peech is sil-
ver, silence
is golden,” is
a common
expression.
There are times when it is
better to keep quiet than to
speak. Finding peace and
quiet in modern times can
be a challenge, but there
are numerous health ben-
efits to it.
Life is full of noises.
There are sounds from the
environment and a general
lack of quiet because dis-
tractions have now become
the norm. Incessant sounds
are making people unhap-
py and pushing them to
taking sleeping pills and
anti- depressants.
Many of us don’t get on
to embrace silence as much
as our world has become
increasingly digitized and
we are more dependent on
our devices. Having a few
minutes of silence is a rare
treat for most people.
Taking a break from ex-
ternal noises and internal
chatter and aiming for
some solitude can contrib-
ute to our well-being. But
for some, the fear of si-
lence makes them uncom-
fortable, because of being
used to noises.
When, though, is it ap-
propriate to keep quiet
rather than to speak? There
is propriety in remaining
silent in at least three areas
of life – as a mark of re-
spect, as evidence of dis-
cretion and as an aid to
meditation.
It is normally assumed
that when one is silent, the
person is taking it well, but
at times that may be due to
bottled up anxiety and suf-
fering in silence. Such
stress causes emotional
toil. In such a case, stating
grievances calmly, helps.
What if, someone tries
to draw us into pointless
arguments? It is best to
keep a purposeful silence
and avoid them. Else, they
can side-track us from far
more important tasks. Be-
ing a silent listener is a
mark of respect. A person
with discernment keeps si-
lent when provoked. The
fewer the words spoken,
the less the chance of com-
mitting an indiscretion.
The discreet person is
not hot-headed, rushing
into every situation with-
out thinking. When silent,
one can carefully think of
the possible outcomes be-
fore making any commit-
ments and is able to main-
tain more peaceful rela-
tions with others.
To think soundly and de-
cisively requires that one
meditates on problems be-
fore they arise. One cannot
take the attitude to post-
pone it and worry about
that when the time comes.
Proper advance thinking
strengthens one to face
life’s challenges wisely.
How does one wade
through myriad of possi-
bilities and pick out the
best course of action?
Snap decisions are often
regretted later. It takes
time to meditate, or think
seriously about a matter.
But it is time well-spent.
The more one concen-
trates on positive matters,
the more will this be re-
flected in one’s speech and
actions. It deters a person
from giving unbalanced or
senseless responses. One
will not be speaking just
from the top of his head,
but would weigh all the
factors involved, taking all
circumstances into consid-
eration.
Meditation, during quiet
periods, can engender
modesty and humility
within us. One must have
facts to meditate on, and to
see things in their proper
perspective. Thinking with
an empty mind is like a
shower that passes quickly
and soon dries up - mo-
mentarily refreshing.
When meditation is done
on a deeper level, connect-
ing new thoughts with old
ones, it becomes like a
steady rain that sinks in
and develops maturity.
Silently meditating upon
specific things, reviewing
every small detail mentally
while walking or sitting in
quiet area aids in imbed-
ding information more
deeply. One gets a clear
picture of matters.
Silence is important for
one’s health just as exer-
cise and nourishment are.
Quiet contemplation also
has a positive effect on im-
proving memory.
Moments of silence
awakens sensitivity to the
environment around. Tak-
ing a quiet walk away from
noise reduces mental fa-
tigue and helps one to feel
rejuvenated and relaxed.
Periods of silence en-
hances creativity, making
the mind calmer to make
better decisions with clar-
ity and awareness. Imbib-
ing silence gives the mind
and body a break and
brings with it relief from
stress. Basking in the quiet
moments of early morning
can set the mood for the
rest of the day and give a
peaceful boost.
Noise pollution is a
modern plague that affects
mental health. Also, the
noise that goes on in the
mind as one copes with a
busy life. Cultivating si-
lence then becomes im-
perative. Escaping noise at
all is hard, but reserving
few minutes of calm in a
day is restorative and can
provide an environment for
healthy self-examination.
Yes, there is a time to
speak and there is a time to
remain quiet, and the dis-
cerning person appreciates
the difference.

TRADE AGREEMENT
WITH EFTA GOOD
FOR DEVELOPMENT
Mamata ditches Cong,
to go solo in Bengal
t took 15 years of work for Indian and four
European countries to sign a Free Trade
Agreement. The four nations---Norway, Ice-
land, Switzerland and Liechtenstein---will make an
investment of $100 billion in return for removal of
import tariffs on most of their industrial products.
This is India’s first free trade agreement with Western
countries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the
agreement “a watershed moment” for India and the
other signatories as it aims to wean investment away
from China. Vietnam, Mexico and a few other coun-
tries are giving competition to India in attracting in-
vestments.
India’s 18 percent tariff is higher than in other coun-
tries and it has a trade deficit with most of its trading
partners.TheTrade and Economic PartnershipAgree-
ment (TEPA) with the European Free Trade Associa-
tion (EFTA) would boost India’s services sector, Food
Processing, Engineering and Pharma.
More importantly, with the prospect of huge in-
vestments the deal offers hope for the country’s pro-
gress just before the parliamentary elections.
I
s was expected, INDIAbloc suffered its big-
gest jolt in West Bengal where Mamata Ba-
nerjee announced a full list of 42 Trinamool
Congress candidates leaving not even a single seat
for the Congress party. The opposition bloc which,
besides Congress, also includes the CPI-M will have
to fight a four-cornered contest with the BJP. The
saffron party, which won 18 of the 42 seats in 2019,
would relish the contest as it has cornered the Trina-
mool Congress over Sandeshkhali and corruption
and could comfortably overtake West Bengal’s rul-
ing party’s Lok Sabha tally of 22 after the split in
opposition votes.

The progress is slow
in Maharashtra. In
Bihar, the seat-shar-

be thrashed out.
Lok Sabha elec-
tion dates could be
announced any time now and Congress has a lot of
catching up to do. Prime Minister Narendra Modi
has criss-crossed the country launching a tunnel
here, an airport there and inspecting the development
work at another place. His pre-election schedule has
been hectic whereas the Opposition is conspicuous
by its invisibility on the ground. In its previous ava-
tar the Bharat Jodo yatra had no mojo, and it is un-
likely to have any impact this time too.
At present the Opposition appears more divided
than together and unprepared for the electoral battle
with a dominant party.

accessibility to rural and
remote areas in a shorter
time.
“There will be an ex-
ponential demand for pri-
vate jets and the demand
is expected to outstrip the
availability of chartered
planes and helicopters.
There is a limited supply
of chartered planes and
helicopters,” Club One
Air CEO Rajan Mehra
told PTI.
With increased de-
mand, some players will
be taking chartered
planes and helicopters on
lease during the general
elections for which the
dates are expected to be
announced in the coming
days.
Chartered plane and
helicopter services are
charged on an hourly ba-

Business Aircraft Op-

(BAOA) Managing Di-
rector Captain R K Bali
told PTI that during the
Lok Sabha polls, the de-
mand for private char-
tered planes and helicop-
ters is expected to in-
crease by 30 to 40 per
cent compared to the
previous elections.
Official data showed
that there were 112 Non-
Scheduled Operators
(NSOPs) at the end of
December 2023.
Generally, NSOPs are
entities that do not have a
particular fixed schedule
and fly when there is a
requirement.
Since the demand will
be high, players are ex-
pected to take planes on
lease for chartered opera-
tions, especially helicop-
ters, Bali said and added
that there are around 111-
112 NSOPs and out of
them, 40-50 per cent op-
erate single aircraft.

Mobile phone manufacturing scripts unmatched success story
Agencies
New Delhi
he growth of
Mobile Phone
production in
India over a decade is be-
ing described as an un-
matched success story in
the manufacturing sector.
While 78% of all the
mobile phones sold in the
country in 2014 were im-
ported, today 97% of the
mobiles phones are man-
ufactured in India.
According to industry
body, India Cellular
Electronics Associarion,
ICEA, mobile phone
production, in value
terms has surged from
Rs 18,900 crores in 2014-
15 to an estimated Rs
4.10 lakh crores in FY24,
registering over 20 fold
increase.
Cumulatively, more
than 245 crore mobile
phone sets have been
produced in India during
the last 10 years.
In 2014-15, mobile
phone exports from India
were a mere Rs.1,556
crores. The industry ex-
pects to end FY24 with
an estimated export of
Rs.1,20,000 crores. Driv-
en by this export growth,
mobile phones have now
become India’s 5th larg-
est export as an individu-
al commodity.
This exponential
growth in production, ex-
ports and self-sufficiency
stems from a conducive
policy environment, and a
close working relation-
ship between industry and
key Government Minis-
tries such as Ministry of
Electronics IT, DPIIT,
Ministry of Commerce,
Ministry of Finance, NITI
Aayog and the PMO.
In May 2017, the Indi-
an government an-
nounced the Phased Man-
ufacturing Programme
(PMP) to promote the
domestic production of
mobile handsets.
This initiative helped
in building a robust indig-
enous mobile manufac-
turing ecosystem in India
and incentivized large-
scale manufacturing.
From just 2 mobile
phone factories in 2014,
India now has become the
second largest mobile
phone producer in the
world.
The industry expects to end FY24 with an estimated export of `1,20,000 crore.

Netanyahu ‘hurting Israel’ by not
preventing civilian deaths: Biden
Agencies
Wilmington, Del
President Joe Biden said
Saturday that he be-
lieves Israeli Prime
Minister Benjamin Net-
anyahu is “hurting Israel
more than helping Isra-
el” in how he is ap-
proaching its war against
Hamas in Gaza.
The U.S. leader ex-
pressed support for Is-
rael’s right to pursue
Hamas after the Oct. 7
attack, but said of Net-
anyahu that “he must
pay more attention to
the innocent lives being
lost as a consequence of
the actions taken.”
Biden has for months
warned that Israel risks
losing international sup-
port over mounting ci-
vilian casualties in
Gaza, and the latest re-
marks in an interview
with MSNBC’s Jona-
than Capehart pointed to
the increasingly strained
relationship between the
two leaders.
Biden said of the
death toll in Gaza, “it’s
contrary to what Israel
stands for. And I think
it’s a big mistake.”
Biden said a potential
Israeli invasion of the
Gaza city of Rafah,
where more than 1.3 mil-
lion Palestinians are shel-
tering, is “a red line” for
him, but said he would
not cut off weapons like
the Iron Dome missile
interceptors which pro-
tect the Israeli civilian
populace from rocket at-
tacks in the region.
“It is a red line,” he
said, when asked about
Rafah, “but I’m never
going to leave Israel.
The defense of Israel is
still critical, so there’s
no red line I’m going to
cut off all weapons so
they don’t have the Iron
Dome to protect them.”
US President Joe Biden criticises Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s
approach, expressing concern for the death toll in Gaza.

  • 4. peech is sil- ver, silence is golden,” is a common expression. There are times when it is better to keep quiet than to speak. Finding peace and quiet in modern times can be a challenge, but there are numerous health ben- efits to it. Life is full of noises. There are sounds from the environment and a general lack of quiet because dis- tractions have now become the norm. Incessant sounds are making people unhap- py and pushing them to taking sleeping pills and anti- depressants. Many of us don’t get on to embrace silence as much as our world has become increasingly digitized and we are more dependent on our devices. Having a few minutes of silence is a rare treat for most people. Taking a break from ex- ternal noises and internal chatter and aiming for some solitude can contrib- ute to our well-being. But for some, the fear of si- lence makes them uncom- fortable, because of being used to noises. When, though, is it ap- propriate to keep quiet rather than to speak? There is propriety in remaining silent in at least three areas of life – as a mark of re- spect, as evidence of dis- cretion and as an aid to meditation. It is normally assumed that when one is silent, the person is taking it well, but at times that may be due to bottled up anxiety and suf- fering in silence. Such stress causes emotional toil. In such a case, stating grievances calmly, helps. What if, someone tries to draw us into pointless arguments? It is best to keep a purposeful silence and avoid them. Else, they can side-track us from far more important tasks. Be- ing a silent listener is a mark of respect. A person with discernment keeps si- lent when provoked. The fewer the words spoken, the less the chance of com- mitting an indiscretion. The discreet person is not hot-headed, rushing into every situation with- out thinking. When silent, one can carefully think of the possible outcomes be- fore making any commit- ments and is able to main- tain more peaceful rela- tions with others. To think soundly and de- cisively requires that one meditates on problems be- fore they arise. One cannot take the attitude to post- pone it and worry about that when the time comes. Proper advance thinking strengthens one to face life’s challenges wisely. How does one wade through myriad of possi- bilities and pick out the best course of action? Snap decisions are often regretted later. It takes time to meditate, or think seriously about a matter. But it is time well-spent. The more one concen- trates on positive matters, the more will this be re- flected in one’s speech and actions. It deters a person from giving unbalanced or senseless responses. One will not be speaking just from the top of his head, but would weigh all the factors involved, taking all circumstances into consid- eration. Meditation, during quiet periods, can engender modesty and humility within us. One must have facts to meditate on, and to see things in their proper perspective. Thinking with an empty mind is like a shower that passes quickly and soon dries up - mo- mentarily refreshing. When meditation is done on a deeper level, connect- ing new thoughts with old ones, it becomes like a steady rain that sinks in and develops maturity. Silently meditating upon specific things, reviewing every small detail mentally while walking or sitting in quiet area aids in imbed- ding information more deeply. One gets a clear picture of matters. Silence is important for one’s health just as exer- cise and nourishment are. Quiet contemplation also has a positive effect on im- proving memory. Moments of silence awakens sensitivity to the environment around. Tak- ing a quiet walk away from noise reduces mental fa- tigue and helps one to feel rejuvenated and relaxed. Periods of silence en- hances creativity, making the mind calmer to make better decisions with clar- ity and awareness. Imbib- ing silence gives the mind and body a break and brings with it relief from stress. Basking in the quiet moments of early morning can set the mood for the rest of the day and give a peaceful boost. Noise pollution is a modern plague that affects mental health. Also, the noise that goes on in the mind as one copes with a busy life. Cultivating si- lence then becomes im- perative. Escaping noise at all is hard, but reserving few minutes of calm in a day is restorative and can provide an environment for healthy self-examination. Yes, there is a time to speak and there is a time to remain quiet, and the dis- cerning person appreciates the difference. There is propriety in remaining silent in at least three areas of life – as a mark of respect, as evidence of discretion and as an aid to meditation IN-DEPTH TRADE AGREEMENT WITH EFTA GOOD FOR DEVELOPMENT Mamata ditches Cong, to go solo in Bengal t took 15 years of work for Indian and four European countries to sign a Free Trade Agreement. The four nations---Norway, Ice- land, Switzerland and Liechtenstein---will make an investment of $100 billion in return for removal of import tariffs on most of their industrial products. This is India’s first free trade agreement with Western countries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the agreement “a watershed moment” for India and the other signatories as it aims to wean investment away from China. Vietnam, Mexico and a few other coun- tries are giving competition to India in attracting in- vestments. India’s 18 percent tariff is higher than in other coun- tries and it has a trade deficit with most of its trading partners.TheTrade and Economic PartnershipAgree- ment (TEPA) with the European Free Trade Associa- tion (EFTA) would boost India’s services sector, Food Processing, Engineering and Pharma. More importantly, with the prospect of huge in- vestments the deal offers hope for the country’s pro- gress just before the parliamentary elections. I s was expected, INDIAbloc suffered its big- gest jolt in West Bengal where Mamata Ba- nerjee announced a full list of 42 Trinamool Congress candidates leaving not even a single seat for the Congress party. The opposition bloc which, besides Congress, also includes the CPI-M will have to fight a four-cornered contest with the BJP. The saffron party, which won 18 of the 42 seats in 2019, would relish the contest as it has cornered the Trina- mool Congress over Sandeshkhali and corruption and could comfortably overtake West Bengal’s rul- ing party’s Lok Sabha tally of 22 after the split in opposition votes. Congress is lucky to have stitched seat- sharing deals with the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh, with the DMK in Ta- mil Nadu, with the Aam Aadmi Party in Gujarat, Haryana, Delhi, Chandigarh and Goa and with the Indian Union Mus- lim League (IUML). The progress is slow in Maharashtra. In Bihar, the seat-shar- ing formula is yet to be thrashed out. Lok Sabha elec- tion dates could be announced any time now and Congress has a lot of catching up to do. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has criss-crossed the country launching a tunnel here, an airport there and inspecting the development work at another place. His pre-election schedule has been hectic whereas the Opposition is conspicuous by its invisibility on the ground. In its previous ava- tar the Bharat Jodo yatra had no mojo, and it is un- likely to have any impact this time too. At present the Opposition appears more divided than together and unprepared for the electoral battle with a dominant party.
