Jaipur: Claiming that
he had already in-
formed the high com-
mand about horse-
trading conspiracies
to ‘poach’ Congress
legislators, Rajasthan
Chief MInister Ashok
Gehlot said on Tues-
day that none of the
MLAs should have
fallen for the trap.
“We all knew that the
conspiracy was huge
and had been going on
for the last 6 months.
Some of our colleagues
went astray to Delhi,
but BJP’s intentions of
creating a situation like
Karnataka and Madhya
Pradesh by playing
dirty money politics
were not fulfilled. The
game was open, but
some MLAs could not
cope with it, and now
they are answerable to
the public who voted for
them. It is unbelievable
how trading of crores
of rupees is being done
in the country,” Gehlot
said while addressing
the media minutes after
he met Governor Kalraj
Mishra at Rajbhawan.
“I am sad to say
that the circumstanc-
es of horse-trading
are precarious and
this is the first time
after independence
that a ruling party is
trying to break, twist
and topple state gov-
ernments on the basis
of money power. This
is the first time in the
last 70 years that our
democracy is in peril.
Before this, govern-
ments have changed
smoothly, strengthen-
ing the essence of de-
mocracy,” said the
Chief Minister.
He further added, “In
the end, we gave them a
full chance by holding a
meeting of MLAs on
Monday and Tuesday,
but they did not attend
it. We got information
that 8-10 people from
the group wanted to
come for the meeting.
Now, there is nothing
in the hands of for-
mer PCC Chief Sachin
Pilot. The group pre-
sent with him is play-
ing in BJP’s hands as
all the arrangements
are done by BJP.”
Gehlot claimed that

ernment Turn on P6

Jaipur: After being en-
gaged in a 18 month old
cold war with his deputy
and PCC Chief Sachin
Pilot, Chief Minister
Ashok Gehlot was a ‘re-
laxed man’ on Tuesday
afternoon, once Pilot lost
his deputy CM and PCC
Chief job and also his
two ministers Vishven-
dra Singh and Ramesh
Meena were shown the
door.
According to sources,
after Pilot’s departure,
Gehlot is likely to have a
hundred percent free
hand, mainly in consul-
tation with Avinash
Pande, in making much
awaited political ap-
pointments and an im-
pending cabinet reshuf-
fle, which is likely to take
place on Wednesday or
Thursday afternoon.
Gehlot already sound-
ed Governor Kalraj
Mishra, when he met the
Governor on Tuesday af-
ternoon, to take his for-
mal approval on the re-
moval of Pilot, Vishven-
dra Singh and Ramesh
Meena from his cabinet.
In this way, after Pi-
lot’s exit, Gehlot was
sounding a highly re-
laxed person, who has
now no challenge from
within, at least for the
time being.
Meanwhile, serving a
record tenure of 6 years
5 months and eighteen
days at PCC as its Chief,
former deputy CM
Sachin Pilot was virtu-
ally removed from the
post of deputy CM as
well as PCC Chief, which
he nourished for a long
time and technically, it
was his tenure when in
2018 assembly polls, Con-
gress rose from 21 to 99
seats and formed the gov-
ernment, where Gehlot
was the face of the party
in election campaign and
therefore, along with Pi-
lot, he had also a major
contribution to dislodge
the saffron government
and bring Congress back
to power for a five year
term.
According to sources,
even after his removal
from two top positions,
he was seen completely
enthusiastic and upbeat
along with his supporters
in New Delhi because ac-
cording to a Pilot camp
spokesperson, he is also
now a relaxed person as
he was feeling ‘suffo-
cated’ and rather
humiliated dur-
ing the last one
and a half years in the
Gehlot government,
where inspite of a clear
Sonia-Rahul-Priyanka
understanding in Decem-
ber 2018 to Pilot have a
fifty percent power shar-
ing with Gehlot in the
governance, he was not
given his due share and
was sidelined, while tak-
ing all key decisions of
the state government by
the Chief Minister and
his senior colleagues.
Pilot camp feels that
now he will be in a posi-
tion to carry out a ‘deci-
sive battle’ against Ge-
hlot government, with an
indirect but active sup-
port of BJP. Meanwhile,
Pilot may hold a PC
on Wednesday.

Pilot-loyalist MLAs demand
floor test in Raj Assembly
Jaipur: Amid the politi-
cal crisis in Rajasthan,
the demand for a floor
test by the members of
the Sachin Pilot camp
has gained momentum,
with former state Food
and Civil Supply Minis-
ter Ramesh Meena say-
ing this will make it
clear how many MLAs
are with the Ashok Ge-
hlot government.
Meena, a Pilot loyal-
ist, is among the Con-
gress legislators who
skipped both the Con-
gress legislature party
meetings on Monday
and Tuesday. “Floor test
should be conducted in
the assembly. This will
expose the claim that
the Gehlot government
has support of 109
MLAs,” Meena said.
He, however, refused
to say anything further.
Congress MLA Deep-
endra Singh Shekhawat
too had raised the same
demanded on Monday.
“We want a floor test at
the earliest, which will
make the situation crys-
tal clear. We are with the
Congress and Congress
(state) president Sachin
Pilot,” Singh had told
reporters on Monday.
The Ashok Gehlot
camp has claimed that
109 MLAs, both of Con-
gress and others, are in
support of the govern-
ment. Another Congress

From a practising lawyer to PCC chief!
Dotasara has come a long way in 15 yrs
Yogesh Sharma
Jaipur: Once a prac-
tising lawyer, Ra-
jasthan Education
Minister Govind Sin-
gh Dotasara’s eleva-
tion to the post of the
state Congress chief
came almost 15 years
after he contested his
first election to be-
come a member of a
panchayat samiti in
the state.
Born on October 1,
1964 in Kriparam ji ki
Dhani in Lakshman-
garh of Sikar district,
55-year-old Dotasara
had started his career
at the grassroots level
in the party while
working as a lawyer.
Receiving this eleva-
tion, Dotasara ex-
pressed his gratitude
towards Sonia Gandhi
and Rahul Gandhi and
said that he is hum-
bled by the trust party
has entrusted in him.
“I will work tirelessly
to further strengthen
the party. I will work
keeping in view the
emotions of Congress
workers who fought
hard to bring out gov-
ernment in state and
will start strategising
to bring our govern-
ment again in 2023,”
Dotasara said.
The three-time Con-
gress MLA had con-
tested the Lakshman-
garh pachayat samiti
in 2005 before being
given the party ticket
for the assembly elec-
tions three years later.
On Tuesday, he was
made the state Con-
gress president after
the removal of Sachin
Pilot from the post fol-
lowing accusations
that he tried to topple
the Congress govern-
ment in the state as
part of a “BJP con-
spiracy”. Earlier, he
held the post of the
Sikar district Con-
gress president for
seven years. He also
worked for the Youth
Congress. Dotasara,
who comes from a
farming family, is
known as a Jat leader
and the Congress has
played its OBC card in
appointing him to the
high post.
In 2008, Dotasara for
the first time got the
party ticket to contest
the assembly elections
from the Lakshman-
garh constituency, from
where he won by a slim
margin. Since 2008, he
has been continuously
winning assembly elec-
tions. He was made the
state’s education minis-
ter after the party’s vic-
tory in the 2018 assem-
bly polls.
Earlier, he held the
post of the deputy
chief whip of the Con-
gress in the 14th Ra-
jasthan assembly. Do-
tasara has completed
BCom and then LLB
from Rajasthan Uni-
versity. He practised
in a Sikar court for al-
most two decades.
It is worth noting
that Govind Singh
Dotasara is not just
a Gehlot camp nomi-
nee to fill in Pilot’s
shoes at PCC, but
surprisingly, he was
Pilot’s own nominee
as well. Nearly two
months back, Pilot
had showed his sup-
port to Dotasara, as
and when he leaves
from the PCC, how-
ever, it is nothing
short of conspiracy
of circumstances
that Pilot’s untimely
removal has brought
Dotasara as ‘Gehlot
man’ in the Ra-
jasthan PCC.
The fear of the villain will not last

of today are rich in skills, it is not
easy to suppress them.

In a few minutes long

Jaipur: Chief Minister
Ashok Gehlot met Gov-
ernor Kalraj Mishra on
Tuesday. The CM had
proposed the governor
to remove three minis-
ters from his cabinet
including deputy chief
minister Sachin Pilot,
tourism minister Vishv-
endra Singh and food &
civil supply minister
Ramesh Meena. The
governor accepted his
proposal with immedi-
ate effect.
Later speaking to the
media, Gehlot said that

months. He accused BJP
of having hand in it.
“This is the first govern-
ment after the independ-
ence, which has been in-
dulging in bringing
down elected govern-
ments,” he said.
However, Gehlot rued
that some of his party
colleagues played in
BJP’s hands. “If they
had any issue, they
should have aired their
grievances on party fo-
rum. They had been in-
vited twice but did not
come,” he said.
According to Gehlot,
he did not complain
against Sachin to party
high command, which
took the decision when
no other option left.

Chief Minister Ashok

evening. After the Cabi-

meeting, approved the

decisions were taken re-

Kartikey Dev Singh
Jaipur: Over the past
two days, there have
been enough commen-
taries about the ‘cul-
ture and ethics’ in Ra-
jasthan politics. For-
mer PCC Chief and
deputy Chief Minister
Sachin Pilot is being
seen as a rebel by cer-
tain factions, while
there are others who
claim that he is a rebel
without a cause! How-
ever, with the horde of
political observers and
commentators eschew-
ing history, here is one
line which, perhaps in
the current situation,
holds the most mean-
ing: History Repeats
Itself.
There are compa-
rable similarities be-
tween the current
year ie 2020, and the
story that played out
in 1952. Although
there is a gap of 68
years, but two stories
could never be more
aligned. It was in
1952 when Chief
Minister Jainarayan
Vyas’s leadership
was challenged by a
young leader - Mo-
hanlal Sukhadiya
who rebelled against
him for the ‘chair’.
Vyas had to fight a
‘bloody’ battle
against Sukhadia
much like what CM
Ashok Gehlot fought
against his nemesis
Pilot, who claimed
that Gehlot govern-
ment was in minori-
ty. This had forced
the Gehlot camp to
huddle the MLAs
into his side.
Yet another similar-
ity between the two in-
stances is the favourit-
ism factor of the cen-
tral leadership towards
then Chief Minister
Vyas and current Chief
Minister Gehlot.
Interestingly, in
1952, Jawaharlal
Nehru was the Prime
Minister and had to
come out to diffuse
the situation, but
could not succeed in
keeping status-quo.
The fight broke out
in 1952 after Vyas was
sworn in as Chief Min-
ister even though he
lost the assembly elec-
tion and a ‘young’
Sukhadiya took it as
bone of contention,
thus starting a rebel-
lion.
Interestingly, just
like in those days,
this time too Pilot
camp feels that in
spite of intense hard
work being under-
taken by Pilot to
bring the party to
power, it was Gehlot
who was given the
reins, and this be-
came the ‘bone of
contention’ between
the two camps.
When Sukhadiya re-
belled, Nehru sent Bal-
want Rai to the state
capital Jaipur to re-
solve the difference be-
tween them, much like
the same way the Con-
gress high command
pressed Avinash pan-
de, Randeep Surjewala
and Ajay Maken to the
troubled state.
And this is where
the ‘historical repeti-
tions’ end in this sto-
ry. That is so because
after Balwant Rai
reached Jaipur, he
called a meeting of
party MLAs who
were asked to cast
their vote in support
of either of the ‘war-
ring’ leaders in ‘52,
and the battle was
won by the ‘young
turk’ Sukhadiya,
who became the
youngest ever Chief
Minister of Ra-
jasthan. Cut to 2020,
when Sachin Pilot
rushed to Delhi and
refused to come to
Jaipur. Probably
there could be yet an-
other ‘voting’ on sim-
ilar pattern and set-
tle the score once and
for all, but we will
never know of what
could have been!
THE UNCANNY SIMILARITIES OF CONG’S TWO ERAS
Mumbai: Attacking the
BJP over the political
crisis in Rajasthan, the
Shiv Sena on Tuesday
accused the NDA con-
stituent of working to
destabilise govern-
ments of its opponents
and encouraging horse-
trading in the state.
An editorial in Sena
mouthpiece ‘Saamana’
asked BJP what is it go-
ing to achieve with this
political misadventure
in the “desert”, and said
such moves will turn
the country’s parlia-
mentary democracy
into a desert.
“The central power is
working to destabilise
(the state) governments
of its opponents, the
Shiv Sena alleged.
The country is facing
problems like a corona-
virus-triggered collapse
of the economy and
“Chinese intrusion” in
Ladakh. The killings of
20 Indian soldiers in a
face-off with Chinese
troops in Galwan Valley
is still afresh, it said.
Instead of solving
these issues, the BJP is
interfering in the inter-
nal bickering of the
Congress and “encour-
aging horse-trading” in
Rajasthan, the Sena al-
leged.
What is the BJP go-
ing to achieve with this
political misadventure,
by causing a storm in
the desert? Such steps
will rather turn the par-
liamentary democracy
into a desert,” the party
said. —PTI
Jaipur: Rajasthan BJP
President Satish Poonia
on Tuesday said the
party is not demanding
floor test in the state as-
sembly as of now.
Asked about floor test
Poonia said, “At pre-
sent, we are not de-
manding anything. Our
priority was to bring
forward that it is a cor-
rupt government and it
did mismanagement in
the coronavirus crisis.
It has become a weak
government. First thing
is that this government
should go away in the
interest of the people of
the state.”
Amid the ongoing po-
litical crisis in Ra-
jasthan, opposition BJP
leaders on Tuesday met
in Jaipur to discuss the
current situation in the
state.
A meeting took place
at the BJP state office
here in which party na-
tional joint general sec-
retary V Satish, BJP
state president Satish
Poonia, leader of oppo-
sition Gulab Chand Ka-
taria and deputy leader
of opposition Rajendra
Rathore were present.
“The leaders are dis-
cussing the current po-
litical situation in the
state,” the party sourc-
es said.
“This government’s
foundation is weak.
Congress has been
claiming that their
leaders are united but
it’s clear that there are
internal disputes, be-
cause of which, Sachin

Thereafter, me and my friend
hadaweek longseriesof events
in Nepal. Everywhere, we got
a hearty welcome and utmost
respect. Nepal’s hospitality was
par excellence. Attending the
evening aarti at Holy shrine of
Pashupathinath ji was divine
gift . Never ever did we feel that
we were in a different country.
I met a young couple at Palpa,
Nepal wherein the girl was
from New Delhi, India and mar-
ried to a Doctor from Nepal.
Similarly, large no of Nepalese
families are working in India.
In Army also, I have fought
shoulder to shoulder with Ne-
pali origin soldiers. When our
Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath
Singh says “India aur Nepal
mein Roti- Beti ka rishta hai”,
I totally concur with him.
BROTHERS AND
NEIGHBOUR’S DYNAMICS
Let me give you a simple story
for better understanding. India
and Nepal are like two brothers
staying together but having
separate family affairs. Elder
brother (India) is well to do,
more prosperous and has re-
spect in community as head of
thefamily.Youngerbrother(Ne-
pal) is not so well off, does farm-
ingandagriculturebutishappy
and contended. Both have been
living happily for ages.
Now enters a zamindaar, “Ek
Villain” as neighbour (China)
who has muscle power and fi-
nancial clout with him. He
makes friends with younger
brother and poisons his mind.
He convinces the younger that
elder is being unfair and is a
hurdle in prosperity of younger
one. Thereby, the seeds of ha-
tredandjealousyaresown. The
neighbor then steps in to offer
him soft loan for the business
andmortgageshisland,without
knowledge of elder brother.
When objected by elder brother,
he instigates younger one to
fight with elder. Both brothers
become enemies and start fight-
ing at neighbor’s behest. This
simile aptly explains the dy-
namics of Indo- Nepal and Chi-
narelationship,insimpleterms.
INDO NEPAL:
CHANGING RELATIONS
India and Nepal are insepara-
bles. Thousands of people in
India and Nepal cross the open
border every day to work, buy,
sell, and transact businesses.
Cousins deal with one another
across the borders; business as-
sociates with sons and daugh-
ters married into each other
families. Lenders and suppli-
ers across offered credit based
on mutual trust. Cash also
moved easily across the border.
The has now become a bound-
ary that separates.
The trade war between Chi-
na and the United States, along
with the border skirmishes be-
tween China and India, puts
Nepal back into the center of
regional geopolitical activity.
India’s relationship with Nepal
is at its lowest point since the
five-month “Indian Blockade”
of 2015. For Nepal, the biggest
change in geopolitics since the
September 2015 blockade has
been increased Chinese inter-
est to provide an economic al-
ternative to reliance on India.
Border disputes between two
countries are another conten-
tious issue that occasionally
creates friction in bilateral rela-
tions. To enhance people-to-peo-
ple relations, Nepal and India
must resolve contentious issues
relating to the border, including
the two major areas of dispute
at Susta and Kalpani.
Nepal understands its eco-
nomic dependency on India but
time has changed the complex-
ion and narrative of India-Ne-
pal relations. Instead of old
relationships between people
and cultures, mutual economic
ties have become pivotal to all
future relations. India has
seen its position erode with
growing Chinese investments.
CHINA’S POISONING
OF MINDS
Often dubbed as ‘China Threat
3.0’, the Chinese sharp power in
Nepal has come with massive
propaganda and national inter-
ests with implications for In-
dia’s influence in the region.
Sharppoweroftenincorporates
tactics of pressure and coer-
cion as a means to interfere,
control and sway decisions of
other countries. BRI is certain-
ly one such move of China to
grow its roots under its expan-
sionist tactics across the world.
WAY AHEAD
India and Nepal must do more
than merely resolve border is-
sues. They must return to the
core strengths of their unique
social, cultural, strategic, po-
litical, and economic bonds
and modernize ties to directly
connect its people, markets, fi-
nance, and technology. India
must work harder in building
a pragmatic and realistic part-
nership with Nepal.
India and Nepal could create
modern business hubs that ena-
ble young tech-savvy Nepali en-
trepreneurs to connect with In-
dia’s innovations. It could offer
credit lines that small and me-
dium enterprises could directly
accessforcrossbordertradeand
investments. It could harmonize
and ease cross border trading
rules. Most importantly, it must
encourage Indian and Nepali
businesses to flourish.
India needs to reset its rela-
tions with Nepal and re-invent
its public diplomacy, rather
than micromanaging Nepal,
which has only undermined
India-Nepal ties. The govern-
ments of India and Nepal must
revise the narrative, modern-
ize their policies, and get out of
the way so that the ties between
people thrive again. Centuries
of social, cultural, political,
strategic, and economic ties
can only remain strong if they
evolve to remain relevant in
changing times.

fter President
Donald Trump
said during his
June 20 rally in
Tulsa, Oklaho-
ma, that increased testing
was responsible for the
surging number of infec-
tions, the condemnation of
the inaccurate claim was
swift.
Six days later, during a
Fox News town hall, Sean
Hannity asked Trump
about those remarks on in-
creased testing.
“Sometimes I jokingly
say, or sarcastically say, if
we didn’t do tests we would
look great,” he replied.
This seems to be a pat-
tern. Two months earlier,
the president had mused
about the beneficial effects
of injecting disinfectants
into the body to combat
COVID-19. After many
health officials expressed
their dismay, Trump re-
peatedly claimed that he
was just being sarcastic.
That same month, after
he misspelled “Nobel
Prize” in a tweet – writing
it out as “Noble Prize” –
he deleted the tweet be-
fore falling back on on a
familiar excuse: sarcasm.
What is it about sarcasm
that makes it such a con-
venient excuse for people
who are trying to distance
themselves from what
they’ve said? As I describe
in my recent book on irony
and sarcasm, most cogni-
tive scientists and other
language researchers
think of sarcasm as a form
of verbal irony. Both ways
of speaking involve saying
the opposite of what you
mean. But the goals of
irony and sarcasm are ac-
tually different.
For example, if someone
slowly intones “What beau-
tiful weather!” on a cold
and rainy day, it’s clear
they’re speaking ironically
about a disappointing state
of affairs. In general, irony
is used to provide commen-
tary on unexpected and
negative outcomes.
Sarcasm, on the other
hand, is most frequently
used to disparage the ac-
tions of other people. If
someone tells you that
you’re a real genius after
you forgot to meet them
for an important appoint-
ment, they clearly don’t
mean that you’re mental-
ly gifted. Simply put, iro-
ny is commentary, but
sarcasm is criticism.
That seems straightfor-
ward enough. But in ac-
tual practice, the line be-
tween irony and sarcasm
is blurry and confusing.
Many people assert they
are being sarcastic when
they are in fact being
ironic, as in the previous
example of the weather.
The enlargement of the
domain of sarcasm – at
irony’s expense – is a lin-
guistic shift that has been
going on for some time. In
fact, linguist Geoffrey Nun-
berg called attention to this
phenomenon 20 years ago.
So it’s hard to fault the
president for conflating the
two. Another element that
makes sarcasm tricky to
grasp has to do with saying
the opposite of what is
meant. The recipient of
such a statement isn’t sup-
posed to take it literally.
For this reason, when we
use verbal irony or sar-
casm, we might employ
cues to signal our nonlit-
eral intent. We may, for ex-
ample, speak in a tone of
voice that’s slower, lower
and louder than how we
speak normally. Our pitch
may swoop up or down.
Ironic statements are also
frequently accompanied by
facial displays, such as a
smirk or the rolling of the
eyes.And that’s why, when
being sarcastic over text or
email, we’ll use emojis to
relay nonliteral intent. Of
course, even then, there’s
no guarantee that the re-
cipient will interpret the
message correctly.

Pass in Uttarakhand and Kalapani
and Limpiyadhura, all highly stra-

own, Kathmandu has now laid claim to India’s
presiding deity Lord Ram and also the place
of his birth Ayodhya. For Hindus all over the
world, Ayodhya lies 135 km from Lucknow in
Uttar Pradesh and Ram was born here. There
has been a lot of blood-letting and decades of
litigation to prove that. Construction of a
grand temple is now underway here.
PM KP Sharma Oli, however, has given a
new twist to Ram and Ayodhya. In a conten-
tious claim Oli said, “We still believe we gave
Sita to Prince Ram but we gave the prince too,
from Ayodhya not India.” Ayodhya Oli was re-
ferring to lies in Nepal’s Birbhum district. He
also accused India of “cultural oppression”, as
opposed to India’s assertion of a long history
of religious and cultural ties with the “Hindu
Kingdom”. Oli had also blamed India for
spread of Covid-19 in Nepal. Ever since Oli’s
ascendance as PM, Nepal Communist Party
has moved closer to China which is now di-
rectly interfering in affairs of the hill state.
Just when it appeared that Oli was going to be
ousted after a rift, Chinese ambassador Hou
Yanqui went around meeting every dissident
to ensure that Oli remained in power. Indians
have reacted strongly to Nepal’s claims on
Ram but Oli is beyond New Delhi’s control.
ith 933,450 Covid-19 cases India is
third worst hit country after the US
and Brazil. With death maintaining
a rising trend over last two months,
the pandemic presents a scary sce-
nario. The government is more upbeat about
the recoveries–590,219–than it is about the ris-
ing numbers. At 24,281 fatality numbers sug-
gest that we are handling patients very well
but there’s a growing feeling that with many
positive cases going unreported the deaths are
not being accounted for. Treatment cost in pri-
vate hospitals being too high and government
hospitals poorly managed work as a deterrent
for many. India recorded over 28,000 new cases
in a day and the numbers will touch a new
peak on Wednesday.

Washington: It seems

recognise the ultimate
sacrifice made by its
soldiers for the country
as the government is
pressuring the families
of soldiers who died in
Galwan face off to not
conduct burials and in-
person funeral ceremo-
nies, according to a US
intelligence assess-
ment.
The bloody brawl be-
tween Chinese and In-
dian troops took place
on June 15 in which
both sides suffered cas-
ualties. India, without
any hesitation, accept-
ed that 20 of its soldiers
have been martyred in
the clash. They are be-
ing hailed as heroes.
Prime Minister Naren-
dra Modi, during his
monthly radio pro-
gramme Mann ki Baat
on June 28, conveyed
condolences to the kin
of Army personnel who
lost their lives in the
Galwan valley clash
and said that the sacri-
fice of these families is
“worth worshipping”.
Even after the one
month of the incident,
China has still not dis-
closed how many of its
soldiers were killed in
the incident.
The grieving Chinese
families who have lost
their loved ones in the
clash are being mis-
treated by the Chinese
government. First, the
Chinese government re-
fused to accept the casu-
alties on its side follow-
ing the incident and
now it has denied burial
of the fallen soldiers.
According to the US
intelligence assess-
ment, China is not ac-
cepting that its soldiers
have been killed in the
showdown in order to
cover up an episode that
Beijing appears to con-
sider a blunder, report-
ed the U.S. News.
The violent face-off
occurred after China at-
tempted to unilaterally
change the status quo
during de-escalation in
eastern Ladakh. India
has said that the situa-
tion could have been
avoided if the agree-
ment at the higher level
been scrupulously fol-
lowed by the Chinese
side.
The Chinese govern-
ment has acknowledged
the deaths of only a few
officers so far. Indian
intercepts have re-
vealed that the Chinese
side suffered 43 casual-
ties including the dead
and seriously injured.
American intelli-
gence believes that 35 of
the Chinese soldiers
were killed in the show-
down.

New Delhi: The Uttar
Pradesh government
told the Supreme Court
Tuesday that it would
file a status report on
encounters of gangster
Vikas Dubey and his as-
sociates.
A bench headed by
Chief Justice S A Bobde
said it may consider ap-

headed by a former
judge to inquire into the
encounters of Dubey,
his aides as well as the
killing of eight Uttar

The apex court said it
would hear on July 20

the encounters.
The bench, also com-
prising Justices R S

toring of investigation
is something which the
court is very reluctant
to do.
The top court said it
may consider doing
something similar to
what was done in the
case of encounter of
four accused in the
gang-rape and murder
of a veterinarian in Tel-
angana, in which the
apex court had appoint-
ed inquiry commission
headed by a former

Solicitor General

ing for Uttar Pradesh,
told the bench that the
state has taken the mat-
ter seriously and would
file a status report by
July 16 detailing the
steps taken by the au-
thority.

on Tuesday resumed
talks after a six-day hia-

party from a split in the
wake of growing differ-

factions led by them.
Prachanda’s press ad-

The talks are taking
place ahead of the cru-

which is expected to de-

previously alleged that
his detractors were try-

The key meeting is
taking place days after
NCP executive chair-

to split and any attempt
from anywhere to weak-
en its unity would hurt
the fight against the
coronavirus pandemic

his large heartedness.
After the govern-

Those who know
Modi say that this is
not the first time that
he has gone out of the
way and shown large
heartedness towards a
family that has left no
opportunity to bad
mouth him, demean
him and use every
trick out of the book
to nail him. The gen-
eral impression being
that both sides have a
visceral hatred for one
another.
It was in 2011 when
Sonia Gandhi had to
travel abroad for
health related treat-

was Modi who sent a

gress, which was keen
to keep Sonia Gan-

secret, was not only
surprised but was also
compelled to share de-

I-Day celebrations
New Delhi: For the
first time in history, In-
dia will witness a com-

pendence Day function
at Red Fort in the na-
tional capital, due to
COVID-19 pandemic.
This year, only 20 per
cent VVIPs or other
participants will be
able to witness the live
speech of Prime Minis-
ter Narendra Modi com-
pared to previous years.
Defence Secretary Ajay
Kumar and ASI Direc-
tor-General already vis-
ited the Red Fort last
week to take stock of
the preparations. Ku-
mar took stock of ar-
rangements and also
asked the concerned of-
ficials to make arrange-
ments keeping social
distancing in mind.
According to sources,
there would be a com-
plete change this time.
While there would no
children, cadets of the
National Cadet Corps
would attend the cele-
brations at the Red Fort.
Similarly, unlike ear-
lier times, VVIPs
wouldn’t be able to sit at
therampart,fromwhere
the prime minister de-
livers Independence
Day speech. Close to 900
VVIPs used to sit on the
top on both sides earlier.
But this time, they will
have to sit at the lower
level, with only around
a hundred allowed.
More significantly, as
many as 1,500 Corona
winners, who recovered
from the disease, will
attend the function.
Among, them 500 would
be from local police.
The other 1,000 would
be from different parts
of the country.
Till last year, at least
10,000 people used to at-
tend the function to wit-
ness the speech of the
prime minister.
In a meeting recently,
the Ministry of Defence
decided that Corona
winners, instead of the

Jaipur: Call it COVID
19 impact. Chartered
flights have increased
compared to regular
flights at Jaipur Air-
port.
Business honchos
and senior politicians
have been embarking
on chartered flights in-
stead of regular air-
lines. In the last one and
half months, 78 char-
tered flights have land-
ed or took off from
Jaipur Airport, which
comes to an average of
two flights a day.Earlier,
chartered flights were
rare in the months of
June and July. At the
max, one chartered
flight would take off on
a day but it has now
doubled.
The ongoing political
crisis in the state could
also have played a role
in it. Apart from politi-
cians, business honchos
have also been using
chartered flights.
Among the business
houses which used
chartered flights were
Shri Cement, Birla, Re-
liance, and some other
groups. A chartered
flight costs Rs two to
three lakh per hour.
The only plausible
reason for this could be
to avoid contact with so
many people on a regu-
lar flight, which ex-
plains that more than
two months after regu-
lar flights started, there
is still no pick up
in the number of flyers.
No surprise then that
the number of flights
has not increased.
All major airlines in-
cluding Indigo, Air
Asia, Air India, and
Spice Jet had given
schedule of 20 flights
but only 15 or 16 flights
are operational.
On average, daily
eight to nine flights are

2NDFRONTPOSTAL REG NO. JPC/010/2019-21
Cong endorses astute Gehlot, CM safe for now; Sachin
crashlands on Cong turf, but Pilot may sore with new front!
z How do you see the
power tussle between
CM Ashok Gehlot and
Ex- Deputy CM &
PCC Chief Sachin Pi-
lot ? What was the
background to this
battle ?
Jagdeesh Chandra:
Time is the most pow-
erful entity, as it can
turn a filthy rich into a
pauper in minutes.
Considering the
ground reality that
Sachin Pilot is former
Deputy CM and PCC
chief today, has a back-
ground, which dates
back to 2018 assembly
elections and the battle
to become CM. Pilot un-
der some good faith ei-
ther self nurtured or
propelled by somebody,
believed that neither
he or Gehlot will con-
test the 2018 elections
and the High Command
will ultimately appoint
him as the CM after the
elections. But seasoned
Gehlot’s suo motto de-
cision to contest elec-
tion from Jodhpur
forced him to contest as
well. Both became
MLAs and in a natural
& democratic show of
strength in legislative
meeting, Pilot lost to
Gehlot by 79-21, which
even Rahul Gandhi
couldn’t refuse. Gehlot
is undisputed master-
mind of garnering
MLA support in a legis-
lative game. This start-
ed the trust deficit,
which didn’t let the
power sharing formula
work between Gehlot
and Pilot all through-
out one and a half year
tenure of the govt and
finally, has this day in
front of all.
	z What will be the
impact of this deci-
sion on Pilot and his
camp, BJP and its
central leadership ?
Was decision made
too soon or too late?
Although Gehlot is
known for his slow and
well- thought deci-
sions, but this time,
state incharge, Avi-
nash Pande helped &
insisted on ruthless
and effective decision.
The impact of the deci-
sion on Gehlot camp is
of fear & respect for
their disciplinarian
Chief Minister who is
backed by the High
Command. This has
apart from other things
forced the fence sitters,
who might have opted
for Manesar hospitali-
ty, in maintaining sta-
tus quo at least for now.
There are two reac-
tions from the Pilot
camp, first of losing
out on the parent body,
Congress they were af-
filiated to and second
is of no regrets as the
battle lines have been
drawn clear now. Even
Pilot has a clear pic-
ture that these are my
men standing with me
in the battle ahead.
The impact on BJP is
also clear that they are
a step closer to their
ultimate aim of unset-
tling another govt of
opposition. All the re-
actions by BJP leaders
after Pilot’s expulsion,
point in one direction
that they both are natu-
ral allies now onwards.
Lastly, the Congress
High Command must
be feeling low with un-
ceremonious exit of a
young leader whom
they themselves had
groomed. So it isn’t a
good day for Congress.
z How do you rate se-
lection of Govind
Singh Dotasara as
PCC Chief ?
First of all look at the
conspiracy of circum-
stances, Dotasara’s
name for next PCC
Chief was first for-
warded by Sachin Pilot
himself two months
ago. By far, he is the
best choice from the
existing Jat leader-
ship. He is a grass
roots worker, been
elected thrice and has
performed well as edu-
cation minister. An-
other interesting as-
pect is that the chiefs
of both state Congress
and BJP now are Jats
from Shekhawati cre-
ating an interesting
situation.
	z Most media reports
say there was no com-
munication between
Pilot and Gandhi
family so much so
that Pilot himself
wasn’t interested in
any communication
with them. Do you
feel all doors of com-
munication between
Pilot and Congress
have been shut?
Yes, all doors have been
shutandhehasbeenvir-
tually expelled from the
party by removing him
from all responsibilities.
Apart from the main
stream media reports,
there was a word that
Gandhi family was in
communication with Pi-
lot via second rank lead-
ership. In any case, he
had gone too far to a
pointof noreturnwitha
profound thought. Now
the fact is that he and
BJP are natural allies.
	z According some re-
ports Pilot has put
three conditions for
his return to the par-
ty. How true is that?
That came to me as well
that the first condition
was that he be made the
CM, may be at a later
date, but with immedi-
ate public announce-
ment. This shows the
level of trust he had on
the High Command.
Second was to replace
state in-charge Avinash
Pande with someone of
his choice. The third
condition was to give
him Home and Finance
portfolios apart from
fulfilling his quota of
8-10 ministers. But the
third condition was ir-
relevant in light of the
demand to become the
CM. So, all three condi-
tions could not be met
due to hard ground re-
alities.
	z Does the recently
concluded Rajya Sab-
ha elections also con-
tributed to the bitter-
ness between Gehlot
and Pilot? And Do
you feel that Pilot
was painted as a vil-
lain by showing him
aligning with the
BJP in the Rajya
Sabha elections?
This is a fact that some
of the self- styled Pilot
supporters were in-
volved in the horse
trading attempts in
the run up to the upper
house elections. Al-
though Pilot himself
had nothing to do with
it but when you pre-
sent such a case sce-
nario in front of Con-
gress High Command
along with the version
of BJP attempts to pull
down Gehlot govt, then
the over all picture
that emerges is the one
that shows both Pilot
and BJP working to-
wards same end and
hence Pilot emerged as
a villain. When Pilot
presented his case in
Delhi, he said that
there was no threat to
Gehlot govt and the
whole exercise was
done to project Gehlot
as the sole person ca-
pable of keeping the
required votes togeth-
er for assured Con-
gress victory in the
Rajya Sabha elections,
which sidelined and
damaged Sachin Pi-
lot’s credibility & in-
tegrity.
	z Was the complaint
registered by CM con-
fidante Chief Whip
Dr Mahesh Joshi
with SOG part of this
strategy ?
Naturally, it was part
of the strategy after
the state govt got con-
vinced of the attempts
of horse trading &
poaching to topple the
Gehlot govt, which re-
sulted in complaint by
Mahesh Joshi with
SOG later also taken
up by the ACB. Later
events prove that
there was certainly
something happening
on the ground related
to horse trading &
poaching.
	z Some senior Con-
gressmen in Delhi feel
that the FIR step was
an action taken in
haste. What do you
feel?
This impression was
created by anti- Gehlot
lobby in Delhi that it
was a hastily taken de-
cision as it deserved a
bit delayed response.
Now these are all advi-
sory in nature and real
analysis is done by the
one, who is facing the
heat in the field. He
knows best. Then this
could also be retaliato-
ry action taken by Pilot
camp in Delhi. Remem-
ber normally this is not
Gehlot’s style of func-
tioning as he keeps po-
litical affairs strictly
political. But this time,
he felt that the situa-
tion needed a legal
remedy so he gave a go
ahead for filing the
complaint.
	z Do you see any
chances of change in
State Govt in near fu-
ture? Will Pilot camp
with BJP’s support
be able to topple Ge-
hlot?
Politics is game of pos-
sibilities, so nobody
can predict exact ten-
ure of any Chief Minis-
ter however powerful.
Now, the dam has a
leak, so all depends on
how you deal with this
leak in the dam. But
yes the action taken by
the Congress has miti-
gated any immediate
threat to the govt. Ge-
hlot has definitely con-
solidated for a couple
of months to come. One
very important aspect
is that now Gehlot is
not against Pilot alone,
but also has to confront
those powers from Del-
hi, who have so far nev-
er failed in their plans.
	z Do you think that
Pilot is being remote
controlled by BJP?
Sachin Pilot is too
smart, alert, politically
savvy and educated to
be remote controlled by
anybody. But what is
sure is that he is in
close coordination with
the BJP for quite some
time now. Even Modi
and Amit Shah have a
liking for Pilot for rea-
sons other than politi-
cal like they consider
him young, smart, edu-
cated and clean image
who can be part of
their party and circum-
stances are making the
situation possible. Any-
ways Pilot has chosen a
track so let’s see.
	z What will Pilot do
join BJP, form third
front or opt for his
new party?
This is a million dollar
question in the current
scenario. There are two
options in front of him.
First is the closest to
his heart is to form a
third front as he has his
apprehensions regard-
ing ultimate treatment
meted out to Scindia in
form of the portfolio al-
lotted etc. He doesn’t
want to completely rely
on BJP for his political
career. Now forming
the third front may
have some legal com-
plications, but that all
will be part of the fu-
ture so let’s assume
that he will opt for the
third front ultimately.
	z What exactly is the
deal which Pilot has
struck with the BJP?
The most motivating or
inspiring factor for Pi-
lot is to become the
Chief Minister by top-
pling Ashok Gehlot.
Pilot will take anybody
and everybody, who can
help in realising this
goal. The deal which
BJP and Pilot have
struck is that Pilot will
form the third front,
topple the Gehlot govt
with support from BJP,
become the Chief Min-
ister for six months
and then hand over the
reigns to Gajendra Sin-
gh Shekhawat. Pilot
has now become a seri-
ous threat in combina-
tion with the unknown
forces of the BJP in
Delhi. It might take
time, but a liquidation
process has begun,
which definitely isn’t
good for the state or
good governance or the
interests of the com-
mon people.
	z What are the pros-
pects of Operation
Lotus in Rajasthan?
It is a well-defined mod-
el. They do what they
commit. In MP, the BJP
leadership has fulfilled
some of its promises to
the people, who joined
with Scindia. Rest of
the promises will also
be fulfilled with time
like election tickets
from their constituen-
cies or other political
appointments. In Ra-
jasthan, the success de-
pends upon how far
does CM Gehlot allow
them to penetrate be-
cause they need 30-32
MLAs. If Gehlot is able
to stop his MLAs from
poaching then good
otherwise, their model
is perfect in today’s
politics.
z How do you see the
Vasundhara factor in
present circumstanc-
es?
She is currently silent
and enjoying the bliss
of Dholpur, reading
books, which she is
fond of and admiring
nature. She is in con-
stant touch with the
party workers through
the phone. She is ex-
pected to be in Jaipur
on Wednesday, but
there is no opportunity
to strike right now.
Any opportunity only
seems to be coming in
2023, when she might
find a divided Con-
gress house at the end
of its tenure or as the
current graph of Ge-
hlot govt suggests, Ge-
hlot might surprising-
ly repeat. Now let’s as-
sume BJP game plan
with Pilot successfully
toppling Gehlot govt.
Now when Pilot relin-
quishes the CM throne
after a committed 6
months’ period and
‘IF’ Gajendra Shekha-
wat is about to be
sworn as CM, what
Vasundhara Raje does
in those preceding 48
hours, is to be seen.
	z How do you com-
pare the popularity
graphs of Ashok Ge-
hlot and Sachin Pi-
lot?
There are different
models of individual
popularity of political
leaders. Once Ashok
Gehlot, after losing
election, went to a hotel
for dinner. There were
almost 150-200 people
waiting to welcome
him in the night de-
spite his defeat while
he himself expected
only 5-6 persons. Ac-
cording to me, Ashok
Gehlot is the most pop-
ular person in Con-
gress in the state. No-
body comes near him.
Then you have Vasund-
hara Raje. Be it Gajen-
dra Shekhawat, Rajen-
dra Rathore or Satish
Poonia or for that mat-
ter anybody in BJP, she
has maximum appeal
amongst people in all
the BJP leaders. After
Gehlot and Raje, Pilot
is the new emerging
third most popular face
in the state, irrespec-
tive of the face whether
he is from Progressive
Congress, Third front
or BJP. I have myself
witnessed his clout
among the crowd dur-
ing the election cam-
paign during the last
assembly elections. A
crowd of 3000-4000 was
really enthusiastic to
listen to him.
z How do you see the
role played by senior
Congress leaders like
Ahmed Patel, KC
Venugopal, Randeep
Surjewala, Avinash
Pande, Ajay Makan
and Vivek Bansal in
the whole crisis?
Only two names are
really relevant out of
the lot you men-
tioned. Ahmed Patel
and Avinash Pande.
Surjewala too was ac-
tive but he was more
of ‘special appear-
ance’. But leaders
like Ahmed Patel and
Avinash Pande keep
constant touch. In
fact the Avinsh Pande
stamp in the action
taken on dissidents is
clearly visible. The
kind of decisive ac-
tion which he and Ge-
hlot took is not ex-
pected in Rajasthan.
All the names which
you mentioned had a
distinct quality of be-
ing unanimous and
talking in one lan-
guage without any
contradictions or dif-
ferences. As far as
contacting Pilot was
concerned Avinash
Pande did try, he tried
to contact but with no
response from Pilot.
But Pande did his
duty.

Editor-In-Chief of First India, Jagdeesh Chandra, in The New JC Show, analyses the power
tussle between CM Ashok Gehlot and Ex-Deputy CM Sachin Pilot and talks about the road
ahead for Pilot, Operation Lotus in Rajasthan and will Gehlot be able to keep his tribe together?
elfies are all the rage
nowadays, there is a
rare person who has
not clicked a selfie
sometime or the oth-
er. Not only are they
the new autograph
with celebrities; selfies are a
signalof ‘I,me,myself’where
you can do it alone- get
dressed to kill, click a selfie
and upload on your social me-
dia account.
The term ‘Selfie’ was in-
vented in the year 2005, by
Photographer Jim Krause.
After the launch of iPhone 4
with a front camera, selfies
became a ‘thing’. You’ll be
surprised to know, that it was
one of the ‘Top 10 Buzzwords’
in the year 2012.
Since selfies flatter the im-
age of a person on social me-
dia, the researchers say that
they are associated with low-
er self-esteem. Yes, it’s true;
it is a major sign of insecu-
rity. Since social media is
known for gaining a lot of
attention, various people
take selfies to flaunt their
day-to-day schedule and their
happenings. Over time, this
results in increasing the self-
confidence of an individual
and making them accept
their looks!
Even though selfies may
seem really glamorous, there
are times when they become
too dangerous. In a report, it
is said that in the past few
years, there have been over
400 people who have died in a
selfie-related incident; may it
be fires, accidents, falls,
drowning, and the list can
just go on and on. This is not
just it- there are times when
people take selfies the dead
bodies to post it on social me-
dia. Isn’t that crazy? But de-
spite the risks involved, there
are people who still take ex-
tremely risky selfies, just to
create a boom on social me-
dia and be the talking-point
among some people.
But at the end of the day,
selfies never fail to make a
person happy. Nowadays on
social media, there are vari-
ous filters to make selfies
even more interesting. It all
started with Snapchat com-
ing out with trending filters
and the trend then shifted to
Instagram, where one can
find not just filters to bright-
en up their selfie, but games
too! Yes. Turn to P12

Some of our colleagues went astray to Delhi, but BJP’s intentions of creating a situation like Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh by playing dirty money politics were not fulfilled. The game was open, but some MLAs could not cope with it, and now they are answerable to the public who voted for them. It is unbelievable how trading of crores of rupees is being done in the country,” Gehlot said while addressing the media minutes after he met Governor Kalraj Mishra at Rajbhawan. “I am sad to say that the circumstanc- es of horse-trading are precarious and this is the first time after independence that a ruling party is trying to break, twist and topple state gov- ernments on the basis of money power. This is the first time in the last 70 years that our democracy is in peril. Before this, govern- ments have changed smoothly, strengthen- ing the essence of de- mocracy,” said the Chief Minister. He further added, “In the end, we gave them a full chance by holding a meeting of MLAs on Monday and Tuesday, but they did not attend it. We got information that 8-10 people from the group wanted to come for the meeting. Now, there is nothing in the hands of for- mer PCC Chief Sachin Pilot. The group pre- sent with him is play- ing in BJP’s hands as all the arrangements are done by BJP.” Gehlot claimed that the people who had come at the time of Madhya Pradesh gov- ernment Turn on P6 122 MLAs, including 107 from Congress, are with us: Gehlot NUMBERS SAY IT ALL CM Ashok Gehlot flashes a victory sign outside Raj Bhawan on Tuesday before going to meet Governor Kalraj Mishra. —PHOTO BY SUMAN SARKAR PARTY DOES NOT BREAK WITH 20 PEOPLE, SAYS CM Aditi Nagar Jaipur: After being en- gaged in a 18 month old cold war with his deputy and PCC Chief Sachin Pilot, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot was a ‘re- laxed man’ on Tuesday afternoon, once Pilot lost his deputy CM and PCC Chief job and also his two ministers Vishven- dra Singh and Ramesh Meena were shown the door. According to sources, after Pilot’s departure, Gehlot is likely to have a hundred percent free hand, mainly in consul- tation with Avinash Pande, in making much awaited political ap- pointments and an im- pending cabinet reshuf- fle, which is likely to take place on Wednesday or Thursday afternoon. Gehlot already sound- ed Governor Kalraj Mishra, when he met the Governor on Tuesday af- ternoon, to take his for- mal approval on the re- moval of Pilot, Vishven- dra Singh and Ramesh Meena from his cabinet. In this way, after Pi- lot’s exit, Gehlot was sounding a highly re- laxed person, who has now no challenge from within, at least for the time being. Meanwhile, serving a record tenure of 6 years 5 months and eighteen days at PCC as its Chief, former deputy CM Sachin Pilot was virtu- ally removed from the post of deputy CM as well as PCC Chief, which he nourished for a long time and technically, it was his tenure when in 2018 assembly polls, Con- gress rose from 21 to 99 seats and formed the gov- ernment, where Gehlot was the face of the party in election campaign and therefore, along with Pi- lot, he had also a major contribution to dislodge the saffron government and bring Congress back to power for a five year term. According to sources, even after his removal from two top positions, he was seen completely enthusiastic and upbeat along with his supporters in New Delhi because ac- cording to a Pilot camp spokesperson, he is also now a relaxed person as he was feeling ‘suffo- cated’ and rather humiliated dur- ing the last one and a half years in the Gehlot government, where inspite of a clear Sonia-Rahul-Priyanka understanding in Decem- ber 2018 to Pilot have a fifty percent power shar- ing with Gehlot in the governance, he was not given his due share and was sidelined, while tak- ing all key decisions of the state government by the Chief Minister and his senior colleagues. Pilot camp feels that now he will be in a posi- tion to carry out a ‘deci- sive battle’ against Ge- hlot government, with an indirect but active sup- port of BJP. Meanwhile, Pilot may hold a PC on Wednesday. 18 MONTH OLD GEHLOT-PILOT COLD WAR COMES TO A TRAGIC END! • 2. Pilot-loyalist MLAs demand floor test in Raj Assembly Jaipur: Amid the politi- cal crisis in Rajasthan, the demand for a floor test by the members of the Sachin Pilot camp has gained momentum, with former state Food and Civil Supply Minis- ter Ramesh Meena say- ing this will make it clear how many MLAs are with the Ashok Ge- hlot government. Meena, a Pilot loyal- ist, is among the Con- gress legislators who skipped both the Con- gress legislature party meetings on Monday and Tuesday. “Floor test should be conducted in the assembly. This will expose the claim that the Gehlot government has support of 109 MLAs,” Meena said. He, however, refused to say anything further. Congress MLA Deep- endra Singh Shekhawat too had raised the same demanded on Monday. “We want a floor test at the earliest, which will make the situation crys- tal clear. We are with the Congress and Congress (state) president Sachin Pilot,” Singh had told reporters on Monday. The Ashok Gehlot camp has claimed that 109 MLAs, both of Con- gress and others, are in support of the govern- ment. The BJP leaders retweeted the tweets of rebel Congress leaders and came out in their support in poetic tone. BJP MP Diya Kumari backed the MLA from Deeg-Kumher and said, “@vishvendrabtp Hu- kum, your decision to stay on the path of truth is commendable. I wel- come your decision and wish you a bright fu- ture.” Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Kailash Choudhary also raised his voice in the support of ‘rebels’ and said, “The fear of the villain will not last long. You have proved that the youth of today are rich in skills, it is not easy to suppress them.” “It is clear from the tone of the rebellion that the king’s palace has a lot of suffocation,” tweeted Union Jal Shakti Minis- ter Gajendra Singh Shekhawat. Quoting Lord Krish- na from Mahabharat, BJP leader Vasudev Devnani wrote, “Fight- ing for injustice and your rights is para- mount in all religions, even if it is your own family: Shri Krishna (Mahabharata).” IN A RARE FIRST, BJP LEADERS TWEET SUPPORT TO TEAM PILOT! IS THERE A HIDDEN INTENT? New Delhi: Soon after being removed from the posts of Rajasthan Dep- uty CM and Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief, Sachin Pi- lot changed his bio on Twitter and later stated, “Truth can be dis- turbed, not defeated.” Notably, the nameplate of Pilot has also been removed from the par- ty’s state headquarters in Jaipur. Pilot’s new bio on Twitter reads, “MLA from Tonk| Former Minister of IT, Telecom & Corporate affairs,GoI |Commissioned officer Territorial Army”. The senior leader has re- moved earlier bio which mentioned “Deputy CM of Rajasthan and Presi- dent, Rajasthan Con- gress”. In place of Pilot, Ra- jasthan’s Education Minister Govind Singh Dotasrahasbeennamed as the new PCC chief. The decision to remove Pilot was taken after the conclusion of CLP meet at Fairmont Hotel in Jaipur, Rajasthan earli- er today. The Rajasthan Congress is in turmoil over the past few days. I welcome your deci- sion and wish you a bright future. —Diya Kumari, BJP MP Fighting for injustice and your rights is Para- mount in all religions, even if it is your own family: Shri Krishna (Mahabharata). —Vasudev Devnani, BJP Leader From a practising lawyer to PCC chief! Dotasara has come a long way in 15 yrs Yogesh Sharma Jaipur: Once a prac- tising lawyer, Ra- jasthan Education Minister Govind Sin- gh Dotasara’s eleva- tion to the post of the state Congress chief came almost 15 years after he contested his first election to be- come a member of a panchayat samiti in the state. Born on October 1, 1964 in Kriparam ji ki Dhani in Lakshman- garh of Sikar district, 55-year-old Dotasara had started his career at the grassroots level in the party while working as a lawyer. Receiving this eleva- tion, Dotasara ex- pressed his gratitude towards Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi and said that he is hum- bled by the trust party has entrusted in him. “I will work tirelessly to further strengthen the party. I will work keeping in view the emotions of Congress workers who fought hard to bring out gov- ernment in state and will start strategising to bring our govern- ment again in 2023,” Dotasara said. The three-time Con- gress MLA had con- tested the Lakshman- garh pachayat samiti in 2005 before being given the party ticket for the assembly elec- tions three years later. On Tuesday, he was made the state Con- gress president after the removal of Sachin Pilot from the post fol- lowing accusations that he tried to topple the Congress govern- ment in the state as part of a “BJP con- spiracy”. Earlier, he held the post of the Sikar district Con- gress president for seven years. He also worked for the Youth Congress. Dotasara, who comes from a farming family, is known as a Jat leader and the Congress has played its OBC card in appointing him to the high post. In 2008, Dotasara for the first time got the party ticket to contest the assembly elections from the Lakshman- garh constituency, from where he won by a slim margin. Since 2008, he has been continuously winning assembly elec- tions. He was made the state’s education minis- ter after the party’s vic- tory in the 2018 assem- bly polls. Earlier, he held the post of the deputy chief whip of the Con- gress in the 14th Ra- jasthan assembly. Do- tasara has completed BCom and then LLB from Rajasthan Uni- versity. He practised in a Sikar court for al- most two decades. It is worth noting that Govind Singh Dotasara is not just a Gehlot camp nomi- nee to fill in Pilot’s shoes at PCC, but surprisingly, he was Pilot’s own nominee as well. Nearly two months back, Pilot had showed his sup- port to Dotasara, as and when he leaves from the PCC, how- ever, it is nothing short of conspiracy of circumstances that Pilot’s untimely removal has brought Dotasara as ‘Gehlot man’ in the Ra- jasthan PCC. The fear of the villain will not last long. You have proved that the youth of today are rich in skills, it is not easy to suppress them. —Kailash Choudhary, Union Minister It is clear from the tone of the rebel- lion that the king’s palace has a lot of suffocation. —Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Jal Shakti Minister Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot blesses newly appointed PCC chief Govind Singh Dotasara on Tuesday. Pilot changes bio on Twitter, removes Cong from profile! Jaipur: At the Con- gress Legislative Party (CLP) meeting on Tues- day, as many as 102 MLAs unanimously de- manded that Sachin Pi- lot should be removed from the party, said sources. In a few minutes long video, all the MLAs were seen standing on their seats during the meeting and raising their hands to show the unified response for sacking Pilot at the Fairmont Hotel. Earlier on Monday, twenty MLAs, including Depu- ty CM Sachin Pilot, did not attend the Congress Legislature Party meet- ing held at the residence of CM Ashok Gehlot amid the political crisis in the state. The top leadership of the Congress party in- cluding Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Ahmed Patel, P Chidambaram and KC Venugopal have spoken to Pilot several times. 102 MLAs were unanimous on sacking Pilot at CLP meet Sachin Pilot Govind Singh Dotasara, Avinash Pande, KC Venugopal, Randeep Surjewala and Ajay Maken on Tuesday. UNITED COLOURS THAT FADED GRADUALLY! First India Bureau Jaipur: Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot met Gov- ernor Kalraj Mishra on Tuesday. The CM had proposed the governor to remove three minis- ters from his cabinet including deputy chief minister Sachin Pilot, tourism minister Vishv- endra Singh and food & civil supply minister Ramesh Meena. The governor accepted his proposal with immedi- ate effect. Later speaking to the media, Gehlot said that horse trading activities weregoingonforlastsix months. He accused BJP of having hand in it. “This is the first govern- ment after the independ- ence, which has been in- dulging in bringing down elected govern- ments,” he said. However, Gehlot rued that some of his party colleagues played in BJP’s hands. “If they had any issue, they should have aired their grievances on party fo- rum. They had been in- vited twice but did not come,” he said. According to Gehlot, he did not complain against Sachin to party high command, which took the decision when no other option left. TheCMsaidthatmere 30 MLAs can’t split the party. To trigger break, there has to be two-third majority. Never a ruling party member demands floor test. It showed that they were playing in hands of the BJP. Meanwhile, amid the possibility of a reshuffle in ministerial berths, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot convened a Cabi- net meeting on Tuesday evening. After the Cabi- net meeting, another meeting of the entire council of ministers, in- cluding the ministers of state, too was held 8 pm at the Chief Minister’s Residence. Gehlot also handed overalistof 104MLAsto Governor Kalraj Mishra claiming a majority in the state Assembly. The move came after his party sacked Sachin Pilot as the deputy chief minister for his revolt as he skipped the second meeting of MLAs in two days. Two ministers who joined him in his revolt have also been dropped. First India Bureau Jaipur: Even as the po- litical heat of Rajasthan swelters the individuals ‘daring the weather’, CM Ashok Gehlot went to work on Tuesday and held a meeting of the council of ministers. The council, during the meeting, approved the proposal to get the East Rajasthan Canal Project (ERCP), which will pro- vide drinking water to 13 districts till 2051, sanctioned as a National project. Under the ERCP project, surplus water of Chambal river basin is proposed to be dumped in river basins of Banas, Morel, Banganga, Par- vati, Kalisil, Gambhir etc. Moreover, Important decisions were taken re- garding the establish- ment of ‘One Stop Shop’ system for approval of investment proposals of more than Rs 10 crore in state. • 3. RAJASTHANJAIPUR | WEDNESDAY, JULY 15, 2020 03www.firstindia.co.in I www.firstindia.co.in/epaper/ I twitter.com/thefirstindia I facebook.com/thefirstindia I instagram.com/thefirstindia Kartikey Dev Singh Jaipur: Over the past two days, there have been enough commen- taries about the ‘cul- ture and ethics’ in Ra- jasthan politics. For- mer PCC Chief and deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot is being seen as a rebel by cer- tain factions, while there are others who claim that he is a rebel without a cause! How- ever, with the horde of political observers and commentators eschew- ing history, here is one line which, perhaps in the current situation, holds the most mean- ing: History Repeats Itself. There are compa- rable similarities be- tween the current year ie 2020, and the story that played out in 1952. Although there is a gap of 68 years, but two stories could never be more aligned. It was in 1952 when Chief Minister Jainarayan Vyas’s leadership was challenged by a young leader - Mo- hanlal Sukhadiya who rebelled against him for the ‘chair’. Vyas had to fight a ‘bloody’ battle against Sukhadia much like what CM Ashok Gehlot fought against his nemesis Pilot, who claimed that Gehlot govern- ment was in minori- ty. This had forced the Gehlot camp to huddle the MLAs into his side. Yet another similar- ity between the two in- stances is the favourit- ism factor of the cen- tral leadership towards then Chief Minister Vyas and current Chief Minister Gehlot. Interestingly, in 1952, Jawaharlal Nehru was the Prime Minister and had to come out to diffuse the situation, but could not succeed in keeping status-quo. The fight broke out in 1952 after Vyas was sworn in as Chief Min- ister even though he lost the assembly elec- tion and a ‘young’ Sukhadiya took it as bone of contention, thus starting a rebel- lion. Interestingly, just like in those days, this time too Pilot camp feels that in spite of intense hard work being under- taken by Pilot to bring the party to power, it was Gehlot who was given the reins, and this be- came the ‘bone of contention’ between the two camps. When Sukhadiya re- belled, Nehru sent Bal- want Rai to the state capital Jaipur to re- solve the difference be- tween them, much like the same way the Con- gress high command pressed Avinash pan- de, Randeep Surjewala and Ajay Maken to the troubled state. And this is where the ‘historical repeti- tions’ end in this sto- ry. That is so because after Balwant Rai reached Jaipur, he called a meeting of party MLAs who were asked to cast their vote in support of either of the ‘war- ring’ leaders in ‘52, and the battle was won by the ‘young turk’ Sukhadiya, who became the youngest ever Chief Minister of Ra- jasthan. Cut to 2020, when Sachin Pilot rushed to Delhi and refused to come to Jaipur. Probably there could be yet an- other ‘voting’ on sim- ilar pattern and set- tle the score once and for all, but we will never know of what could have been! THE UNCANNY SIMILARITIES OF CONG’S TWO ERAS Mumbai: Attacking the BJP over the political crisis in Rajasthan, the Shiv Sena on Tuesday accused the NDA con- stituent of working to destabilise govern- ments of its opponents and encouraging horse- trading in the state. An editorial in Sena mouthpiece ‘Saamana’ asked BJP what is it go- ing to achieve with this political misadventure in the “desert”, and said such moves will turn the country’s parlia- mentary democracy into a desert. “The central power is working to destabilise (the state) governments of its opponents, the Shiv Sena alleged. The country is facing problems like a corona- virus-triggered collapse of the economy and “Chinese intrusion” in Ladakh. The killings of 20 Indian soldiers in a face-off with Chinese troops in Galwan Valley is still afresh, it said. Instead of solving these issues, the BJP is interfering in the inter- nal bickering of the Congress and “encour- aging horse-trading” in Rajasthan, the Sena al- leged. What is the BJP go- ing to achieve with this political misadventure, by causing a storm in the desert? Such steps will rather turn the par- liamentary democracy into a desert,” the party said. —PTI Jaipur: Rajasthan BJP President Satish Poonia on Tuesday said the party is not demanding floor test in the state as- sembly as of now. Asked about floor test Poonia said, “At pre- sent, we are not de- manding anything. Our priority was to bring forward that it is a cor- rupt government and it did mismanagement in the coronavirus crisis. It has become a weak government. First thing is that this government should go away in the interest of the people of the state.” Amid the ongoing po- litical crisis in Ra- jasthan, opposition BJP leaders on Tuesday met in Jaipur to discuss the current situation in the state. A meeting took place at the BJP state office here in which party na- tional joint general sec- retary V Satish, BJP state president Satish Poonia, leader of oppo- sition Gulab Chand Ka- taria and deputy leader of opposition Rajendra Rathore were present. “The leaders are dis- cussing the current po- litical situation in the state,” the party sourc- es said. “This government’s foundation is weak. Congress has been claiming that their leaders are united but it’s clear that there are internal disputes, be- cause of which, Sachin Pilot had to part from Congress after facing humiliation. When such a thing happens then the government is not able to fulfil the ex- pectations of the people of the state. And then eventually it falls,” he said. “It is the tradition of Congress and this was the reason that Jyotia- ditya Scindia who was in Congress for so many years and had to leave it to join the BJP. The same situation was with Sachin Pilot in Ra- jasthan where he kept the organisation work- ing and when it came to transfer him power then he was neglected and disrespected,” he added. —ANI ‘Notcallingforfloortest, butgovt shouldgoawayinpublicinterest’ Jaipur: Two video clips of Rajasthan’s Bharati- ya Tribal Party MLA RajkumarRoatsurfaced on social media on Tues- day with the leader claiming in one of these that he has been kept like a “hostage” and not allowed to go to his con- stituency. The videos are shot in a car with the MLA oc- cupying the front seat. One of these is purport- edly shot by the MLA himself. It is not clear when it were shot. In the videouploadedonsocial media in the evening, a police inspector is seen taking away keys of his car,withaconstablesay- ing “there is a threat”. In one of the clips, the Chorasi MLA, while re- ferring to the current political crisis in the state, was heard saying that he has been kept like a hostage . The vid- eo was uploaded on re- bel Congress leader Sachin Pilot’s official WhatsApp group. Roat said he has been at the MLA quarters in Jaipur for the past three days where many asked him to come along . He said when he tried to leave, three to four po- lice vehicles came there and did not let him go. He is seen alleging that police vehicles sur- rounded his car and his keys were taken away. He also showed two po- lice vehicles parked aroundhiscar.Congress has counted both BTP MLAs as supporters of the Gehlot government. Editor: Jagdeesh Chandra, responsible for selection of news under the PRB Act was invited for a talk on World Cancer Day, 04 Feb this year at a Medical College in Nepal. Thereafter, me and my friend hadaweek longseriesof events in Nepal. Everywhere, we got a hearty welcome and utmost respect. Nepal’s hospitality was par excellence. Attending the evening aarti at Holy shrine of Pashupathinath ji was divine gift . Never ever did we feel that we were in a different country. I met a young couple at Palpa, Nepal wherein the girl was from New Delhi, India and mar- ried to a Doctor from Nepal. Similarly, large no of Nepalese families are working in India. In Army also, I have fought shoulder to shoulder with Ne- pali origin soldiers. When our Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh says “India aur Nepal mein Roti- Beti ka rishta hai”, I totally concur with him. BROTHERS AND NEIGHBOUR’S DYNAMICS Let me give you a simple story for better understanding. India and Nepal are like two brothers staying together but having separate family affairs. Elder brother (India) is well to do, more prosperous and has re- spect in community as head of thefamily.Youngerbrother(Ne- pal) is not so well off, does farm- ingandagriculturebutishappy and contended. Both have been living happily for ages. Now enters a zamindaar, “Ek Villain” as neighbour (China) who has muscle power and fi- nancial clout with him. He makes friends with younger brother and poisons his mind. He convinces the younger that elder is being unfair and is a hurdle in prosperity of younger one. Thereby, the seeds of ha- tredandjealousyaresown. The neighbor then steps in to offer him soft loan for the business andmortgageshisland, without knowledge of elder brother. When objected by elder brother, he instigates younger one to fight with elder. Both brothers become enemies and start fight- ing at neighbor’s behest. This simile aptly explains the dy- namics of Indo- Nepal and Chi- narelationship, insimpleterms. INDO NEPAL: CHANGING RELATIONS India and Nepal are insepara- bles. Thousands of people in India and Nepal cross the open border every day to work, buy, sell, and transact businesses. Cousins deal with one another across the borders; business as- sociates with sons and daugh- ters married into each other families. Lenders and suppli- ers across offered credit based on mutual trust. Cash also moved easily across the border. The has now become a bound- ary that separates. The trade war between Chi- na and the United States, along with the border skirmishes be- tween China and India, puts Nepal back into the center of regional geopolitical activity. India’s relationship with Nepal is at its lowest point since the five-month “Indian Blockade” of 2015. For Nepal, the biggest change in geopolitics since the September 2015 blockade has been increased Chinese inter- est to provide an economic al- ternative to reliance on India. Border disputes between two countries are another conten- tious issue that occasionally creates friction in bilateral rela- tions. To enhance people-to-peo- ple relations, Nepal and India must resolve contentious issues relating to the border, including the two major areas of dispute at Susta and Kalpani. Nepal understands its eco- nomic dependency on India but time has changed the complex- ion and narrative of India-Ne- pal relations. Instead of old relationships between people and cultures, mutual economic ties have become pivotal to all future relations. India has seen its position erode with growing Chinese investments. CHINA’S POISONING OF MINDS Often dubbed as ‘China Threat 3.0’, the Chinese sharp power in Nepal has come with massive propaganda and national inter- ests with implications for In- dia’s influence in the region. Sharppoweroftenincorporates tactics of pressure and coer- cion as a means to interfere, control and sway decisions of other countries. BRI is certain- ly one such move of China to grow its roots under its expan- sionist tactics across the world. WAY AHEAD India and Nepal must do more than merely resolve border is- sues. They must return to the core strengths of their unique social, cultural, strategic, po- litical, and economic bonds and modernize ties to directly connect its people, markets, fi- nance, and technology. India must work harder in building a pragmatic and realistic part- nership with Nepal. India and Nepal could create modern business hubs that ena- ble young tech-savvy Nepali en- trepreneurs to connect with In- dia’s innovations. It could offer credit lines that small and me- dium enterprises could directly accessforcrossbordertradeand investments. It could harmonize and ease cross border trading rules. Most importantly, it must encourage Indian and Nepali businesses to flourish. India needs to reset its rela- tions with Nepal and re-invent its public diplomacy, rather than micromanaging Nepal, which has only undermined India-Nepal ties. The govern- ments of India and Nepal must revise the narrative, modern- ize their policies, and get out of the way so that the ties between people thrive again. Centuries of social, cultural, political, strategic, and economic ties can only remain strong if they evolve to remain relevant in changing times. INDIA-NEPAL BROTHERS FIGHTING AT NEIGHBOUR’S BEHEST India-Nepal must return to core strengths of their social, cultural, & economic bonds I Nepal understands its economic dependency on India but time has changed the complexion and narrative of India-Nepal relations MAJ GEN C P SINGH, RETD Trade war between China and US, along with the border skirmishes between China and India, puts Nepal back into the center of regional geopolitical activity The author is a scholar soldier accredited with MA, MSc, LLB, MBA, M Phil (Def Mgt) and M Phil (International Strategic Affairs). Widely travelled in India and Abroad, the General Officer is an avid reader and prolific writer. Post retirement, he is a Social Activist, Career Consultant and a Motivational Speaker of repute. fter President Donald Trump said during his June 20 rally in Tulsa, Oklaho- ma, that increased testing was responsible for the surging number of infec- tions, the condemnation of the inaccurate claim was swift. Six days later, during a Fox News town hall, Sean Hannity asked Trump about those remarks on in- creased testing. “Sometimes I jokingly say, or sarcastically say, if we didn’t do tests we would look great,” he replied. This seems to be a pat- tern. Two months earlier, the president had mused about the beneficial effects of injecting disinfectants into the body to combat COVID-19. After many health officials expressed their dismay, Trump re- peatedly claimed that he was just being sarcastic. That same month, after he misspelled “Nobel Prize” in a tweet – writing it out as “Noble Prize” – he deleted the tweet be- fore falling back on on a familiar excuse: sarcasm. What is it about sarcasm that makes it such a con- venient excuse for people who are trying to distance themselves from what they’ve said? As I describe in my recent book on irony and sarcasm, most cogni- tive scientists and other language researchers think of sarcasm as a form of verbal irony. Both ways of speaking involve saying the opposite of what you mean. But the goals of irony and sarcasm are ac- tually different. For example, if someone slowly intones “What beau- tiful weather!” on a cold and rainy day, it’s clear they’re speaking ironically about a disappointing state of affairs. In general, irony is used to provide commen- tary on unexpected and negative outcomes. Sarcasm, on the other hand, is most frequently used to disparage the ac- tions of other people. If someone tells you that you’re a real genius after you forgot to meet them for an important appoint- ment, they clearly don’t mean that you’re mental- ly gifted. Simply put, iro- ny is commentary, but sarcasm is criticism. That seems straightfor- ward enough. But in ac- tual practice, the line be- tween irony and sarcasm is blurry and confusing. Many people assert they are being sarcastic when they are in fact being ironic, as in the previous example of the weather. The enlargement of the domain of sarcasm – at irony’s expense – is a lin- guistic shift that has been going on for some time. In fact, linguist Geoffrey Nun- berg called attention to this phenomenon 20 years ago. So it’s hard to fault the president for conflating the two. Another element that makes sarcasm tricky to grasp has to do with saying the opposite of what is meant. The recipient of such a statement isn’t sup- posed to take it literally. For this reason, when we use verbal irony or sar- casm, we might employ cues to signal our nonlit- eral intent. We may, for ex- ample, speak in a tone of voice that’s slower, lower and louder than how we speak normally. Our pitch may swoop up or down. Ironic statements are also frequently accompanied by facial displays, such as a smirk or the rolling of the eyes. And that’s why, when being sarcastic over text or email, we’ll use emojis to relay nonliteral intent. Of course, even then, there’s no guarantee that the re- cipient will interpret the message correctly. FOR FULL REPORT LOG ON TO WWW.THECONVERSATION.COM ‘Was being sarcastic’ can be convenient excuse A The enlargement of the domain of sarcasm – at irony’s expense – is a linguistic shift that has been going on for some time As for those who believe & do good deeds, these are the dwellers of the garden; in it they shall abide. —Quran 2:82 Spiritual SPEAK Top TWEET Jagat Prakash Nadda @JPNadda Greetings to the brothers and sisters of Tripura on the auspicious occasion of Ker Puja. For Hindus all over the world, Ayodhya lies 135 km from Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh and Ram was born here. There has been a lot of blood-letting and decades of litigation to prove that. Construction of a grand temple is now underway here. PM KP Sharma Oli, however, has given a new twist to Ram and Ayodhya. In a conten- tious claim Oli said, “We still believe we gave Sita to Prince Ram but we gave the prince too, from Ayodhya not India.” Ayodhya Oli was re- ferring to lies in Nepal’s Birbhum district. He also accused India of “cultural oppression”, as opposed to India’s assertion of a long history of religious and cultural ties with the “Hindu Kingdom”. Oli had also blamed India for spread of Covid-19 in Nepal. Ever since Oli’s ascendance as PM, Nepal Communist Party has moved closer to China which is now di- rectly interfering in affairs of the hill state. Just when it appeared that Oli was going to be ousted after a rift, Chinese ambassador Hou Yanqui went around meeting every dissident to ensure that Oli remained in power. Indians have reacted strongly to Nepal’s claims on Ram but Oli is beyond New Delhi’s control. ith 933,450 Covid-19 cases India is third worst hit country after the US and Brazil. With death maintaining a rising trend over last two months, the pandemic presents a scary sce- nario. The government is more upbeat about the recoveries–590,219–than it is about the ris- ing numbers. At 24,281 fatality numbers sug- gest that we are handling patients very well but there’s a growing feeling that with many positive cases going unreported the deaths are not being accounted for. Treatment cost in pri- vate hospitals being too high and government hospitals poorly managed work as a deterrent for many. India recorded over 28,000 new cases in a day and the numbers will touch a new peak on Wednesday. Union Health Ministry asserts that Covid-19 cases have progressively declined daily and re- coveredcaseswere1.8timesnumberof positive cases. Fatality rate which stood at 2.6 per cent was also declining. Covid-19 situation remains alarmingandif theWorldHealthOrganisation is to be believed, it could get “worse and worse and worse” if the basics of social distancing and mask-wearing are not followed. As is seen people are becoming increasingly careless, per- haps out of fatigue. A new dimension has been addedtotheCovidfearwiththeICMRagreeing with WHO on the virus remaining in air for some time. That makes keeping masks on has to be made an important part of one’s attire. H W

Washington: It seems China is not willing to recognise the ultimate sacrifice made by its soldiers for the country as the government is pressuring the families of soldiers who died in Galwan face off to not conduct burials and in- person funeral ceremo- nies, according to a US intelligence assess- ment. The bloody brawl be- tween Chinese and In- dian troops took place on June 15 in which both sides suffered cas- ualties. India, without any hesitation, accept- ed that 20 of its soldiers have been martyred in the clash. They are be- ing hailed as heroes. Prime Minister Naren- dra Modi, during his monthly radio pro- gramme Mann ki Baat on June 28, conveyed condolences to the kin of Army personnel who lost their lives in the Galwan valley clash and said that the sacri- fice of these families is “worth worshipping”. Even after the one month of the incident, China has still not dis- closed how many of its soldiers were killed in the incident. The grieving Chinese families who have lost their loved ones in the clash are being mis- treated by the Chinese government. First, the Chinese government re- fused to accept the casu- alties on its side follow- ing the incident and now it has denied burial of the fallen soldiers. According to the US intelligence assess- ment, China is not ac- cepting that its soldiers have been killed in the showdown in order to cover up an episode that Beijing appears to con- sider a blunder, report- ed the U.S. News. The violent face-off occurred after China at- tempted to unilaterally change the status quo during de-escalation in eastern Ladakh. India has said that the situa- tion could have been avoided if the agree- ment at the higher level been scrupulously fol- lowed by the Chinese side. The Chinese govern- ment has acknowledged the deaths of only a few officers so far. Indian intercepts have re- vealed that the Chinese side suffered 43 casual- ties including the dead and seriously injured. American intelli- gence believes that 35 of the Chinese soldiers were killed in the show- down. This year, only 20 per cent VVIPs or other participants will be able to witness the live speech of Prime Minis- ter Narendra Modi com- pared to previous years. Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar and ASI Direc- tor-General already vis- ited the Red Fort last week to take stock of the preparations. Ku- mar took stock of ar- rangements and also asked the concerned of- ficials to make arrange- ments keeping social distancing in mind. According to sources, there would be a com- plete change this time. While there would no children, cadets of the National Cadet Corps would attend the cele- brations at the Red Fort. Similarly, unlike ear- lier times, VVIPs wouldn’t be able to sit at therampart, fromwhere the prime minister de- livers Independence Day speech. Close to 900 VVIPs used to sit on the top on both sides earlier. But this time, they will have to sit at the lower level, with only around a hundred allowed. More significantly, as many as 1,500 Corona winners, who recovered from the disease, will attend the function. Among, them 500 would be from local police. The other 1,000 would be from different parts of the country. Till last year, at least 10,000 people used to at- tend the function to wit- ness the speech of the prime minister. NEWSJAIPUR | WEDNESDAY, JULY 15, 2020 07www.firstindia.co.in I www.firstindia.co.in/epaper/ I twitter.com/thefirstindia I facebook.com/thefirstindia I instagram.com/thefirstindia First India Bureau Jaipur: Call it COVID 19 impact. Chartered flights have increased compared to regular flights at Jaipur Air- port. Business honchos and senior politicians have been embarking on chartered flights in- stead of regular air- lines. In the last one and half months, 78 char- tered flights have land- ed or took off from Jaipur Airport, which comes to an average of two flights a day.Earlier, chartered flights were rare in the months of June and July. At the max, one chartered flight would take off on a day but it has now doubled. The ongoing political crisis in the state could also have played a role in it. Apart from politi- cians, business honchos have also been using chartered flights. Among the business houses which used chartered flights were Shri Cement, Birla, Re- liance, and some other groups. A chartered flight costs Rs two to three lakh per hour. The only plausible reason for this could be to avoid contact with so many people on a regu- lar flight, which ex- plains that more than two months after regu- lar flights started, there is still no pick up in the number of flyers. No surprise then that the number of flights has not increased. All major airlines in- cluding Indigo, Air Asia, Air India, and Spice Jet had given schedule of 20 flights but only 15 or 16 flights are operational. On average, daily eight to nine flights are getting cancelled. Chartered flights trump regulars ones IN CORONA ERA Aditi Nagar Jaipur: With the poli- tics in Rajasthan reaching its highest cacophony, AICC Gen- eral secretary and Ra- jasthan Incharge Avi- nash Pande, on Tues- day late evening, is- sued notices to the Congress party legis- lators who were ab- sent from the meeting of the legislative p[arty held on Tues- day morning. With the notice being issued, the party has initiatedaformalstepto get the MLAs evicted from the state assembly since Chief Whip Ma- hesh Joshi informed Ra- jasthan Assembly Speaker Dr. CP Joshi aboutthesame.Withthe matter being informed to the state assembly, the official proceedings in the matter will be initi- ated and according to the procedure, Speaker Joshi will issue notice to these MLAs to appear before him within the next two days, from the time of issuance of no- tice. Knowledgeable sources claim that the MLAs will have to ap- pear before the Speaker personally and answer for their non-compli- ance to party line by re- maining absent for the twoCLPmeetingscalled in the last two days. If the members fail to provide a satisfactory answer, the Speaker can then take the most se- vere action against these men and cancel their membership to the state assembly. Sources in know-how of the de- velopment claim that through this, bypolls could be announced in the constituencies the MLAs of which have been removed from the state assembly. Earlier in the day, Pande took to twitter to firstissueappealtoPilot and his camp to attend the party meet and later used the same platform to announce that they have been removed from the ministership. Pande tweeted, “I appeal to Sachin Pilot and to all his fellow MLAs to at- tend today’s meeting of the legislature party. Ex- pressing your faith in the ideology and values of the Congress, please make your presence felt and strengthen the hands of Mrs. Sonia Gandhi and Mr. Rahul Gandhi.” However, the senior Congress leader then took a jibe at Pilot’s tweet that ‘Truth can not be defeated, only withheld” and said, “True words @Sachin- Pilot. You along with BJP troubled Truth a lot but could not defeat it, neither will be able to do so ahead. Satyamev Jay- ate.” Late in the evening, when the Congress an- nounced three Presi- dents for PCC, Youth Congress, and Sewa Dal, Pande tweeted, “I hope the three newly appoint- ed presidents will work for the strengthening of the organization, follow- ing the party’s values.” PANDE SETS THE BALL ROLLING FOR ‘EVICTION’ OF ‘ABSENT’ MLAs Corona cases cross 25K-mark in state with Jodhpur on top I-T raids continue unabated on day two in several districts Rajputs up in arms over syllabus ‘gaffe’ Womanstrangulated todeathinKotahome First India Bureau Jaipur: Coronavirus crossed the 25,000-mark by a record surge of 635 new corona positives taking the toll to 25,571 along with 6 deaths. • 9. To be happy and to live, we have to stop searching for what happiness consists of and meaning of life- we have to be happy and live. —Jagdeesh Chandra, CEO & Editor, First India JAIPUR | WEDNESDAY, JULY 15, 2020www.firstindia.co.in I www.firstindia.co.in/epaper/ I twitter.com/thefirstindia I facebook.com/thefirstindia I instagram.com/thefirstindia 08 2NDFRONTPOSTAL REG NO. JPC/010/2019-21 Cong endorses astute Gehlot, CM safe for now; Sachin crashlands on Cong turf, but Pilot may sore with new front! z How do you see the power tussle between CM Ashok Gehlot and Ex- Deputy CM & PCC Chief Sachin Pi- lot ? What was the background to this battle ? Jagdeesh Chandra: Time is the most pow- erful entity, as it can turn a filthy rich into a pauper in minutes. Considering the ground reality that Sachin Pilot is former Deputy CM and PCC chief today, has a back- ground, which dates back to 2018 assembly elections and the battle to become CM. Pilot un- der some good faith ei- ther self nurtured or propelled by somebody, believed that neither he or Gehlot will con- test the 2018 elections and the High Command will ultimately appoint him as the CM after the elections. But seasoned Gehlot’s suo motto de- cision to contest elec- tion from Jodhpur forced him to contest as well. Both became MLAs and in a natural & democratic show of strength in legislative meeting, Pilot lost to Gehlot by 79-21, which even Rahul Gandhi couldn’t refuse. Gehlot is undisputed master- mind of garnering MLA support in a legis- lative game. This start- ed the trust deficit, which didn’t let the power sharing formula work between Gehlot and Pilot all through- out one and a half year tenure of the govt and finally, has this day in front of all. z What will be the impact of this deci- sion on Pilot and his camp, BJP and its central leadership ? Was decision made too soon or too late? Although Gehlot is known for his slow and well- thought deci- sions, but this time, state incharge, Avi- nash Pande helped & insisted on ruthless and effective decision. The impact of the deci- sion on Gehlot camp is of fear & respect for their disciplinarian Chief Minister who is backed by the High Command. This has apart from other things forced the fence sitters, who might have opted for Manesar hospitali- ty, in maintaining sta- tus quo at least for now. There are two reac- tions from the Pilot camp, first of losing out on the parent body, Congress they were af- filiated to and second is of no regrets as the battle lines have been drawn clear now. Even Pilot has a clear pic- ture that these are my men standing with me in the battle ahead. The impact on BJP is also clear that they are a step closer to their ultimate aim of unset- tling another govt of opposition. All the re- actions by BJP leaders after Pilot’s expulsion, point in one direction that they both are natu- ral allies now onwards. Lastly, the Congress High Command must be feeling low with un- ceremonious exit of a young leader whom they themselves had groomed. So it isn’t a good day for Congress. z How do you rate se- lection of Govind Singh Dotasara as PCC Chief ? First of all look at the conspiracy of circum- stances, Dotasara’s name for next PCC Chief was first for- warded by Sachin Pilot himself two months ago. By far, he is the best choice from the existing Jat leader- ship. He is a grass roots worker, been elected thrice and has performed well as edu- cation minister. An- other interesting as- pect is that the chiefs of both state Congress and BJP now are Jats from Shekhawati cre- ating an interesting situation. z Most media reports say there was no com- munication between Pilot and Gandhi family so much so that Pilot himself wasn’t interested in any communication with them. Do you feel all doors of com- munication between Pilot and Congress have been shut? Yes, all doors have been shutandhehasbeenvir- tually expelled from the party by removing him from all responsibilities. Apart from the main stream media reports, there was a word that Gandhi family was in communication with Pi- lot via second rank lead- ership. In any case, he had gone too far to a pointof noreturnwitha profound thought. Now the fact is that he and BJP are natural allies. z According some re- ports Pilot has put three conditions for his return to the par- ty. How true is that? That came to me as well that the first condition was that he be made the CM, may be at a later date, but with immedi- ate public announce- ment. This shows the level of trust he had on the High Command. Second was to replace state in-charge Avinash Pande with someone of his choice. The third condition was to give him Home and Finance portfolios apart from fulfilling his quota of 8-10 ministers. But the third condition was ir- relevant in light of the demand to become the CM. So, all three condi- tions could not be met due to hard ground re- alities. z Does the recently concluded Rajya Sab- ha elections also con- tributed to the bitter- ness between Gehlot and Pilot? And Do you feel that Pilot was painted as a vil- lain by showing him aligning with the BJP in the Rajya Sabha elections? This is a fact that some of the self- styled Pilot supporters were in- volved in the horse trading attempts in the run up to the upper house elections. Al- though Pilot himself had nothing to do with it but when you pre- sent such a case sce- nario in front of Con- gress High Command along with the version of BJP attempts to pull down Gehlot govt, then the over all picture that emerges is the one that shows both Pilot and BJP working to- wards same end and hence Pilot emerged as a villain. When Pilot presented his case in Delhi, he said that there was no threat to Gehlot govt and the whole exercise was done to project Gehlot as the sole person ca- pable of keeping the required votes togeth- er for assured Con- gress victory in the Rajya Sabha elections, which sidelined and damaged Sachin Pi- lot’s credibility & in- tegrity. z Was the complaint registered by CM con- fidante Chief Whip Dr Mahesh Joshi with SOG part of this strategy ? Naturally, it was part of the strategy after the state govt got con- vinced of the attempts of horse trading & poaching to topple the Gehlot govt, which re- sulted in complaint by Mahesh Joshi with SOG later also taken up by the ACB. Later events prove that there was certainly something happening on the ground related to horse trading & poaching. z Some senior Con- gressmen in Delhi feel that the FIR step was an action taken in haste. What do you feel? This impression was created by anti- Gehlot lobby in Delhi that it was a hastily taken de- cision as it deserved a bit delayed response. Now these are all advi- sory in nature and real analysis is done by the one, who is facing the heat in the field. He knows best. Then this could also be retaliato- ry action taken by Pilot camp in Delhi. Remem- ber normally this is not Gehlot’s style of func- tioning as he keeps po- litical affairs strictly political. But this time, he felt that the situa- tion needed a legal remedy so he gave a go ahead for filing the complaint. z Do you see any chances of change in State Govt in near fu- ture? Will Pilot camp with BJP’s support be able to topple Ge- hlot? Politics is game of pos- sibilities, so nobody can predict exact ten- ure of any Chief Minis- ter however powerful. Now, the dam has a leak, so all depends on how you deal with this leak in the dam. But yes the action taken by the Congress has miti- gated any immediate threat to the govt. Ge- hlot has definitely con- solidated for a couple of months to come. One very important aspect is that now Gehlot is not against Pilot alone, but also has to confront those powers from Del- hi, who have so far nev- er failed in their plans. z Do you think that Pilot is being remote controlled by BJP? Sachin Pilot is too smart, alert, politically savvy and educated to be remote controlled by anybody. But what is sure is that he is in close coordination with the BJP for quite some time now. Even Modi and Amit Shah have a liking for Pilot for rea- sons other than politi- cal like they consider him young, smart, edu- cated and clean image who can be part of their party and circum- stances are making the situation possible. Any- ways Pilot has chosen a track so let’s see. z What will Pilot do join BJP, form third front or opt for his new party? This is a million dollar question in the current scenario. There are two options in front of him. First is the closest to his heart is to form a third front as he has his apprehensions regard- ing ultimate treatment meted out to Scindia in form of the portfolio al- lotted etc. He doesn’t want to completely rely on BJP for his political career. Now forming the third front may have some legal com- plications, but that all will be part of the fu- ture so let’s assume that he will opt for the third front ultimately. z What exactly is the deal which Pilot has struck with the BJP? The most motivating or inspiring factor for Pi- lot is to become the Chief Minister by top- pling Ashok Gehlot. Pilot will take anybody and everybody, who can help in realising this goal. The deal which BJP and Pilot have struck is that Pilot will form the third front, topple the Gehlot govt with support from BJP, become the Chief Min- ister for six months and then hand over the reigns to Gajendra Sin- gh Shekhawat. Pilot has now become a seri- ous threat in combina- tion with the unknown forces of the BJP in Delhi. It might take time, but a liquidation process has begun, which definitely isn’t good for the state or good governance or the interests of the com- mon people. z What are the pros- pects of Operation Lotus in Rajasthan? It is a well-defined mod- el. They do what they commit. In MP, the BJP leadership has fulfilled some of its promises to the people, who joined with Scindia. Rest of the promises will also be fulfilled with time like election tickets from their constituen- cies or other political appointments. In Ra- jasthan, the success de- pends upon how far does CM Gehlot allow them to penetrate be- cause they need 30-32 MLAs. If Gehlot is able to stop his MLAs from poaching then good otherwise, their model is perfect in today’s politics. z How do you see the Vasundhara factor in present circumstanc- es? She is currently silent and enjoying the bliss of Dholpur, reading books, which she is fond of and admiring nature. She is in con- stant touch with the party workers through the phone. She is ex- pected to be in Jaipur on Wednesday, but there is no opportunity to strike right now. Any opportunity only seems to be coming in 2023, when she might find a divided Con- gress house at the end of its tenure or as the current graph of Ge- hlot govt suggests, Ge- hlot might surprising- ly repeat. Now let’s as- sume BJP game plan with Pilot successfully toppling Gehlot govt. Now when Pilot relin- quishes the CM throne after a committed 6 months’ period and ‘IF’ Gajendra Shekha- wat is about to be sworn as CM, what Vasundhara Raje does in those preceding 48 hours, is to be seen. z How do you com- pare the popularity graphs of Ashok Ge- hlot and Sachin Pi- lot? There are different models of individual popularity of political leaders. Once Ashok Gehlot, after losing election, went to a hotel for dinner. There were almost 150-200 people waiting to welcome him in the night de- spite his defeat while he himself expected only 5-6 persons. Ac- cording to me, Ashok Gehlot is the most pop- ular person in Con- gress in the state. No- body comes near him. Then you have Vasund- hara Raje. Be it Gajen- dra Shekhawat, Rajen- dra Rathore or Satish Poonia or for that mat- ter anybody in BJP, she has maximum appeal amongst people in all the BJP leaders. After Gehlot and Raje, Pilot is the new emerging third most popular face in the state, irrespec- tive of the face whether he is from Progressive Congress, Third front or BJP. I have myself witnessed his clout among the crowd dur- ing the election cam- paign during the last assembly elections. A crowd of 3000-4000 was really enthusiastic to listen to him. z How do you see the role played by senior Congress leaders like Ahmed Patel, KC Venugopal, Randeep Surjewala, Avinash Pande, Ajay Makan and Vivek Bansal in the whole crisis? Only two names are really relevant out of the lot you men- tioned. Ahmed Patel and Avinash Pande. Surjewala too was ac- tive but he was more of ‘special appear- ance’. But leaders like Ahmed Patel and Avinash Pande keep constant touch. In fact the Avinsh Pande stamp in the action taken on dissidents is clearly visible. The kind of decisive ac- tion which he and Ge- hlot took is not ex- pected in Rajasthan.
