IN-DEPTH
TRUMP’S REMARK
MAKES AMERICA’S
FUTURE LOOK SCARY
t is disconcerting to witness any public figure
resorting to divisive rhetoric that draws par-
allels with dark chapters of history. Donald
Trump’s recent statement, suggesting that “immi-
grants are poisoning our blood,”evokes haunting
echoes of Hitler’s reprehensible rhetoric that led to
the genocide of thousands of Jews during the Holo-
caust. That Trump is leading President Joe Biden in
opinion polls by a wide margin makes the statement
deeply concerning.
Such inflammatory language not only lacks a fac-
tual basis but also perpetuates harmful stereotypes,
fostering an environment of fear and hatred. Drawing
parallels to historical atrocities serves as a stark re-
minder of the responsibility that comes with holding
influential platforms. In a world striving for unity and
understanding, leaders must choose their words wise-
ly, steering clear of rhetoric that has caused immeasur-
able pain and suffering in the past.Trump’s words risk
deepening divisions rather than fostering the inclusiv-
ity and empathy needed for a harmonious society. But
Trump is known for his outrageous remarks.
I
NO, MR MUSK, DEI
IS NOT PROPAGANDA
n contemporary discourse, the terms “diver-
sity,” “equity” and “inclusion,” are often
dismissed as mere propaganda, devoid of
substantive impact. Critics like Elon Musk argue that
these words have become buzzwords employed for
virtue signalling rather than effecting meaningful
change. While it is true that the overuse of these
terms in various contexts has diluted their signifi-
cance, it is essential to recognize the underlying im-
portance of these modern-day terms.
Inclusion, at its core, advocates for the involve-
ment and empowerment of all individuals, irrespec-
tive of differences based on colour, culture and creed.
Diversity acknowledges the richness that arises from
a variety of perspec-
tives, experiences,
and backgrounds.
Equity, in turn, em-
phasizes fairness and
impartiality in the
treatment of individ-
uals, accounting for
diverse circumstanc-
es. When it comes to
lack of equity in
workplaces women
form the biggest dis-
advantaged group.
Musk may view
these concepts as
empty rhetoric, but
their essence lies in
the actions they in-
spire. Genuine efforts
to foster inclusion,
diversity, and equity result in workplaces and com-
munities that thrive on a multitude of voices, fostering
innovation and understanding. Labelling these prin-
ciples as propaganda dismisses the genuine strides
made by organisations and societies in creating envi-
ronments where everyone feels relevant and valued.
One may point to the overuse of the terms “inclu-
sion,” “diversity,” and “equity” in certain contexts,
but it is crucial to separate rhetoric from action. Em-
bracing these principles authentically, as is being
done in several countries, can lead to positive trans-
formations and challenge the notion voiced by the
Tesla boss that they are mere propaganda words.

he true sign
of intelli-
gence is not
knowledge
but imagina-
tion. Artificial Intelligence
(AI) is no longer confined
to the realms of science fic-
tion; it is a transformative
reality that is shaping our
world in profound ways.
From small-time shop-
keepers to professionals,
homemakers, farmers,
governments, and large
manufacturing companies,
AI is leaving its mark
across various sectors of
society. We have to be con-
scious of the fact that now
machines can think (hu-
man trait) and this seem-
ingly small thing can have
an everlasting impact. The
purpose of human intelli-
gence is to combine a range
of cognitive activities to
adapt to new circumstanc-
es. The goal of artificial
intelligence (AI) is to cre-
ate computers that can be-
have like humans and com-
plete jobs that humans
would normally do.
SMALL SHOPKEEPERS
Small-time shopkeepers are
finding new opportunities
and efficiencies throughAI-
driven technologies. Ac-
cording to a study by De-
loitte,81%ofsmallretailers
believe thatAI and machine
learning have the potential
to enhance customer expe-
riences. AI-driven Shop-
ping and checkout-free
technology will be trans-
forming the shopping expe-
rience. We will witness a
no-human-touch shopping
experience. Small shops
can also benefit fromAI in-
ventory management sys-
tems, which analyze sales
data predict sales, and auto-
matically restock items.
PROFESSIONALS
ON THE JOB
Professionals across vari-
ous industries are experi-
encing significant improve-
ments in productivity and
decision-making thanks to
AI. For instance, IBM’s
Watson Health uses AI to
assist doctors in diagnosing
diseases, achieving a 96%
accuracy rate in certain
cases. In the legal sector,
ROSS, anAI-powered legal
research tool, has reduced
research time by up to 30%,
enabling lawyers to serve
clients more efficiently.
Xgenplus email platform
allows users to compose
email with AI by giving
simple prompts and get the
whole email written auto-
matically.
HOMEMAKERS
AI is becoming an integral
part of our homes, enhanc-
ing convenience and effi-
ciency. Approximately
31% of U.S. households
use smart speakers, ac-
cording to Statista. Virtual
assistants like Google
Home, AI Pin, Siri, and
Alexa can manage tasks
and answer questions.
Meanwhile, Nest Learning
Thermostats, equipped
with AI, have saved users
up to 15% on cooling and
10-12% on heating costs.
AI-powered appliances,
such as smart refrigerators,
adapt to usage patterns,
minimizing energy con-
sumption. Soon we will
witness automatic temper-
ature settings based on the
time of the year and person
available in the room, as
with time these machines
will learn the behaviour
and predict accurately. A
good example could beAC
automatically switching to
heater mode at 24-degree
temperature as soon as
winter starts.
FARMERS
AI is revolutionizing agri-
culture by making farming
practices more data-driv-
en. According to a report
by Markets and Markets,
the precision farming mar-
ket is expected to reach
$12.9 billion by 2025. AI-
driven drones and sensors
monitor crop health, and
John Deere’sAI-enhanced
tractors can autonomously
plant, weed, and harvest
crops. This technology
not only increases yields
but also reduces resource
usage, making farming
more sustainable. AI-
powered drones and satel-
lites can monitor crop
health by analyzing data
on temperature, moisture
levels, and nutrient con-
tent in real time.
GOVERNMENT
Governments are leverag-
ing AI to improve public
services and decision-mak-
ing. For example, the State
of California saved over $9
million in fraudulent un-
employment claims using
AI-driven fraud detection
systems. AI traffic man-
agement systems in Singa-
pore have reduced traffic
jams by 25%, saving com-
muters 1.5 million hours of
travel time annually. Ad-
ditionally, AI in law en-
forcement, such as facial
recognition, has helped
identify criminals more ef-
ficiently. We recently wit-
nessed real-time transla-
tion of our Hon’ble PM’s
speech in multiple Indian
languages through the
Bhashni platform, showing
the high impact of AI
where language barriers
are being broken.
MANUFACTURING
COMPANIES
The manufacturing indus-
try is being transformed
by AI, with profound im-
pacts on efficiency and
quality. According to the
Boston Consulting Group,
AI could add up to $15.7
trillion to the global econ-
omy by 2030, with manu-
facturing being a signifi-
cant contributor. Compa-
nies like Tesla have de-
ployed AI-powered robots
in their factories, increas-
ing production rates and
product quality. Predictive
maintenance with AI has
led to a 20-50% reduction
in unplanned downtime
across various industries.
AI-powered robots can
work alongside human
employees, improving
productivity and handling
repetitive or dangerous
tasks. We could save hu-
man life and avoid inci-
dences where human life
gets trapped in manholes
or tunnels or mines.
CONCLUSION
AI’s influence on our lives
and society is indisputable,
and the numbers and exam-
ples speak for themselves.
From enhancing customer
experiences in small shops
to diagnosing diseases with
remarkable accuracy, im-
proving energy efficiency
in our homes, and revolu-
tionizing farming and man-
ufacturing, AI is at the
heart of these transforma-
tive changes.

New Delhi: The Congress Monday reacted strongly
to the suspension of Opposition MPs in Parliament,
claiming the government has reached an extreme
level of dictatorship and was crushing dissent as it wants
to “bulldoze” important legislations without any debate.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said all democratic
norms have been thrown into the dustbin by this “autocratic”
government and it has shown zero accountability
towards Parliament. “First, intruders attacked
Parliament. Then Modi government attacking
Parliament and Democracy. All Democratic
norms are being thrown into the dustbin by an
autocratic Modi Government by suspending
47 MPs,” he said in a post on X. “We have
two simple and genuine demands – The
Union Home Minister should make a
statement in both Houses of Parlia-
ment on the inexcusable breach in the
Parliament security,” Kharge said.
New Delhi: The Congress on Monday said Parlia-
ment is getting adjourned repeatedly as Home
Minister Amit Shah refuses to make a statement on
the Lok Sabha security breach issue which is his duty and
responsibility. INDIA parties are demanding a statement
from the Home Minister in both Houses on the shocking inci-

the BJP.
She also dismissed

INDIAN PREMIER LEAGUE AUCTION STRATEGY
Whatkindofplayerswill
teamsbidforwhy?
HERE IS A LOOK AT POSSIBLE AUCTION STRATEGY FOR TEAMS
CHENNAI SUPER KINGS
Potential Players of Interest: Shardul Thakur, Manish
Pandey, Josh Hazlewood
Shardul Thakur was earlier with
CSK and is a seasoned Indian
campaigner, who can bowl at death and
chance his arms coming in at No. 8.
CSK could go up to Rs 10 crore and upwards for Shardul.
They would look at an Indian batter to replace Ambati
Rayudu and may look at Manish Pandey for bargain buy
as there aren’t too many experienced Indians listed.
Purse Left

GUJARAT TITANS
Potential Players of Interest: Shardul Thakur, Rachin
Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, Azmatullah Omarzai
Whatever they do, even Gujarat
Titans fans would agree that
there can’t be a replacement of Hardik
Pandya as a whole package. Shardul
Thakur at best would be a 50 to 60 percent replacement.
Rachin Ravindra could be a choice but then Wriddhiman
Saha, Shubman Gill and B Sai Sudharsan will take first
three spots in batting order.
Purse Left
`38.15 cr
LUCKNOW SUPER GIANTS
Potential Players of Interest: Gerald Coetzee, Dilshan
Madushanka, Ashutosh Sharma
LSG would look at another quality
fast bowling option apart from Mark
Wood. Starc, Hazlewood and South
African Gerald Coetzee are three
options readily available. Among left-arm pacer, there
is Nandre Burger and Dilshan Madushanka. Among
uncapped Indian batters, there is Railwayman Ashutosh
Sharma, who scored 12-ball-50 in SMAT.
Purse Left
`13.15 cr
PUNJAB KINGS
Potential Players of Interest: Shardul, Harshal,
Rachin Ravindra
Punjab Kings have two overseas
slots left and if they follow their old
trend of going for the flavour of the
season, then Rachin Ravindra could
be a potential pick and they have the money to go the
distance for the Kiwi. However what they need urgently is
a quality Indian pacer and the three options are Harshal,
Shardul and Umesh Yadav.
Purse Left
`29.10 cr
KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERS
Potential Players of Interest: Mitchell Starc, Pat
Cummins, Rachin Ravindra, Harshal Patel
What KKR needs immediately
is a couple of good pace
bowlers, preferably one among
Australia’s Mitchell Starc, Pat
Cummins or Jos Hazlewood along with Harshal
Patel, who is always a handy option.
Purse Left

DELHI CAPITALS
Potential Players of Interest: Priyansh Arya, Harshal
Patel, Shardul Thakur, Jos Inglis, Wanindu Hasaranga
Delhi Capitals’ weakest link is their
Indian collection of batters and
poor is under-statement for the kind
of assortment they have got. Delhi
state team opener Priyansh Arya, who played some
whirlwind knocks during the SMAT T20, and 2 unknown
but highly talked-about youngsters from UP -- Sameer
Rizvi and Swastik Chikkara could be keenly watched.

SUNRISERS HYDERABAD
Potential Players of Interest: Anyone and everyone
With not many Indian players
in the roster, Shardul and
Harshal could well be their choice
too and they can bid deep. But
they would need at least one good foreign pacer and
one more top-order batter - preferably Indian.

MUMBAI INDIANS
Potential Players of Interest: Hasaranga, Manav
Suthar, Ashutosh Sharma, Darshan Misal
MI doesn’t have too much
money but its scout will
make a bargain buy in terms of
uncapped Indian players. Left-arm
spinner Manav Suthar has made quite an impression
and was also part of MI’s talent development squad.
In terms of foreign spinners, there is Wanindu
Hasaranga.

ROYAL CHALLENGERS BENGALURU
Potential Players of Interest: Starc, Cummins,
Manav Suthar
RCB freed Rs 10.75 crore paid
to Harshal Patel in order to bid
for a overseas pacer and the three
Australian pacers will be much in
demand. With Mo Bobat joining the RCB ranks, it will
be interesting to see if Englishmen Gus Atkinson or
Reece Topley get good bids.
Purse Left
`23.25 cr
RAJASTHAN ROYALS
Potential Players of Interest: Mainly domestic Indian
batters like Sameer Rizvi, Swastik Chikkara, Ashutosh
Sharma, Abhimanyu Singh, Saurabh Chauhan
Royals have always had a good
clutch of youngsters picked
from domestic tournaments and
rigorous trials. All those who have
performed in Syed Mushtaq Ali, TNPL, UP Premier
League will have a good chance of getting deals.
Purse Left

The mini auctions of IPL

Indian talent. There
could be some eye-
popping deals for
players, who would have
struggled otherwise to
attract attention in the
mega auction.

TRADITION CHANGED: THIS TIME PRO-TEM
SPEAKER APPOINTED FROM RULING PARTY
Kalicharan Saraf, the senior most MLA of the
16th Assembly, has been sworn in as the pro-
tem Speaker. It is worth mentioning here that
after several decades, a ruling party MLA has been
made pro- tem Speaker in the Assembly. For the last
25 years, the senior most MLAs of the Opposition
were made pro- tem Speakers, but this time the long
standing tradition has been changed and a ruling
party MLA has been made pro-tem Speaker.
FIRST SESSION OF 16TH RAJASTHAN
ASSEMBLY LIKELY ON DECEMBER 20
The inaugural session of 16th Assem-
bly might commence on Wednesday,
December 20, and is expected to
continue for two days. Following the recent
Assembly elections on 199 out of 200 seats,
198 newly-elected MLAs will be administered
the oath of office as per the Constitution dur-
ing this session. The election for the Karanpur
seat was postponed due to the demise of the
Congress candidate. On the second day of
the Assembly session, the new Speaker will
be elected and BJP has nominated Vasudev
Devnani for the position. With over 120 MLAs
supporting the BJP, Devnani is set to be
elected as the Speaker. However, in adher-
ence to Assembly traditions, the BJP will
engage in dialogue with opposition parties,
aiming to foster consensus. Pankaj Soni

hina, with its vast his-
tory and diverse cul-
tural landscape, boasts
a treasure trove of tradi-
tional attire that reflects
the country’s rich herit-
age and intricate craftsmanship. From
the flowing silks of the Hanfu to the
vibrant hues of the Qipao, Chinese tra-
ditional clothing stands as a testament
to the artistry and symbolism woven
into the fabric of the nation.
The Hanfu, originating from the Han
Dynasty, is a traditional ensemble cel-
ebrated for its timeless elegance. Char-
acterized by loose-fitting robes and in-
tricate sleeve designs, the Hanfu cap-
tures the grace and poise of classical
Chinese aesthetics. Its revival in mod-
ern times reflects a renewed apprecia-
tion for cultural heritage, with enthusi-
asts donning these garments to connect
with China’s historical roots.
The Qipao, also known as the
Cheongsam, has become an iconic rep-
resentation of Chinese fashion. Origi-
nating in the 1920s Shanghai, this
form-fitting dress accentuates the fe-
male form with high collars, floral pat-
terns, and intricate embroidery.
Chinese traditional attire is steeped
in symbolism,
with colours and
motifs conveying
deeper meanings.
Red, symbolizing
good fortune and joy,
is often worn during
celebrations and wed-
dings. Dragon and phoe-
nix patterns, representing
masculinity and feminin-
ity, are frequently incorpo-
rated into wedding gar-
ments, emphasizing the har-
monious union of opposites.
In recent years, there has
been a resurgence of interest in
traditional Chinese attire, not only with-
in the country but also on the global
stage. Designers and fashion enthusiasts
alike are exploring innovative ways to
blend traditional elements with contem-
poraryaesthetics.Thisrevivalrepresents
a dynamic fusion of the old and the new,
ensuring that Chinese traditional attire
remains a living, evolving art form.
The embrace of traditional attire goes
beyond aesthetics it is a form of cultural
preservation and a source of national
pride. Festivals, weddings, and impor-
tant ceremonies often see individuals
proudly donning traditional garments.
Chinese traditional attire serves as a
visual chronicle of the nation’s history,
diversity, and artistic excellence. With
its timeless elegance and profound
symbolism, these garments not only
reflect the beauty of China.
Chinese traditional dress, a captivating blend
of history, symbolism and craftsmanship
holds a unique place. City First brings to you

morning
face the
same di-
lemmas.
Whether I should wake
up my wife with a kiss or
let her sleep longer.
Should I get out of bed or
just press the snooze but-
ton? And that is even be-
fore I have had my first
cup of coffee. Our daily
life is rife with so-called
trivial decisions. People
often feel silly for over-
thinking low-stakes deci-
sions but research has
shown there are logical
reasons for feeling this
way. Understanding why
you feel so stressed by
smaller decisions can
help you learn what to do
about it.
First, sometimes the
sheer number of options
overwhelms us, as we find
it difficult to compare and
contrast the options. Eco-
nomics scholars long
championed the notion
thatit’sbettertohavemore
choices. But in 2000, US
psychologists Sheena
Iyengar and Mark Leeper
challenged this idea.
In one of their studies,
they set up a jam-testing
table at a supermarket.
Far more consumers
bought a jam when they
were given fewer options.
Almost a third (30%) of
customers went on to buy
a jam when the stall had
six flavours yet only 3%
of customers bought jam
when there were 24 fla-
vours.
Drawing on these find-
ings, US psychologist
Barry Schwartz’s book
The Paradox of Choice:
Why More is Less, argues
an abundance of choices
can cause people anxiety.
People often lack, or
believe they lack the ex-
pertise to properly assess
their options. For exam-
ple, when dealing with a
financial decision.And if
you have goals, a lack of
certainty about how rig-
idly you want to stick to
them is probably going to
give you a headache. A
vague goal to “start sav-
ing more” isn’t going to
give you clarity when a
friend suggests going out
for food and your belly is
rumbling.
Also, some of the deci-
sions we label trivial may
have emotional high
stakes.
IT’S YOUR
PERSONALITY
Another line of re-
search has focused
on the link be-
tween people’s
decision strate-
gies and well-
being. Re-
searchers have
identified two
main decision-
making strate-
gies: Maximising
and satisficing.
Maximising is a tendency
to try and find the best op-
tion. Satisficing, a term
introduced by Nobel
prize winner Herbert Si-
mon, is a strategy that
terminates once an ac-
ceptable option is found.
Maximising and satisfy-
ing have been linked to
personality traits. Some
people tend to maximise
and
others who are more sat-
isficers.
Schwartz and his col-
leagues found a negative
relationship between a
tendency to maximise
and feelings of life satis-
faction. Maximisers
(compared with satisfic-
ers) were also more likely
to experience post-deci-
sion regret. One explana-
tion is that maximisers
are always brooding
about what
they could have done and
how they could have
made a better deci-
sion.
To be clear, the
study did not ex-
amine major life
decisions about
marriage or
health but fo-
cused on every-
day decisions (al-
though similar find-
ings have been report-
ed about more serious
medical decisions).
MAKE A HABIT OF IT
Decisionscanbementally
exhausting. So sometimes
everyday choices feel
hard because you have
decision fatigue.
William James, one of
the greatest thinkers of
the 19th and 20th centu-
ries, suggested habits
help us cope with these
complexities. Habits take
away the need to think.
Investing your time in
building habits can stop
you from ruminating on
everyday decisions.
William James’ in-
sights have inspired many
contemporary research-
ers. One idea popularised
by psychologist Daniel
Kahneman’s book,Think-
ing, Fast and Slow, is the
notionthatweusetwodif-
ferent information pro-
cessing mechanisms, sys-
tem one and system two.
System one is uncon-
scious, fast, and intuitive.
It requires little effort.
System two is purposeful
thinking.Waking up at the
same time every morning,
kissing my wife and then
making coffee has be-
come a habit that has
helped me avoid thinking
too much about these ac-
tivities. I let my system
take charge as much as I
can, at least until I have
my first cup of coffee.
US writer Merlin Mann
said, “Thinking can be the
enemy of action”. While I
am not sure I would agree,
his words do resonate
with many findings from
psychology.
Herbert Simon devel-
oped the idea of satisfic-
ing because he believed
humans have limited cog-
nitive and other capacities
(such as memory and at-
tention). Thinking too
much — for example,
whether to exercise today
or not — can be stressful
and frustrate the intention
to do so.
You have to decide how
to invest your resources
(whether they are cogni-
tive, emotional, or physi-
cal). Investing them in
thinking about exercising
can consume the energy
youneedtoexercise.When
it comes to our daily deci-
sions,reducingthenumber
of options can also help
easetheprocess.Appleco-
founder Steve Jobs was
well known for wearing
similaroutfitsalmostevery
day(jeansandaturtleneck
or a T-shirt) partly to sim-
plify the decision process.
It’s about accepting
you have limited “deci-
sion-making juice” and
being conscious about
how you use it. Reducing
choices, developing good
habits, and letting our so-
called system take charge
can help us face our daily
decisions.

Smriti Z Irani @smritiirani IN-DEPTH TRUMP’S REMARK MAKES AMERICA’S FUTURE LOOK SCARY t is disconcerting to witness any public figure resorting to divisive rhetoric that draws par- allels with dark chapters of history. Donald Trump’s recent statement, suggesting that “immi- grants are poisoning our blood,”evokes haunting echoes of Hitler’s reprehensible rhetoric that led to the genocide of thousands of Jews during the Holo- caust. That Trump is leading President Joe Biden in opinion polls by a wide margin makes the statement deeply concerning. Such inflammatory language not only lacks a fac- tual basis but also perpetuates harmful stereotypes, fostering an environment of fear and hatred. Drawing parallels to historical atrocities serves as a stark re- minder of the responsibility that comes with holding influential platforms. In a world striving for unity and understanding, leaders must choose their words wise- ly, steering clear of rhetoric that has caused immeasur- able pain and suffering in the past.Trump’s words risk deepening divisions rather than fostering the inclusiv- ity and empathy needed for a harmonious society. But Trump is known for his outrageous remarks. I NO, MR MUSK, DEI IS NOT PROPAGANDA n contemporary discourse, the terms “diver- sity,” “equity” and “inclusion,” are often dismissed as mere propaganda, devoid of substantive impact. Critics like Elon Musk argue that these words have become buzzwords employed for virtue signalling rather than effecting meaningful change. While it is true that the overuse of these terms in various contexts has diluted their signifi- cance, it is essential to recognize the underlying im- portance of these modern-day terms. Inclusion, at its core, advocates for the involve- ment and empowerment of all individuals, irrespec- tive of differences based on colour, culture and creed. Diversity acknowledges the richness that arises from a variety of perspec- tives, experiences, and backgrounds. Equity, in turn, em- phasizes fairness and impartiality in the treatment of individ- uals, accounting for diverse circumstanc- es. When it comes to lack of equity in workplaces women form the biggest dis- advantaged group. Musk may view these concepts as empty rhetoric, but their essence lies in the actions they in- spire. Genuine efforts to foster inclusion, diversity, and equity result in workplaces and com- munities that thrive on a multitude of voices, fostering innovation and understanding. Labelling these prin- ciples as propaganda dismisses the genuine strides made by organisations and societies in creating envi- ronments where everyone feels relevant and valued. One may point to the overuse of the terms “inclu- sion,” “diversity,” and “equity” in certain contexts, but it is crucial to separate rhetoric from action. Em- bracing these principles authentically, as is being done in several countries, can lead to positive trans- formations and challenge the notion voiced by the Tesla boss that they are mere propaganda words. HOMEMAKERS AI is becoming an integral part of our homes, enhanc- ing convenience and effi- ciency. Approximately 31% of U.S. households use smart speakers, ac- cording to Statista. Virtual assistants like Google Home, AI Pin, Siri, and Alexa can manage tasks and answer questions. Meanwhile, Nest Learning Thermostats, equipped with AI, have saved users up to 15% on cooling and 10-12% on heating costs. AI-powered appliances, such as smart refrigerators, adapt to usage patterns, minimizing energy con- sumption. Soon we will witness automatic temper- ature settings based on the time of the year and person available in the room, as with time these machines will learn the behaviour and predict accurately. A good example could beAC automatically switching to heater mode at 24-degree temperature as soon as winter starts. FARMERS AI is revolutionizing agri- culture by making farming practices more data-driv- en. According to a report by Markets and Markets, the precision farming mar- ket is expected to reach $12.9 billion by 2025. AI- driven drones and sensors monitor crop health, and John Deere’sAI-enhanced tractors can autonomously plant, weed, and harvest crops. This technology not only increases yields but also reduces resource usage, making farming more sustainable. AI- powered drones and satel- lites can monitor crop health by analyzing data on temperature, moisture levels, and nutrient con- tent in real time. GOVERNMENT Governments are leverag- ing AI to improve public services and decision-mak- ing. For example, the State of California saved over $9 million in fraudulent un- employment claims using AI-driven fraud detection systems. AI traffic man- agement systems in Singa- pore have reduced traffic jams by 25%, saving com- muters 1.5 million hours of travel time annually. Ad- ditionally, AI in law en- forcement, such as facial recognition, has helped identify criminals more ef- ficiently. We recently wit- nessed real-time transla- tion of our Hon’ble PM’s speech in multiple Indian languages through the Bhashni platform, showing the high impact of AI where language barriers are being broken. MANUFACTURING COMPANIES The manufacturing indus- try is being transformed by AI, with profound im- pacts on efficiency and quality. According to the Boston Consulting Group, AI could add up to $15.7 trillion to the global econ- omy by 2030, with manu- facturing being a signifi- cant contributor. Compa- nies like Tesla have de- ployed AI-powered robots in their factories, increas- ing production rates and product quality. Predictive maintenance with AI has led to a 20-50% reduction in unplanned downtime across various industries. AI-powered robots can work alongside human employees, improving productivity and handling repetitive or dangerous tasks. We could save hu- man life and avoid inci- dences where human life gets trapped in manholes or tunnels or mines. CONCLUSION AI’s influence on our lives and society is indisputable, and the numbers and exam- ples speak for themselves. From enhancing customer experiences in small shops to diagnosing diseases with remarkable accuracy, im- proving energy efficiency in our homes, and revolu- tionizing farming and man- ufacturing, AI is at the heart of these transforma- tive changes. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL LEVERAGING AI Governments are leverag- ing AI to improve public services and decision- making. For example, the State of California saved over $9 million in fraudu- lent unemployment claims using AI-driven fraud de- tection systems. AI traffic management systems in Singapore have reduced traffic jams by 25%, saving commuters 1.5 million hours of travel time an- nually. Additionally, AI in law enforcement, such as facial recognition, has helped identify criminals more efficiently. AI can analyze weather and geological data to predict natural disasters like hur- ricanes or earthquakes, enabling better prepared- ness and response. • 8. INDIAN PREMIER LEAGUE AUCTION STRATEGY Whatkindofplayerswill teamsbidforwhy? HERE IS A LOOK AT POSSIBLE AUCTION STRATEGY FOR TEAMS CHENNAI SUPER KINGS Potential Players of Interest: Shardul Thakur, Manish Pandey, Josh Hazlewood Shardul Thakur was earlier with CSK and is a seasoned Indian campaigner, who can bowl at death and chance his arms coming in at No. 8. CSK could go up to Rs 10 crore and upwards for Shardul. They would look at an Indian batter to replace Ambati Rayudu and may look at Manish Pandey for bargain buy as there aren’t too many experienced Indians listed. Purse Left `31.4 cr GUJARAT TITANS Potential Players of Interest: Shardul Thakur, Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, Azmatullah Omarzai Whatever they do, even Gujarat Titans fans would agree that there can’t be a replacement of Hardik Pandya as a whole package. Shardul Thakur at best would be a 50 to 60 percent replacement. Rachin Ravindra could be a choice but then Wriddhiman Saha, Shubman Gill and B Sai Sudharsan will take first three spots in batting order. Purse Left `38.15 cr LUCKNOW SUPER GIANTS Potential Players of Interest: Gerald Coetzee, Dilshan Madushanka, Ashutosh Sharma LSG would look at another quality fast bowling option apart from Mark Wood. Starc, Hazlewood and South African Gerald Coetzee are three options readily available. Among left-arm pacer, there is Nandre Burger and Dilshan Madushanka. Among uncapped Indian batters, there is Railwayman Ashutosh Sharma, who scored 12-ball-50 in SMAT. Purse Left `13.15 cr PUNJAB KINGS Potential Players of Interest: Shardul, Harshal, Rachin Ravindra Punjab Kings have two overseas slots left and if they follow their old trend of going for the flavour of the season, then Rachin Ravindra could be a potential pick and they have the money to go the distance for the Kiwi. However what they need urgently is a quality Indian pacer and the three options are Harshal, Shardul and Umesh Yadav. Purse Left `29.10 cr KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERS Potential Players of Interest: Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Rachin Ravindra, Harshal Patel What KKR needs immediately is a couple of good pace bowlers, preferably one among Australia’s Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins or Jos Hazlewood along with Harshal Patel, who is always a handy option. Purse Left `32.70 cr DELHI CAPITALS Potential Players of Interest: Priyansh Arya, Harshal Patel, Shardul Thakur, Jos Inglis, Wanindu Hasaranga Delhi Capitals’ weakest link is their Indian collection of batters and poor is under-statement for the kind of assortment they have got. Purse Left `28.95 cr SUNRISERS HYDERABAD Potential Players of Interest: Anyone and everyone With not many Indian players in the roster, Shardul and Harshal could well be their choice too and they can bid deep. But they would need at least one good foreign pacer and one more top-order batter - preferably Indian. Purse Left `34 cr MUMBAI INDIANS Potential Players of Interest: Hasaranga, Manav Suthar, Ashutosh Sharma, Darshan Misal MI doesn’t have too much money but its scout will make a bargain buy in terms of uncapped Indian players. Purse Left `17.75 cr ROYAL CHALLENGERS BENGALURU Potential Players of Interest: Starc, Cummins, Manav Suthar RCB freed Rs 10.75 crore paid to Harshal Patel in order to bid for a overseas pacer and the three Australian pacers will be much in demand. With Mo Bobat joining the RCB ranks, it will be interesting to see if Englishmen Gus Atkinson or Reece Topley get good bids. Purse Left `23.25 cr RAJASTHAN ROYALS Potential Players of Interest: Mainly domestic Indian batters like Sameer Rizvi, Swastik Chikkara, Ashutosh Sharma, Abhimanyu Singh, Saurabh Chauhan Royals have always had a good clutch of youngsters picked from domestic tournaments and rigorous trials. All those who have performed in Syed Mushtaq Ali, TNPL, UP Premier League will have a good chance of getting deals. Purse Left `14.70 cr The mini auctions of IPL have always been intriguing because of high demand-short supply ratio of players, especially, quality Indian talent. Whether I should wake up my wife with a kiss or let her sleep longer. Should I get out of bed or just press the snooze but- ton? And that is even be- fore I have had my first cup of coffee. Our daily life is rife with so-called trivial decisions. People often feel silly for over- thinking low-stakes deci- sions but research has shown there are logical reasons for feeling this way. Understanding why you feel so stressed by smaller decisions can help you learn what to do about it. First, sometimes the sheer number of options overwhelms us, as we find it difficult to compare and contrast the options. Eco- nomics scholars long championed the notion thatit’sbettertohavemore choices. But in 2000, US psychologists Sheena Iyengar and Mark Leeper challenged this idea. In one of their studies, they set up a jam-testing table at a supermarket. Far more consumers bought a jam when they were given fewer options. Almost a third (30%) of customers went on to buy a jam when the stall had six flavours yet only 3% of customers bought jam when there were 24 fla- vours. Drawing on these find- ings, US psychologist Barry Schwartz’s book The Paradox of Choice: Why More is Less, argues an abundance of choices can cause people anxiety. People often lack, or believe they lack the ex- pertise to properly assess their options. For exam- ple, when dealing with a financial decision. And if you have goals, a lack of certainty about how rig- idly you want to stick to them is probably going to give you a headache. A vague goal to “start sav- ing more” isn’t going to give you clarity when a friend suggests going out for food and your belly is rumbling. Also, some of the deci- sions we label trivial may have emotional high stakes. IT’S YOUR PERSONALITY Another line of re- search has focused on the link be- tween people’s decision strate- gies and well- being. Re- searchers have identified two main decision- making strate- gies: Maximising and satisficing. Maximising is a tendency to try and find the best op- tion. Satisficing, a term introduced by Nobel prize winner Herbert Si- mon, is a strategy that terminates once an ac- ceptable option is found. Maximising and satisfy- ing have been linked to personality traits. Some people tend to maximise and others who are more sat- isficers. Schwartz and his col- leagues found a negative relationship between a tendency to maximise and feelings of life satis- faction. Maximisers (compared with satisfic- ers) were also more likely to experience post-deci- sion regret. One explana- tion is that maximisers are always brooding about what they could have done and how they could have made a better deci- sion. To be clear, the study did not ex- amine major life decisions about marriage or health but fo- cused on every- day decisions (al- though similar find- ings have been report- ed about more serious medical decisions). MAKE A HABIT OF IT Decisionscanbementally exhausting. So sometimes everyday choices feel hard because you have decision fatigue. William James, one of the greatest thinkers of the 19th and 20th centu- ries, suggested habits help us cope with these complexities. Habits take away the need to think. Investing your time in building habits can stop you from ruminating on everyday decisions. William James’ in- sights have inspired many contemporary research- ers. One idea popularised by psychologist Daniel Kahneman’s book,Think- ing, Fast and Slow, is the notionthatweusetwodif- ferent information pro- cessing mechanisms, sys- tem one and system two. System one is uncon- scious, fast, and intuitive. It requires little effort. System two is purposeful thinking.Waking up at the same time every morning, kissing my wife and then making coffee has be- come a habit that has helped me avoid thinking too much about these ac- tivities. I let my system take charge as much as I can, at least until I have my first cup of coffee. US writer Merlin Mann said, “Thinking can be the enemy of action”. While I am not sure I would agree, his words do resonate with many findings from psychology. Herbert Simon devel- oped the idea of satisfic- ing because he believed humans have limited cog- nitive and other capacities (such as memory and at- tention). Thinking too much — for example, whether to exercise today or not — can be stressful and frustrate the intention to do so. You have to decide how to invest your resources (whether they are cogni- tive, emotional, or physi- cal). Investing them in thinking about exercising can consume the energy youneedtoexercise. When it comes to our daily deci- sions, reducingthenumber of options can also help easetheprocess.Appleco- founder Steve Jobs was well known for wearing similaroutfitsalmostevery day(jeansandaturtleneck or a T-shirt) partly to sim- plify the decision process. It’s about accepting you have limited “deci- sion-making juice” and being conscious about how you use it. Reducing choices, developing good habits, and letting our so- called system take charge can help us face our daily decisions.
