed the request for more time after Additional Solicitor General San- jay Jain, appearing for the Central Bureau of Investigation and En- forement Directorate, informed that the LRs have been sent to the countries but no reply has yet been received. The matter, which is at the stage of taking cog- nizance, is adjourned for 2 December. Turn to P6 New Delhi: The Su- preme Court on Tues- day expressed unhappi- ness over the Tamil Nadu Governor for not taking a decision for over two years on the remission plea of AG Perarivalan, aconvictin the Rajiv Gandhi assas- sination case. A bench headed by Jus- tice L Nageswara Rao asked the Tamil Nadu government to request the State Governor to expedite his decision on theState’srecommenda- tions for the remission of sentence of the con- vict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. “We don’t want to ex- ercise our jurisdiction, but we are not happy with how this recom- mendation Turn to P6 ‘MODI CARES FOR MOTHERS, DAUGHTERS’ Araria: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing an election rally in Forbesganj here on Tuesday, said that he wins elections because he cares about mother and daughters of the coun- try. “People question why Prime Minister Modi wins elections. He wins because he cares about mothers and daughters of the country. Turn to P6 Bhopal/Lucknow/Ahmedabad: Moderate to high polling was recorded on Tuesday in by-elections to 54 assembly constituencies in 10 states despite the shadow of COVID-19 pandemic, with nearly 68 percent turnout in 28 seats in Madhya Pradesh where the results will decide the fate of the seven-month- old BJP government. Stray incidents of clashes between Congress and BJP workers were reported in MP and one person was injured in firing in Morena district, according to officials in the state. Turn to P6 BJP LEADERSHIP’S ABJECT FAILURE BJP’s comparatively poor performance at Jaipur Kota and Jodhpur also indicate the failure of the pesent state leaership of BJP which mainly focuses on Gulab chand Katriya, Satish Poonia, Rajendra Rathore and Chandrashekhar. In Vasund- hara’s Raje’s absence, where she refrained from campaigning, is one important pointer to again review and judge whether the BJP can stay afloat without Raje. One important factor for BJP’s drubbing at Kota is that in absence of Om Birla, after his taking over the charge of Lok Sabha speaker, there is no other versatile and popular BJP leaer left behind in Kota to take on the Congress. BIHAR 2ND PHASE POLLING ML LATHAR APPOINTED DGP Jaipur: Late on Tuesday night, the state govern- ment issued orders ap- pointing Director General (Crime) ML La- thar as the next DGP of Rajasthan Police. The top cop has been made DGP for a term of two years. Moreover, he has also been promoted to apex scale as well. Notably, Lathar had been discharging his duties as acting DGP as well since former DGP Dr Bhupen- dra Yadav took VRS. Bharat dixit Jaipur: The Congress on Tuesday managed to sway the fortunes in its favour in Jaipur munici- palcorporationHeritage where the party bagged 47 out of 100 seats in the municipal corporation elections. The Congress garnered support of five independent candidates and claimed to have crossed the magical number of 51, required to form the board. The BJP could bag 42 while 11 independents won from Heritage. The four of the inde- pendent councillors ar- rived at the residence of transport minister Pratap Singh Khachari- yawas from where they were to be taken to some hotel till the elec- tion for mayor is held on November 10. “BJP can do anything for power. In such a situ- ation, we have decided to keep all the council- lors together,” said Khachariyawas. Khachariyawas said thathewouldpersonally hold public courts in all the wards of the Jaipur municipal corporations Greater and Heritage to resolve the problems on the spot. In the counting heldonTuesday, theBJP gained a clear majority in JMC Greater by bag- ging 88 seats while Con- gressgotonly49while13 independentswerevoted to power. The BJP has, however, not lost hope in JMC Heritage and the party leaders are trying to approach the inde- pendent candidates to gain majority. There was ruckus in the counting hall when a few candidates object- ed to starting of count- ing in their absence as they reached late. They demanded recounting which the officials de- nied leading to ruckus and intervention of the security personnel. Shivprakas Purohit Jodhpur: It is a win-win situation for the ruling Congress that won Jodhpur municipal cor- poration North and the opposition BJP that gained majority in Jodhpur South. The BJP was ruling Jodhpur Municipal Cor- poration but the govern- ment bifurcated the mu- nicipal corporation into Jodhpur north and JodhpurSouththistime. The municipal elec- tions in Jodhpur were the issue of prestige for both the parties as Jodh- pur is the hometown of both CM Ashok Gehlot, Union minister Gajen- dra Singh Shekhawat. The CM, however, did not visit Jodhpur even once during elections and also skipped voting. His son Vaibhav Gehlo looked after the whole poll process that led to the party’s victory in one corporation. On the other hand, Shekha- wat’s efforts also turned successful in one mu- nicipal corporation. Gehlot’s political mastery was visible in the bifurcation of mu- nicipal corporation and delimitation of wards which paved the way for the party’s vic- tory in one municipal corporation. QUITE HAPPY! Bhawar S Charan Kota: The results in Kota south municipal corporation were sur- prising where neither Congress nor BJP won clear majority and in- dependent councilors will play a crucial role in board formation. Of the 80 wards in Kota south municipal corporation, ruling Congress and opposi- tion BJP got 36 wards each. Rest 8 wards were won by independ- ent candidates who have made the election of mayor interesting. Former deputy mayor Sunita Vyas lost election, BJP’s Rammohan Mitra ali- as Babla also faced de- feat this time. Other BJP candi- dates Narendra Singh, who is considered close to Kota MP, Hem- raj Hada, Mahip Solan- ki and Kshetrapal also lost elections. BJP’s Vivek Ra- jwanshi and Gopal Manda have won elec- tions. Prahlad Gunjal, Bhawani Singh Ra- jawat said that candi- date selection and ticket distribution was done in a wrong manner and former CM Raje was ignored in elections has given negative results. Kota: Independents hold key in South,Cong leads North HECTIC RUN FOR MAYORAL POSTS DHARIWAL, KATARIA TO VISIT KOTA TODAY IN VIEW OF NEW MAYOR Efforts of UDH minister Shanti Dhariwal were visible in Kota north municipal corporation where the party’s candidates won in 47 out of 70 wards. Dhariwal is proposed to visit Kota along with the district in charge agriculture minister Lalchand Kataria today. The tour is sig- nificant in view of elections for mayor. Yogendra Khinchi, Vivek Rajvasnhi and Gopal Manda are the top contender for the post of Mayor. HIP HIP HURRAY!! JEET GAYE HUM ! The results of the vot- ing for the six munici- pal corporations of Jaipur, Jodhpur and Kota were declared on Tuesday. “The results that have come to us to- day are satisfactory. The public has stamped on the good governance of the Congress in the state. They have stamped on the development work done in the last two years,” Dotasra told the media persons on Tuesday. He said that usually Congress did not form its board in the civic bodies and the last time also the BJP was in the majority. But, this time Congress is going to make boards in four out of six municipal corpo- rations. “We are forming a board with a majority in Jaipur Heritage be- cause the 11 independ- ents who have won here are of our party’s ideol- ogy, they have all come to us,” he said. The par- ty has won 47 out of 100 seats in JMC Heritage and has claimed sup- port of five independ- ents. He said that Congress has won with a huge margin In Jodhpur North and Kota North. Aishwary Pradhan Jaipur: The Bharatiya Janta Party on Tuesday welcomed the results of the six municipal corpo- rations saying that it reflected the wrong poli- cies of the state govern- ment. State president Satish Poonia said that the results of municipal corporations in Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Kota had revealed the lies of Con- gress. “Hypocrisy and misrule of Congress has been exposed. The public has given its mandate against the ruling party which is riding on ego of power. In JMC Heritage, the Con- gress won 47 out of 100 seats and is claiming support of five inde- pendent candidates. MLAs started gather- ing at the bungalow of transport minister Pratap Singh Khachari- yawas. MLA Amin Kag- zi reached Khachariya- was’ residence with three independent can- didates. According to party insiders, the inde- pendent candidates have been herded in ho- tel Shakun in Jaipur. Accepting the reports of herding, Khachariya- was and party Chief whip Mahesh Joshi said it was required as the BJP could go to any ex- tent in distabilising the Congress prospects. “BJP can go to any extent to gain power as such we have secured independent candidates who share Congress ide- ology,” said Joshi who asked the independents to pledge support to Congress by raising their hands. In Kota South, both Congress and BJP won 36 seats each and eight independent candidates hold the key to forma- tion of the board. Meanwhile, BJP let many of its winning candidates from JMC Greater to return to homes as party gained majority on the corpo- ration by winning 88 seats. BJP had started shifting its candidates. Editor: Anita Hada Sangwan responsible for selection of news under the PRB Act his year’s Book- erprizeshortlist offers the most diverse lineup ever with four female and two male writ- ers, four of who are people of colour. But while the di- versity of 2020 shortlists for the best original novel is to be commended, the majori- tyof thepublishersof Book- er-winning novels are still based in London. This reflects that the con- centration of power in the UnitedKingdompublishing is still in the English capi- tal. As such, non-English British writers published outside London are peren- nially disadvantaged by Booker’s selection criteria. And as it stands, of the 30 times the prize has been awarded to UK-based au- thors, it has only once gone to a Scottish author: James Kelman’s How Late it Was How Late, in 1994. It went once to a Welsh author – Bernice Rubens for The Elected Member in 1970 – while Anna Burns became the first winner from Northern Ireland in 2018 for Milkman. Three non- English, but UK-based win- ners, all of which were pub- lished by London presses. The Booker is steeped in Britain’s colonial history, having originally been set up as an award for British and Commonwealth writ- ers writing in the English language and published in the UK and Ireland. The literary prize opened up its entry criteria in 2013 to allow submis- sions from writers born outside of Britain, its Com- monwealth and its former colonies. This is a move that continues to rankle some prominent British authors with concerns US writers are dominating the line-up. All but one of the writers on the 2020 short- list, are from the US or hold joint US citizenship. Prior to this, the makeup of Booker winners was overwhelmingly male (67%), privately-educated (62%),andone-thirdof win- nershadattendedOxfordor Cambridge University. No wonder, then, that Julian Barnes, former judge and winner of the prize, de- scribed it as “posh bingo”. As with any literary prize, the Booker’s submis- sion criteria has always influenced the kind of nov- els that are shortlisted. Its submission guidelines, which do not allow entries from publishers who do not publish at least two lit- erary fiction titles a year, have created an unbal- anced system. And since a rule change in 2013, the prize is now weighted even more to- wards publishers with a history of having books longlisted for the prize – whoareabletosubmitupto four entries. This change wassaidtobeintheinterest of fairness and to better “representthelevelsof pub- lishing the different sized houses do”. But many feel the changes work in favour of the bigger publishers. The prize also often il- lustrates a disconnect be- tween the publishing in- dustry and the reading public. This gulf could be behind the surging popu- larity of the Guardian’s Not the Booker prize, a reader-nominated, deliber- ately tongue-in-cheek, re- joinder to the Booker’s per- ceived pomposity. K C Venugopal @kcvenugopalmp The govt’s idea of fixing the financial sector - that they ruined - is to charge people for withdrawing or depositing their own money. Once again the people of India must suffer for the BJP govt’s incompetence. Sponsored by Shree Cement Limited r Farooq Abdullah and his other colleagues are busy spreading certain myths and lies in order to regain the lost sympathies of the people. It is being done in the hope that repeated lies may convince the people of their innocence and help revive their sagging political relevance in the changed environment in Kashmir. A perception is be- ing created of them being victimised. The seven valley based political parties have stitched an alliance called Peoples’ Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (referred to as the Alliance herein after). If these myths and lies are not busted in time they may turn into beliefs. Therefore, an ef- fort is being made in subse- quent paras to present the truth to the people. Myth#1. Farooq & Co claim that the people of Mus- lim majority J&K decided to join secular India instead of Muslim Pakistan. The reality is that as per India Independ- ence Act 1947, the authority to decide the future of his princely state was vested in the ruler/head of the state and the people of the friendly state had no choice in the matter. Accordingly, Maha- raja Hari Singh Ji, the then ruler of the state exercised his option in favour of India by signing the Instrument of Accession on 26th October 1947, being celebrated as the Accession Day across the UTs of JK and Ladakh. Myth#2. The abrogation of Article 370 is unconstitution- al and arbitrary. The reality is that the said article was abrogated by a 2/3rd majori- ty in both houses of the Par- liament which represents 135 crore Indians. 100% mem- bers who supported the Bill were not exclusively mem- bers of the ruling party BJP but belonged to other parties as well since BJP had only 300 members but 370 votes were needed for the Bill to be passed.AConstitutionBench of the Supreme Court has al- ready rejected an application to intervene in the imple- mentation of the J&K Reor- ganisation Act 2019. Myth#3. Articles 370 and 35A will be restored if Con- gress returns to power. The reality is that Congress has maintained an ambivalent stand on the issue through conflicting statements by its leader at the national and Pradesh level. Despite open challenge to Congress to an- nounce that they would re- verse the decision Congress has failed to do so and not made any commitment. Myth#4. BJP is a commu- nal party and promotes divi- sive politics. Nothing can be farther from the truth. These leaders have always fought elections on the plea of safe- guarding the interests of Muslims by terming BJP as a Hindu party. They are re- sponsible castigating the Hindu minority as “belong- ing to just 2.5 districts.” Myth#5. There will be no one to carry the Tiranga if 370 is abrogated. The nation- al tricolour flies proudly atop all buildings and offices in Jammu & Kashmir. There was overwhelming participa- tion of the people during In- dependence Day celebrations this year despite the fear of Covid. Flag hoisting, cultur- al programmes, games and sports activities were organ- ised with gusto across the Valley including remote vil- lages. Very recently, hun- dreds of Kashmiri youth marched across the Gupkar Road, where most of these leaders reside, carrying Ti- ranga and shouting anti-Pa- kistan slogans on their way to the nearby office of UN to mark the Black Day, the day Pakistan Army backed by raiders attacked the princely state for its forcible annexa- tion. The inhuman atrocities committed by the Pakis form a gory chapter in the state’s history for which Pakistan can never be forgiven. Lie#1. “The alliance is not anti-national.” Without dig- ging into their past but going just by their recent utteranc- es let the people decide for themselves if they are anti- national or not. The Presi- dent of the alliance is on re- cord to have said in an inter- view with an on-line portal that “Kashmiris don’t feel that they are Indians” and invited the Chinese. A few days later he gave another pro-China seditious state- ment. He not only gave legiti- macy to the Chinese incur- sions in Ladakh but went further to say that 370 will be restored with Chinese help. Lie#2. “The alliance is not religion specific.” A mere glance at the list of office bearers of the alliance from top to bottom will puncture this lie by itself. Not once but for the third time the alliance has not included any non- Muslim. There is no signato- ry from Jammu region and neither any office bearer has been chosen from the region. Undoubtedly, the alliance is not only religion but region specific as well. Lie#3. “The alliance is fighting for the restoration of special status to Jammu and Kashmir.” Jammu and Kash- mir never had a special sta- tus. Neither the Constitution of India nor any official legal document of the Government of India uses the term “Spe- cial Status” with reference to J&K. Then where is the ques- tionof itsrestoration?Article 370 was a temporary provi- sion which gave special pow- ers but no status. These spe- cial powers were co-terminus with Article 370. Farooq has himself admitted that we are fighting for “our rights.” Lie#4. “Our aim is to en- sure rights of the people of Jammu,KashmirandLadakh are restored.” The alliance as brought out earlier does not represent Jammu or Ladakh. Ladakh is over joyed by be- coming a UT, their long pend- ing demand. They have just voted for the Ladakh Autono- mousHillDevelopmentCoun- cil. They are least interested in status quo. The local units of NC and PDP have been dis- banded moment Ladakh was declared as a UT. As regards Jammuisconcerned,thepub- licsentimentsareoverwhelm- ingly against Kashmiri he- gemony. They have not forgot- ten the discrimination they suffered at the hands of these leaders. They are in no mood to give up their newly ac- quired freedom. There are no takers for status quo. Howev- er, there is a growing demand inJammuforaseparatestate- hood. The public sentiments are against any truck with these leaders and they do not want at any cost to be ruled by them again. Afewstarkrealitiesstareat the Alliance which it is refus- ing to recognise. One Nation, One Constitution and One Flag is an accepted norm in J&K. Hence there is no space left for sub-nationalism now. They have to either amalgam- ate with the rest of the nation or join the separatist foldThese days the Kashmiris particularly the youth which forms the majority are led by a single “A” (ASPIRATIONS). They are least interested in their power politics. The Alli- ance needs to accept these re- alitiesandleadtheKashmiris in realising their aspirations rather than plunging them back into the dark past. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL THE MYTHS AND LIES BEING SPREAD BY GUPKARIS D The abrogation of Article 370 is unconstitutional and arbitrary. The reality is that the said article was abrogated by a 2/3rd majority in both houses of the Parliament which represents 135 crore Indians. 100% members who supported the Bill were not exclusively members of the ruling party BJP but belonged to other parties as well since BJP had only 300 members but 370 votes were needed for the Bill to be passed. A Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court has already rejected an application to intervene in the implementation of the J&K Reorganisation Act 2019 ARTICLES 370 AND 35A WILL BE RESTORED IF CONGRESS RETURNS TO POWER. THE REALITY IS THAT CONGRESS HAS MAINTAINED AN AMBIVALENT STAND ON THE ISSUE THROUGH CONFLICTING STATEMENTS BY ITS LEADER AT THE NATIONAL AND PRADESH LEVEL. DESPITE OPEN CHALLENGE TO CONGRESS TO ANNOUNCE THAT THEY WOULD REVERSE THE DECISION CONGRESS HAS FAILED TO DO SO AND NOT MADE ANY COMMITMENT BRIG VETERAN ANIL GUPTA The author is a Jammu based veteran, political commentator, columnist, security and strategic analyst

Addressing a rally here, he said that Bihar has left behind the dark- ness of insecurity and anarchy and added that poor were denied the right to vote during ‘jungle raj’. “Those who ran ‘jungle raj’ in Bihar and their allies want that you don’t raise ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ slo- gans. Think about it. There are people who get feverish just by say- ing ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’. Allies of jungle raj want slogans of ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ should not be raised,” the PM said and later ended his speech with the ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ slogan. “Allies of jungle raj in Bihar have problem with Bharat Mata. He was sick for the last few days. Tejas was born to Tejika and Siddharth near- ly three and a half years ago and all three have died. This is 8th death of a big cat in Na- hargarh Biological Park in 13 months, which has come as a shock for the wildlife lovers. A medical board conducted a post- mortem and the car- cass was disposed off on Monday. There was some improvement in Tejas’s health for the last two days and his health was also being m o n i - tored, but on the night of Novem- ber 2, his condition sud- denly deteriorated and he died. The medical board took samples, which have been sent to IVRI Bareilly for testing. Earlier, tigress Rambha’s cub, Rid- dhi died on Septem- ber 21, 2019. EMERGING ‘STAR’ OF GEHLOT CABINET For the last couple of months, WCD minister and one of Gehlot’s lady troubleshooter, Mamta Bhupesh is slowly emerging as a new popular star of Gehlot cabinet. Gehlot, who always considers Mamta as his daughter, has given her almost a complete free hand in the running of her WCD ministry, where she has demonstrated an outstanding performance. Like the former finance minister Pradhuman Singh, Mamta also maintains a close personal rapport with her bureaucracy. During a recent MLAs ‘badabandi’ at Jaipur and Jaisalmer, she was given the responsibility of taking care of all lady MLAs and in this role, she was giving her daily ‘feedback’ to CM Gehlot during that critical time. According to sources, in the next reshuffle, she might get the charge of some other ministry. In fact, she is the popular and smiling face of Gehlot cabinet. —Aishwary Pradhan TENSED CONGRESS AND ITS LEADERS It appears that the local body election has raised tensions in the Congress party. While generally the senior leaders stay calm when the situation becomes contrasting, however, this time around even the seniors have been riled up. Only a handful of days have passed when former Jaipur Mayor Jyoti Khandelwal openly rebelled against much senior leader Shanti Dhariwal wherein sparks also flew between the two. In the second incident of similar kind, highly placed sources reveal that a minor verbal ‘spat’ occurred between Dhariwal and Dotasra too on the selection of candidates for local body election! However what is more surprising is the fact that it occurred before CM Ashok Gehlot and it is being said that even the high command has been apprised of the same by the rival camp which has sought a ‘secret report’ on the entire issue! —First India Bureau NEWSJAIPUR | MONDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2020 07 www.firstindia.co.in I www.firstindia.co.in/epaper/ I twitter.com/thefirstindia I facebook.com/thefirstindia I instagram.com/thefirstindia Eoin Morgan captain of Kolkata Knight Riders and David Warner captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad shakes hand after the IPL match at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, in Abu Dhabi on Sunday. —PHOTO BY ANI KKR BEAT SRH VIA SUPER OVER! SOUNDING DEATH KNELL? DEATHA Nahargarh Biological Park seems to have become a graveyard of Big Cats as 7 have died in past 13 months; Death of a lion on Sunday, shows that all is not well here! A report by Nirmal Tiwari... lion died due to health complications at Na- hargarh Biological Park on Sunday. The four-year-old Kailash developed health issues after having food on Saturday even- ing, following which he was given treatment said sources. With this a debate over the functioning of the Park has started among wildlife lovers. The Park has been in news for death of lions and tigers in re- cent times. The death of 7 big cats in 13 months raised seri- ous questions on the monitor- ing of Park by officials, which seems to be fast turning into a graveyard of big cats! Gross negligence on part of Park’s administration is palpa- ble with the fact that big cats, including Asiatic lions, have died one after another since September 19, 2019. Sources indicate untrained veterinary doctors, adminis- trative negligence and lack of monitoring have cost dear to the lives of seven big cats in a period of 13 months. (See table). These deaths had alarmed the authorities but unfortu- nately, the negligence was cov- ered up. The Forest Depart- ment did not learn from the mistakes back then. After deaths of big cats at regular intervals, the forest depart- ment took blood samples of all tigers, lions and leopards. Bar- ring the leopards, tiger and lion kidneys were found to be damaged. The creatinine level of all was found to be 3.5 to 4. Despite this, the Park ad- ministration remained negligent and these big cats were given medicines only on the advice of one doctor. Now, Asiatic Lion Kailash’s death has shocked the depart- ment. Parks’ Assistant Forest Conservator Jagdish Gupta said Kailash was given medi- cine last night but he died in the morning. A medical board of 3 doctors declared the cause of death as a cardiac arrest. However, sources say that Kailash was 4 years old and had an infection in kidney, due to which he had an increased level of creatinine. Leptospirosis is spread by rat urine and despite deaths, in Park no control of mongoose and rats has been done yet. Now there are 3 tigers and as many lions left here but and they too face risk of death! JPC/010/2019-21 Washington: The 2020 US Presidential elec- tion is much different than previous elections owing to people being nervous about the coun- try’s future amid nearly 8 per cent unemploy- ment and more than 231,000 COVID-19 deaths. The division and anxiety are evident in conversations among voters in long lines outside early voting places and across browning autumn lawns where warring yard signs pit neigh- bor against neighbor, said The New York Times. According to the NYT report, a fundamental unease about the coun- try hovers over most other concerns voters describe as they cast ballots: The future of America troubles them more than whether they may lose a job in this recession, whether they could become ill in this pandemic, whether they could personally be harmed by violent crime. The national polling by the NYT and Siena College has stated that the voters fear the US could lose its democracy. “That sentiment means different things to voters on the left and the right. Republicans describe fears of creep- ing socialism from within the Democratic Party and deep changes in American values amid protests against the police and histori- cal figures. Democrats fear threats to democ- racy from within the White House itself, as they describe Trump undermining the coun- try’s institutions and rule of law,” the NYT stated. —ANI Nervous Americans cast ballots amid corona US ELECTIONS 2020 Naresh Sharma Jaipur: Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has said that the under construc- tion petroleum refinery in Barmer is a huge dream of the people of Rajasthanandespecially the western region, due to which the economic development will touch new heights. • 11. n a new series, our writers ex- plore their best worst film. They’ll tell you what the critics got wrong – and why it’s time to give these movies another chance. While some may know John Waters through his family friendly Hair- spray (1988) – adapted into a stage musical in 2002 and back to the screen in 2007 – many know him as the Prince of Puke, the King of Bad Taste or the Pope of Trash. Perhaps his most no- torious film is the ex- ploitation comedy Pink Flamingos (1972), the first in his “Trash Tril- ogy”, which also in- cludes Female Trouble (1974) and Desperate Living (1977). Pink Flamingos is em- blematic of Waters’ camp aesthetic, juxta- posing grotesque sub- ject matter against pas- tel colours, kitsch props and bubblegum pop mu- sic. Waters’ muse Divine is Babs Johnson, the “filthiest person alive.” She lives with her moth- er Edie (Edith Massey), who dresses as a baby, sits in a crib and screams for eggs; her ghoulish lover Cotton (Mary Viv- ian Pearce); and her son Crackers (Danny Mills), who, in a particularly gruesome moment, has sex with a woman while a live chicken is crushed to death between their two bodies. But Babs’ title of “filthiest person alive” is at stake, and she must rival Raymond (David Lochary) and Connie Marble (Mink Stole), who kidnap women, im- prison and forcefully impregnate them, and sell their babies to les- bian couples. Variety’s first review is now famous, calling it “one of the most vile, stupid and repulsive films ever made.” BANNED FOR INDECENCY It wasn’t just the critics who were unimpressed. When distributors tried to bring the film to Aus- tralia in 1976, it was banned for “indecency”. A cut version was given an R rating and released that year theatrically. The film’s full version was eventually granted an X18+ rating, for por- nographic, non-simulat- ed sexual activity, re- stricting sale and hire of the film to the ACT and some regions of the NT. In 1997, for a 25th an- niversary cinematic re- release, the uncut film was again refused. The classification board said films could receive an R rating when sexual ac- tivity was “realistically simulated” – but not when it was “the real thing”. Films with unsimu- lated sexual activity, such as Catherine Breil- lat’s Romance (1999) and John Cameron Mitchell’s Shortbus (2006) have since been awarded R18+ classifi- cation, allowing the cat- egory to include them. But the full version of Pink Flamingos main- tains an X18+ rating. Even the National Film and Sound Archive’s 2017 screenings of banned films showed a cut version rated R18+. STUPID? NO: IT WAS GROUNDBREAKING Despite this recep- tion, Pink Flamingos is now heralded as ground- breaking. It shaped the boundaries of bad taste and gross out humour. There are several shocking scenes in the film. One sees Divine and Crackers break into the Marbles’ home where, after licking all the furniture, Divine fellates her son. Anoth- er sees a shot of a man flexing his prolapsed anus so it looks like it’s miming the words to “Surfin’ Bird”. But perhaps the most notorious is where, in the final scene, Divine eats dog faeces to the song “How Much is the Doggy in the Window?”. Just how much can you stomach when watching something dis- gusting? The characters in Pink Flamingos chal- lenge normative ideas around sexuality, gen- der and family. Con- fronting perceptions of “good taste”, Pink Fla- mingos attacked an elit- ist culture that excluded many communities, such as queer folk and punks. One reason being it is a Festival of love and others that you can get ready as much as you want. Considering this pandemic, I ordered everything online that too in advance, and kept all things in isolation for a week. I bought a new pink suit and jewellery with a matching facemask. I and my sister in law are helping each other in mehndi and makeup. We are going to do pooja with social distancing in our society in small groups. —PUJA MISHRA ASP Seema Hingonia
