COUNTDOWN TO THE FIRST LIST OF BJP CANDIDATES!
Different reactions are coming from people over the
key CEC meeting. On one hand there is discussion
about the list being released Sunday or Monday,
on the other hand, some are claiming that the list will be
released after October 5. It is to be noted that delay in the list
could be due to PM Modi’s visit to Chittorgarh today and pos-

to possible reaction, these people are claiming that
the list will be released only after October 5.

oosting the tempo
regarding the Ra-
jasthan Assembly
polls, which are
round the corner,
Prime Minister Narendra Modi
will once again visit Rajasthan;
second time in eight days, to ral-
ly the political momentum in his
party’s favour in the desert State.
While the PM landed in Jaipur
during his last visit to Rajasthan,
this time he will be visiting the
Chittorgarh area, the parliamen-
tary constituency of BJP Ra-
jasthan State President CP Joshi,
to target the voters of the Mewar-
Vagad region, which sends 28
legislators in the Rajasthan As-
sembly.
BJP is trying to overthrow the
Congress government in Ra-
jasthan and form its own govern-
ment. The meeting will be held
on the day of Gandhi Jayanti, in
the famous Sanwaliya Seth tem-
ple area of Chittorgarh district. In
such a situation, many political
implications of this meeting are
also being seen. This region has
traditionally been the ‘power
house’ since it is said in State’s
politics that the party that wins
Mewar, comes extremely close to
forming government.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister
Modi, will inaugurate and lay the
foundation stone worth crores of
rupees here. It is also believed that
the reason behind this is that, in
the Rajasthan Congress govern-
ment, Chief Minister Ashok Ge-
hlothasmademanybigannounce-
ments for Udaipur division.
Thus, On Monday morning,
Modi will dedicate to the nation
and lay the foundation stone for
various development projects
worth about `7,000 crore in Chit-
torgarh, Rajasthan among which
are the Mehsana — Bathinda —
Gurdaspur Gas Pipeline, LPG
Plant of HPCL at Abu Road, Ad-
ditional Storage at Ajmer Bot-
tling Plant of IOCL, 4-lane road
on NH-12 (New NH-52) on the
Darah-Jhalawar-Teendhar sec-
tion, foundation stone for con-
structing and widening Railway
Over Bridge (ROB) from two
lane to four lane in Sawai Mad-
hopur, dedicate Chittorgarh -
Neemuch Railway line and Kota
– Chittorgarh Electrified Railway
line while also dedicating tour-
ism facilities developed at Nath-
dwara under Swadesh Darshan
Scheme. Further, Prime Minister
will also dedicate the permanent
campus of Indian Institute of In-
formation Technology, Kota to
the nation.
Coming, days after Amit
Shah’s visit, PM Modi would be
much more apprised about the
political ground realities of the
State since Shah did spend time
with State leaders getting a clear
picture of the party’s situation,
challenges and what could be the
tentative strategies.

hy is our age
such a hectic
one? It is far
away from
the utopia of
tranquillity with plenty of
time that digital globaliza-
tion was supposed to bring.
Rather than simplifying
life, technology has con-
tributed towards making it
more hectic. We have cre-
ated artificial reasons to be
in a hurry. We seem to be
digging ourselves into our
own high-pressure graves.
The realization that life
is short causes many peo-
ple to rush through it, try-
ing to crowd as much ac-
tion into it as possible.
People seemingly hurry to
reach their goals for fear
that something or some-
one will prevent them
from doing so.
Many adults are fidgety,
have short attention span,
and always rush off into
something new. They find
it difficult to enjoy the pre-
sent moment because of
their hurry to experience
the future.
Some find their daily
routine uninteresting, so
they rush through these so-
called necessary evils as
fast as possible so as to
have more free time for
other activities. ‘Time is
money’, few live by this
principle and by the clock
and rarely enjoy their hard
work.Whatever the reason,
one’s life is a hectic race.
Where does it all lead to?
This hectic pace has re-
sulted in many stress-relat-
ed illnesses. Also, the
truthfulness of the saying
that ‘haste makes waste’is
seen in increasing traffic
accidents due to excessive
speed. It makes one won-
der, why is everyone in
such a hurry? Where is
everyone going?
Fast cars, fast-food
chains are the earmarks of
an age of haste that makes
ever increasing demands–
Faster! Quicker! More ef-
ficient! This age of mass
connection has increased
social isolation as well as
depression when it replac-
es warm personal contact.
A smile and the affection
that can be seen in a per-
son’s eyes cannot general-
ly be conveyed over the
phone or through a mes-
sage on a computer screen.
One may feel compelled
to cram more and more
work into one’s already
hectic life. This can make
one so engrossed in pursu-
ing one’s own interests that
there is no time to appreci-
ate what one already has or
to show appreciation for
what others have done.
Do we feel we are too
busy? Many say that they
find it hard to meet the de-
mands of both their work
and their home life and
they often feel rushed even
in their leisure time. Con-
stantly trying to do more
than what time may allow,
can make one a victim of
‘time pressure.’
Haste is caused by poor
scheduling of time or hav-
ing too many things on
one’s schedule. Squeezing
too many things into the
limited hours leads to
weariness.
One can gain more con-
trol over one’s life by do-
ing some judicious prun-
ing and keeping life simple
and uncluttered. We can
have a good look around
and ask ourselves, ‘Is this
thing really needed, or is it
a clutter? Does it add to the
quality of my life or does
it steal valuable time?’
Simplifying life gives
happiness. There is more
time for oneself, family
and friends. Only people
can receive and give love,
not gadgets and portfolios.
Giving priority to such ma-
terial things leads to dis-
satisfaction.
For a less hectic morn-
ing, it’s best to set aside
five minutes each day to
tidy up and make a plan
before going to bed. Hav-
ing some meaningful alone
time is a necessary tonic in
today’s rapid-fire world.
Alone time is a fuel for
life. It fills one’s personal
resource bank and gives
inner strength to handle
difficult and emotionally
charged situations. Being
too occupied to meditate
on important aspects of life
and handling serious mat-
ters superficiously causes
confusion.
The explosion of a vari-
ety of things has made time
feel more crunched as one
struggles to choose what to
buy, watch or eat in the
limited time one has avail-
able. Many feel a strong
connection between their
self-image and their pace
of life. Busyness has ac-
quired a social status. The
busier one is, the more im-
portant one seems. On the
other hand, having too
much rest also increases
time pressure.
Leading a balanced life
is good for one’s mental
and physical health. Those
who set boundaries be-
tween their jobs and homes
or take vacations find one
consistent revelation that
‘there is no catastrophe or
calamity while you are
away.’ Establishing and
maintaining routines re-
quires self-discipline. Rou-
tines are a part of life that
aid in accomplishing all
things by arrangement. Our
life is busy now, but it will
probably get busier. Better
one becomes organized
sooner rather than later!

PROTECTING CHILDREN
FROM POCSO TRAUMA
istory was made at Hangzhou Asian Games
on Saturday when India gave superlative
performances in squash, table tennis and ten-
nis to overcome their much fancied opponents. In
squash, India reclaimed the gold medal with a 2-1
victory over Pakistan in hard fought matches in
which Pakistan had an edge. On their way to gold
India also demolished another squash power house-
--Malaysia. The victory in the final was all the more
sweet as India had lost to Pakistan in the league
matches. ForAbhay Singh, who held his nerve in the
final to beat Noor Zaman, it was sweet revenge as he
had lost to the same rival in a league match.
In tennis, the old warhorse Rohan Bopanna (43)
and Rutuja Bhosale combined to win the gold in
mixed doubles.
Show stoppers, however, were two Mukherjees
– Sutirtha andAyhika – childhood friends from Ben-
gal who stunned the reigning world champions, who
have never been defeated inAsiad, with an emphatic
victory in the quarter-finals.
H
he Law Commission has made an important
suggestion in its report on the age of con-
sent to dilute the severity of Protection of
Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) without
“tinkering” with the “existing age of consent” which
is 18 years. To keep adolescent sexual acts out of
the criminal law’s purview the law panel has sug-
gested the inclusion of “guided judicial discretion
in the matter of sentencing in cases of consensual
romantic relationship between adolescents”. This is
to safeguard “the
best interests of the
child”.
The law panel is,
however, against
further lowering of
the age of consent
from 18 to 16. The
panel’s report on
Age of Consent un-
der the Protection of
Children from Sexu-
al Offences Act,
2012 calls for
amendments to the
Act for cases in
which there is no
consent but only
tacit approval.
Due to the strict
POCSO law judges
rarely give bail. This
causes social stigma
and consequent
mental trauma if the
case turns out to be false, which is often the case as
girls’parents accuse the boy.Adolescence being the
age of exploration and curiosity, there is tacit ap-
proval for a sexual act which the society is not ready
to accept. That is why the panel states that “the blan-
ket criminalization of sexual activity amongst and
with a child is leading to incarceration of young
boys and girls who engage in such acts as a conse-
quence of sexual curiosity and exploration that may
to some extent be normative for an adolescent…”
Judicial discretion would also prevent misuse of law
by investigative agencies.

on doing the right thing and leaving no one behind. “We
are approaching Gandhi Jayanti, I would like to leave you a
thought. To say he (Mahatma Gandhi) was an extraordinary
man would be the understatement of this century. He said
so many things so tellingly...The message at the end of the
day was about doing the right thing, about doing the decent
thing and about leaving no one behind. Gandhi Ji’s message
is very very, very simple,” Jaishankar said. He added, “What
we tried to do in G20, the underlying thinking, reflected what
we are trying to do in India, what I think many Americans are
trying to do in America, what we India and America should
be doing with the world, which is to leave no one behind”.

I confess to you that, when doubts haunt me,
when disappointments stare me in the face,
and when I see not one ray of light on the
horizon, I run to the Bhagavad Gita and find a
verse to comfort me, and I immediately begin
to smile in the midst of overwhelming sorrow.
—MK Gandhi
o one really knows the moment when
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi be-
came Mahatma Gandhi, it is not a title
conferred after research or clearing an
examination but the heartfelt and
spontaneous tribute of a nation. I have
read in reminisces that in the middle of a boisterous
crowd of thousands, Gandhi only had to lift his hand if
he needed quiet and the sounds and voices would die
away, to silence.
Most of us today have not seen Gandhi in real life but
know of him through his photographs, his writings to
those who have taken the pains to read him and the
hundreds of national and international figures who have
written about him, in praise, criticism or factually. I
have come to believe that to understand Gandhi one
must see him beyond politics and focus on his spiritual
message, we must go to the core of Satya and Ahimsa.
For Gandhi, spiritualism could not be separated from
politics or any other sphere of life.
I quote the second President of India, a revered phi-
losopher and teacher, Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan on
Gandhi, as I feel it is closest to describing who Bapu
was. “Gandhi’s life was rooted in India’s religious tradi-
tion with its emphasis on a passionate search for truth,
a profound reverence for life, the ideal of non-attach-
ment and the readiness to sacrifice all for the knowledge
of God. He lives his whole life in the perpetual quest of
truth: ‘I live and move and have my being in the pursuit
of this goal.’
A profound thing is that for Gandhi humanity was
one and indivisible. He deeply believed that in degrad-
ing or brutalising others, man did the same to himself.
The perpetuators of oppression and exploitation. This
is a thought which the world needs to think over as in-
dividuals and nations.
For me the three important lessons learnt from Gan-
dhi’s life are simple- even one person CAN make a
difference and strength does not come from physical
power but an indomitable will. And possibly the most
important that spirituality, morality, politics and eco-
nomics are inseparable.
N
“Cow protection is the gift of Hinduism to the
world. And Hinduism will live so long as there
are Hindus to protect the cow…… Hindus will
be judged not by their TILAKS, not by the
correct chanting of MANTRAS, not by their
pilgrimages, not by their most punctilious
observances of caste rules, but their ability to
protect the cow.” —MK Gandhi

Lal Bahadur Shastri, the second Prime Minister
of India was a man of great simplicity and
integrity with an unwavering commitment
to the welfare of his fellow citizens. We
remember him on his birth anniversary and
pay tribute to our great leader!
al Bahadur Shastri’s
early exposure to the
teachings of Mahatma
Gandhi, who was lead-
ing the Indian inde-
pendence movement,
deeply influenced his values and princi-
ples and was instrumental in his actively
joining the Indian freedom struggle
against British colonial rule. He was im-
prisoned several times for his involve-
ment in various protests and agitations
and had a steadfast commitment to the
principles of non-violence.
After India’s independence he contin-
ued his journey in public service, hold-
ing various ministerial positions, includ-
ing the role of Minister for Railways and
Transport. Lal Bahadur Shastri played a
crucial role in ushering in the Green
Revolution in India. As the country faced
severe food shortages in the 1960s, Shas-
tri initiated policies to increase agricul-
tural productivity. His call of “Jai Jawan,
Jai Kisan” resonated with the nation and
inspired farmers to increase their efforts.
Following the untimely demise of
Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal
Bahadur Shastri became the Prime Min-
ister of India on June 9, 1964. His tenure
was marked by several challenges, in-
cluding the aftermath of the Sino-Indian
War of 1962 and ongoing tensions with
Pakistan.
During the Indo-Pakistani War of
1965, inTashkent, Uzbekistan, he signed
the Tashkent Agreement with Pakistani
PresidentAyub Khan, bringing an end to
the war and emphasizing the importance
of peaceful coexistence.His sudden and
untimely death on January 11, 1966, in
Tashkent, was a great loss to the nation.
In recognition of his outstanding contri-
butions to the country, the government
of India posthumously awarded him the
Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian
award, in 1966.
Lal Bahadur Shastri’s leadership was
characterized by simplicity, honesty, and
a deep concern for the welfare of ordi-
nary citizens. He remains a symbol of
humility and integrity in Indian politics.
His emphasis on simplicity and integrity
in governance remains relevant in the
contemporary political landscape.

The unique thing about our country is
that we have Hindus, Muslims,
Christians, Sikhs, Parsis, and people of
all other religions. We have temples
and mosques, gurdwaras and
churches. But we do not bring all this
into politics... This is the difference
between India and Pakistan.

ndia celebrated its ninth Na-
tional Handloom Day on 7th
August 2023. This day is to
pay tribute to the handloom
heritage of India and to ap-
preciate the efforts of the
handloom weavers of India.
The foundation of Handloom Day
was laid by Prime Minister Naren-
dra Modi on 7 August 2015 in
Chennai. The day was chosen be-
cause of the important role it
played in the Swadeshi move-
ment that was launched in the
year 1905.
The skilled hands of Indian
weavers turn cotton, wool,
linen and silk threads into
priceless textiles. With
careful planning on the
loom, a variety of de-
signs and patterns are
created on the fabric by
hand, that is why we
call it handloom fabric.
There is no comparison
to the colours, weaves and
patterns achieved in In-
dian handloom
textiles.
According
to the fourth
All India
Handloom
Census (2019-20), there are 26,73,891 hand-
loom weavers and 8,48,621 allied workers in
the country. Wherein the number of fam-
ilies engagedinhandloomactivities was
31.45 lakh. It is estimated that India
produces 95 per cent of the world’s
handwoven fabric.
Today, more people are now con-
scious and sensitive about using han-
dloom fabrics but many still end up
buying clothes made from power-
looms , partially due to not enough
knowledge of handmade products.
The good news is that the new gen-
eration is accepting handlooms with
open arms as handloom products
can be styled in a variety of ways for
different occasions.
To convert Prime Minister’s vision
of 5F’s—Farm to Fibre to Fabric to
Fashion to Foreign—into reality, the
government is actively supporting the
weavers through various schemes.
Schemes like National Handloom De-
velopment Programme (NHDP),
Comprehensive Handloom Cluster De-
velopment Scheme (CHCDS), Hand-
loom Weavers Comprehensive Welfare
Scheme (HWCWS) and Yarn Supply
Scheme (YSS) are implemented by the
Development Commissioner for Hand-
looms, Ministry of Textiles.
Under these schemes, all kinds of fi-
nancial assistance are provided for pur-
chase of raw materials, looms and ac-
cessories, design innovation, product
diversification, infrastructure devel-
opment, skill upgradation, lighting
units, marketing of handloom prod-
ucts and loans at concessional rates.
On Gandhi Jayanti, we direct the attention of our readers
towards the rich handloom heritage of our nation and
ask you to celebrate the handlooms with us!

Shashikant Sharma and Aditi Nagar oosting the tempo regarding the Ra- jasthan Assembly polls, which are round the corner, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will once again visit Rajasthan; second time in eight days, to ral- ly the political momentum in his party’s favour in the desert State. While the PM landed in Jaipur during his last visit to Rajasthan, this time he will be visiting the Chittorgarh area, the parliamen- tary constituency of BJP Ra- jasthan State President CP Joshi, to target the voters of the Mewar- Vagad region, which sends 28 legislators in the Rajasthan As- sembly. BJP is trying to overthrow the Congress government in Ra- jasthan and form its own govern- ment. The meeting will be held on the day of Gandhi Jayanti, in the famous Sanwaliya Seth tem- ple area of Chittorgarh district. In such a situation, many political implications of this meeting are also being seen. This region has traditionally been the ‘power house’ since it is said in State’s politics that the party that wins Mewar, comes extremely close to forming government. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Modi, will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone worth crores of rupees here. It is also believed that the reason behind this is that, in the Rajasthan Congress govern- ment, Chief Minister Ashok Ge- hlothasmademanybigannounce- ments for Udaipur division. Thus, On Monday morning, Modi will dedicate to the nation and lay the foundation stone for various development projects worth about `7,000 crore in Chit- torgarh, Rajasthan among which are the Mehsana — Bathinda — Gurdaspur Gas Pipeline, LPG Plant of HPCL at Abu Road, Ad- ditional Storage at Ajmer Bot- tling Plant of IOCL, 4-lane road on NH-12 (New NH-52) on the Darah-Jhalawar-Teendhar sec- tion, foundation stone for con- structing and widening Railway Over Bridge (ROB) from two lane to four lane in Sawai Mad- hopur, dedicate Chittorgarh - Neemuch Railway line and Kota – Chittorgarh Electrified Railway line while also dedicating tour- ism facilities developed at Nath- dwara under Swadesh Darshan Scheme. Further, Prime Minister will also dedicate the permanent campus of Indian Institute of In- formation Technology, Kota to the nation. Coming, days after Amit Shah’s visit, PM Modi would be much more apprised about the political ground realities of the State since Shah did spend time with State leaders getting a clear picture of the party’s situation, challenges and what could be the tentative strategies. • 7. hy is our age such a hectic one? It is far away from the utopia of tranquillity with plenty of time that digital globaliza- tion was supposed to bring. Rather than simplifying life, technology has con- tributed towards making it more hectic. We have cre- ated artificial reasons to be in a hurry. We seem to be digging ourselves into our own high-pressure graves. The realization that life is short causes many peo- ple to rush through it, try- ing to crowd as much ac- tion into it as possible. People seemingly hurry to reach their goals for fear that something or some- one will prevent them from doing so. Many adults are fidgety, have short attention span, and always rush off into something new. They find it difficult to enjoy the pre- sent moment because of their hurry to experience the future. Some find their daily routine uninteresting, so they rush through these so- called necessary evils as fast as possible so as to have more free time for other activities. ‘Time is money’, few live by this principle and by the clock and rarely enjoy their hard work.Whatever the reason, one’s life is a hectic race. Where does it all lead to? This hectic pace has re- sulted in many stress-relat- ed illnesses. Also, the truthfulness of the saying that ‘haste makes waste’is seen in increasing traffic accidents due to excessive speed. It makes one won- der, why is everyone in such a hurry? Where is everyone going? Fast cars, fast-food chains are the earmarks of an age of haste that makes ever increasing demands– Faster! Quicker! More ef- ficient! This age of mass connection has increased social isolation as well as depression when it replac- es warm personal contact. A smile and the affection that can be seen in a per- son’s eyes cannot general- ly be conveyed over the phone or through a mes- sage on a computer screen. One may feel compelled to cram more and more work into one’s already hectic life. This can make one so engrossed in pursu- ing one’s own interests that there is no time to appreci- ate what one already has or to show appreciation for what others have done. Do we feel we are too busy? Many say that they find it hard to meet the de- mands of both their work and their home life and they often feel rushed even in their leisure time. Con- stantly trying to do more than what time may allow, can make one a victim of ‘time pressure.’ Haste is caused by poor scheduling of time or hav- ing too many things on one’s schedule. Squeezing too many things into the limited hours leads to weariness. One can gain more con- trol over one’s life by do- ing some judicious prun- ing and keeping life simple and uncluttered. We can have a good look around and ask ourselves, ‘Is this thing really needed, or is it a clutter? Does it add to the quality of my life or does it steal valuable time?’ Simplifying life gives happiness. There is more time for oneself, family and friends. Only people can receive and give love, not gadgets and portfolios. Giving priority to such ma- terial things leads to dis- satisfaction. For a less hectic morn- ing, it’s best to set aside five minutes each day to tidy up and make a plan before going to bed. Hav- ing some meaningful alone time is a necessary tonic in today’s rapid-fire world. Alone time is a fuel for life. It fills one’s personal resource bank and gives inner strength to handle difficult and emotionally charged situations. Being too occupied to meditate on important aspects of life and handling serious mat- ters superficiously causes confusion. The explosion of a vari- ety of things has made time feel more crunched as one struggles to choose what to buy, watch or eat in the limited time one has avail- able. Many feel a strong connection between their self-image and their pace of life. Busyness has ac- quired a social status. The busier one is, the more im- portant one seems. On the other hand, having too much rest also increases time pressure. Leading a balanced life is good for one’s mental and physical health. Those who set boundaries be- tween their jobs and homes or take vacations find one consistent revelation that ‘there is no catastrophe or calamity while you are away.’ Establishing and maintaining routines re- quires self-discipline. IN-DEPTH FRIENDS FROM BENGAL TURN SHOW-STOPPERS PROTECTING CHILDREN FROM POCSO TRAUMA istory was made at Hangzhou Asian Games on Saturday when India gave superlative performances in squash, table tennis and ten- nis to overcome their much fancied opponents. In squash, India reclaimed the gold medal with a 2-1 victory over Pakistan in hard fought matches in which Pakistan had an edge. On their way to gold India also demolished another squash power house- --Malaysia. The victory in the final was all the more sweet as India had lost to Pakistan in the league matches. ForAbhay Singh, who held his nerve in the final to beat Noor Zaman, it was sweet revenge as he had lost to the same rival in a league match. In tennis, the old warhorse Rohan Bopanna (43) and Rutuja Bhosale combined to win the gold in mixed doubles. Show stoppers, however, were two Mukherjees – Sutirtha andAyhika – childhood friends from Ben- gal who stunned the reigning world champions, who have never been defeated inAsiad, with an emphatic victory in the quarter-finals. H he Law Commission has made an important suggestion in its report on the age of con- sent to dilute the severity of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) without “tinkering” with the “existing age of consent” which is 18 years. To keep adolescent sexual acts out of the criminal law’s purview the law panel has sug- gested the inclusion of “guided judicial discretion in the matter of sentencing in cases of consensual romantic relationship between adolescents”. This is to safeguard “the best interests of the child”. The law panel is, however, against further lowering of the age of consent from 18 to 16. The panel’s report on Age of Consent un- der the Protection of Children from Sexu- al Offences Act, 2012 calls for amendments to the Act for cases in which there is no consent but only tacit approval. Due to the strict POCSO law judges rarely give bail. This causes social stigma and consequent mental trauma if the case turns out to be false, which is often the case as girls’parents accuse the boy.Adolescence being the age of exploration and curiosity, there is tacit ap- proval for a sexual act which the society is not ready to accept. That is why the panel states that “the blan- ket criminalization of sexual activity amongst and with a child is leading to incarceration of young boys and girls who engage in such acts as a conse- quence of sexual curiosity and exploration that may to some extent be normative for an adolescent…” Judicial discretion would also prevent misuse of law by investigative agencies. Anita Hada anita.hada@firstindianews.com I confess to you that, when doubts haunt me, when disappointments stare me in the face, and when I see not one ray of light on the horizon, I run to the Bhagavad Gita and find a verse to comfort me, and I immediately begin to smile in the midst of overwhelming sorrow. —MK Gandhi o one really knows the moment when Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi be- came Mahatma Gandhi, it is not a title conferred after research or clearing an examination but the heartfelt and spontaneous tribute of a nation. I have read in reminisces that in the middle of a boisterous crowd of thousands, Gandhi only had to lift his hand if he needed quiet and the sounds and voices would die away, to silence. Most of us today have not seen Gandhi in real life but know of him through his photographs, his writings to those who have taken the pains to read him and the hundreds of national and international figures who have written about him, in praise, criticism or factually. I have come to believe that to understand Gandhi one must see him beyond politics and focus on his spiritual message, we must go to the core of Satya and Ahimsa. For Gandhi, spiritualism could not be separated from politics or any other sphere of life. I quote the second President of India, a revered phi- losopher and teacher, Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan on Gandhi, as I feel it is closest to describing who Bapu was. “Gandhi’s life was rooted in India’s religious tradi- tion with its emphasis on a passionate search for truth, a profound reverence for life, the ideal of non-attach- ment and the readiness to sacrifice all for the knowledge of God. He lives his whole life in the perpetual quest of truth: ‘I live and move and have my being in the pursuit of this goal.’ A profound thing is that for Gandhi humanity was one and indivisible. He deeply believed that in degrad- ing or brutalising others, man did the same to himself. The perpetuators of oppression and exploitation. This is a thought which the world needs to think over as in- dividuals and nations. For me the three important lessons learnt from Gan- dhi’s life are simple- even one person CAN make a difference and strength does not come from physical power but an indomitable will. And possibly the most important that spirituality, morality, politics and eco- nomics are inseparable. N “Cow protection is the gift of Hinduism to the world. And Hinduism will live so long as there are Hindus to protect the cow…… Hindus will be judged not by their TILAKS, not by the correct chanting of MANTRAS, not by their pilgrimages, not by their most punctilious observances of caste rules, but their ability to protect the cow.” —MK Gandhi

We remember him on his birth anniversary and pay tribute to our great leader! al Bahadur Shastri’s early exposure to the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, who was lead- ing the Indian inde- pendence movement, deeply influenced his values and princi- ples and was instrumental in his actively joining the Indian freedom struggle against British colonial rule. He was im- prisoned several times for his involve- ment in various protests and agitations and had a steadfast commitment to the principles of non-violence. After India’s independence he contin- ued his journey in public service, hold- ing various ministerial positions, includ- ing the role of Minister for Railways and Transport. Lal Bahadur Shastri played a crucial role in ushering in the Green Revolution in India. As the country faced severe food shortages in the 1960s, Shas- tri initiated policies to increase agricul- tural productivity. His call of “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan” resonated with the nation and inspired farmers to increase their efforts. Following the untimely demise of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri became the Prime Min- ister of India on June 9, 1964. His tenure was marked by several challenges, in- cluding the aftermath of the Sino-Indian War of 1962 and ongoing tensions with Pakistan. During the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965, inTashkent, Uzbekistan, he signed the Tashkent Agreement with Pakistani PresidentAyub Khan, bringing an end to the war and emphasizing the importance of peaceful coexistence. His sudden and untimely death on January 11, 1966, in Tashkent, was a great loss to the nation. In recognition of his outstanding contri- butions to the country, the government of India posthumously awarded him the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, in 1966. Lal Bahadur Shastri’s leadership was characterized by simplicity, honesty, and a deep concern for the welfare of ordi- nary citizens. He remains a symbol of humility and integrity in Indian politics. His emphasis on simplicity and integrity in governance remains relevant in the contemporary political landscape. • 14. Handloom JAIPUR, MONDAY | OCTOBER 2, 2023 13 firstindia.co.in firstindia.co.in/epapers/jaipur thefirstindia thefirstindia thefirstindia City First cityfirst@firstindia.co.in ndia celebrated its ninth Na- tional Handloom Day on 7th August 2023. This day is to pay tribute to the handloom heritage of India and to ap- preciate the efforts of the handloom weavers of India. The foundation of Handloom Day was laid by Prime Minister Naren- dra Modi on 7 August 2015 in Chennai. The day was chosen be- cause of the important role it played in the Swadeshi move- ment that was launched in the year 1905. The skilled hands of Indian weavers turn cotton, wool, linen and silk threads into priceless textiles. With careful planning on the loom, a variety of de- signs and patterns are created on the fabric by hand, that is why we call it handloom fabric. There is no comparison to the colours, weaves and patterns achieved in In- dian handloom textiles. According to the fourth All India Handloom Census (2019-20), there are 26,73,891 hand- loom weavers and 8,48,621 allied workers in the country. Wherein the number of fam- ilies engagedinhandloomactivities was 31.45 lakh. It is estimated that India produces 95 per cent of the world’s handwoven fabric. Today, more people are now con- scious and sensitive about using han- dloom fabrics but many still end up buying clothes made from power- looms , partially due to not enough knowledge of handmade products. The good news is that the new gen- eration is accepting handlooms with open arms as handloom products can be styled in a variety of ways for different occasions. To convert Prime Minister’s vision of 5F’s—Farm to Fibre to Fabric to Fashion to Foreign—into reality, the government is actively supporting the weavers through various schemes. Schemes like National Handloom De- velopment Programme (NHDP), Comprehensive Handloom Cluster De- velopment Scheme (CHCDS), Hand- loom Weavers Comprehensive Welfare Scheme (HWCWS) and Yarn Supply Scheme (YSS) are implemented by the Development Commissioner for Hand- looms, Ministry of Textiles. Under these schemes, all kinds of fi- nancial assistance are provided for pur- chase of raw materials, looms and ac- cessories, design innovation, product diversification, infrastructure devel- opment, skill upgradation, lighting units, marketing of handloom prod- ucts and loans at concessional rates.
