There are benefits of hav-

IN-DEPTH
PUSHING RELUCTANT
PRIVATE SECTOR
TO INVEST MORE
or the Indian economy to move to the next
level the corporate sector has to provide the
booster shot. In an earlier speech Finance
Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had likened India Inc
to Hanuman who needed to be reminded of his po-
tential. Chief Economic Advisor V. Anantha Nag-
eswaran also urged the industry to stop focusing too
much on the uncertain demand environment, which
may remain unchanged in the coming years due to
global headwinds, and boost investment. The indus-
try’s reluctance to increase capital expenditure per-
sists, leading to a fall in corporate investment.
Interestingly, apart from external factors high un-
employment and low consumption are reasons for
low private sector investment which is needed to
increase employment, create income and push con-
sumption. Forthcoming elections may have also
played on the investors’ minds.
This situation is expected to change as the finance
minister has “passed the baton” to the private sector.
Lower borrowings by the government will allow it to
provide the much-needed credit to the private sector.
F
COURT VERDICTS SEAL
IMRAN KHAN’S FATE
n an expected turn of events, former Pakistan
Prime Minister Imran Khan finds himself
entangled in a legal quagmire, receiving
back-to-back jail terms. On Tuesday he, along with
former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi,
faced the brunt of justice with 10-year jail sentences
under the Official SecretsAct. The charges stemmed
from the alleged sharing of a confidential state com-
munication, suggesting a foreign power’s desire for
Imran’s removal. Also known as the cipher case, it
concerns national security.
The following day added another layer to the pre-
dicament as the cricketer-turned-politician and his
wife, Bushra Bibi,
were handed a 14-
year jail term in the
Toshakhana case.
This case revolves
around the alleged il-
legal sale of state
gifts, marking a se-
vere blow to Imran’s
political standing.
The accompanying
10-year ban on hold-
ing any public office
virtually seals the
fate of the once-cele-
brated cricketer.
These legal blows
couldn’t have come
at a more critical
juncture, with Paki-
stan’s general elec-
tions looming less than a week away. Imran Khan’s
legal team is gearing up to challenge the verdicts in
the Islamabad High Court, but time is of the essence.
Imran’s nomination papers were rejected last year
raising questions about the fairness of the electoral
process. The impending elections cast a shadow over
the star-crossed ex-prime minister’s political future,
and the challenges ahead seem formidable.
The elections also point to the Pakistan army estab-
lishment’s control over the country’s politics. No Paki-
stani prime minister has survived without the blessings
of the army top brass. The unfolding drama only con-
firms the view that democracy in Pakistan is a sham.

fter a shock-
ing defeat in
the first Test,
India is
grinding its
way to ascendancy in the
second Test. While every-
one expected before the
series that the margin of
victory can be as high as
5-0, the over optimism has
certainly come down. It
was evident in the way the
Indian camp batting first
set about scoring runs in a
rather circumspect man-
ner. All batsmen got starts
but failed to convert them
into a big score. But the
day was made truly special
by the young southpawYa-
shasvi Jaiswal who re-
mained unbeaten at the end
of the opening day on 179
and is now India’s biggest
hope to put up a strong first
innings total.
Winning the toss, it was
a no brainer for Indian cap-
tainRohitSharmatochoose
to bat first. The usual tem-
plate on Indian pitches is to
batwell,postbigscoresand
thenputopposingteamsun-
der pressure in the second
innings when the pitch be-
gins deteriorating.But to
achieve that, the batsmen
oncesetneedtocarryonfor
longer knocks. Unfortu-
nately, no one paid heed to
Indian Head Coach, Rahul
Dravid’s words after the
first match where he said
that his batters need to cap-
italize on starts and make
big runs!
Rohit began his innings
in an uncharacteristic man-
ner. He was overtly watch-
ful on a flat track against
an inexperienced bowling
line up barring James An-
derson. His misery came to
an end after he was caught
down the leg slip on 14 off
41 balls to the debutant
Shoaib Bashir. The open-
ing partnership was of 40
runs and interestingly,
each partnership after that
till the 5th wicket was at
least 49 runs or more.
Yashasvi Jaiswal,
though, remained the solo
star of the day as he stole
the spotlight with his
strokeplay, guiding India
to a position of some
strength. His scintillating
179 not out from 257 balls
showcased a fearless ap-
proach, setting the tone for
India’s redemption after
their first-Test setback.
Jaiswal’s innings,
marked by a mix of de-
fence and aggression,
stood out as the day’s out-
standing performance.
From his four off Joe
Root’s first ball to the
monstrous six that brought
up his second Test century,
Jaiswal was a class apart.
His fearless batting pro-
vided the much-needed
impetus for an otherwise
listless India, offering a
sharp counter to the tricky
challenges that the English
bowlers were presenting.
England’s resilience in
the field deserves a lot of
appreciation. Despite a
tough day on a pitch which
was more suitable for bat-
ting, the visitors claimed
six crucial wickets. It
stopped India from run-
ning away with the game.
Shoaib Bashir showcased
a calm temperament as he
picked up another crucial
wicket after Rohit. At the
fag end of the day with just
an hour left to play, Axar
hit one from Shoaib
straight in the hands of Re-
han Ahmed at point.
Besides Yashasvi, the
only other aggressive
spark came from India’s
wicketkeeper batsman,
K.S.Bharat who came out
to bat with all guns blazing
and hit 2 fours and a six in
his brief stay of 17 from 23
balls. But his aggression
ultimately got the better of
him as he got out just 10
mins before the day’s
close.Along with the spin-
ners, James Anderson, the
veteran at 41, displayed
ageless mastery, providing
control and guile. His cru-
cial wicket of Shubman
Gill typified his impact,
and his economy rate of
1.76 proved instrumental
in containing India’s bat-
ting lineup.
Apart from Jaiswal, the
rest of India’s batting pre-
sented a mixed bag, with
six dismissals between 14
and 34. As the day unfold-
ed, Jaiswal’s sublime form
overshadowed individual
struggles within the Indian
lineup. The young bats-
man’s career-best innings,
despite battling cramps to-
ward the end, showcased
his determination to an-
chor India to a safe first
innings score. In an era
when even the most sea-
soned and accomplished
batsmen are struggling to
keep pace with the varying
demands of white ball and
red ball batting, Yashasvi
seems a rare batter who is
comfortable in all formats.
He has already done well
in ODIs and T20s and his
performance in Test crick-
et now suggests that Ya-
shasvi Jaiswal is a special
talent who looks cutting
edge in every format!
After being ‘bazzballed’
in the first Test, fans expect
a lot more intent fromTeam
India. It will be interesting
to see in the next couple of
days whether Jaiswal has
doneenoughtocompensate
for team mates who threw
theirwicketsatcrucialjunc-
tures or whether England
will claw their way back
into the game. Either way, it
will be a fascinating watch

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief
Minister Mamata Banerjee
on Friday dubbed the interim
budget for 2024-25 as the “antim” (last)
budget of the BJP government at the
Centre, indicating that the saffron party
will taste defeat in the Lok Sabha polls
this year.Banerjee made the remark
during a dharna in Kolkata, which
began earlier in the day to demand the
state’s “dues” from the Centre for vari-
ous social welfare schemes.“It is not an
interim budget, but the ‘antim’ budget,”
she asserted.
New Delhi: Congress leader

any vision nor any plan to create new
jobs in the Centre’s interim Budget.
“Unemployment has broken all records.
Big institutes of the country such as
IIMs and IITs are facing the challenge
of placements. There is neither any
vision nor any plan in the budget to cre-
ate new jobs and deal with unemploy-
ment. The biggest misfortune is that
the finance minister did not say a single

“Will hear Russia-Ukraine genocide case”
Agencies
The Hague
The United Nations’
highest court on Friday
ruled that it will hear a
case in which Kyiv has
asked it to declare it did
not commit genocide in
eastern Ukraine, as Rus-
sia claimed as a pretext
for attacking its smaller
neighbour.
Ukraine brought the
case to the International
Court of Justice (ICJ),
also known as the World
Court,daysafterRussia’s
full-scale invasion of
Ukraine in February
2022. Judges found the
court had jurisdiction to
hear just a small part of
the original case. The
judges threw out a re-
quest by Ukraine to rule
on whether or not the
Russianinvasionviolated
the 1948 Genocide Con-
vention. Instead the panel
of16judgessaidtheywill
only rule at a later stage
onwhetherornotUkraine
committed genocide in
the Donetsk and Luhansk
areas of eastern Ukraine
now occupied by Russia.
“It is important that
the court will decide on
the issue that Ukraine is
not responsible for some
mythical genocide which
the Russian Federation
falsely alleged that
Ukraine has committed,”
Ukraine’s representative
Anton Korynevych told
journalists at the ICJ.

In an earlier speech Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had likened India Inc to Hanuman who needed to be reminded of his po- tential. Chief Economic Advisor V. Anantha Nag- eswaran also urged the industry to stop focusing too much on the uncertain demand environment, which may remain unchanged in the coming years due to global headwinds, and boost investment. The indus- try’s reluctance to increase capital expenditure per- sists, leading to a fall in corporate investment. Interestingly, apart from external factors high un- employment and low consumption are reasons for low private sector investment which is needed to increase employment, create income and push con- sumption. Forthcoming elections may have also played on the investors’ minds. This situation is expected to change as the finance minister has “passed the baton” to the private sector. Lower borrowings by the government will allow it to provide the much-needed credit to the private sector. F COURT VERDICTS SEAL IMRAN KHAN’S FATE n an expected turn of events, former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan finds himself entangled in a legal quagmire, receiving back-to-back jail terms. On Tuesday he, along with former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, faced the brunt of justice with 10-year jail sentences under the Official SecretsAct. The charges stemmed from the alleged sharing of a confidential state com- munication, suggesting a foreign power’s desire for Imran’s removal. Also known as the cipher case, it concerns national security. The following day added another layer to the pre- dicament as the cricketer-turned-politician and his wife, Bushra Bibi, were handed a 14- year jail term in the Toshakhana case. This case revolves around the alleged il- legal sale of state gifts, marking a se- vere blow to Imran’s political standing. The accompanying 10-year ban on hold- ing any public office virtually seals the fate of the once-cele- brated cricketer. These legal blows couldn’t have come at a more critical juncture, with Paki- stan’s general elec- tions looming less than a week away. Imran Khan’s legal team is gearing up to challenge the verdicts in the Islamabad High Court, but time is of the essence. Imran’s nomination papers were rejected last year raising questions about the fairness of the electoral process. The impending elections cast a shadow over the star-crossed ex-prime minister’s political future, and the challenges ahead seem formidable. The elections also point to the Pakistan army estab- lishment’s control over the country’s politics. No Paki- stani prime minister has survived without the blessings of the army top brass. The unfolding drama only con- firms the view that democracy in Pakistan is a sham. I Imran’s nomination papers were rejected last year raising questions about the fairness of poll process. The impending elections cast a shadow over star-crossed ex-PM’s political future, and the challenges ahead seem formidable. While every- one expected before the series that the margin of victory can be as high as 5-0, the over optimism has certainly come down. It was evident in the way the Indian camp batting first set about scoring runs in a rather circumspect man- ner. All batsmen got starts but failed to convert them into a big score. But the day was made truly special by the young southpawYa- shasvi Jaiswal who re- mained unbeaten at the end of the opening day on 179 and is now India’s biggest hope to put up a strong first innings total. Winning the toss, it was a no brainer for Indian cap- tainRohitSharmatochoose to bat first. The usual tem- plate on Indian pitches is to batwell, postbigscoresand thenputopposingteamsun- der pressure in the second innings when the pitch be- gins deteriorating. But to achieve that, the batsmen oncesetneedtocarryonfor longer knocks. Unfortu- nately, no one paid heed to Indian Head Coach, Rahul Dravid’s words after the first match where he said that his batters need to cap- italize on starts and make big runs! Rohit began his innings in an uncharacteristic man- ner. He was overtly watch- ful on a flat track against an inexperienced bowling line up barring James An- derson. His misery came to an end after he was caught down the leg slip on 14 off 41 balls to the debutant Shoaib Bashir. The open- ing partnership was of 40 runs and interestingly, each partnership after that till the 5th wicket was at least 49 runs or more. Yashasvi Jaiswal, though, remained the solo star of the day as he stole the spotlight with his strokeplay, guiding India to a position of some strength. His scintillating 179 not out from 257 balls showcased a fearless ap- proach, setting the tone for India’s redemption after their first-Test setback. Jaiswal’s innings, marked by a mix of de- fence and aggression, stood out as the day’s out- standing performance. From his four off Joe Root’s first ball to the monstrous six that brought up his second Test century, Jaiswal was a class apart. His fearless batting pro- vided the much-needed impetus for an otherwise listless India, offering a sharp counter to the tricky challenges that the English bowlers were presenting. England’s resilience in the field deserves a lot of appreciation. Despite a tough day on a pitch which was more suitable for bat- ting, the visitors claimed six crucial wickets. It stopped India from run- ning away with the game. Shoaib Bashir showcased a calm temperament as he picked up another crucial wicket after Rohit. At the fag end of the day with just an hour left to play, Axar hit one from Shoaib straight in the hands of Re- han Ahmed at point. Besides Yashasvi, the only other aggressive spark came from India’s wicketkeeper batsman, K.S.Bharat who came out to bat with all guns blazing and hit 2 fours and a six in his brief stay of 17 from 23 balls. But his aggression ultimately got the better of him as he got out just 10 mins before the day’s close.Along with the spin- ners, James Anderson, the veteran at 41, displayed ageless mastery, providing control and guile. His cru- cial wicket of Shubman Gill typified his impact, and his economy rate of 1.76 proved instrumental in containing India’s bat- ting lineup. Apart from Jaiswal, the rest of India’s batting pre- sented a mixed bag, with six dismissals between 14 and 34. As the day unfold- ed, Jaiswal’s sublime form overshadowed individual struggles within the Indian lineup. The young bats- man’s career-best innings, despite battling cramps to- ward the end, showcased his determination to an- chor India to a safe first innings score. In an era when even the most sea- soned and accomplished batsmen are struggling to keep pace with the varying demands of white ball and red ball batting, Yashasvi seems a rare batter who is comfortable in all formats. He has already done well in ODIs and T20s and his performance in Test crick- et now suggests that Ya- shasvi Jaiswal is a special talent who looks cutting edge in every format! After being ‘bazzballed’ in the first Test, fans expect a lot more intent fromTeam India. Hitting out at former prime minister Indira Gandhi, he said despite giving the slogan of ‘gar- ibi hatao,’poverty could not be eradicated by her Congress government. “If any responsible in- dividual has deceived this country, it is the late Indira Gandhi who gave the ‘garibi hatao’slogan. If poverty had vanished, who are the 80 crore peo- ple we have inherited and to whom Modi Ji is providing five kilograms of rice and wheat?” Baghel said. The 10 a.m. meeting at the office of the Leader of Opposition and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge had sparse attendance, reflecting the diminished ranks of the Opposition coalition. Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav on Friday said the Congress and the Akhilesh Yadav-led party have finalised their seat-sharing agreement in Uttar Pradesh. SP will declare more candidates soon for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. “We have declared 16 seats. We will declare more seats in a couple of days. So on and so forth. The Congress and the SP have reached a final agreement in Uttar Pradesh,” Yadav said. Congress general sec- retary Jairam Ramesh claimed that the Rahul Gandhi-led ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ will be very beneficial in the context of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, though it is a political programme and not an election campaign. “INDIA alliance is for the general elections and not for assembly polls of West Bengal or Maha- rashtra or any other state,” he said. IT IS NOT INTERIM BUDGET, BUT ‘ANTIM’ BUDGET OF BJP: DIDI FM DIDN’T SAY SINGLE WORD ON UNEMPLOYMENT: PRIYANKA Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday dubbed the interim budget for 2024-25 as the “antim” (last) budget of the BJP government at the Centre, indicating that the saffron party will taste defeat in the Lok Sabha polls this year.Banerjee made the remark during a dharna in Kolkata, which began earlier in the day to demand the state’s “dues” from the Centre for vari- ous social welfare schemes.“It is not an interim budget, but the ‘antim’ budget,” she asserted. Big institutes of the country such as IIMs and IITs are facing the challenge of placements. There is neither any vision nor any plan in the budget to cre- ate new jobs and deal with unemploy- ment. PTI New Delhi Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Fri- day attacked the BJP, saying if it can “rig” the Chandigarh mayoral polls, it could go to any extent in assembly and LS polls. He was address- ing AAP leaders and workers at a protest at the party’s office. The dem- onstration was planned in front of BJP HQs, a few hundred metres away on the DDU Marg, but AAP members could not reach there because of heavy police deployment and barricading. The world’s biggest party was caught on camera ‘stealing’ votes in Chandigarh mayoral polls, Kejriwal said. “In last few years, we had heard that BJP rigs polls.
