Haryana’s new Chief
Minister Nayab Singh
Saini won a floor test at a
specialAssembly session
convened on Wednesday.
The development came a
day after former Chief
Minister Manohar Lal
Khattar resigned as the
Chief Minister and the
BJP broke ranks with its
ally Jannayak Janta Party
(JJP). Saini, who took
oath as the Chief Minis-
ter on Tuesday following
the surprise resignation
of Manohar Lal Khattar,
sent a letter of support of
48 MLAs to Governor
Bandaru Dattatreya.

Days after the high-pro-
file announcement of
195 candidates, featuring
PM Modi’s candidature
from Varanasi, the BJP
on Wednesday released
its second list of 72 can-
didates from 11 states
and UTs, springing many
surprises, similar to its
first list. While the first
list of 195 saw 34 sitting
Union Ministers being
fielded, in second, BJP
included the mins name-
ly Nitin Gadkari, Piyush
Goyal, Anurag Singh
Thakur & Prahlad Joshi.
But a closer shows the
constant trend — field-
ing ministers from the
Rajya Sabha, Delhi reset
and disruptions by drop-
ping many sitting MPs.
BJP has fielded its Rajya
Sabha MP Piyush Goyal
from Mumbai North. In-
terestingly, a substantial
portion of his term as a
RS member was left. The
BJP has started this
trend, where sitting mins,
who have won from RS,
are being asked to fight
the LS polls. Continuing
with trend of fielding
former CM who either
lost or were unceremoni-
ously removed by the
party, BJP fielded such
names however dropped
Ramesh Pokhriyal Nis-
hank. Well, Khattar from
Karnal did not come as a
surprise. TURN TO P8

he tenth Lok Sab-
ha elections in the
country were held
in 1991. This was
the third midterm poll in
country’s history. The en-
tire election was fought
around only two issues.
First,recommendationsof
Mandal Commission and
second, Ram Janmabhoo-
mi-Babri Masjid dispute.
For this reason it was also
calledtheelectionofMan-
dal-Kamandal. It was dur-
ing this poll that former
PM Rajiv Gandhi was as-
sassinated and due to the
sympathywave,Congress
succeededincomingclos-
er to power, leaving other
parties behind. Congress
did not get full majority
but once again formed the
government with the sup-
port of Left parties. PV

gress who was not from
the Nehru-Gandhi family.
After the dissolution of
the Ninth Lok Sabha in
1991, the first phase of
voting for the Tenth Lok
Sabha occurred on May
20. The process was in-
terrupted by the assassi-
nation of former PM Ra-
jiv Gandhi by LTTE ter-
rorists on May 21 while
campaigning in Tamil
Nadu. Consequently, the
election was postponed
for 15 days, with the re-
maining two phases of
voting held on June 12
and June 15. Rajiv’s as-
sassination occurred after
the first phase of voting
in 211 constituencies out
of 534, resulting in vary-
ing results between stag-
es. While the Congress
was almost wiped out in
the first phase, in subse-
quent two phases it
scored a big victory due
to sympathy wave. It
won 232 seats but was 40
short of a majority. How-
ever, due to terrorism, in
the elections held in Pun-
jab on 19 February 1992,
Congress got 12 out of 13
seats, taking its tally to
244.

PV Narasimha Rao, who became the Prime
Minister after the elections of the tenth Lok Sabha,
did not become a candidate in the 1991 elections.
Despite this, Congress chose Rao for the post of Prime
Minister. Rao later contested the Lok Sabha elections from
Nandyal seat in Andhra Pradesh and won by six and a
half lakh votes. Apart from the Nehru-Gandhi family, Rao
became the first Prime Minister who held the post of Prime
Minister for a full five years. It was during the tenure of
Narasimha Rao that the controversial Babri structure was
demolished by karsevaks in Ayodhya. It was Narasimha
Rao who brought Manmohan Singh, the former Governor
of the Reserve Bank, into politics by making him the
Finance Minister, who later became the Prime Minister
of the country twice. His tenure is also remembered for
economic reforms and liberalization in the country.

as a political mi-
crocosm, showcasing the
complex interplay of his-
torical legacies, changing

evolving electoral land-

The constituency,
comprising eight Vidhan

been a witness to intrigu-
ing developments, set-
ting the stage for the up-
coming 2024 Lok Sabha
elections
A General category seat,
Churu has been a BJP
stronghold since 1999.
Ram Singh Kaswan of the
BJPwon for 3 consecutive
terms, followed by his son
Rahul Kaswan doing the
same for 2 terms now.
Notably, five of Chu-
ru’s eight Vidhan Sabha
constituencies are held
by Congress, which the
party is claiming as their
path to victory in the up-
coming Lok Sabha polls.
The electoral history
of Churu reveals a fasci-
nating transition. Until
1977, the constituency
did not exist. Subse-
quently, the political
spectrum witnessed the
Janata Party era with
Daulat Ram Saran, be-
coming the first MP fol-
lowed by Congress and

tions.

DENIED TICKET, BJP MP KASWAN
QUITS PARTY GETS CONG TICKET!
It may be noted that the Lok Sabha
elections in Churu have become very
interesting this time as soon as the BJP
announced its first list of candidates. The party
fielded paralympian Devendra Jhajharia from
Churu while denying a ticket to its two-time
MP Rahul Kaswan. A miffed Kaswan quit the
party and joined the Congress on Monday
and on Tuesday Congress gave him a ticket
from Churu seat. The Churu seat has been a
BJP citadel with the Kaswan family winning
it successively since the 2004 LS polls.
Incidently, Rahul was the youngest LS MP
from State at the age of 37 when he won the
2014 general elections by defeating Bahujan
Samaj Party’s Abhinesh Maharshi.
IfyouliveinLakshadweep,

Jaipur
t present, each
MP has 4
times more
voters than in
the first elec-
tion held in
1951–52. In previous
polls, where 5 lakh voters
used to elect one MP, now
around 20 lakh voters
elect one MP. Some states
are suffering a loss due to
number of LS seats being
stable. Since number of
MPs became stable, the
population has increased
significantly. Due to the
stabilization of numbers,
the political balance has
also been disturbed.
The value of votes in
all the states of the coun-
try has become unequal.
Indian MPs represent the
largest population in the
world, which is much
higher than the global av-
erage.
Due to the high popu-
lation in the parliamen-
tary constituency, the
public representatives are
not able to develop their
area properly and their
reach to the people has
also been limited. If a
representative is elected
from a smaller popula-
tion then he or she will be
able to develop his area
properly.
In delimitation done
based on 1971 Census,
one Lok Sabha seat was
created for population of
10 to 10.6 lakh in big
states, but now there has
been a lot of difference.
In our country, there is
one Lok Sabha MP for a
population of more than
25 lakh. This is the high-
est in the world.
The Constitution talks
about one MP for a max-
imum population of ten
lakh. It also says that the
number of MPs cannot
exceed 550. The Consti-
tution also mandates to
increase or decrease of
the number of seats in the
states according to the
population. Accordingly,
till 1971, the number of
seats in the country and
different states also in-
creased and decreased.
But, there has been no
change in this for the last
50 years. The result of
this was that today in UP
there is one MP for every
30 lakh people and in Ta-
mil Nadu there is one MP
for every 20 lakh people.
If we look at the mid-
year survey of 2016, an
MP from Rajasthan rep-
resents a population of 30
lakh while an MP from
Kerala represents less
than 18 lakh. MPs from
smaller states and union
territories represent
smaller populations but it
was considered neces-
sary from beginning that
at least one Lok Sabha
MP should be elected
from even smallest state.

Malkajgiri of Telanga-
naisthelargestLokSabha
constituency in the coun-
try with 31,83,325 voters.
Whereas in Lakshadweep
the number of voters is
around 50,000.
According to this, the
voters of Lakshadweep
arethirtytimesmorepow-
erful than the voters of
other seats in the country.
If compared with Lak-
shadweep, Malkajgiri has
64 times more voters
whichmeansthatonevote

to 64 votes of Malkajgiri.
NO. OF SEATS KEPT
INCREASING TILL 1971
Delimitation was done
based on the Census of
1951, 1961 and 1971. Due
to less population increase
inthestatesofSouthIndia,
the LS seats of Hindi belt
stateswereincreased.Thus
the political power of the
southern states started de-
creasing. By linking this
with population control,
they stabilised the number
of seats.

LAKSHADWEEP’S VOTE
IS THE MOST POWERFUL
If we compare all the states
and union territories of the
country, the value of vote of
Lakshadweep is the highest. Lak-
shadweep has 30 times more voters
than every Lok Sabha seat in the
country. In this way the average voter
of Lakshadweep is equal to 30 Indian
votes. The interesting fact is that the
total voters of the five smallest Lok
Sabha constituencies are less than
8 lakh whereas the five largest Lok
Sabha constituencies have 1.2 crore
voters which is 15 times more than
the smallest five constituencies.
27 SEATS WILL INCREASE
IN HINDI BELT
If the basic provisions of the
Constitution are implemented
as they are in today’s situ-
ation, the nature of the Lok Sabha
will change completely. There will be
an increase of 27 seats only in Hindi
speaking states like Rajasthan, Bihar,
Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. There will
be a reduction of 22 seats in southern
states like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Kar-

press my gratitude for mak-
ing time. I introduced my-
self as Anu Malik, and he
immediately nodded his
head with a smile, saying, I
know, I know, I do know
you. It was such an honour
for me. Many years later,
when I again had the oppor-
tunity to meet him at the
inauguration of HN Reli-
ance Foundation hospital in
Mumbai. I remember he
gave a wonderful speech at
the event enumerating the
benefits of Ayurveda, the
power of natural medicines
and yoga. Later as people
lined up to meet the PM, my
wife and I went up to Modi
ji and reminded him of the
brief meeting I had with him
at the Karnavati Club.Again
Modi ji immediately ac-
knowledged it
and said he re-
membered it
very well. He
even recalled
how I had come
down from the
stage and sat
with him for his
blessings. I can
never forget
these two mo-
ments of my
life with Modi
ji. I became a
fan of Modi ji
like everyone
else around the
world.
hen a delegation of a cream of
Kashmiri industrialists, social
workers and religious heads met
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he lis-
tened to them intently and assured them
that the problems of Kashmir would be
sorted out. He said the footfall in the tour-
ist destinations of Kashmir would be
highest. He had a belief and confidence
when he
said this that
we had not
seen earlier
in any lead-
er and we
looked at
each other
in disbelief.
How could
tourism rise
when no
one was
willing to be
here due to
the social
situation? But soon after, just one tweet
of Modi ji changed the whole scenario of
Kashmir. His first tweet was about the
famous tulip garden and it garnered mil-
lions of views, renewing the world’s inter-
est in it. Tourists started flocking in. He
had said religious tourism would be made
a reality in Kashmir. Today indeed it is so.
This has led us to believe in the truth of
the adage, ‘Modi Hai To Mumkin Hai’.
was struck by Modi ji’s im-
peccable professionalism
that goes hand in hand with
his personal humanitarian touch in
everything he does. I remember we
were set for a meeting in Gandhina-
gar regarding the Mind Champions
Academy — a programme to intro-
duce chess in schools and we were
proposing the same to the Gujarat
government. Things moved with
clockwise precision. We were
shown to the meeting room exactly
at 11 and Modi ji, as the CM of Gu-
jarat at that time, joined in soon. The
officials were all well instructed and
informed beforehand. Everyone
was ready with their homework. It
was a seamless experience and the
meeting lasted just as long as it was
needed. There
was proper

and other offi-
cial channels,
which gave us
point by point
details of how
we were pro-
gressing and
which were
the areas of
disagreement
if any.
I remember
I once told
Modi ji casu-
ally that I
loved Gujarati meal. He immedi-
ately told me, let me treat you to a
Gujarati thali and he took me to the
state guest house for a sumptuous
lunch. Such is his humanitarian ap-
proach despite all his professional
business. He has a strong human
side to all his professional tough-
ness as he laughs, cracks jokes and
loves to have fun. His focus at work
co-exists so well with his individ-
ual attention.
Ithasbecomeanormnowthatthe

lete if he/she achieves something
great at the world stage. This is a
greatmotivationforsportspersonsto
get a call from the PM of the country
and this elevates his/her stature.
Again this is an instance of the indi-
vidual touch I mentioned.
I was also surprised by his in-
novative approach to things. When
we organised the mega chess com-
petition (Chess Mahotsav) in De-
cember 2010 with 20,000 partici-
pants and entered the Guinness
Book of Records as the largest such
simultaneous display in the world
at a single venue, all the table
clothes were ordered in black and
white colours so that they could
create a chessboard pattern. When
an aerial shot was taken, the whole
stadium sported the look of a chess-
board due to the black and white
table clothes. Modi ji had visual-
ised the whole thing beforehand
and instructed to plan the event ac-
cordingly. Also the organisation of
the event was flawless. Buses were
deployed by the state government
to bring volunteers to the venue
from all across the state. Even sev-
eral international grandmasters
were invited and hosted by the gov-
ernment to be a part of the event.
Similarly, when the chess olym-
piad was organised, there was no
concept of a rally torch like it hap-
pens in the Olympics. But Modi ji,
in another display of imagination
and his innovative spirit, introduced
the concept of a torch rally for the
chess olympiad and how it has be-
come an important part of the event.
These things really make him stand
apart as a leader par excellence.

every aspect of his work. They highlight his distinct manner of connecting with people, never forgetting previous interactions.
During a meeting with a delegation comprising leading Kashmiri industrialists, social advocates, and religious figures, PM Modi
attentively heard their perspectives and offered assurances regarding the issues confronting Kashmir and beyond.

he tenth Lok Sab-
ha elections in the
country were held
in 1991. This was
the third midterm poll in
country’s history. The en-
tire election was fought
around only two issues.
First,recommendationsof
Mandal Commission and
second, Ram Janmabhoo-
mi-Babri Masjid dispute.
For this reason it was also
calledtheelectionofMan-

ing this poll that former
PM Rajiv Gandhi was as-
sassinated and due to the
sympathywave,Congress

parties behind. Congress
did not get full majority
but once again formed the

After the dissolution of
the Ninth Lok Sabha in
1991, the first phase of
voting for the Tenth Lok
Sabha occurred on May
20. The process was in-
terrupted by the assassi-
nation of former PM Ra-
jiv Gandhi by LTTE ter-
rorists on May 21 while
campaigning in Tamil
Nadu. Consequently, the
election was postponed
for 15 days, with the re-
maining two phases of
voting held on June 12
and June 15. Rajiv’s as-
sassination occurred after
the first phase of voting
in 211 constituencies out
of 534, resulting in vary-
ing results between stag-
es. While the Congress
was almost wiped out in
the first phase, in subse-
quent two phases it
scored a big victory due
to sympathy wave. It
won 232 seats but was 40
short of a majority. How-
ever, due to terrorism, in
the elections held in Pun-
jab on 19 February 1992,
Congress got 12 out of 13
seats, taking its tally to
244.

PV Narasimha Rao, who became the Prime
Minister after the elections of the tenth Lok Sabha,
did not become a candidate in the 1991 elections.
Despite this, Congress chose Rao for the post of Prime
Minister. Rao later contested the Lok Sabha elections from
Nandyal seat in Andhra Pradesh and won by six and a
half lakh votes. Apart from the Nehru-Gandhi family, Rao
became the first Prime Minister who held the post of Prime
Minister for a full five years. It was during the tenure of
Narasimha Rao that the controversial Babri structure was
demolished by karsevaks in Ayodhya. It was Narasimha
Rao who brought Manmohan Singh, the former Governor
of the Reserve Bank, into politics by making him the
Finance Minister, who later became the Prime Minister
of the country twice. His tenure is also remembered for
economic reforms and liberalization in the country.

been a witness to intrigu-

ting the stage for the up-

A General category seat,
Churu has been a BJP

Notably, five of Chu-
ru’s eight Vidhan Sabha

by Congress, which the
party is claiming as their
path to victory in the up-
coming Lok Sabha polls.
The electoral history
of Churu reveals a fasci-
nating transition. Until
1977, the constituency
did not exist. Subse-
quently, the political
spectrum witnessed the

DENIED TICKET, BJP MP KASWAN
QUITS PARTY GETS CONG TICKET!
It may be noted that the Lok Sabha
elections in Churu have become very
interesting this time as soon as the BJP
announced its first list of candidates. The party
fielded paralympian Devendra Jhajharia from
Churu while denying a ticket to its two-time
MP Rahul Kaswan. A miffed Kaswan quit the
party and joined the Congress on Monday
and on Tuesday Congress gave him a ticket
from Churu seat. The Churu seat has been a
BJP citadel with the Kaswan family winning
it successively since the 2004 LS polls.
Incidently, Rahul was the youngest LS MP
from State at the age of 37 when he won the
2014 general elections by defeating Bahujan
Samaj Party’s Abhinesh Maharshi.
IfyouliveinLakshadweep,

Jaipur
t present, each
MP has 4
times more
voters than in
the first elec-
tion held in
1951–52. In previous
polls, where 5 lakh voters
used to elect one MP, now
around 20 lakh voters
elect one MP. Some states
are suffering a loss due to
number of LS seats being
stable. Since number of
MPs became stable, the
population has increased
significantly. Due to the
stabilization of numbers,
the political balance has
also been disturbed.
The value of votes in
all the states of the coun-
try has become unequal.
Indian MPs represent the
largest population in the
world, which is much
higher than the global av-
erage.
Due to the high popu-
lation in the parliamen-
tary constituency, the
public representatives are
not able to develop their
area properly and their
reach to the people has
also been limited. If a
representative is elected
from a smaller popula-
tion then he or she will be
able to develop his area
properly.
In delimitation done
based on 1971 Census,
one Lok Sabha seat was
created for population of
10 to 10.6 lakh in big
states, but now there has
been a lot of difference.
In our country, there is
one Lok Sabha MP for a
population of more than
25 lakh. This is the high-
est in the world.
The Constitution talks
about one MP for a max-
imum population of ten
lakh. It also says that the
number of MPs cannot
exceed 550. The Consti-
tution also mandates to
increase or decrease of
the number of seats in the
states according to the
population. Accordingly,
till 1971, the number of
seats in the country and
different states also in-
creased and decreased.
But, there has been no
change in this for the last
50 years. The result of
this was that today in UP
there is one MP for every
30 lakh people and in Ta-
mil Nadu there is one MP
for every 20 lakh people.
If we look at the mid-
year survey of 2016, an
MP from Rajasthan rep-
resents a population of 30
lakh while an MP from
Kerala represents less
than 18 lakh. MPs from
smaller states and union
territories represent
smaller populations but it
was considered neces-
sary from beginning that
at least one Lok Sabha
MP should be elected
from even smallest state.

try with 31,83,325 voters.
Whereas in Lakshadweep
the number of voters is
around 50,000.
According to this, the
voters of Lakshadweep
arethirtytimesmorepow-
erful than the voters of
other seats in the country.
If compared with Lak-
shadweep, Malkajgiri has
64 times more voters
whichmeansthatonevote

NO. OF SEATS KEPT
INCREASING TILL 1971
Delimitation was done
based on the Census of
1951, 1961 and 1971. Due
to less population increase
inthestatesofSouthIndia,
the LS seats of Hindi belt
stateswereincreased.Thus
the political power of the
southern states started de-
creasing. By linking this
with population control,
they stabilised the number
of seats.

LAKSHADWEEP’S VOTE
IS THE MOST POWERFUL
If we compare all the states
and union territories of the
country, the value of vote of
Lakshadweep is the highest. Lak-
shadweep has 30 times more voters
than every Lok Sabha seat in the
country. In this way the average voter
of Lakshadweep is equal to 30 Indian
votes. The interesting fact is that the
total voters of the five smallest Lok
Sabha constituencies are less than
8 lakh whereas the five largest Lok
Sabha constituencies have 1.2 crore
voters which is 15 times more than
the smallest five constituencies.
27 SEATS WILL INCREASE
IN HINDI BELT
If the basic provisions of the
Constitution are implemented
as they are in today’s situ-
ation, the nature of the Lok Sabha
will change completely. There will be
an increase of 27 seats only in Hindi
speaking states like Rajasthan, Bihar,
Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. There will
be a reduction of 22 seats in southern
states like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Kar-

‘MODI HAI TO MUMKIN HAI…’ UNTOLD STORIES OF PM MODI — PART 76
was performing at
Ahmedabad’s Kar-
navati Club, way
back in 2004, when Modi ji
was the Chief Minister of
Gujarat. I was singing on
stage when there was a
small commotion at the gate
and we heard Modi ji had
come. He came in and sat in
the front row, listening to
my music. I was so happy
and excited to have such a
guest in attendance that I
came down from the stage
and sat beside him to ex-
press my gratitude for mak-
ing time. I introduced my-
self as Anu Malik, and he
immediately nodded his
head with a smile, saying, I
know, I know, I do know
you. It was such an honour
for me. Many years later,
when I again had the oppor-
tunity to meet him at the
inauguration of HN Reli-
ance Foundation hospital in
Mumbai. I remember he
gave a wonderful speech at
the event enumerating the
benefits of Ayurveda, the
power of natural medicines
and yoga. Later as people
lined up to meet the PM, my
wife and I went up to Modi
ji and reminded him of the
brief meeting I had with him
at the Karnavati Club.Again
Modi ji immediately ac-
knowledged it
and said he re-
membered it
very well. He
even recalled
how I had come
down from the
stage and sat
with him for his
blessings. I can
never forget
these two mo-
ments of my
life with Modi
ji. I became a
fan of Modi ji
like everyone
else around the
world.
hen a delegation of a cream of
Kashmiri industrialists, social
workers and religious heads met
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he lis-
tened to them intently and assured them
that the problems of Kashmir would be
sorted out. He said the footfall in the tour-
ist destinations of Kashmir would be
highest. He had a belief and confidence
when he
said this that
we had not
seen earlier
in any lead-
er and we
looked at
each other
in disbelief.
How could
tourism rise
when no
one was
willing to be
here due to
the social
situation? But soon after, just one tweet
of Modi ji changed the whole scenario of
Kashmir. His first tweet was about the
famous tulip garden and it garnered mil-
lions of views, renewing the world’s inter-
est in it. Tourists started flocking in. He
had said religious tourism would be made
a reality in Kashmir. Today indeed it is so.
This has led us to believe in the truth of
the adage, ‘Modi Hai To Mumkin Hai’.
was struck by Modi ji’s im-
peccable professionalism
that goes hand in hand with
his personal humanitarian touch in
everything he does. I remember we
were set for a meeting in Gandhina-
gar regarding the Mind Champions
Academy — a programme to intro-
duce chess in schools and we were
proposing the same to the Gujarat
government. Things moved with
clockwise precision. We were
shown to the meeting room exactly
at 11 and Modi ji, as the CM of Gu-
jarat at that time, joined in soon. The
officials were all well instructed and
informed beforehand. Everyone
was ready with their homework. It
was a seamless experience and the
meeting lasted just as long as it was
needed. There
was proper
f o l l o w - u p
through emails
and other offi-
cial channels,
which gave us
point by point
details of how
we were pro-
gressing and
which were
the areas of
disagreement
if any.
I remember
I once told
Modi ji casu-
ally that I
loved Gujarati meal. He immedi-
ately told me, let me treat you to a
Gujarati thali and he took me to the
state guest house for a sumptuous
lunch. Such is his humanitarian ap-
proach despite all his professional
business. He has a strong human
side to all his professional tough-
ness as he laughs, cracks jokes and
loves to have fun. His focus at work
co-exists so well with his individ-
ual attention.
Ithasbecomeanormnowthatthe
PMwillcallandcongratulateanath-
lete if he/she achieves something
great at the world stage. This is a
greatmotivationforsportspersonsto
get a call from the PM of the country
and this elevates his/her stature.
Again this is an instance of the indi-
vidual touch I mentioned.
I was also surprised by his in-
novative approach to things. When
we organised the mega chess com-
petition (Chess Mahotsav) in De-
cember 2010 with 20,000 partici-
pants and entered the Guinness
Book of Records as the largest such
simultaneous display in the world
at a single venue, all the table
clothes were ordered in black and
white colours so that they could
create a chessboard pattern. When
an aerial shot was taken, the whole
stadium sported the look of a chess-
board due to the black and white
table clothes. Modi ji had visual-
ised the whole thing beforehand
and instructed to plan the event ac-
cordingly. Also the organisation of
the event was flawless. Buses were
deployed by the state government
to bring volunteers to the venue
from all across the state. Even sev-
eral international grandmasters
were invited and hosted by the gov-
ernment to be a part of the event.
Similarly, when the chess olym-
piad was organised, there was no
concept of a rally torch like it hap-
pens in the Olympics. But Modi ji,
in another display of imagination
and his innovative spirit, introduced
the concept of a torch rally for the
chess olympiad and how it has be-
come an important part of the event.
These things really make him stand
apart as a leader par excellence.

UP CM terms Cong Samajwadi Party as ‘liabilities’
First India Bureau
Unnao/Farrukhabad
Terming the Samajwadi
Party (SP) and Congress
as ‘liabilities’, Uttar
Pradesh Chief Minister
Yogi Adityanath urged
people to refrain from
voting for parties that fail
to ensure the provision of
essentials such as ration,
housing, and healthcare to
the underprivileged. He
also criticised them for
not honouring people’s
faith by constructing the
Ram Temple in Ayodhya.
In Farrukhabad,Adity-
anath lashed out at the
previous governments
and cautioned the voters
not to get seduced by
those who “imposed cur-
fews, prevented progress
and worked on a policy
of appeasement”.
Addressing a function
in Unnao to inaugurate
and lay foundation stones
of projects worth Rs 241
crore, the chief minister
asked the gathering,
“Could those in the Con-
gress have made the Ram
temple (possible) in Ayo-
dhya? Could those in the
SP have made it? If they
cannot give ration, houses
or health facilities to the
poor nor can they respect
your faith by building a
Ram temple, why do you
waste your vote and ac-
cept them as a burden
over you?” With 80 Lok
Sabha seats, the maxi-
mum amongst all the
states, Uttar Pradesh is the
most crucial battleground
for the Bharatiya Janata
Party (BJP), which is eye-
ing to retain power for a
third consecutive term at
the Centre in the upcom-
ing general election.

ISLAM TEACHES LOYALTY TO ONES COUNTRY
‘Muslims should not view CAA as a law against their community’
Insha Warsi
he Citizenship
(Amendment)
Act (CAA)
passed in India in 2019
has been a subject of de-
bate, particularly among
Indian Muslims, who
perceive it as potentially
discriminatory towards
their community. No-
body has forgotten the
large scale protests (and
associated violence) at-
tached to it which makes
it crucial to address this
misconception and delve
into what the teachings of
Islam, as laid out by Al-
lah and exemplified by
Prophet Muhammad
(peace be upon him), say
about the importance of
loyalty to one’s country
and its laws.
Islam, as a religion,
emphasises the impor-
tance of being faithful to
both God and one’s coun-
try. The Quran teaches
that Muslims should
obey those in authority,
as stated in Surah An-
Nisa (4:60): “O ye who
believe, obey God, obey
the Prophet, and obey
those in authority.” This
verse serves as a remind-
er for Muslims to respect
and comply with the laws
and authorities of the
land in which they reside.
Prophet Muhammad fur-
ther emphasised the sig-
nificance of love for
one’s nation, teaching
that genuine patriotism is
a fundamental aspect of
faith. The Prophet stated,
“Love for one’s nation is
a part of faith.” This
teaching demonstrates
that a Muslim’s love for
God and his commitment
to his nation are not con-
flicting concepts but
rather complementary
expressions of his faith.
Islam encourages Mus-
lims to actively contrib-
ute to promote peace, and
work towards the better-
ment of society. True
love for God and Islam
also entails exhibiting
loyalty, respect, and de-
votion to one’s country.
Muslims are called upon
to be responsible and
law-abiding citizens, up-
holding the principles of
justice and fairness in
their actions. It is crucial
to clarify that Islam
strictly prohibits taking
the law into one’s own
hands or engaging in any
schemes or conspiracies
against one’s nation. The
religion advocates peace,
justice, and the rule of
law. Any grievances or
concerns should be ad-
dressed through legal and
peaceful means within
the framework of the
country’s laws and insti-
tutions. Islam teaches
that individuals should
strive to be law-abiding
citizens, promoting har-
mony and contributing
positively to their socie-
ties. In light of this un-
derstanding, it is impor-
tant for Indian Muslims
to recognise that the
CAA should not be
viewed as a law against
their community. The
legislation aims to pro-
vide a pathway to Indian
citizenship for religious
minorities facing perse-
cution in neighbouring
countries without affect-
ing the status or rights of
Indian Muslims. By em-
bracing the teachings of
Islam, Indian Muslims
can appreciate the sig-
nificance of loyalty to
their nation and actively
participate in fostering a
harmonious and inclu-
sive society.
It is important for In-
dian Muslims to under-
stand that the CAA is not
intended to target their
community but rather to
provide a legal frame-
work for assisting perse-
cuted religious minori-
ties. By dispelling mis-
conceptions and embrac-
ing the teachings of Is-
lam, Indian Muslims can
cultivate a deeper sense
of loyalty and actively
contribute to the pro-
gress, unity, and well-
being of their country
while upholding the prin-
ciples of justice, peace,
and the rule of law that
Islam advocates.Through
dialogue, understanding,
and cooperation, Indian
Muslims can play a cru-
cial role in building a har-
monious society that up-
holds the values of inclu-
sivity, religious freedom,
and equal treatment for
all its citizens.

US President Joe Biden
and former President
Donald Trump clinched
their parties’ presidential
nominations on Tuesday
with decisive victories in
a slate of low-profile pri-
maries, setting up a gen-
eral election rematch that
many voters do not want.
The outcome of con-
tests across Georgia,
Mississippi and Wash-

doubt. Neither Biden, a
Democrat, nor Trump, a
Republican, faced major
opposition. But the mag-
nitude of their wins gave
each man the delegate
majority he needed to
claim his party’s nomina-

Not even halfway

STOCK MARKET
Foreign Institutional Investors crutch no longer needed for new rise
First India Bureau
Jaipur
his week the In-
dian stock mar-
kets have once
again reached their high-
est level. The mood
changed again for the
foreign institutional in-
vestors (FIIs) who had
made purchases last
week and FIIs also made
a big sale of Rs 10081.08
crore, but the Domestic
Institutional Investors
(DIIs) also responded to
this selling by purchasing
Rs 10129.17 crore. De-
spite the selling by FIIs,
the Indian stock market
again managed to touch
new highs in the week
ending on Thursday. The
selling of FIIs can also be
understood as the fact
that there is no longer
any special need for new
investments from FIIs for
the Indian stock markets
to move forward. Indian
investors are also now
putting their trust in the
stock market considering
the pace of the country’s
economy and those who
invest smartly instead of
following hearsay and
constantly keep an eye on
their investments are also
earning. For those who
do not have time to man-
age shares after buying
them, Systematic Invest-
ment Plan i.e. SIP is
proving to be a good me-
dium. The figures for
February 2024 are proof
of this. In the month of
February, investment in
SIPthrough mutual funds
crossed Rs 19186.58
crore for the first time,
which was only Rs
18838.33 crore in the
month of January. The
number of SIP accounts
also continued to in-
crease in February and it
increased by 49.79 lakh
to reach 820.17 lakh. Fig-
ures can be boring, but
the truth is that crores of
rupees are continuously
coming into the stock
market through SIP and
this is the main reason for
the continuous rise in the
market.

trend this week, traders
say that the market looks
strong in the long term.
According to traders, for
long-term investment,
investment in selected

BJP has fielded its Rajya Sabha MP Piyush Goyal from Mumbai North. In- terestingly, a substantial portion of his term as a RS member was left. The BJP has started this trend, where sitting mins, who have won from RS, are being asked to fight the LS polls. It may be noted that the Lok Sabha elections in Churu have become very interesting this time as soon as the BJP announced its first list of candidates. The party fielded paralympian Devendra Jhajharia from Churu while denying a ticket to its two-time MP Rahul Kaswan. A miffed Kaswan quit the party and joined the Congress on Monday and on Tuesday Congress gave him a ticket from Churu seat. The Churu seat has been a BJP citadel with the Kaswan family winning it successively since the 2004 LS polls. Incidently, Rahul was the youngest LS MP from State at the age of 37 when he won the 2014 general elections by defeating Bahujan Samaj Party’s Abhinesh Maharshi. IfyouliveinLakshadweep, youronevotehaspowerofthirtyvotes! Pankaj Soni Jaipur t present, each MP has 4 times more voters than in the first elec- tion held in 1951–52. In previous polls, where 5 lakh voters used to elect one MP, now around 20 lakh voters elect one MP. Some states are suffering a loss due to number of LS seats being stable. Since number of MPs became stable, the population has increased significantly. Due to the stabilization of numbers, the political balance has also been disturbed. The value of votes in all the states of the coun- try has become unequal. Indian MPs represent the largest population in the world, which is much higher than the global av- erage. Due to the high popu- lation in the parliamen- tary constituency, the public representatives are not able to develop their area properly and their reach to the people has also been limited. If a representative is elected from a smaller popula- tion then he or she will be able to develop his area properly. In delimitation done based on 1971 Census, one Lok Sabha seat was created for population of 10 to 10.6 lakh in big states, but now there has been a lot of difference. In our country, there is one Lok Sabha MP for a population of more than 25 lakh. This is the high- est in the world. The Constitution talks about one MP for a max- imum population of ten lakh. It also says that the number of MPs cannot exceed 550. The Consti- tution also mandates to increase or decrease of the number of seats in the states according to the population. Accordingly, till 1971, the number of seats in the country and different states also in- creased and decreased. But, there has been no change in this for the last 50 years. The result of this was that today in UP there is one MP for every 30 lakh people and in Ta- mil Nadu there is one MP for every 20 lakh people. If we look at the mid- year survey of 2016, an MP from Rajasthan rep- resents a population of 30 lakh while an MP from Kerala represents less than 18 lakh. MPs from smaller states and union territories represent smaller populations but it was considered neces- sary from beginning that at least one Lok Sabha MP should be elected from even smallest state. VALUE OF VOTES BECAME UNEQUAL AS NUMBER OF MPS BECAME STABLE Malkajgiri of Telanga- naisthelargestLokSabha constituency in the coun- try with 31,83,325 voters. PERSPECT VE 06 Jaipur, Thursday | March 14, 2024 www.firstindia.co.in firstindia.co.in/epapers/jaipur thefirstindia thefirstindia thefirstindia ‘MODI HAI TO MUMKIN HAI…’ UNTOLD STORIES OF PM MODI — PART 76 was performing at Ahmedabad’s Kar- navati Club, way back in 2004, when Modi ji was the Chief Minister of Gujarat. I was singing on stage when there was a small commotion at the gate and we heard Modi ji had come. He came in and sat in the front row, listening to my music. I was so happy and excited to have such a guest in attendance that I came down from the stage and sat beside him to ex- press my gratitude for mak- ing time. I introduced my- self as Anu Malik, and he immediately nodded his head with a smile, saying, I know, I know, I do know you. It was such an honour for me. Many years later, when I again had the oppor- tunity to meet him at the inauguration of HN Reli- ance Foundation hospital in Mumbai. I remember he gave a wonderful speech at the event enumerating the benefits of Ayurveda, the power of natural medicines and yoga. Later as people lined up to meet the PM, my wife and I went up to Modi ji and reminded him of the brief meeting I had with him at the Karnavati Club.Again Modi ji immediately ac- knowledged it and said he re- membered it very well. He even recalled how I had come down from the stage and sat with him for his blessings. I can never forget these two mo- ments of my life with Modi ji. I became a fan of Modi ji like everyone else around the world. hen a delegation of a cream of Kashmiri industrialists, social workers and religious heads met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he lis- tened to them intently and assured them that the problems of Kashmir would be sorted out. He said the footfall in the tour- ist destinations of Kashmir would be highest. He had a belief and confidence when he said this that we had not seen earlier in any lead- er and we looked at each other in disbelief. How could tourism rise when no one was willing to be here due to the social situation? But soon after, just one tweet of Modi ji changed the whole scenario of Kashmir. His first tweet was about the famous tulip garden and it garnered mil- lions of views, renewing the world’s inter- est in it. Tourists started flocking in. He had said religious tourism would be made a reality in Kashmir. Today indeed it is so. This has led us to believe in the truth of the adage, ‘Modi Hai To Mumkin Hai’. was struck by Modi ji’s im- peccable professionalism that goes hand in hand with his personal humanitarian touch in everything he does. I remember we were set for a meeting in Gandhina- gar regarding the Mind Champions Academy — a programme to intro- duce chess in schools and we were proposing the same to the Gujarat government. Things moved with clockwise precision. We were shown to the meeting room exactly at 11 and Modi ji, as the CM of Gu- jarat at that time, joined in soon. The officials were all well instructed and informed beforehand. Everyone was ready with their homework. It was a seamless experience and the meeting lasted just as long as it was needed. There was proper f o l l o w - u p through emails and other offi- cial channels, which gave us point by point details of how we were pro- gressing and which were the areas of disagreement if any. I remember I once told Modi ji casu- ally that I loved Gujarati meal. He immedi- ately told me, let me treat you to a Gujarati thali and he took me to the state guest house for a sumptuous lunch. Such is his humanitarian ap- proach despite all his professional business. He has a strong human side to all his professional tough- ness as he laughs, cracks jokes and loves to have fun. His focus at work co-exists so well with his individ- ual attention. Ithasbecomeanormnowthatthe PMwillcallandcongratulateanath- lete if he/she achieves something great at the world stage. This is a greatmotivationforsportspersonsto get a call from the PM of the country and this elevates his/her stature. Again this is an instance of the indi- vidual touch I mentioned. I was also surprised by his in- novative approach to things. When we organised the mega chess com- petition (Chess Mahotsav) in De- cember 2010 with 20,000 partici- pants and entered the Guinness Book of Records as the largest such simultaneous display in the world at a single venue, all the table clothes were ordered in black and white colours so that they could create a chessboard pattern. When an aerial shot was taken, the whole stadium sported the look of a chess- board due to the black and white table clothes. Modi ji had visual- ised the whole thing beforehand and instructed to plan the event ac- cordingly. Also the organisation of the event was flawless. Buses were deployed by the state government to bring volunteers to the venue from all across the state. Even sev- eral international grandmasters were invited and hosted by the gov- ernment to be a part of the event. Similarly, when the chess olym- piad was organised, there was no concept of a rally torch like it hap- pens in the Olympics. But Modi ji, in another display of imagination and his innovative spirit, introduced the concept of a torch rally for the chess olympiad and how it has be- come an important part of the event. These things really make him stand apart as a leader par excellence. Whereas in Lakshadweep the number of voters is around 50,000. According to this, the voters of Lakshadweep arethirtytimesmorepow- erful than the voters of other seats in the country. If compared with Lak- shadweep, Malkajgiri has 64 times more voters whichmeansthatonevote of Lakshadweep is equal to 64 votes of Malkajgiri. NO. OF SEATS KEPT INCREASING TILL 1971 Delimitation was done based on the Census of 1951, 1961 and 1971. Due to less population increase inthestatesofSouthIndia, the LS seats of Hindi belt stateswereincreased. Thus the political power of the southern states started de- creasing. By linking this with population control, they stabilised the number of seats. Lak- shadweep has 30 times more voters than every Lok Sabha seat in the country. In this way the average voter of Lakshadweep is equal to 30 Indian votes. The interesting fact is that the total voters of the five smallest Lok Sabha constituencies are less than 8 lakh whereas the five largest Lok Sabha constituencies have 1.2 crore voters which is 15 times more than the smallest five constituencies. 27 SEATS WILL INCREASE IN HINDI BELT If the basic provisions of the Constitution are implemented as they are in today’s situ- ation, the nature of the Lok Sabha will change completely. There will be an increase of 27 seats only in Hindi speaking states like Rajasthan, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. There will be a reduction of 22 seats in southern states like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Kar- nataka and Andhra Pradesh. ISLAM TEACHES LOYALTY TO ONES COUNTRY ‘Muslims should not view CAA as a law against their community’ Insha Warsi he Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) passed in India in 2019 has been a subject of de- bate, particularly among Indian Muslims, who perceive it as potentially discriminatory towards their community. No- body has forgotten the large scale protests (and associated violence) at- tached to it which makes it crucial to address this misconception and delve into what the teachings of Islam, as laid out by Al- lah and exemplified by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), say about the importance of loyalty to one’s country and its laws. Islam, as a religion, emphasises the impor- tance of being faithful to both God and one’s coun- try. The Quran teaches that Muslims should obey those in authority, as stated in Surah An- Nisa (4:60): “O ye who believe, obey God, obey the Prophet, and obey those in authority.” This verse serves as a remind- er for Muslims to respect and comply with the laws and authorities of the land in which they reside. Prophet Muhammad fur- ther emphasised the sig- nificance of love for one’s nation, teaching that genuine patriotism is a fundamental aspect of faith. The Prophet stated, “Love for one’s nation is a part of faith.” This teaching demonstrates that a Muslim’s love for God and his commitment to his nation are not con- flicting concepts but rather complementary expressions of his faith. Islam encourages Mus- lims to actively contrib- ute to promote peace, and work towards the better- ment of society. True love for God and Islam also entails exhibiting loyalty, respect, and de- votion to one’s country. Muslims are called upon to be responsible and law-abiding citizens, up- holding the principles of justice and fairness in their actions. It is crucial to clarify that Islam strictly prohibits taking the law into one’s own hands or engaging in any schemes or conspiracies against one’s nation. The religion advocates peace, justice, and the rule of law. Any grievances or concerns should be ad- dressed through legal and peaceful means within the framework of the country’s laws and insti- tutions. Islam teaches that individuals should strive to be law-abiding citizens, promoting har- mony and contributing positively to their socie- ties. In light of this un- derstanding, it is impor- tant for Indian Muslims to recognise that the CAA should not be viewed as a law against their community. The legislation aims to pro- vide a pathway to Indian citizenship for religious minorities facing perse- cution in neighbouring countries without affect- ing the status or rights of Indian Muslims. By em- bracing the teachings of Islam, Indian Muslims can appreciate the sig- nificance of loyalty to their nation and actively participate in fostering a harmonious and inclu- sive society. It is important for In- dian Muslims to under- stand that the CAA is not intended to target their community but rather to provide a legal frame- work for assisting perse- cuted religious minori- ties. By dispelling mis- conceptions and embrac- ing the teachings of Is- lam, Indian Muslims can cultivate a deeper sense of loyalty and actively contribute to the pro- gress, unity, and well- being of their country while upholding the prin- ciples of justice, peace, and the rule of law that Islam advocates.Through dialogue, understanding, and cooperation, Indian Muslims can play a cru- cial role in building a har- monious society that up- holds the values of inclu- sivity, religious freedom, and equal treatment for all its citizens. STOCK MARKET Foreign Institutional Investors crutch no longer needed for new rise First India Bureau Jaipur his week the In- dian stock mar- kets have once again reached their high- est level. The mood changed again for the foreign institutional in- vestors (FIIs) who had made purchases last week and FIIs also made a big sale of Rs 10081.08 crore, but the Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) also responded to this selling by purchasing Rs 10129.17 crore. De- spite the selling by FIIs, the Indian stock market again managed to touch new highs in the week ending on Thursday. The selling of FIIs can also be understood as the fact that there is no longer any special need for new investments from FIIs for the Indian stock markets to move forward. Indian investors are also now putting their trust in the stock market considering the pace of the country’s economy and those who invest smartly instead of following hearsay and constantly keep an eye on their investments are also earning. For those who do not have time to man- age shares after buying them, Systematic Invest- ment Plan i.e. SIP is proving to be a good me- dium. The figures for February 2024 are proof of this. In the month of February, investment in SIPthrough mutual funds crossed Rs 19186.58 crore for the first time, which was only Rs 18838.33 crore in the month of January. The number of SIP accounts also continued to in- crease in February and it increased by 49.79 lakh to reach 820.17 lakh. Fig- ures can be boring, but the truth is that crores of rupees are continuously coming into the stock market through SIP and this is the main reason for the continuous rise in the market.
