Holding an Open VC, Gehlot gave a subtle ‘dressing down’ to Princi-

details are to be presented but did you not understand what I asked
for? If you do not provide district wise data, then how will we come
to know.” Gehlot said this when Kumar was presenting the data in a
table format. While the meeting was for farmers, Kumar brought the
data in English which the farmers could not unerstand and therefore
Gehlot registered his discontent. Moreover, presentation give by
Bhaskar Sawant was also comparatively weak. While the officials
kept weaving a web of data, the farmers could not understand one bit
and therefore the purpose of the VC was destroyed.

ndia is celebrating the 22nd
Kargil Vijay Diwas, the day re-
membered for the Indian Ar-
my’s successful Operation Vi-
jay and the fourth consecutive
defeat of the Pakistan army
against India. Indian Army
fought this battle in extreme
weather conditions, snow-cov-
eredpeaks,ruggedandbarren
mountains, and glaciers. Indi-
an armed forces displayed the
extraordinary valour and top-
class warfare to recapture the
Indian territory
, infiltrated by
the Pak army when both sides
abandoned the front line posts
during the grinding cold win-
ters when temperatures
plunged. Officers and soldiers
of the Indian Army fought
hard on Tololing, Tiger Hill
and several other peaks where
the Pak army had fortified
their positions with bunkers
and heavy weapons.
The man behind this Pak
army’s misadventure was its
chief of army staff, General
Parvez Musharaff, responsi-
ble for many lives across the
line and jeopardising the
peace between two states.
In February 1999, the then
Indian PM, A.B Vajpayee,
went to Lahore in a bus with
the hope that joint efforts of
Sharif and Vajpayee would
lay a foundation of new Indo-
Pak relations. By then, Paki-
stani troops had captured
around 140 Indian posts in
Kargil, and our government
and Army did not have a clue
about it. We were engaged in
the peace process and were
putting our efforts to im-
prove good relations between
both countries; simultane-
ously, the Pakistan army es-
tablishment was planning its
most extensive operation af-
ter 1971 against India.
Pakistan Prime Minister
Nawaz Sharif was singing the

ership of General Pervez
Musharraf, was pulling up
socks for the execution of an
already planned operation of
alteringtheLOCandintrusion
of the Pakistan Army across
the LOC to occupy the strate-
gic Indian heights and areas.
Neither the Pakistan Army
nor its chief, Pervez Mushar-
raf, were interested in the La-
hore Summit. Later, he reject-
ed the Lahore process, stating
it did not address the central
issue of Kashmir.
As mentioned by the Kargil

RAW Inputs may not be entire-

the proposed thaw in Indo-Pak

position of strength. Reports

eign secretary

,

of IB, but ignored. After a few
years, Pervez Musharraf him-
self proved the inputs correct
and said that he saw Lahore
Summitasawasteof timeand
was never in favour of it. ‘I do
not see it (Lahore process) as a
low or even a high point be-
cause the Lahore Summit was
not addressing the main issue.
Itisjustaprocess,whichwould
neverhavecarriedforwardthe
dialogueinaconcretemanner,’
hesaidinaninterviewwithan
Indian journalist.
Musharaff was also very
much frustrated by the out-
come of Pakistan’s proxy war
in Kashmir, which was more
or less nothing. He said every-
onemustrealisethattheKash-
mir problem was the primary
source of tension between In-
diaandPakistan,forwhichthe
twocountrieshadfoughtwars.
‘
Anybody who thinks that Pa-
kistan and India can get very
chummy
, friendly
, and cooper-
ate without a solution to the
Kashmir issue is not a practi-
cal and realistic individual.”
Musharraf even suggested
to the Pakistan Government
to include Kashmir in the fi-
nal draft of the Lahore Sum-
mit. The ultimate draft gave
the impression that Kashmir
was a minor irritant between
the two countries, and there
were many other big issues
among them.
Like most members of the
Pakistani military establish-
ment, Musharraf was ada-
mantandagainstnormalising
the relations with India. One
cannot forget that he chose to
absent himself from the wel-
coming ceremony for Vajpay-
ee at the Wagah border. It is no
secretinIslamabadthathedid
so because he did not want to
salute the Prime Minister of a
neighbouring country that he
regarded as an ‘enemy’.
It is now evident that even
as the Lahore declaration
was executed between Prime
Ministers Atal Behari Vaj-
payee and Nawaz Sharif,
preparations for the intru-
sions by Pakistani troops
were in full swing. One more
example of Pakistan Army
leadership is entirely un-
trustworthy for pursuing
peace process or dialogue be-
tween the two countries.
Gen Pervez Musharraf had
long-standing links with anti-
India religious fundamental-
ist groups in Pakistan. In
1987, Parvez got promoted to
the rank of brigadier. In Sep-
tember 1987, an assault was
launchedunderthecommand
of Brig Pervez on Bilafond La
to capture the heights of
Siachen. His attempt was
beaten back severely by the
Indian Army, causing Paki-
stan to lose over 300 soldiers.
Later in 1998, Musharaff be-
came the General of the Paki-
stan Army
. After being defeat-
ed so many times by the In-
dian Army
, Siachen remained
Musharaff’s top priority
.
What he could not achieve
twelve years before, now he
had the opportunity and com-
plete authority to make a plan
to snatch Siachen from India
through Kargil.
Moreover, Musharraf has
nurturedthisideafrom1988to
1989. It is a fact that the Paki-
stani military was engaged in
preparations for Kargil even
beforethetwoprimeministers
met in Lahore. The newfound
nuclear status of Pakistan is
likelytohavefuelledthedesire
to make sub-conventional
gains in Kashmir. Also, the
string of Siachen is still pain-
ing deep inside, and all efforts
of takingrevengeweresevere-
ly beaten back by the Indian
Army
. As Benazir Bhutto said
in her electronic media inter-
view,’ There has always been a
plan of the Pakistan Army to
do something, which could
have retrieved us what we lost
in Siachen.’ She refused the
plan when it was put to her by
the Pakistan Army because
she was aware of its destruc-
tive results and consequences.
According to Brigadier
Shaukat Qadir of Pak army,
‘In 1998–99, there was a grow-
ing concern in the Pakistan
establishment that the Kash-
miri cause was losing its in-
ternational salience and the
waning militancy in Jammu
and Kashmir needed a reju-
venation. Under the garb of
a Mujahideen operation, the
military operation would cre-
ate a military threat that
could lead it to a military so-
lution and force India to the
negotiating table from a Pa-
kistan of weakness.’

WILL CONGRESS PART
WAYS FROM NCP?
Anita Hada
New Delhi: The Con-

shocked by the state-
ments that Maharash-
tra Congress state pres-
ident Nana Patole is
giving these days as his
statements are not ac-
cordingtothepartyline
and are seen more as
statements of personal
ambition. Nana Patole
is repeatedly saying
that Congress will fight
alone in the next elec-
tions while stressing
that Congress has been
cheated in the alliance
earlier. If his point is
taken seriously, it
means that Congress
will fight the next elec-
tion without NCP
. Keep
in mind that Congress
andNCPhavebeencon-

er since 1999. Only once
inthemiddleof the2019
assembly elections,
both the parties had
fought separately and
its result should have
given the Congress an
ideaof whatitsstatusis
in Maharashtra. The
Congress had finished
fourth in the four-cor-
nered contest.
Secondly, in the next
Lok Sabha elections,
Congress is preparing
to fight by forming a big
alliance, so how can the
party leave its oldest
ally
. Congress leaders
are assuming that there
will be coordination
with the NCP in the
2024 Lok Sabha elec-
tions and the Congress
will fight together in
the assembly elections
to be held in the same
year. Then the question
is, why is Nana Patole
givingthestatementop-
posite to Congress’s fu-
ture depedency?
The reason for this is
being told that till some
time ago, his status in
the Maharashtra Con-
gress was that of a very
smallleader.Hisstature
was very small com-
pared to Ashok Chavan,
Prithviraj Chavan, Su-
shil Shinde, Rad-
hakrishna Vikhe Patil
or many other old lead-
ers. His stature has in-

the grand-old party
.
Now he wants to estab-
lish himself at par with
the big leaders in the
Congress, and this is
whyhestressesonmak-
ing such statements. It
is said that he is trying
to send out a message
that in Maharashtra,
Congress means Nana
Patole. However this is
not likely to happen.

TOP TWEET W long and contro- versial chapter in Karnataka poli- tics has come to a closewithBSYedi- yurappa’s exit. The Bharatiya Janata Party owes it to BSY wholedittopowerforthefirst time in the southern State in 2008. The four-time chief min- ister’s hunger for power was, however, not satiated as he tried to dig in his heels to serve out his full term. Lin- gayat seers throwing their weight behind him failed to swaytheBJP’stopleadership. Mounting pressure from the high command and from dis- sidents forced him to step down after completing two years as chief minister. Not only is BSY the only chief minister to serve four terms, he also served as lead- er of Opposition three times. BSY’s alleged close ties with the tainted mining baron Ja- nardhana Reddy led to cor- ruption charges being lev- elled against him. He was sent to jail and had to resign in 2011 but made a comeback after being acquitted in 2016. It is hard to accept that the BSY era in Karnataka poli- tics will end after his resig- nation. He lobbied hard for a ministerial berth for his son Vijayendra. It is uncertain, though, if he will be given a role at the Centre or in the State. At the age of 78 BSY is more suited for a Marg Dar- shak role, although after see- ing the fate of LK Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi he may be unwilling to accept that. He will rather prefer a gubernatorial post for him- self and a ministry for his son. Like Lalji Tandon did in Uttar Pradesh. It is uncertain, though, if he will be given a role at the Centre or in the State A Promoted by First India News International Pvt. Ltd. ndia is celebrating the 22nd Kargil Vijay Diwas, the day re- membered for the Indian Ar- my’s successful Operation Vi- jay and the fourth consecutive defeat of the Pakistan army against India. Indian Army fought this battle in extreme weather conditions, snow-cov- eredpeaks, ruggedandbarren mountains, and glaciers. Indi- an armed forces displayed the extraordinary valour and top- class warfare to recapture the Indian territory , infiltrated by the Pak army when both sides abandoned the front line posts during the grinding cold win- ters when temperatures plunged. Officers and soldiers of the Indian Army fought hard on Tololing, Tiger Hill and several other peaks where the Pak army had fortified their positions with bunkers and heavy weapons. The man behind this Pak army’s misadventure was its chief of army staff, General Parvez Musharaff, responsi- ble for many lives across the line and jeopardising the peace between two states. In February 1999, the then Indian PM, A.B Vajpayee, went to Lahore in a bus with the hope that joint efforts of Sharif and Vajpayee would lay a foundation of new Indo- Pak relations. By then, Paki- stani troops had captured around 140 Indian posts in Kargil, and our government and Army did not have a clue about it. We were engaged in the peace process and were putting our efforts to im- prove good relations between both countries; simultane- ously, the Pakistan army es- tablishment was planning its most extensive operation af- ter 1971 against India. Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was singing the commitmenttokeeppeaceand harmony between the two na- tions and reiterate both coun- tries’ determination to imple- menttheShimlaagreementin letter and spirit with the Indi- anPrimeMinister,AtalBehari Vajpayee.Atthesametime, the PakistanArmy ,underthelead- ership of General Pervez Musharraf, was pulling up socks for the execution of an already planned operation of alteringtheLOCandintrusion of the Pakistan Army across the LOC to occupy the strate- gic Indian heights and areas. Neither the Pakistan Army nor its chief, Pervez Mushar- raf, were interested in the La- hore Summit. Later, he reject- ed the Lahore process, stating it did not address the central issue of Kashmir. As mentioned by the Kargil reviewcommitteeinitsreport, RAWsharedinputinFebruary 1999 about the monotony and unhappiness of Pakistan Army leadership toward the upcoming event of the Lahore Summit.Thetoparmybrassof RAW Inputs may not be entire- ly united in their approach to the proposed thaw in Indo-Pak relations. Section of senior armyofficersstillheldthatPa- kistan could not hope to get a favourable deal from India un- less it dealt with India from a position of strength. Reports werealsosharedwiththecabi- net secretary , principal secre- tary to the prime minister, for- eign secretary , home secretary , NSC secretariat, and Director of IB, but ignored. After a few years, Pervez Musharraf him- self proved the inputs correct and said that he saw Lahore Summitasawasteof timeand was never in favour of it. ‘I do not see it (Lahore process) as a low or even a high point be- cause the Lahore Summit was not addressing the main issue. Itisjustaprocess, whichwould neverhavecarriedforwardthe dialogueinaconcretemanner,’ hesaidinaninterviewwithan Indian journalist. Musharaff was also very much frustrated by the out- come of Pakistan’s proxy war in Kashmir, which was more or less nothing. He said every- onemustrealisethattheKash- mir problem was the primary source of tension between In- diaandPakistan, forwhichthe twocountrieshadfoughtwars. ‘ Anybody who thinks that Pa- kistan and India can get very chummy , friendly , and cooper- ate without a solution to the Kashmir issue is not a practi- cal and realistic individual.” Musharraf even suggested to the Pakistan Government to include Kashmir in the fi- nal draft of the Lahore Sum- mit. The ultimate draft gave the impression that Kashmir was a minor irritant between the two countries, and there were many other big issues among them. Like most members of the Pakistani military establish- ment, Musharraf was ada- mantandagainstnormalising the relations with India. One cannot forget that he chose to absent himself from the wel- coming ceremony for Vajpay- ee at the Wagah border. It is no secretinIslamabadthathedid so because he did not want to salute the Prime Minister of a neighbouring country that he regarded as an ‘enemy’. It is now evident that even as the Lahore declaration was executed between Prime Ministers Atal Behari Vaj- payee and Nawaz Sharif, preparations for the intru- sions by Pakistani troops were in full swing. One more example of Pakistan Army leadership is entirely un- trustworthy for pursuing peace process or dialogue be- tween the two countries. Gen Pervez Musharraf had long-standing links with anti- India religious fundamental- ist groups in Pakistan. In 1987, Parvez got promoted to the rank of brigadier. In Sep- tember 1987, an assault was launchedunderthecommand of Brig Pervez on Bilafond La to capture the heights of Siachen. His attempt was beaten back severely by the Indian Army, causing Paki- stan to lose over 300 soldiers. Later in 1998, Musharaff be- came the General of the Paki- stan Army . After being defeat- ed so many times by the In- dian Army , Siachen remained Musharaff’s top priority . What he could not achieve twelve years before, now he had the opportunity and com- plete authority to make a plan to snatch Siachen from India through Kargil. Moreover, Musharraf has nurturedthisideafrom1988to 1989. It is a fact that the Paki- stani military was engaged in preparations for Kargil even beforethetwoprimeministers met in Lahore. The newfound nuclear status of Pakistan is likelytohavefuelledthedesire to make sub-conventional gains in Kashmir. Also, the string of Siachen is still pain- ing deep inside, and all efforts of takingrevengeweresevere- ly beaten back by the Indian Army . As Benazir Bhutto said in her electronic media inter- view,’ There has always been a plan of the Pakistan Army to do something, which could have retrieved us what we lost in Siachen.’ She refused the plan when it was put to her by the Pakistan Army because she was aware of its destruc- tive results and consequences. According to Brigadier Shaukat Qadir of Pak army, ‘In 1998–99, there was a grow- ing concern in the Pakistan establishment that the Kash- miri cause was losing its in- ternational salience and the waning militancy in Jammu and Kashmir needed a reju- venation. Under the garb of a Mujahideen operation, the military operation would cre- ate a military threat that could lead it to a military so- lution and force India to the negotiating table from a Pa- kistan of weakness.’ THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL I It is now evident that even as the Lahore declaration was executed between Prime Ministers Atal Behari Vajpayee and Nawaz Sharif, preparations for the intrusions by Pakistani troops were in full swing. One more example of Pakistan Army leadership is entirely untrustworthy for pursuing peace process or dialogue between the two countries The man behind this Pak army’s misadventure was its chief of army staff, General Parvez Musharaff, responsible for many lives across the line and jeopardising the peace between two states AZAD SINGH RATHORE The Writer is author of book Kargil The Heights of Bravery KARGIL MUSHARAFF THE EVILDOER

Anita Hada New Delhi: The Con- gress leaders are shocked by the state- ments that Maharash- tra Congress state pres- ident Nana Patole is giving these days as his statements are not ac- cordingtothepartyline and are seen more as statements of personal ambition. Nana Patole is repeatedly saying that Congress will fight alone in the next elec- tions while stressing that Congress has been cheated in the alliance earlier. If his point is taken seriously, it means that Congress will fight the next elec- tion without NCP . Keep in mind that Congress andNCPhavebeencon- testingelections togeth- er since 1999. Only once inthemiddleof the2019 assembly elections, both the parties had fought separately and its result should have given the Congress an ideaof whatitsstatusis in Maharashtra. The Congress had finished fourth in the four-cor- nered contest. Secondly, in the next Lok Sabha elections, Congress is preparing to fight by forming a big alliance, so how can the party leave its oldest ally . Congress leaders are assuming that there will be coordination with the NCP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elec- tions and the Congress will fight together in the assembly elections to be held in the same year. Then the question is, why is Nana Patole givingthestatementop- posite to Congress’s fu- ture depedency? The reason for this is being told that till some time ago, his status in the Maharashtra Con- gress was that of a very smallleader.Hisstature was very small com- pared to Ashok Chavan, Prithviraj Chavan, Su- shil Shinde, Rad- hakrishna Vikhe Patil or many other old lead- ers.
