BUT IN RAJ,
BIRTHDAY
BOY GEHLOT
GIVES A SAVING
GRACE TO THE PARTY
Aditi Nagar
here seldom comes a leader whose politics influences not just the
party but an entire region, whose reach is far beyond his own terri-
tory, into the hearts of the people of far away too and such a leader
can only come when one is genuinely an altruistic person. Today,
marks the seventieth year in the life of ‘Marwar’s Gandhi’ Ashok Ge-
hlot and even as lakhs of people want to wish him on his birthday,
the three time chief minister has decided not to celebrate it, as
a mark of respect towards those who have been stung by the Corona virus
and the havoc it is wreaking on Gehlot’s ‘pyaro’ Rajasthan. Handling
the Corona situation is itself a tiresome job but amid all this,
he has managed to give the Congress party, an ‘oasis’ in the
sweltering ‘dry patch’ of electoral politics, where Con-
gress has performed poorly in all the 4 states and 1 Un-
ion Territory namely of West Bengal, Assam, Tamil
Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry , whereas under Ge-
hlot, Congress managed to win two bypolls even
after political pandits claimed an anti-incumbency
in the state.
But what might seem to be a moment of cele-
bration for several others, does not excite Ge-
hlot. The reason: the stalwart considers saving
people’s lives much more important than car-
rying out political agendas in a crisis. And this
is the reason that Gehlot on Sunday, once
again called out the opposition parties and
Central government to work ‘hand in hand’
in order to weed out corona from the state.
The chief minister, just like during the first
wave, has again asked the state BJP leaders
to voice Rajasthan’s concerns before their
bosses in Delhi and help the people, be-
cause after all that is what Gehlot’s ‘dhar-
ma’ is: Rajasthan, Rajasthan and Ra-
jasthan.
Even though down with the virus him-
self, the Chief Minister is continuously
fighting corona on two fronts i.e. outisde
and inside, literally. Like the tenacious
politician he is; it is sure that he will not
give up on the state and has appealed
to the people to help him, help them.
And why does he take such pains for
them? Not because he is represent-
ing a political party, not merely be-
cause he holds a constitutional
office and definitely not because
he wants to earn and make a
name for himself; but because
there is an underlying zeal
for the state which in own
words goes like this: “Main
Thansu Door Koni”...
Therefore, Happy Birthday
Mr. CM!

Cochin: The Left re-
wrote history in Kerala
on Sunday by becoming
the first government to
get a second term in
four decades but its for-
tunes fell to a historic
low in West Bengal
where it failed to bag
even one seat, resulting
in its complete decima-
tion in a state it once
ruled for over three
decades.
Blank for Left in Ben-
gal: The Left’s fall in
Bengal was a sharp one.
It not only drew a blank
in the 2019 national
elections but lost its tra-
ditional supporters to
the BJP, as conceded by
its own leaders. Matters
came to such a pass that
the 2021 assembly polls
became a bipolar con-
test between the BJP

NDA TO RETAIN POWER IN ASSAM
Puducherry: The AINRC-led NDA looked
all set to capture power in Puducherry by
winning 16 assembly seats and leading
in two when the results for 22 out of
the total 30 segments were declared on
Sunday. The Congress-led front emerged
victorious in five constituencies.
Guwahati: The ruling BJP-led NDA in
Assam is all set to retain power and won
48 seats and was leading in 24 assembly
seats. The BJP alone has won 35 and
was leading in 22. Asom Gana Parishad
won eight seat. The Grand Alliance led

from the Election Com-

likely to win 74 seats.
In Tamil Nadu, MK

First India Bureau
Jaipur: As the medical
oxygen quota of Ra-
jasthan has been in-
creased, the state is now
facing shortage of tank-
ers to transport it.
Centre has increased
100 metric tonne quota
of oxygen for the state
that is to be transported
from remote areas like
Burnpur, Balinganagar,
and Jamnagar for
which the state needs 54
additional tankers.
The Centre has de-
posed before the Su-
preme Court that there
are 2,416 cryogenic
tankers available in the
country, the minister
said.
The state needs 54 additional tankers to
transport oxygen which is a new chal-
lenge. We are, however, to sort out the is-
sue with the coordination of the Cen-
tre and other states. The state has
only 23 tankers available out of
which four tankers are used for
transportation of nitrogen of

According to the
Election Commission
data, the Congress got
the highest 51.04% votes
in all three seats while
BJP got 34.98% and oth-
er parties including In-
dependents got 12.44%
votes. This time, nearly
1.55% voters pressed
the NOTA button.
SYMPATHY FACTOR!
The sympathy wave ap-
parently worked in all
three seats as the parties
had fielded kin of the de-

chargesof nepotismalso
at the time of ticket allo-

cause all the three candi-

NEPOTISM MYTH
BROKEN!
The results have broken
the state’s 56-year-old
record and myth. In the
by-elections held since
1965 in the state, no one
had won if tickets were
allocated to the kin of
the deceased leaders. So
far no party had benefit-
ed from the sympathy
card in the by-election,
but this time the sympa-
thy card has been suc-
cessful in all three seats.
PITLIYA FACTOR
DAMAGES BJP
In Sahada, the BJP has
suffered huge loss due
to the controversy over
forcing BJP rebel Ladu-
lal Pitliya to withdraw
from the electoral fray.
Viral audio of Pitliya’s
refusal to let the BJP
contest the elections
caused damage to the
BJP. At the same time,
Gayatri Trivedi, wife of

MAHARANA REMARK
HAUNTS BJP
In Rajsamand, the state-
ment made on Mahara-

Opposition Gulab
Chand Kataria played a
major role in swinging
the votes. Party candi-

with the lowest margin
of 5,310 votes. There
was a direct contest be-
tween Deepti and Con-
gress’ Tansukh Bohara.
RLP DENTS BJP

BJP’s credibility in Su-

TIME TO QUIT THIS SPACE,
SAYS PRASHANT KISHOR
“I do not want to continue what I am doing. I have done enough. Time for me to take a break and
do something else in life. I want to quit this space,” poll strategist Prashant Kishor said on Sunday
Kolkata: Even as
trends indicate that Tri-
namool Congress is
likely to win big in the
West Bengal Assembly
elections with the party
leading in more than
200 seats, poll strategist
Prashant Kishor said
on Sunday that he is
quitting as an election
strategist.
“I do not want to con-
tinue what I am doing. I
have done enough.
Time for me to take a
break and do something
else in life. I want to
quit this space,” Kishor
told. He added, “In this
victory, I am saying, I
am quitting and I don’t
want to do this any-
more. I have had
enough.”
On being asked
whether he would re-
join politics, he told, “I
am a failed politician. I
have to go back and see
what I have to do.”
Kishor also told that he
was “quitting this
space” and would not
strategise for parties
any more. Kishor also
alleged that the Elec-
tion Commission “has
been working like an
extension of BJP”.
“From allowing use of
religion by BJP to
scheduling poll and
bending rules, EC did
everything to aid the
saffron party,” he said.
Back in December last
year, Kishor had said
that the BJP tally would
struggle to cross double
digits and he would quit
if he was proven wrong.
Senior BJP leader
Kailash Vijayvargiya
had then sneered: “With
the ongoing BJP tsuna-
mi in Bengal, after
forming the govt we
will see the country lose
a poll strategist.”On
Sunday, Kishor’s old
tweet was trending with
trends suggesting that

not cross 100 seats. —PTI

Enforce Pandemic...
Red Alert - Mass Disci-
pline Fortnight starting
Monday through a vid-
eo conference on Sun-
day night. “Due to the
increasing infection,
the consumption of ox-
ygen in the state is in-
creasing rapidly. Since
the central government
is allocating oxygen un-
der the National Plan, it
is very important to in-
crease the amount of
allocation in view of
Rajasthan’s needs.
There has been an ad-
ditional increase of 350
metric tonnes in the
production capacity of
oxygen at the Jamnagar
plant. Therefore, Ra-
jasthan should get allot-
ment of extra oxygen
from there,” Gehlot
said.
It was informed in
the meeting that about
50 tankers are being im-
ported by the Central
Government through
various companies. Ge-
hlot said that the Gov-
ernment of India has
not provided sufficient
number of tankers for
oxygen lift, due to
which there is a lot of
problem regarding the
transport of oxygen
from remote places. He
directed that the offi-
cials should be given
responsibility to ensure
immediate lifting of the
entire amount of oxy-
gen allocated to the
state under the Nation-
al Plan.
The Chief Minister
instructed to purchase
the oxygen concentra-
tor at the earliest. He
said that a committee
of officials constituted
for importing them
from abroad should
speed up the process so
that patients can be
treated.
“The state govern-
ment is working with
all its efforts to provide
better treatment to Cov-
id patients, but public
participation is equally
necessary to break the
chain of infection. If we
can discipline our be-
havior and ensure the
implementation of the
protocol, then we will
be able to succeed to a
great extent in fighting
this challenge. In addi-
tion to the permissible
activities during the
Pandemic Red Alert -
Public Discipline Fort-
night, no person should
roam about aimlessly
. If
no one follows the pro-
tocol then strict action
will be taken,” Gehlot
said and instructed that
a flag march should be
conducted on Monday
for the cradle of the
guideline.
Medical and Health
Minister Dr. Raghu
Sharma said that the
Medical and Health De-
partment is engaged
day and night for the
management of Covid.
“Our whole endeavor is
to ensure proper utiliza-
tion of available re-
sources for the survival
of the people of the
state. The medical de-
partment team is dis-
charging its obligations
with full commitment
in this hour of crisis,”
he said.
MoS Medicine and
Health, Dr. Subhash
Garg said that keeping
in view the upcoming
challenges, efforts
should be made to set
up more and more oxy-
gen plants in the state
through the private sec-
tor, so that we are ready
to face any pandemic in
future. Chief Secretary
Niranjan Arya in-
formed that intensive
monitoring is being
done through nodal of-
ficers to increase the
number of tankers and
the quota of oxygen,
complete lifting, early
purchase of concentra-
tor and oxygen produc-
tion in Dariba and
Chanderia.
‘POWER HOUSE’...
Speaking to the press in
Kolkata, Mamata said,
“Covid is my first prior-
ity
. We will work on this
immediately. We will
not do a big oath-taking
ceremony. We will
weather this storm. We
will distribute free vac-
cines to everyone. Also
request the Centre to
distribute free vaccines
to all. If this does not
happen, I will sit on a
dharna in front of the
Gandhi Murti in Kolka-
ta. We appeal to every-
one not to do a victory
rally now. We will do a
big victory rally at the

later after the situation
is normal.”

Historic day...
The CPI(M) in a polit-
buro statement said the
results of the five as-
sembly polls were a re-
sounding defeat for the
BJP
, but shed very little
light on its own losses.
“BJP suffered a se-
vere setback despite its
money power and ma-
nipulationsinWestBen-
gal. People of Bengal
have very clearly reject-
ed the ideology of com-
munal polarisation.
“The performance of
the Sanjukta Morcha
and the Left has been
very disappointing. Peo-
ple’s urge to defeat the
BJP led to a sharp po-
larisation squeezing out
the Sanjukta Morcha. A
self-critical review of
these results will be un-
dertaken by the party to
draw needed lessons,” it
said. In the run-up to the
assembly polls, the Left
continued to cut a sorry
figure in Bengal. Its vote
share fell to 40 per cent
in 2011 from 50 per cent
in 2006. It plunged fur-
ther to 26 per cent in the
2016 assembly polls.
While questions and
murmurs within party
remained about partner-
ing with the Congress,
which had little or no
presence on the ground
in the state, senior lead-
ers of the party weighed
in and chose to ally with
them. Many even ques-
tioned the logic of part-
nering with party which
fails to even transfer
votes to its allies.
13 Opposition...
“In times of the uncon-
trollable surge of the
pandemic across our
country, we call upon
the Central government
to focus all attention in
ensuring the uninter-
rupted flow of Oxygen
supplies to all hospitals
and health centres
across the country,”
they said in a joint state-
ment.
The opposition lead-
ers said the budgetary

Jaipur: In what could
be termed as a thump-
ing victory, the Con-
gress party has man-
aged to regain its hold
on Sahada assembly
constituency in the by-
polls. While thousands
of Congress workers
have put in their efforts
in the constituency, but
their efforts might have
proved naught, had
there not been an expe-
rienced campaigner
like Health Minister Dr
Raghu Sharma at hand.
Raghu had earlier
proved his 'efficacy' in
the Ramgarh by-polls,
where he ensured vic-
tory for his party and
now when he was given
the charge of Sahada
by-polls, he has yet
again proved his mettle.
The Health Minister
could achieve the 'mar-
vellous feat' of a victory
of over 42,000 votes in
Congress's favour be-
cause at his side, he al-
ways had a seasoned
political catalyst in
Dharmendra Rathore,
who is known to have an
acute political sense
and good understand-
ing of grass roots poli-
tics.
Together with their
zeal and coordinated ef-
forts in campaigning,
raising local issues, re-
vitalising the party
workers, thwarting op-
position's plans, well
thought out booth man-
agement and candidate
projection, the 'dynam-
ic duo' of Congress have
achieved a feat far
greater than any in the
recent political history
of the state. Interest-
ingly
, it is their hard
work that has ensured
that Congress garnered
30% more votes against
BJP
. When late Kailash
Trivedi had contested,
Congress had received
37% votes, but in the by-
polls, the party has bas
receivedawhopping58%
votes while its prime
competitor BJP could
gather only 28.14%.
While Raghu and
Rathore set out like
'warriors' to come out
victorious from the
'electoral chakravyuh',
but to break that
chakravyuh, it was the
much needed guidance
of State In-charge Ajay
Maken, who had prom-
ised the voters of being
provided with all the
developmental aspects
for their respective con-
stituencies. Maken had
even stayed at Sahada
and handled the cam-
paigning and strategy
first hand and as a re-
sult, he was in a better
position to gauge from
the beginning, that the
votes will swing in the
party's favour. Overall,
it will not be wrong to
say that Sahada's result
is due to the Good Gov-
ernance agenda of CM
Ashok Gehlot, which
these two sensible lead-
ers took to public in the
best manner possible.

First India Bureau
Jaipur: The Excise
Department has re-

circles. Till recently
165 excise circles
were approved in the
state, however now
18 of these excise cir-
cles have been re-
duced in restructur-

the Jagatpura circle
of Jaipur city as well
and after the reor-

147 circles will re-

Now, out of these 147,
135 Excise Circles
and 12 Construction

At the same time,
the inspectors of the
18 excise circles that
have been dissolved,
will be given new

Meanwhile, the
Additional Excise

“There is a lack of oxygen
in Rajasthan in propor-
tion to the number of co-

leaders have also admitted
that the state is not getting
enough oxygen from the
central government.”
Gehlot then went on to
ask senior BJP leaders to
speak with the Central
leadership. “I appeal to

Opposition, BJP State
President and all MPs of
the state to speak to the
Union Home Minister
Amit Shah, Health Min-
ister Harsh Vardhan,
Pharmaceutical Minis-

Gehlot tweeted, further
adding, “As everyone is

about the state’s situa-

crease the allocation of

BJP leaders may not go to

ation, but keep a strong
demand for the state by
meeting with Union min-

The senior politician
said that it is right time
to rise above political
agendas. “This is the
time to rise above poli-

that the Central and
State Governments work
together to fight against

family. Aarzoo who
is buxom, beautiful

the personality of a

When asked
about her jour-

Sangaria,

of Ra-

primary education with my
maternal grandparents. Af-
ter finishing my secondary
education from Sangaria, I
moved to Jaipur.” She fur-
ther added, “I was always a
bright student. Coming from
a conservative family, it was
inconceivable for me to think
of fashion and modelling as
my career. I have 52 members
in my family which is a lot to
deal with. Everyone opposed
and didn’t believe that one
can have a career in the fash-
ion industry. They still have
an orthodox mentality of
women meant to get married
and deal with household
chores. But I am a competi-
tive individual who is driven
and likes to win. My real
struggle began from there.
To my surprise, my father
was the first person to take a
stand for me. He believed in
me and gave me wings to fly
and follow my passion. Later
not just my parents but oth-
ers supported too. “
“When I came to Jaipur,
little did I know about fash-
ion and modelling industry. I
always used to question my-
self, What is this going to
look like? How am I going
to make it different?
Will I be able to do it?
Until in 2018, I
came across the
beauty pageants be-
ing held in Jaipur. I
met Gaurav Gaur, Direc-

after meeting him all my
questions got answered.
Gaurav Sir is my mentor
who not only believed in me
but helped me tap my poten-
tial. He showed me the right
path and guided me at every
step of my journey so far. I
can’t be more grateful to
him”, Aarzoo said.
When asked what advice
would she give someone

replied, “To the girls who
want to come into this in-

YOUR
DAY
Horoscope by
Saurabbh Sachdeva
have been doing a lot
of thinking. I have
been wondering why
this whole pandemic
has not scared the
c**p out of me like it
has other people.
It is all such an enigma.
No one can explain what is
happening. I bet you have
wondered if the corona is a
zoonotic virus or simply a
bigger government conspir-
acy
. No one predicted that
human beings would die in
large numbers. Or did they?
Is this nature getting back at
us?
And as a result of such
confusion, the government
and various other segments
have helped themselves to
our fear.
One such segment is the
Vegan movement, which
had almost hit a jackpot un-
til it didn’t. Initially, they
claimedthatweshouldclose
wet markets because corona
allegedly started in the wet
markets of China. Then
they claimed you must give
up animal products because
bats spread Covid. I want
you to read that again. Does
that perplex you as much as
it confuses me? Who in the
world eats bats? I don’t get
the connection. What I
haven’t told you yet, is that
behind it all is a business
empire booming. The NGOs
getbigbuckstoaggressively
push the vegan agenda and
many use animals to strike
a chord with our animal-
loving hearts. But some
things are amiss.
Iamavegetarian,butthat
post about the link between
bats and COVID does little if
anything at all to convince
me to be vegan. I under-
stand their motivation but
not the messaging. Instead,
they should focus on why
consuming animal products
is in the interest of human-
kind. Like everything else
that revolves around our
wellbeing, including the
One Health policy of the
WHO that claims human
health is directly inter-
linked to animal health (as-
sumingly related to con-
sumption only). See it is all
about us- our health and
wellbeing! Do you get the
sarcasm? If not let me break
it down for you.
Nowhere does the wellbe-
ing of animals and nature
come first except in the
heart of animal lovers. And
wait I feel the urge to define
this label. You do not classi-
fy as an “Animal Lover” be-
cause you purchased an ani-
mal, or discriminate
amongst breeds, or dictate
the terms on which your
home pet or your neigh-
bourhoodpethastolive.You
are an “animal lover” when
you love, care, and give un-
conditionally
, and when you
put them first! And I have
met quite a few animal lov-
ers during my time in
Jaipur and Pune.
Humans have coerced na-
ture to adapt to them when
it should be the other way
around. Man-un-kind has
brought nature to its knees.
Animals continue to suffer
unimaginable suffering at
the hands of human beings
for no fault of theirs. They
have been quite welcoming
of us in their habitat. And
what do we do, we become
occupiers much like the Is-
raeloccupationof Palestine.
Animals have been re-
duced to “nuisance” and
“vermin”and“man-eaters”.
I am very curious to know
what the animals think of
us. I hope I will be able to
find out when I complete my
animal communication and
energy healing training.
What a beautiful world it
would be if we could all
communicate with each
other and express how we-
creations of God-feel.
Wait, I am not done yet. I
also have had a lot of time to
imagine the post-corona
world, more like a utopia for
animals.
In my perfect world, Ani-
mal Birth Control (ABC)
will be decided by the ani-
mals themselves. Since they
will be free from fear of
harm at our hands, there
will be no need to coercively
spay or neuter them. Yes, I
am personally not in favour
of ABC, but I realize its im-
portance in the cruel socie-
ty that we live in and that
for their safety we must
“humanely” manage their
population. If humans hat-
ed the initiative taken by
our former PM Indira Gan-
dhi, where 6.2 million men
were sterilized in 1976
alone, what gives us the
right to sterilize animals?
How humane is forced Hu-
man Birth Control?
In my profession, I also
deal with a lot of vets and
veterinary students. It is
heartbreaking to hear from
so many of them that they
became a vet because they
did not score well for medi-
cal school. Read that again.
They did not become vets to
help animals or because
they love animals. Their
heart was in medical
school. How do you then ex-
pect them to save suffering
animals when they cannot
even feel for them? Animals
cannot speak a language we
understand. And so the role
of a veterinary doctor is far
more challenging than that
of a doctor treating hu-
mans. I salute vets who be-
came vets because that was
their first and only choice.
It is quite a twisted educa-
tional system in India that
allows you to pick medicine
as a profession but offers
veterinary medicine as an
option that is shoved down
your throat if you don’t
score well on the entrance
exam of the medical school.
This is such a disservice to
animals. In my utopia,
more vets will be compas-
sionate and will have the
welfare of the animal at
heart! In my utopia vets just
as human doctors will have
a choice.
And what is this about
cows being sacred in India?
Since when does something
sacred eat out of a garbage
dump? If I were a cow, I
wouldhatetobeworshipped
if it means I have to be a
scavenger. The vegans
would like what I am about
to say now- Ever witnessed
a cow’s postmortem? I have,
and I have seen its stomach
full of plastic, metal, broken
glass, and other sharp ob-
jects. In short, these are
things you throw out into
your garbage every day
which then find their way
on the street and into the
tummy of the cow. And wait
for it- into your chai and pa-
neer and ghee. Yes, this is
right, what do you expect of
the quality of milk from a
cow that feeds off your gar-
bage? The blood of this cow
that died and the thousands
of cows that die is on your
hands. In my utopia, gar-
bage will be segregated and
the streets will be clear and
the cows all happy like in
the Swiss Alps and the
LaughingCowinfocommer-
cials. In my utopia, nature
will prevail.
But I don’t live in Utopia.
I live in a man-made world.
If COVID is a way for nature
to catch up, then I hope it
does what it is here for. If
not, then I shall pray for my
nature-led utopia to take
root soon! Inshallah!

PERSPECTIVE TALK
Information as a Public Good
MITALI DUSAD
W
orld Press Free-
dom Day, cele-
brated on May 3
every year
serves as an occasion
to inform citizens of
the violations of
press freedom. It is a
reminder that publi-
cations and social
media are censored,
fined, suspended,
while journalists, ed-
itors and publishers
are harassed, at-
tacked and even
killed worldwide.
This year’s World
Press Freedom Day theme
‘Information as a Public
Good’ serves as a call to af-
firm the importance of
cherishing information as
a public good, and explor-
ing what can be done in
the production, distribu-
tion and reception of con-
tent to strengthen journal-
ism and to advance trans-
parency and empower-
ment while leaving no one
behind.
The importance of free-
ly accessing reliable infor-
mation, particularly
through journalism, has
been demonstrated by the
COVID-19 pandemic: in
times of crisis such as
this, information can be a
matter of life or death.
This has been especially
true in the face of
the COVID-19 ‘disin-
fodemic’, a mixture
of misinformation
and disinformation
that has spread
across the world
sowing confusion,
discord and divi-
sion. The lack of
publicly available
reliable data and in-
formation has cre-
ated a vacuum for
potentially harmful
content (including hate
speech) and misleading
conspiracy theories, most-
ly spread online through
Internet business models
and actors who exploit
these. cityfirst@firstindia.co.in

  • 2. BUT IN RAJ, BIRTHDAY BOY GEHLOT GIVES A SAVING GRACE TO THE PARTY Aditi Nagar here seldom comes a leader whose politics influences not just the party but an entire region, whose reach is far beyond his own terri- tory, into the hearts of the people of far away too and such a leader can only come when one is genuinely an altruistic person. Today, marks the seventieth year in the life of ‘Marwar’s Gandhi’ Ashok Ge- hlot and even as lakhs of people want to wish him on his birthday, the three time chief minister has decided not to celebrate it, as a mark of respect towards those who have been stung by the Corona virus and the havoc it is wreaking on Gehlot’s ‘pyaro’ Rajasthan. Handling the Corona situation is itself a tiresome job but amid all this, he has managed to give the Congress party, an ‘oasis’ in the sweltering ‘dry patch’ of electoral politics, where Con- gress has performed poorly in all the 4 states and 1 Un- ion Territory namely of West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry , whereas under Ge- hlot, Congress managed to win two bypolls even after political pandits claimed an anti-incumbency in the state. But what might seem to be a moment of cele- bration for several others, does not excite Ge- hlot. The reason: the stalwart considers saving people’s lives much more important than car- rying out political agendas in a crisis. And this is the reason that Gehlot on Sunday, once again called out the opposition parties and Central government to work ‘hand in hand’ in order to weed out corona from the state. The chief minister, just like during the first wave, has again asked the state BJP leaders to voice Rajasthan’s concerns before their bosses in Delhi and help the people, be- cause after all that is what Gehlot’s ‘dhar- ma’ is: Rajasthan, Rajasthan and Ra- jasthan. Even though down with the virus him- self, the Chief Minister is continuously fighting corona on two fronts i.e. outisde and inside, literally. Like the tenacious politician he is; it is sure that he will not give up on the state and has appealed to the people to help him, help them. And why does he take such pains for them? Not because he is represent- ing a political party, not merely be- cause he holds a constitutional office and definitely not because he wants to earn and make a name for himself; but because there is an underlying zeal for the state which in own words goes like this: “Main Thansu Door Koni”... Therefore, Happy Birthday Mr. CM! Blank for Left in Ben- gal: The Left’s fall in Bengal was a sharp one. It not only drew a blank in the 2019 national elections but lost its tra- ditional supporters to the BJP, as conceded by its own leaders. Matters came to such a pass that the 2021 assembly polls became a bipolar con- test between the BJP and the TMC, with the CPI(M), CPI and the Congress playing in the background. Turn to P6 Historic day for Left in Kerala, with 2nd term Stalin-led DMK bags big win in Tamil Nadu Chennai: The opposi- tion DMK-Congress al- liance is heading for a big win in the 234-mem- ber Tamil Nadu assem- bly. The DMK and its allies were leading in 150-plus seats. The rul- ing AIDMK – which started the day with a lead on 95 seats -- was leading in just 70-plus seats. The majority mark stands at 118. The DMK has not been in power in the state for a decade, Turn to P6 NDA TO FORM GOVT IN PUDUCHERRY NDA TO RETAIN POWER IN ASSAM Puducherry: The AINRC-led NDA looked all set to capture power in Puducherry by winning 16 assembly seats and leading in two when the results for 22 out of the total 30 segments were declared on Sunday. The Congress-led front emerged victorious in five constituencies. Guwahati: The ruling BJP-led NDA in Assam is all set to retain power and won 48 seats and was leading in 24 assembly seats. The BJP alone has won 35 and was leading in 22. Asom Gana Parishad won eight seat. The Grand Alliance led by the Congress has won 24 seats. Mohd Fahad/Aditi Nagar he Mamata Banerjee-led TMC pulled off a spectac- ular victory in a high- stakes electoral battle, trouncing BJP to form the government for a third consecutive term in West Bengal. As per the latest data from the Election Com- mission, TMC is on its course to win over 210 seats in a 294-member Assembly, while BJP is likely to win 74 seats. In Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin is set to become the state Chief Minister with the DMK-led alli- ance leading in at least 157 seats. In Kerala, the Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF government script- ed history by retaining power, the first time in four decades that the same grouping will form the government for the second consecu- tive time. For the BJP, Assam emerged as the lone bright spot with the ruling NDA pro- jected to win 75 of 126 seats to retain power in the state. However, Mamata lost the Nandigram seat to BJP leader Su- vendu Adhikari by 1,736 votes. Mamata said, “I will go to the court because I have heard there were some mal- practices”. Turn to P6 T PRASHANT KISHOR CALL IT QUITS New Delhi: Even as trends indicate that Trinamool Congress is likely to win big in the West Bengal Assem- bly elections, with the party leading in more than 200 seats, poll strategist Prashant Kishor said on Sunday that he is quitting as an election strategist. “I do not want to con- tinue what I am doing. I have done enough,” Kishor said. Gehlot reviewed the supply of oxygen, avail- ability of medicines, Covid infection and the Pandemic Turn to P6 Congress clinches Sahada, Sujangarh; BJP gets Rajsamand Jaipur: The Congress won the bypolls in Sahada and Sujan- garh and the BJP in Rajsamand, with both parties retaining the seats in Rajasthan that fell vacant after the death of their MLAs last year. Con- gress’ Gayatri Devi and Manoj Meghwal won in Sahada and Sujangarh while BJP’s Deepti Maheshwari retained seat of her mother Late Kiran Maheshwari. P5 13 Opposition leaders urge Centre to launch free mass vaccination drive New Delhi: Leaders of 13 Opposition parties Sunday urged the Cen- tre to launch a free mass vaccinationdriveacross the country in view of the unprecedented surge in Covid-19 cases. The ruling Congress re- tained Sahada and Su- jangarhwhileBJPsaved Rajsamand. Congress candidate Gayatri Devi, wife of late Congress MLA Kailash Trivedi, from Sahada recorded the biggest win by defeat- ing BJP’s Ratanlal Jat with 42,200 votes. BJP candidate Deepti Maheshwari, daughter of late Kiran Mahesh- wari, from Rajsamand won with the lowest margin of 5,310 votes by defeating Congress’ Tansukh Bohara. Congress candidate Manoj Meghwal, son of late Congress MLA and minister Master Bhan- warlalMeghwal, defeated BJPcandidateKhemram Ram Meghwal by 35,611 votes. Manoj has tested positive for corona on Sundayassuchhestayed atthehomeanddidnotgo to the counting centre. According to the Election Commission data, the Congress got the highest 51.04% votes in all three seats while BJP got 34.98% and oth- er parties including In- dependents got 12.44% votes. This time, nearly 1.55% voters pressed the NOTA button. SYMPATHY FACTOR! The sympathy wave ap- parently worked in all three seats as the parties had fielded kin of the de- ceasedMLAsfromallthe seats. There have been chargesof nepotismalso at the time of ticket allo- cation. This is also be- cause all the three candi- dateswerecontestingthe electionforthefirsttime. NEPOTISM MYTH BROKEN! The results have broken the state’s 56-year-old record and myth. In the by-elections held since 1965 in the state, no one had won if tickets were allocated to the kin of the deceased leaders. So far no party had benefit- ed from the sympathy card in the by-election, but this time the sympa- thy card has been suc- cessful in all three seats. PITLIYA FACTOR DAMAGES BJP In Sahada, the BJP has suffered huge loss due to the controversy over forcing BJP rebel Ladu- lal Pitliya to withdraw from the electoral fray. Viral audio of Pitliya’s refusal to let the BJP contest the elections caused damage to the BJP. At the same time, Gayatri Trivedi, wife of late MLA Kailash Trive- di, received a vote of sympathy . MAHARANA REMARK HAUNTS BJP In Rajsamand, the state- ment made on Mahara- na Pratap by Leader of Opposition Gulab Chand Kataria played a major role in swinging the votes. Party candi- date managed to win with the lowest margin of 5,310 votes. There was a direct contest be- tween Deepti and Con- gress’ Tansukh Bohara. RLP DENTS BJP IN SUJANGARH BJP’s credibility in Su- jangarh barely sur- vived. In several rounds of counting here, Hanu- man Beniwal’s RLP had defeated BJP and reached number two. However, later the BJP reached number two. RLP candidate Sitaram Nayak may not have won from the seat, but thepartymadedentinto BJP votes. Some proved to be suc- cessful and other re- mained unsuccessful. The Congress did not push the entire govern- ment into the elections but entrusted the re- sponsibility only to the prominent leaders. In the upcoming cabi- net expansion and po- litical appointments, the leaders who per- formed will be taken care of. The Congress was hopeful of victory in Sahada, where Health Minister Dr. Raghu Sharma and Congress leader Dhar- mendra Rathore had kept the front and emerged successful. He added, “In this victory, I am saying, I am quitting and I don’t want to do this any- more. I have to go back and see what I have to do.” Kishor also told that he was “quitting this space” and would not strategise for parties any more. Kishor also alleged that the Elec- tion Commission “has been working like an extension of BJP”. “From allowing use of religion by BJP to scheduling poll and bending rules, EC did everything to aid the saffron party,” he said. Back in December last year, Kishor had said that the BJP tally would struggle to cross double digits and he would quit if he was proven wrong. However, the post was deleted, and his Twitter account also became re- stricted. “Neither will I con- gratulate Mamata Ba- nerjee for her win in Bengal nor do I wish to say that I ‘respect’ the people’s verdict be- cause I sincerely think that peo- ple of Bengal made a his- toric mis- take by not g i v i n g Bharatiya Ja- nata Party a chance and by electing this c o r - rupt, incapable, dishon- est government and the cruel lady back to pow- er!! He also said that the Left has vanished from the state due to its wrong policies. Speaking to ANI, Hakim said, “I was always telling the press that Mamata Banerjee will be CM for the 3rd time. Red Alert - Mass Disci- pline Fortnight starting Monday through a vid- eo conference on Sun- day night. “Due to the increasing infection, the consumption of ox- ygen in the state is in- creasing rapidly. Since the central government is allocating oxygen un- der the National Plan, it is very important to in- crease the amount of allocation in view of Rajasthan’s needs. There has been an ad- ditional increase of 350 metric tonnes in the production capacity of oxygen at the Jamnagar plant. Therefore, Ra- jasthan should get allot- ment of extra oxygen from there,” Gehlot said. It was informed in the meeting that about 50 tankers are being im- ported by the Central Government through various companies. Ge- hlot said that the Gov- ernment of India has not provided sufficient number of tankers for oxygen lift, due to which there is a lot of problem regarding the transport of oxygen from remote places. He directed that the offi- cials should be given responsibility to ensure immediate lifting of the entire amount of oxy- gen allocated to the state under the Nation- al Plan. The Chief Minister instructed to purchase the oxygen concentra- tor at the earliest. He said that a committee of officials constituted for importing them from abroad should speed up the process so that patients can be treated. “The state govern- ment is working with all its efforts to provide better treatment to Cov- id patients, but public participation is equally necessary to break the chain of infection. If we can discipline our be- havior and ensure the implementation of the protocol, then we will be able to succeed to a great extent in fighting this challenge. In addi- tion to the permissible activities during the Pandemic Red Alert - Public Discipline Fort- night, no person should roam about aimlessly . If no one follows the pro- tocol then strict action will be taken,” Gehlot said and instructed that a flag march should be conducted on Monday for the cradle of the guideline. Medical and Health Minister Dr. Raghu Sharma said that the Medical and Health De- partment is engaged day and night for the management of Covid. “Our whole endeavor is to ensure proper utiliza- tion of available re- sources for the survival of the people of the state. The medical de- partment team is dis- charging its obligations with full commitment in this hour of crisis,” he said. MoS Medicine and Health, Dr. Subhash Garg said that keeping in view the upcoming challenges, efforts should be made to set up more and more oxy- gen plants in the state through the private sec- tor, so that we are ready to face any pandemic in future. Chief Secretary Niranjan Arya in- formed that intensive monitoring is being done through nodal of- ficers to increase the number of tankers and the quota of oxygen, complete lifting, early purchase of concentra- tor and oxygen produc- tion in Dariba and Chanderia. ‘POWER HOUSE’... Speaking to the press in Kolkata, Mamata said, “Covid is my first prior- ity . We will work on this immediately. We will not do a big oath-taking ceremony. We will weather this storm. We will distribute free vac- cines to everyone. Also request the Centre to distribute free vaccines to all. If this does not happen, I will sit on a dharna in front of the Gandhi Murti in Kolka- ta. The CPI(M) in a polit- buro statement said the results of the five as- sembly polls were a re- sounding defeat for the BJP , but shed very little light on its own losses. “BJP suffered a se- vere setback despite its money power and ma- nipulationsinWestBen- gal. People of Bengal have very clearly reject- ed the ideology of com- munal polarisation. “The performance of the Sanjukta Morcha and the Left has been very disappointing. Peo- ple’s urge to defeat the BJP led to a sharp po- larisation squeezing out the Sanjukta Morcha. A self-critical review of these results will be un- dertaken by the party to draw needed lessons,” it said. In the run-up to the assembly polls, the Left continued to cut a sorry figure in Bengal. Its vote share fell to 40 per cent in 2011 from 50 per cent in 2006. It plunged fur- ther to 26 per cent in the 2016 assembly polls. While questions and murmurs within party remained about partner- ing with the Congress, which had little or no presence on the ground in the state, senior lead- ers of the party weighed in and chose to ally with them. Many even ques- tioned the logic of part- nering with party which fails to even transfer votes to its allies. 13 Opposition... “In times of the uncon- trollable surge of the pandemic across our country, we call upon the Central government to focus all attention in ensuring the uninter- rupted flow of Oxygen supplies to all hospitals and health centres across the country,” they said in a joint state- ment. The unpredictability of life is what makes it a challenge and also beautiful and precious... we must savour every minute of it! —Jagdeesh Chandra, CEO & Editor-in-Chief, First India JAIPUR | MONDAY, MAY 3, 2021 www.firstindia.co.in I www.firstindia.co.in/epaper/ I twitter.com/thefirstindia I facebook.com/thefirstindia I instagram.com/thefirstindia 08 2NDFRONT POSTAL REG NO. JPC/010/2019-21 First India Bureau Jaipur: In what could be termed as a thump- ing victory, the Con- gress party has man- aged to regain its hold on Sahada assembly constituency in the by- polls. While thousands of Congress workers have put in their efforts in the constituency, but their efforts might have proved naught, had there not been an expe- rienced campaigner like Health Minister Dr Raghu Sharma at hand. Raghu had earlier proved his 'efficacy' in the Ramgarh by-polls, where he ensured vic- tory for his party and now when he was given the charge of Sahada by-polls, he has yet again proved his mettle. The Health Minister could achieve the 'mar- vellous feat' of a victory of over 42,000 votes in Congress's favour be- cause at his side, he al- ways had a seasoned political catalyst in Dharmendra Rathore, who is known to have an acute political sense and good understand- ing of grass roots poli- tics. Together with their zeal and coordinated ef- forts in campaigning, raising local issues, re- vitalising the party workers, thwarting op- position's plans, well thought out booth man- agement and candidate projection, the 'dynam- ic duo' of Congress have achieved a feat far greater than any in the recent political history of the state. Interest- ingly , it is their hard work that has ensured that Congress garnered 30% more votes against BJP . When late Kailash Trivedi had contested, Congress had received 37% votes, but in the by- polls, the party has bas receivedawhopping58% votes while its prime competitor BJP could gather only 28.14%. While Raghu and Rathore set out like 'warriors' to come out victorious from the 'electoral chakravyuh', but to break that chakravyuh, it was the much needed guidance of State In-charge Ajay Maken, who had prom- ised the voters of being provided with all the developmental aspects for their respective con- stituencies. Maken had even stayed at Sahada and handled the cam- paigning and strategy first hand and as a re- sult, he was in a better position to gauge from the beginning, that the votes will swing in the party's favour. Overall, it will not be wrong to say that Sahada's result is due to the Good Gov- ernance agenda of CM Ashok Gehlot, which these two sensible lead- ers took to public in the best manner possible. YOUR DAY Horoscope by Saurabbh Sachdeva have been doing a lot of thinking. I have been wondering why this whole pandemic has not scared the c**p out of me like it has other people. It is all such an enigma. No one can explain what is happening. I bet you have wondered if the corona is a zoonotic virus or simply a bigger government conspir- acy . No one predicted that human beings would die in large numbers. Or did they? Is this nature getting back at us? And as a result of such confusion, the government and various other segments have helped themselves to our fear. One such segment is the Vegan movement, which had almost hit a jackpot un- til it didn’t. Initially, they claimedthatweshouldclose wet markets because corona allegedly started in the wet markets of China. Then they claimed you must give up animal products because bats spread Covid. I want you to read that again. Does that perplex you as much as it confuses me? Who in the world eats bats? I don’t get the connection. What I haven’t told you yet, is that behind it all is a business empire booming. The NGOs getbigbuckstoaggressively push the vegan agenda and many use animals to strike a chord with our animal- loving hearts. But some things are amiss. Iamavegetarian, butthat post about the link between bats and COVID does little if anything at all to convince me to be vegan. I under- stand their motivation but not the messaging. Instead, they should focus on why consuming animal products is in the interest of human- kind. Like everything else that revolves around our wellbeing, including the One Health policy of the WHO that claims human health is directly inter- linked to animal health (as- sumingly related to con- sumption only). See it is all about us- our health and wellbeing! Do you get the sarcasm? If not let me break it down for you. Nowhere does the wellbe- ing of animals and nature come first except in the heart of animal lovers. And wait I feel the urge to define this label. You do not classi- fy as an “Animal Lover” be- cause you purchased an ani- mal, or discriminate amongst breeds, or dictate the terms on which your home pet or your neigh- bourhoodpethastolive. You are an “animal lover” when you love, care, and give un- conditionally , and when you put them first! And I have met quite a few animal lov- ers during my time in Jaipur and Pune. Humans have coerced na- ture to adapt to them when it should be the other way around. Man-un-kind has brought nature to its knees. Animals continue to suffer unimaginable suffering at the hands of human beings for no fault of theirs. They have been quite welcoming of us in their habitat. And what do we do, we become occupiers much like the Is- raeloccupationof Palestine. Animals have been re- duced to “nuisance” and “vermin”and“man-eaters”. I am very curious to know what the animals think of us. I hope I will be able to find out when I complete my animal communication and energy healing training. What a beautiful world it would be if we could all communicate with each other and express how we- creations of God-feel. Wait, I am not done yet. I also have had a lot of time to imagine the post-corona world, more like a utopia for animals. In my perfect world, Ani- mal Birth Control (ABC) will be decided by the ani- mals themselves. Since they will be free from fear of harm at our hands, there will be no need to coercively spay or neuter them. Yes, I am personally not in favour of ABC, but I realize its im- portance in the cruel socie- ty that we live in and that for their safety we must “humanely” manage their population. If humans hat- ed the initiative taken by our former PM Indira Gan- dhi, where 6.2 million men were sterilized in 1976 alone, what gives us the right to sterilize animals? How humane is forced Hu- man Birth Control? In my profession, I also deal with a lot of vets and veterinary students. It is heartbreaking to hear from so many of them that they became a vet because they did not score well for medi- cal school. Read that again. They did not become vets to help animals or because they love animals. Their heart was in medical school. How do you then ex- pect them to save suffering animals when they cannot even feel for them? Animals cannot speak a language we understand. And so the role of a veterinary doctor is far more challenging than that of a doctor treating hu- mans. I salute vets who be- came vets because that was their first and only choice. It is quite a twisted educa- tional system in India that allows you to pick medicine as a profession but offers veterinary medicine as an option that is shoved down your throat if you don’t score well on the entrance exam of the medical school. This is such a disservice to animals. In my utopia, more vets will be compas- sionate and will have the welfare of the animal at heart! In my utopia vets just as human doctors will have a choice. And what is this about cows being sacred in India? Since when does something sacred eat out of a garbage dump? If I were a cow, I wouldhatetobeworshipped if it means I have to be a scavenger. The vegans would like what I am about to say now- Ever witnessed a cow’s postmortem? I have, and I have seen its stomach full of plastic, metal, broken glass, and other sharp ob- jects. In short, these are things you throw out into your garbage every day which then find their way on the street and into the tummy of the cow. And wait for it- into your chai and pa- neer and ghee. Yes, this is right, what do you expect of the quality of milk from a cow that feeds off your gar- bage? The blood of this cow that died and the thousands of cows that die is on your hands. In my utopia, gar- bage will be segregated and the streets will be clear and the cows all happy like in the Swiss Alps and the LaughingCowinfocommer- cials. In my utopia, nature will prevail. But I don’t live in Utopia. I live in a man-made world. If COVID is a way for nature to catch up, then I hope it does what it is here for. If not, then I shall pray for my nature-led utopia to take root soon! Inshallah! help animals or because if it means I have to be a Have we earned COVID? MARIAM ABUHAIDERI thepersianladki@gmail.com I

It is a reminder that publi- cations and social media are censored, fined, suspended, while journalists, ed- itors and publishers are harassed, at- tacked and even killed worldwide. This year’s World Press Freedom Day theme ‘Information as a Public Good’ serves as a call to af- firm the importance of cherishing information as a public good, and explor- ing what can be done in the production, distribu- tion and reception of con- tent to strengthen journal- ism and to advance trans- parency and empower- ment while leaving no one behind. The importance of free- ly accessing reliable infor- mation, particularly through journalism, has been demonstrated by the COVID-19 pandemic: in times of crisis such as this, information can be a matter of life or death. This has been especially true in the face of the COVID-19 ‘disin- fodemic’, a mixture of misinformation and disinformation that has spread across the world sowing confusion, discord and divi- sion. The lack of publicly available reliable data and in- formation has cre- ated a vacuum for potentially harmful content (including hate speech) and misleading conspiracy theories, most- ly spread online through Internet business models and actors who exploit these. cityfirst@firstindia.co.in T During the Facebook live session Gulzar Husain Suranjan Das Karil Gaur Shahan Ansari Reena Tank Shahrukh Khan During the live session
