‘IRONMAN’AMITSHAH
TO‘POWER’JAIPURROADSTODAY!
Kartikey Dev Singh
the ‘D-Day’ of the first phase of Lok
Sabha polls in Rajasthan is coming
near, the Bharatiya Janata Party -
which with each passing day is upping
its campaigning momentum to ensure that its
main rival - Congress - is devoid of any seats this
time too, will now be carrying out yet another
‘political bombardment’ on its rivals as Union
Home Minister Amit Shah will carry out a mas-
sive roadshow on Monday evening in the Walled
City area of Jaipur.
The ‘Modern Chanakya’will hold the roadshow
for the first time in Jaipur covering a distance of
1.8 kilometers and taking a total time of 1 hour in
whichAdarsh Nagar, Kishanpole and Hawa Mahal
Assembly seats will be covered, while travelling
on a chariot-like vehicle from Sanganeri Gate at
around 5:30 PM. During this time, Chief Minister
Bhajan Lal Sharma and BJP’s Jaipur Lok Sabha
candidate Manju Sharma will accompany Shah on
the chariot.About 1,100 kg of flowers to be show-
ered as Shah’s roadshow passes the streets.
Through this roadshow, the complete focus
will be on Hawa Mahal, Kishanpole and Adarsh
NagarAssembly seats. Last time in theAssembly
elections, Bharatiya Janata Party had lost in Kis-
hanpole and Adarsh Nagar assemblies while BJP
won the Hawa Mahal assembly seat by just a few
votes. In such a situation, Amit Shah wants a big
lead on these 3 Assembly seats which are part of
Jaipur Lok Sabha from this roadshow.
The BJP is trying to score a hat-trick of victory
on the Jaipur seat. For this, the BJP has given its
full strength here. In the 2019 general elections,
BJP’s Ramcharan Bohra had won from Jaipur by
4,30,626 votes and this time too the BJP wants to
win with a big margin of votes. The Walled City
area of Jaipur has a good number of Brahmin vot-
ers and with CM Bhajan Lal having quickly de-
veloped a connection with the people of Jaipur at
the grassroots, his presence with Amit Shah in the
vehicle will only bolster Manju Sharma’s chances
at scoring big on these 3 seats from which the
roadshow will pass.

PRIYANKA GANDHI’S ACTIVE STATE VISIT & STAY
SPARKS SPECULATION AMONG RAJ POLITICOS
With Priyanka Gandhi staying for 2 days in
the State for election campaign, questions
are being asked in political circles if she will
be more active in the matters of the State even
after the elections. She had come with her mother
Sonia Gandhi in the Vidyadhar Nagar rally in Jaipur
recently and is seen more than Rahul Gandhi in
the State in recent days. It has also been talked in
political circles that Rahul Gandhi has come just
once in recent days.

become high
profile after
Congress gave a
ticket to Vaibhav Gehlot,
the son of former Chief
MinisterAshok Gehlot. In
front of Vaibhav, the BJP
has fielded ordinary work-
er Lumbaram Choudhary.

secutivevictoriesfromthis

and instead, Lumbaram
has been fielded. Apart
from being the district
president of BJP twice in
Sirohi,Lumbaramhasalso
been the head of the Pan-
chayat Samiti and a mem-
ber of the Zilla Parishad.
Coming from a farming
family, Lumbaram has
been associated with the
BJP and doing local-level
politics for a long time.
Meanwhile, this is the
second Lok Sabha elec-
tion of Congress candi-
date Vaibhav Gehlot, who
had last contested the
election from the Jodhpur
Lok Sabha seat against
Union Minister Gajendra
Singh Shekhawat but lost.
This time Vaibhav is try-
ing his luck from Jalore’s
seat. There are many
challenges before Vaib-
hav to contest strongly in
the midst of the Modi
wave and achieve victory.
To help Vaibhav over-
come these challenges,
Ashok Gehlot himself has
taken complete command
of his son’s election cam-
paign. Ashok Gehlot is
making regular election
tours in the entire parlia-
mentary constituency and
appealing to the voters to
bless Vaibhav.
Vaibhav is being pro-
moted as an outsider in
this area, although the
voters in this seat are very
fond of outside candi-
dates. Till now, external
candidates have become
MPs from this seat nine
times. Among them,
Sardar Buta Singh, who
was the Home Minister of
the country, became MP
from Jalore four times.
He won three times on the
Congress ticket and was
elected once as an inde-
pendent. Apart from this,
former national president
of the BJP, Bangaru Lax-
man, and his wife, Sushi-
la, who come from the
southern state, were also
MPs from here.
There are 12 candi-
dates on this seat, includ-
ing Otram of Bharat Adi-
vasi Party (BAP), but the
main contest is believed
to be between Vaibhav
Gehlot of Congress and
Lumbaram Chaudhary of
BJP. Talking about caste
equations, this seat of Ja-
lore-Sirohi districts is
dominated by Scheduled
Castes and Tribes and the
number of its voters is
more than 8 lakh. In the
general category, Kalbi
(Patel) is 3 lakh, Devas
are 2.10 lakh, Rajput and
Bhomia are 1.5 lakh, oth-
er upper castes, including
Brahmin and Vaishya, are
3.20 lakh, and about 90
thousand voters are from
the Muslim community.
T
MAHI WATER FOR IRRIGATION AND DRY PORT
ARE BIG ELECTION ISSUES IN JALORE
This time many issues are dominating Jalore seat,
among which the important ones are bringing Mahi
water to the farmers for irrigation, raising the issues of
farmers’ interest prominently with the Central Government
and providing compensation to the farmers at the appropri-
ate time. The area currently needs many new development
projects. The issue of expansion of railways and connect-
ing Sanchore with train facilities is also important. The
effort to build a dry port in the Nehar area was started but
after some time it was put on hold, for which people have
great expectations from the new MP.
MP DEVJI PATEL’S REPORT CARD
In the last five years, during the tenure of current
MP Devji Patel, many schemes of the Central Gov-
ernment including Medical College were brought
in Sirohi. Development works were done but many big
development projects are still incomplete, due to which this
time the winning MP is expected to bring big projects from
the Central Government to the parliamentary constituency.

A massive fire broke out

happened at around 6.15

Amrita Duhan said.
According to initial in-

in an electric transformer
installed on the ground

fire, the police said. The
forensic team, however, is
trying to ascertain the ex-

tel building was not
equipped with fire safety

that it’s alarming that the
transformer was installed

The police said the six in-
jured students, including

She then lost con-

STOCK MARKET ANALYSIS
DOLLAR’S WEAKNESS WILL HAVE AN IMPACT
ven though BSE
and NSE indi-
ces may have
managed to reach their
highest peak last week,
this level of the indices
could not be maintained
even for a day. It can be
said that it is unfortunate
for Nifty that in a single
day, Nifty took a dive of
256 points from its high-
est level. Along with the
rise in the stock market,
there was a bullish trend
in the currency market
last week and the dollar
increased by 14 paise
against the Indian Rupee
to the level of Rs 83.42,
which is a matter of con-
cern for our economy
which is largely depend-
ent on imports and the
market. But it can also be
seen as having far reach-
ing effects. Traders say
that the rupee-dollar val-
ue could also be a reason
behind the continuous
selling by foreign institu-
tional investors and the
further increase in selling
last week. The increase in
crude oil prices, increas-
ing international tension
and increase in gold and
silver prices can be con-
sidered as obstacles to the
rise in the stock market,
but in the week starting
on Monday, it is certain
that the impact of the an-
nual results being an-
nounced by Indian com-
panies will definitely be
visible on the stock mar-
ket and indices.
The boom that started
in the new financial year
in the Indian stock mar-
kets has now turned into
stability.According to the
data, last week the BSE
index fell by 3.32 points
and closed at 74244.90,
while the NSE Nifty in-
dex rose by only 5.70
points and closed at
22519.40. The special
thing was that there was a
contradiction between the
midcap and smallcap in-
dices and the basic index
and in contrast to the sta-
bility of the basic index,
there was a rise in them,
which is pointing towards
the future of both these
sectors. Talking about the
bullion market, this week
the prices of gold im-
proved by Rs 1700 per 10
grams, while the prices of
silver increased by Rs
2100 per kg and the price
of gold increased from Rs
72,600 per ten grams to
Rs 74,300 per ten grams
and silver increased from
Rs 82,600 per kg to Rs
84,700 per kg. Traders
say that international ten-
sion is a major reason be-
hind the ongoing im-
provement in bullion
business, but this boom
has badly affected the
customer base.
Regarding the market
trend this week, traders
say that due to interna-
tional tension this week,
there is little possibility of
improvement in the stock
market. In such a situa-
tion, investors should be
cautious. This week, the
results of companies like
Bajaj Auto, Infosys, ICI-
CI, Hindustan Zinc,
HDFC Bank, CRISILetc.
will be announced. There
will be natural ups and
downs in the market de-
pendingontheannounced
performance and expecta-
tions of the companies
and in case of decline,
investors should look for
the opportunity to invest
in such companies. Ac-
cording to the choice of
businessmen, Steel Au-
thority of India, BHEL,
Zomato,TCS, Coal India,
HFCL, Yash Bank etc.
can be considered as safe
investments from the
point of view of new in-
vestment. This week, the
country’s biggest IPO till
date,Vodafone Idea’s IPO
worth Rs 10 to 11, will be
issued in the main board
between April 18 & 22 to
raise Rs 18,000 crores.
(This is the personal opin-
ion of the author. The author,
his family members and ac-
quaintances may have in-
vestments in the companies
mentioned in the article.)

lose to mid-
night on
April 13,
hundreds of
m i l i t a r y
drones were launched from
both Iran and Iraq toward
Israel. Subsequently, sev-
eral waves of ballistic mis-
siles, cruise missiles and
rockets followed, originat-
ing from Iran, Iraq, Yemen
and Lebanon – all directed
at Israel.
This unprecedented
multi-front attack on Israel
constitutes a de facto dec-
laration of war and marks
the first direct assault
against Israel from Iranian
soil. However, despite the
scale of the operation, it
appears to be a tactical fail-
ure.
If Iran wanted to test Is-
rael’s ability to deal with a
multi-front aerial assault,
than the Israeli score is al-
most a perfect 100. Ac-
cording to the Israel De-
fence Forces (IDF), 99%
of the more than 330 weap-
ons fired at Israel (at least
185 drones, 110 surface-
to-surface missiles and 36
cruise missiles) were inter-
cepted mostly over other
countries. Only minor
damage occurred at the
Nevatim Airbase (near
Be’er Sheva in the south).
A 7-year-old girl was seri-
ously injured by shrapnel,
possibly from an intercept-
ing unit.
WHY IRAN FELT IT HAD
TO ACT
The attack was a direct re-
sponse to the killing of Ira-
nian General Mohammad
Reza Zahedi (also known
as Hassan Mahdawi) in Is-
raeli airstrikes on April 1.
Zahedi, a senior com-
mander in the Iranian Is-
lamic Revolutionary
Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds
Force in Syria and Leba-
non, was allegedly respon-
sible for terror attacks
against Israel and the arm-
ing of Iranian proxies in
the region. His death oc-
curred while he was in a
building adjacent to Iran’s
consulate in Damascus – a
location the Iranians
claimed is protected by in-
ternational law.
This incident represents
a tipping point. The regime
in Tehran, incensed by Za-
hedi’s death, vowed strong
retaliation against Israel.
In Tehran’s collective
memory, Israel’s history of
attacks includes numerous
strikes on Iranian nuclear
sites, assassinations of sci-
entists within Iran, and ac-
tions against Iranian prox-
ies in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq
and Yemen.
Despite these provoca-
tions, Iran’s counter-strikes
against Israel have been so
far minimal or insignifi-
cant. Iran’s response to the
US assassination of Irani-
an general Qassem Soleim-
ani in 2020, for instance,
was feeble.
Due to the pressure the
extremist leadership in
Tehran is facing, it evi-
dently felt it could no long-
er ignore such insults. The
regime is increasingly con-
cerned about its own sta-
bility, grappling with a
failing economy battered
by decades of sanctions.
BOTH SIDES WOULD
RATHER AVOID A WAR
Israeli officials were quick
to promise a robust re-
sponse to the attack. The
government cannot toler-
ate another blatant in-
fringement on Israel’s sov-
ereignty, reminiscent of
what Hamas tragically
achieved in its October 7
attacks.
Israel has an array of re-
taliation options, including
cyberattacks, long-range
missile strikes on Iranian
soil, aerial operations us-
ing jets and drones, and
covert operations.
A strong action would
be crucial to sending a
powerful message to Iran
and the broader region:
“Don’t mess with us.” De-
spite Iranian officials’des-
perate attempts to contain
the situation, declaring the
score with Israel is settled,
Israel’s response is expect-
ed to be severe, as its Mid-
dle Eastern allies antici-
pate, and maybe even
hope for.

expanded to cover every citizen over the age of 70.
The promise addresses a big problem concerning the
elderly in view of the rising treatment costs.
The Modi government’s delivery of promises
made in 2014 and 2019 was high which made the
beneficiaries support the BJP. Given the mood in the
country post the consecration of Lord Ram’s statue
in Ayodhya and Article 370’s abrogation, voters

B
ran’s drone and missile attack on Israel has
stirred concerns about its implications for

The attack, deemed largely ineffective by Tel Aviv
due to the successful interception of 99 percent of

derscores the escalating tensions in the region. The
US and Jordan also brought down some projectiles.
The potential fallout of Israeli retaliation looms

n a compelling book
discussion held at
Ashok Club, Jaipur
on Sunday, Jagdeep
Singh shed light on the pre-
planned nature of the Jallian-
wala Bagh massacre, as out-
lined in Kishwar Desai's book
'Jallianwala Bagh, 1919 - The
Real Story'. The event, organ-
ised by Pick a Book (PAB)
Jaipur, delved into the grim de-
tails surrounding the massacre
that occurred onApril 13, 1919,
in Amritsar. General Reginald
Dyer's orchestrated violence
aimed to quell Indian resistance
against British rule, triggered
by the arrest of Dr Saifuddin
Kitchlew and Dr Satya Pal.
Over 2500 unarmed individuals
gathered at Jallianwala Bagh,
resulting in over 1000 deaths
after Dyer's soldiers fired 1650
rounds in just 10 minutes. The
presentation highlighted the
global condemnation of the
massacre, sparking renewed
vigour in India's Freedom
Struggle led by Mahatma Gan-
dhi. Despite international out-
rage, British authorities failed
to hold Dyer accountable,
sparking further unrest and
eventually leading to the assas-
sination of Lieutenant Gover-
nor Michael O'Dwyer by Ud-
ham Singh in London twenty
years later.

  • 1. Jaipur, Monday | April 15, 2024 firstindia.co.in firstindia.co.in/epapers/jaipur thefirstindia thefirstindia thefirstindia Rajasthan’s Own English Newspaper ‘IRONMAN’AMITSHAH TO‘POWER’JAIPURROADSTODAY! Kartikey Dev Singh the ‘D-Day’ of the first phase of Lok Sabha polls in Rajasthan is coming near, the Bharatiya Janata Party - which with each passing day is upping its campaigning momentum to ensure that its main rival - Congress - is devoid of any seats this time too, will now be carrying out yet another ‘political bombardment’ on its rivals as Union Home Minister Amit Shah will carry out a mas- sive roadshow on Monday evening in the Walled City area of Jaipur. The ‘Modern Chanakya’will hold the roadshow for the first time in Jaipur covering a distance of 1.8 kilometers and taking a total time of 1 hour in whichAdarsh Nagar, Kishanpole and Hawa Mahal Assembly seats will be covered, while travelling on a chariot-like vehicle from Sanganeri Gate at around 5:30 PM. During this time, Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma and BJP’s Jaipur Lok Sabha candidate Manju Sharma will accompany Shah on the chariot.About 1,100 kg of flowers to be show- ered as Shah’s roadshow passes the streets. Through this roadshow, the complete focus will be on Hawa Mahal, Kishanpole and Adarsh NagarAssembly seats. Last time in theAssembly elections, Bharatiya Janata Party had lost in Kis- hanpole and Adarsh Nagar assemblies while BJP won the Hawa Mahal assembly seat by just a few votes. In such a situation, Amit Shah wants a big lead on these 3 Assembly seats which are part of Jaipur Lok Sabha from this roadshow. The BJP is trying to score a hat-trick of victory on the Jaipur seat. For this, the BJP has given its full strength here. In the 2019 general elections, BJP’s Ramcharan Bohra had won from Jaipur by 4,30,626 votes and this time too the BJP wants to win with a big margin of votes. The Walled City area of Jaipur has a good number of Brahmin vot- ers and with CM Bhajan Lal having quickly de- veloped a connection with the people of Jaipur at the grassroots, his presence with Amit Shah in the vehicle will only bolster Manju Sharma’s chances at scoring big on these 3 seats from which the roadshow will pass. Apart from being the district president of BJP twice in Sirohi,Lumbaramhasalso been the head of the Pan- chayat Samiti and a mem- ber of the Zilla Parishad. Coming from a farming family, Lumbaram has been associated with the BJP and doing local-level politics for a long time. Meanwhile, this is the second Lok Sabha elec- tion of Congress candi- date Vaibhav Gehlot, who had last contested the election from the Jodhpur Lok Sabha seat against Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat but lost. This time Vaibhav is try- ing his luck from Jalore’s seat. There are many challenges before Vaib- hav to contest strongly in the midst of the Modi wave and achieve victory. To help Vaibhav over- come these challenges, Ashok Gehlot himself has taken complete command of his son’s election cam- paign. Ashok Gehlot is making regular election tours in the entire parlia- mentary constituency and appealing to the voters to bless Vaibhav. Vaibhav is being pro- moted as an outsider in this area, although the voters in this seat are very fond of outside candi- dates. Till now, external candidates have become MPs from this seat nine times. Among them, Sardar Buta Singh, who was the Home Minister of the country, became MP from Jalore four times. He won three times on the Congress ticket and was elected once as an inde- pendent. Apart from this, former national president of the BJP, Bangaru Lax- man, and his wife, Sushi- la, who come from the southern state, were also MPs from here. There are 12 candi- dates on this seat, includ- ing Otram of Bharat Adi- vasi Party (BAP), but the main contest is believed to be between Vaibhav Gehlot of Congress and Lumbaram Chaudhary of BJP. Talking about caste equations, this seat of Ja- lore-Sirohi districts is dominated by Scheduled Castes and Tribes and the number of its voters is more than 8 lakh. In the general category, Kalbi (Patel) is 3 lakh, Devas are 2.10 lakh, Rajput and Bhomia are 1.5 lakh, oth- er upper castes, including Brahmin and Vaishya, are 3.20 lakh, and about 90 thousand voters are from the Muslim community. T MAHI WATER FOR IRRIGATION AND DRY PORT ARE BIG ELECTION ISSUES IN JALORE This time many issues are dominating Jalore seat, among which the important ones are bringing Mahi water to the farmers for irrigation, raising the issues of farmers’ interest prominently with the Central Government and providing compensation to the farmers at the appropri- ate time. The area currently needs many new development projects. The issue of expansion of railways and connect- ing Sanchore with train facilities is also important. The effort to build a dry port in the Nehar area was started but after some time it was put on hold, for which people have great expectations from the new MP. MP DEVJI PATEL’S REPORT CARD In the last five years, during the tenure of current MP Devji Patel, many schemes of the Central Gov- ernment including Medical College were brought in Sirohi. Development works were done but many big development projects are still incomplete, due to which this time the winning MP is expected to bring big projects from the Central Government to the parliamentary constituency. It neither presents a true re- portcardofBJP’s10years of governance nor does it provide any vision. Meanwhile, BJP’s state president CP Joshi stated that the BJP’s Lok Sabha Election 2024 manifesto, prepared with suggestions from the common people, is a guarantee of develop- ment for every section of society. He emphasized that this manifesto will prove to be a milestone. Cong leader Sachin Pi- lot expressed that BJP’s manifesto completely ne- glects issues concerning the nation and people. • 6. INDIA 05 Jaipur, Monday | April 15, 2024 www.firstindia.co.in firstindia.co.in/epapers/jaipur thefirstindia thefirstindia thefirstindia STOCK MARKET ANALYSIS DOLLAR’S WEAKNESS WILL HAVE AN IMPACT ven though BSE and NSE indi- ces may have managed to reach their highest peak last week, this level of the indices could not be maintained even for a day. It can be said that it is unfortunate for Nifty that in a single day, Nifty took a dive of 256 points from its high- est level. Along with the rise in the stock market, there was a bullish trend in the currency market last week and the dollar increased by 14 paise against the Indian Rupee to the level of Rs 83.42, which is a matter of con- cern for our economy which is largely depend- ent on imports and the market. But it can also be seen as having far reach- ing effects. Traders say that the rupee-dollar val- ue could also be a reason behind the continuous selling by foreign institu- tional investors and the further increase in selling last week. The increase in crude oil prices, increas- ing international tension and increase in gold and silver prices can be con- sidered as obstacles to the rise in the stock market, but in the week starting on Monday, it is certain that the impact of the an- nual results being an- nounced by Indian com- panies will definitely be visible on the stock mar- ket and indices. The boom that started in the new financial year in the Indian stock mar- kets has now turned into stability.According to the data, last week the BSE index fell by 3.32 points and closed at 74244.90, while the NSE Nifty in- dex rose by only 5.70 points and closed at 22519.40. The special thing was that there was a contradiction between the midcap and smallcap in- dices and the basic index and in contrast to the sta- bility of the basic index, there was a rise in them, which is pointing towards the future of both these sectors. Talking about the bullion market, this week the prices of gold im- proved by Rs 1700 per 10 grams, while the prices of silver increased by Rs 2100 per kg and the price of gold increased from Rs 72,600 per ten grams to Rs 74,300 per ten grams and silver increased from Rs 82,600 per kg to Rs 84,700 per kg. Traders say that international ten- sion is a major reason be- hind the ongoing im- provement in bullion business, but this boom has badly affected the customer base. Regarding the market trend this week, traders say that due to interna- tional tension this week, there is little possibility of improvement in the stock market. In such a situa- tion, investors should be cautious. This week, the results of companies like Bajaj Auto, Infosys, ICI- CI, Hindustan Zinc, HDFC Bank, CRISILetc. will be announced. There will be natural ups and downs in the market de- pendingontheannounced performance and expecta- tions of the companies and in case of decline, investors should look for the opportunity to invest in such companies. Ac- cording to the choice of businessmen, Steel Au- thority of India, BHEL, Zomato,TCS, Coal India, HFCL, Yash Bank etc. can be considered as safe investments from the point of view of new in- vestment. This week, the country’s biggest IPO till date,Vodafone Idea’s IPO worth Rs 10 to 11, will be issued in the main board between April 18 & 22 to raise Rs 18,000 crores. • 7. lose to mid- night on April 13, hundreds of m i l i t a r y drones were launched from both Iran and Iraq toward Israel. Subsequently, sev- eral waves of ballistic mis- siles, cruise missiles and rockets followed, originat- ing from Iran, Iraq, Yemen and Lebanon – all directed at Israel. This unprecedented multi-front attack on Israel constitutes a de facto dec- laration of war and marks the first direct assault against Israel from Iranian soil. However, despite the scale of the operation, it appears to be a tactical fail- ure. If Iran wanted to test Is- rael’s ability to deal with a multi-front aerial assault, than the Israeli score is al- most a perfect 100. Ac- cording to the Israel De- fence Forces (IDF), 99% of the more than 330 weap- ons fired at Israel (at least 185 drones, 110 surface- to-surface missiles and 36 cruise missiles) were inter- cepted mostly over other countries. Only minor damage occurred at the Nevatim Airbase (near Be’er Sheva in the south). A 7-year-old girl was seri- ously injured by shrapnel, possibly from an intercept- ing unit. WHY IRAN FELT IT HAD TO ACT The attack was a direct re- sponse to the killing of Ira- nian General Mohammad Reza Zahedi (also known as Hassan Mahdawi) in Is- raeli airstrikes on April 1. Zahedi, a senior com- mander in the Iranian Is- lamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force in Syria and Leba- non, was allegedly respon- sible for terror attacks against Israel and the arm- ing of Iranian proxies in the region. His death oc- curred while he was in a building adjacent to Iran’s consulate in Damascus – a location the Iranians claimed is protected by in- ternational law. This incident represents a tipping point. The regime in Tehran, incensed by Za- hedi’s death, vowed strong retaliation against Israel. In Tehran’s collective memory, Israel’s history of attacks includes numerous strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, assassinations of sci- entists within Iran, and ac- tions against Iranian prox- ies in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and Yemen. Despite these provoca- tions, Iran’s counter-strikes against Israel have been so far minimal or insignifi- cant. Iran’s response to the US assassination of Irani- an general Qassem Soleim- ani in 2020, for instance, was feeble. Due to the pressure the extremist leadership in Tehran is facing, it evi- dently felt it could no long- er ignore such insults. The regime is increasingly con- cerned about its own sta- bility, grappling with a failing economy battered by decades of sanctions. BOTH SIDES WOULD RATHER AVOID A WAR Israeli officials were quick to promise a robust re- sponse to the attack. The government cannot toler- ate another blatant in- fringement on Israel’s sov- ereignty, reminiscent of what Hamas tragically achieved in its October 7 attacks. Israel has an array of re- taliation options, including cyberattacks, long-range missile strikes on Iranian soil, aerial operations us- ing jets and drones, and covert operations. A strong action would be crucial to sending a powerful message to Iran and the broader region: “Don’t mess with us.” De- spite Iranian officials’des- perate attempts to contain the situation, declaring the score with Israel is settled, Israel’s response is expect- ed to be severe, as its Mid- dle Eastern allies antici- pate, and maybe even hope for. BHAGAVAD GITA BIDEN DOUBTS NETANYAHU In addition, Biden report- edly does not trust Netan- yahu’s judgement. Wash- ington does not believe Israel was fully transparent with the US on its opera- tional plans in Gaza and the killing of the Iranian general this month. Too many Palestinian civilian deaths are also creating a moral and political problem for Biden’s re-election campaign. Biden promptly contacted the Israeli PM when this weekend’s attack began, cautioning against an Israeli counterattack. The upcoming days will be crucial – a test of the inter- national community’s ability to stabilise the tormented Middle East. Unfortunately, the signs at the moment are not encouraging. Close to midnight on April 13, hundreds of military drones were launched from both Iran and Iraq toward Israel. Subsequently, several waves of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and rockets followed, originating from Iran, Iraq, Yemen and Lebanon – all directed at Israel IN-DEPTH ASANKALPPATRAFORTHE PEOPLEANDFORNATION IRAN STRIKES, ISRAEL PONDERS MOVE haratiya Janata Party has stuck to its earlier promises on UCC, CAA, continuation of free ration for 80 crore people in the party’s Sankalp Patra (manifesto) for the Lok Sabha poll, which the majority community, farmers, poor, youth and women will find pleasing, with the overarching theme being “Modi kee Guarantee: Viksit Bharat 2047”. Also part of the promise is One Nation, One Election and Common Electoral Roll. Ayushman Bharat Yojna, the Rs 5-crore health insurance will be expanded to cover every citizen over the age of 70. The promise addresses a big problem concerning the elderly in view of the rising treatment costs. The Modi government’s delivery of promises made in 2014 and 2019 was high which made the beneficiaries support the BJP. Given the mood in the country post the consecration of Lord Ram’s statue in Ayodhya and Article 370’s abrogation, voters would find the party dependable compared to the Congress which is facing an existential challenge. B ran’s drone and missile attack on Israel has stirred concerns about its implications for both regional stability and the global econ- omy. Despite being urged by the US to refrain from retaliation, Israel finds itself at a critical juncture. The attack, deemed largely ineffective by Tel Aviv due to the successful interception of 99 percent of the projectiles by its Iron Dome defence system, un- derscores the escalating tensions in the region. The US and Jordan also brought down some projectiles. The potential fallout of Israeli retaliation looms large, with fears of further escalation and destabiliza- tion. Such actions could have profound repercussions not only for regional se- curity but also for the fragile global econo- my.Any escalation of conflict in the West Asia risks disrupting vital trade routes and energy supplies, sending shockwaves through global mar- kets already grap- pling with volatility. Iran itself has a high inflation rate of 40 percent and a war will hurt its economy just as much. Moreover, Israel’s history of occasion- ally disregarding US advice, as evidenced during the recent Gaza offensive, adds an addition- al layer of uncertainty to the situation. The delicate balance of power in the region hangs in the balance, with the potential for further violence threatening to derail diplomatic efforts aimed at fostering peace. As tensions simmer the international community watches closely, fearing oil and gold prices to zoom, but mindful of the need for restraint and de-escala- tion. In this precarious moment, prudent diplomacy and a commitment to dialogue are paramount to preventing a full-blown crisis that could have far- reaching consequences for both regional stability and the global economy.
