bout 80 crore poor in the country got a wind-
fall in the form of free ration for another five
years under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kaly-
anAnnaYojana. The announcement about the exten-
sion of the facility was made by Prime Minister Nar-
endra Modi at an election rally in Madhya Pradesh
prompting the Opposition to attack the government
for having failed to end hunger in its rule of over nine
years. Continuation of the free ration scheme is proof
that the economy is in distress. The extension of the
welfare scheme is to ensure that no poor household
“goes to sleep hungry”. But the Opposition brought
up the issue of “revdis (freebies)” saying that the term
should not be used any more.
The Opposition, mainly the Congress in MP, is
caught in a bind. It cannot oppose the scheme nor can
it let the announcement pass without any criticism.
Not only MP, the announcement could sway voters
in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh as well.

GAMBLING APP BREWS
A POLITICAL STORM
ne fat Indian wedding led the Enforcement
Directorate to unearth a multi-crore gaming
app Mahadev started by a vegetable vendor.
The wedding itself took place in Ras Al-Khaimah, a
city in United Arab Emirates, in February this year
and Sourabh Chandrakar, the juice vendor from
Bhilai in Chhattisgarh, was the groom. The lavish
wedding, which cost a whopping Rs 200 crore, was
graced by several Bollywood actors who are now on
ED’s radar. The Mahadev Online Betting app pro-
moted by Sourabh and Ravi Uppal (also of Bhilai)
allows live gambling in various sports like poker,
cricket, badminton, tennis and football besides sev-
eral card games.
The promoters are
now estimated to be
worth Rs 5,000 crore
and are suspected to
be into hawala opera-
tions. The app has
been banned by the
IT ministry but not
before it brewed a
political storm over
the ED’s allegation
that Chhattisgarh
Chief Minister Bhu-
pesh Baghel was
paid Rs 508 crore by
the promoters. The
allegation assumes
huge political significance in the poll-bound state
where the BJP is said to be on a weak wicket.
Baghel countered the ED’s allegation: “I feel
amazed that for months the ED had been probing this
app but still it was operational” and hoped that Uppal
and Chandrakar will be arrested soon. Chhattisgarh
Police was the first to issue a lookout circular against
the app promoters.” Joining the issue with Baghel
Rajeev Chandrasekhar, MoS in charge of IT, said that
the state did not ban the app despite having powers to
do so. Is it time for Election Commission to step in”?

their mobile

this rate you will have used
approximately 30 phones
in your lifetime. Similarly,
other electronic and electri-
cal products go out of the
market with changing
models and due to consum-
erist culture, the common
man makes changes in the
name of advanced use or
fashion. While doing all
this, one does not even re-
alize the fact that How
much carbon would have
been emitted during the
manufacturing of the item?
According to a rough esti-
mate, about 80 percent of
the carbon emission impact
of any smartphone occurs
during its manufacturing
process and the remaining
during use, i.e. every time
the product is replaced, the
more severe the carbon
emission impact will be.
According to recently re-
leased data, last September
was the hottest September
of the century. If there is
anything directly responsi-
ble for this, it is pollution.
There is a Right to Re-
pair campaign going on all
over the world with the aim
of extending the life and
making use till end of life
of various consumable
products. While the objec-
tive of this campaign is en-
vironmental protection, it is
also aimed at ending the
monopoly of the manufac-
turing companies in repair-
ing these products and thus
providing economic relief
to end consumer. This
movement is basically be-
ing run against the monop-
oly prevailing in the repair
of electric and electronic
and automobile products.
At present, for repair of
products, one has to com-
pletely depend on the place
authorized by its manufac-
turer, otherwise its limited
warranty also gets voided.
It was also found that many
companies have strategy of
complete obsolescence of
their earlier products so that
due to lack of spare parts,
the consumer has no option
but to throw away.This can
also be termed as a market-
ing conspiracy. This is why
companies like Apple and
Microsoftstronglyopposed
the movement. As a result
of the law and pressure ap-
plied inAmerica,Apple has
recently agreed to the Right
to Repair. Due to the mo-
nopoly of big manufactur-
ers, the local economy
along with micro and small
repairmen, skilled engi-
neers and assistants all over
the world was facing a cri-
sis. This monopoly was
also having an adverse ef-
fect on the end consumer as
he had to pay un-arbitrary
high price as per the de-
mand of the manufacturer.
There was no other option
except to get repaired at
non negotiable cost.
It is noteworthy that
about 50 million tonnes of
e-waste is generated every
year in the whole world and
India alone produces one-
third of that i.e. 16 million
tonnes. Due to lack of re-
sources, only one third is
getting recycled or pro-
cessed. This quantity is
equivalent to 800 laptops
being thrown away every
second. If we analyze toxic
waste, 70 percent of it is e-
waste.Whataseriousthreat
to the entire humanity, is
being created by us, be-
cause of our irresponsible
consumption and consum-
erist culture. Keeping these
facts in view, the founda-
tion of the Right to Repair
movement was laid so that
this increasing number
could be curbed. There are
many other reasons for the
hindrance in curbing pro-
duction but promoting re-
pair culture till end of life is
an effective step to reduce
theamountofe-wasteatthe
consumer level on a large
scale. According to esti-
mates, if the consumer gets
the facility of easy repair,
then the replacement of
electronic products can be
reduced by more than half.
Most of the consumers to-
day replace the items be-
cause there is no repair fa-
cility, if there is any, those
are authorised by manufac-
turer At limited sites. If he
gets the repair done else-
where, there is a fear of
voiding the warranty and
the fear of the quality of the
parts being used for repair
being genuine or fake. He
prefers to change the prod-
uct rather than getting
trapped in all these com-
plexities and webs.
The basic purpose of
Right to Repair is to force
manufacturers to make
available parts, tools, diag-
nostic equipment, and all
information related to their
products to consumers and
all those who may use
them, to make repairs wide-
spread and To stop the ma-
terial going to the landfill.
With the legalization of this
right, the lifespan of vari-
ous items being used like
mobile phones, washing
machines, fridges etc. will
automatically increase and
indirectly household ex-
penditure will also be re-
duced. As a result of the
movementlaunchedbyThe
Repair Association, United
States ofAmerica and vari-
ous states have passed the
first Right to Fair Repair
law. New York is the first
state to adopt this law in the
United States. Now more
than half of the states of
America have given their
consent to this. Similarly,
United Kingdom,Australia
and European Union coun-
tries have also passed laws
to promote repair and give
the right to repair to the
consumer in view of the
circular economy. France
has taken a pioneer step in
this direction and has im-
posed the obligation on
manufacturers to mention
the repairability rating on
each product so that an ap-
propriate decision can be
taken at the time of pur-
chase. Under the rules
passed by the European
Union, the manufacturer
has been obliged to provide
related spare parts to all re-
pairers for a period of ten
years from the date of pro-
duction of the equipment.
In a unique initiative, re-
pair cafes have been set up
in Australia where the gen-
eral public can get their
products repaired free of
costbyskilledvolunteers.In
India, a committee has been
formedundertheConsumer
AffairsDepartmenttolegal-
ize the right to repair, so that
everypersoncanusehis/her
device for its entire life. Al-
though there is no law or
rule related to the right to
repair, but the Competition
Commission of India has In
the Shamsher Kataria Ver-
sus Honda CL Cars India
case, passed an order as
“givingtheauthorizedspare
parts only to designated
workshops was considered
an anti-competitive practice
anddirectionsweregivento

Due to the effective lob-
by of car manufacturers,
this decision could not
have widespread impact
and implementation. As a
result, even today most of
the consumers are depend-
ent on manufacturer au-
thorized sites only.

ABOUT THE
PORTAL
Recently, the Government
of India, in collaboration with
about 40 large companies,
has started a portal https://
righttorepairindia.gov.in to
provide right to repair, in
which under the LiFE Mis-
sion, products related to
agriculture farming, automo-
bile, electronic and consumer
durables are divided into
thrust categories. On this Por-
tal, The manufacturers have
been registered and provided
information about their ser-
vice network, warranty
and helpline numbers.
The companies registered
in this portal are mandated
to provide all the informa-
tion related to the product to
the consumers so that they
can get the repairs done by
themselves or by someone
else. Besides, new livelihood
possibilities have also been
created by connecting the
original equipment manufac-
turers and other buying and
selling related parties on this
portal. With all this happen-
ing, the most important thing
is for the common man to
be a responsible consumer.
Perhaps he can directly afford
to buy the new item, but may
be unaware of the longterm
losses it is causing. He is
generating toxins for himself,
his family and the entire living
being. Therefore, be deter-
mined to use your device as
long as possible till end of life
and get it repaired properly.
This will help in making
our Planet liveable.

COUNTING OF CATTLE
Uttar Pradesh govt to conduct cow census

conducting a comprehen-
sive census of cows in
three priority categories,
which include determin-
ing the number of desti-
tute animals with cattle
rearers, Kanha Upvan,
and abandoned ones on
the streets.
Chief Minister Yogi
Adityanath has issued an
order that the counting in
all three categories
should be conducted on a
priority basis. Following
this, a process of geo-
tagging should be imple-
mented.
In the first phase, the
counting of these cows
will be carried out. Sub-
sequently, in the next
phase, an action plan con-
cerning these cows will
be formulated and imple-
mented to ensure they are
provided with suitable
accommodations.
While the government
is dedicated to cattle con-
servation through Kanha
Upvan, equal emphasis is
laid on safeguarding
cows that roam on the
streets to prevent any in-
convenience to the com-
mon people and farmers.
Yogi Adityanath gov-
ernment’s continuous ef-
forts towards the protec-
tion of destitute cattle
are yielding satisfactory
results.
Presently, 11.89 lakh
cows are protected in
6,889 destitute cattle
breeding sites.
Notably, the ‘Mukhy-
amantri Sahbhagita Yo-
jana’ run for cow protec-
tion has also yielded
good results. Till now,
over 1.85 lakh cows have
been handed over to gau-
sevak under this scheme.
The amount currently
being provided at the rate
of Rs 30 per cow for the
maintenance of cows to
destitute cattle breeding
sites and all the families
serving the cows, was in-
creased to Rs 50 per cow
recently.

PARTY OF
n a few days,
all cities

will be lit up
with vibrant
lights and
houses across
the globe will glow with the
warmth of Diya. However,
festivities have already begun
in the B-town as Celebrity de-
signer Manish Malhotra threw
a star-studded extravaganza
on November 5 in Mumbai as
he invited Bollywood stars
and the talk of
the town, The Archies Gang.
As many stars embellished
the party with their presence,
it was definitely Sid-Kiara
who won millions of hearts
over the internet as they
walked the red carpet leading
to the designer’s home while
setting a major couple goals.
Kiara wore a gorgeous multi-
colour lehenga set while Sid-
harth complemented his wife’s
look and donned a black floral
sherwani. The Granddaughter
of Amitabh Bachchan, Navya
Naveli Nanda, understood the
assignment as she looked rav-
ishing in the festive red saree
with a heavily ornamented
blouse.
As many celebs were spot-
ted at the shindig, there was a
major Barbie Core vibe that
we didn’t miss out on. Sara
Ali Khan looked breathtaking
in her pink lehenga and silver
sequinned blouse with a
plunging neckline blouse and
a stylish bun. Whereas
Manushi Chhillar decided to
don a mesmerising baby pink
sequinned saree as she walked
down the red carpet.
While everyone flooded
the party with lehenga, sher-
wani and pathani kurta, The
Bhaijaan of Bollywood, Sal-
man Khan managed to stand
out yet again. He ditched the
usual traditional attire and
opted for a comforting casual
look.
As this party came to an
end, we shouldn’t forget this is
just the first soiree of B-Town.
As the feel of Diwali sets in
full swing, we are sure there
are many more to come.

  • 4. TOP TWEETS SPIRITUAL SPEAK What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? BIBLE IN-DEPTH PM MODI BOWLS A GOOGLY WHICH OPPN CANNOT PLAY bout 80 crore poor in the country got a wind- fall in the form of free ration for another five years under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kaly- anAnnaYojana. The announcement about the exten- sion of the facility was made by Prime Minister Nar- endra Modi at an election rally in Madhya Pradesh prompting the Opposition to attack the government for having failed to end hunger in its rule of over nine years. Continuation of the free ration scheme is proof that the economy is in distress. The extension of the welfare scheme is to ensure that no poor household “goes to sleep hungry”. But the Opposition brought up the issue of “revdis (freebies)” saying that the term should not be used any more. The Opposition, mainly the Congress in MP, is caught in a bind. It cannot oppose the scheme nor can it let the announcement pass without any criticism. Not only MP, the announcement could sway voters in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh as well. A GAMBLING APP BREWS A POLITICAL STORM ne fat Indian wedding led the Enforcement Directorate to unearth a multi-crore gaming app Mahadev started by a vegetable vendor. The wedding itself took place in Ras Al-Khaimah, a city in United Arab Emirates, in February this year and Sourabh Chandrakar, the juice vendor from Bhilai in Chhattisgarh, was the groom. The lavish wedding, which cost a whopping Rs 200 crore, was graced by several Bollywood actors who are now on ED’s radar. The Mahadev Online Betting app pro- moted by Sourabh and Ravi Uppal (also of Bhilai) allows live gambling in various sports like poker, cricket, badminton, tennis and football besides sev- eral card games. The promoters are now estimated to be worth Rs 5,000 crore and are suspected to be into hawala opera- tions. The app has been banned by the IT ministry but not before it brewed a political storm over the ED’s allegation that Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhu- pesh Baghel was paid Rs 508 crore by the promoters. The allegation assumes huge political significance in the poll-bound state where the BJP is said to be on a weak wicket. Baghel countered the ED’s allegation: “I feel amazed that for months the ED had been probing this app but still it was operational” and hoped that Uppal and Chandrakar will be arrested soon. Chhattisgarh Police was the first to issue a lookout circular against the app promoters.” Joining the issue with Baghel Rajeev Chandrasekhar, MoS in charge of IT, said that the state did not ban the app despite having powers to do so. At this rate you will have used approximately 30 phones in your lifetime. Similarly, other electronic and electri- cal products go out of the market with changing models and due to consum- erist culture, the common man makes changes in the name of advanced use or fashion. While doing all this, one does not even re- alize the fact that How much carbon would have been emitted during the manufacturing of the item? According to a rough esti- mate, about 80 percent of the carbon emission impact of any smartphone occurs during its manufacturing process and the remaining during use, i.e. every time the product is replaced, the more severe the carbon emission impact will be. According to recently re- leased data, last September was the hottest September of the century. If there is anything directly responsi- ble for this, it is pollution. There is a Right to Re- pair campaign going on all over the world with the aim of extending the life and making use till end of life of various consumable products. While the objec- tive of this campaign is en- vironmental protection, it is also aimed at ending the monopoly of the manufac- turing companies in repair- ing these products and thus providing economic relief to end consumer. This movement is basically be- ing run against the monop- oly prevailing in the repair of electric and electronic and automobile products. At present, for repair of products, one has to com- pletely depend on the place authorized by its manufac- turer, otherwise its limited warranty also gets voided. It was also found that many companies have strategy of complete obsolescence of their earlier products so that due to lack of spare parts, the consumer has no option but to throw away. This can also be termed as a market- ing conspiracy. This is why companies like Apple and Microsoftstronglyopposed the movement. As a result of the law and pressure ap- plied inAmerica,Apple has recently agreed to the Right to Repair. Due to the mo- nopoly of big manufactur- ers, the local economy along with micro and small repairmen, skilled engi- neers and assistants all over the world was facing a cri- sis. This monopoly was also having an adverse ef- fect on the end consumer as he had to pay un-arbitrary high price as per the de- mand of the manufacturer. There was no other option except to get repaired at non negotiable cost. It is noteworthy that about 50 million tonnes of e-waste is generated every year in the whole world and India alone produces one- third of that i.e. 16 million tonnes. Due to lack of re- sources, only one third is getting recycled or pro- cessed. This quantity is equivalent to 800 laptops being thrown away every second. If we analyze toxic waste, 70 percent of it is e- waste.Whataseriousthreat to the entire humanity, is being created by us, be- cause of our irresponsible consumption and consum- erist culture. Keeping these facts in view, the founda- tion of the Right to Repair movement was laid so that this increasing number could be curbed. There are many other reasons for the hindrance in curbing pro- duction but promoting re- pair culture till end of life is an effective step to reduce theamountofe-wasteatthe consumer level on a large scale. According to esti- mates, if the consumer gets the facility of easy repair, then the replacement of electronic products can be reduced by more than half. Most of the consumers to- day replace the items be- cause there is no repair fa- cility, if there is any, those are authorised by manufac- turer At limited sites. If he gets the repair done else- where, there is a fear of voiding the warranty and the fear of the quality of the parts being used for repair being genuine or fake. He prefers to change the prod- uct rather than getting trapped in all these com- plexities and webs. The basic purpose of Right to Repair is to force manufacturers to make available parts, tools, diag- nostic equipment, and all information related to their products to consumers and all those who may use them, to make repairs wide- spread and To stop the ma- terial going to the landfill. With the legalization of this right, the lifespan of vari- ous items being used like mobile phones, washing machines, fridges etc. will automatically increase and indirectly household ex- penditure will also be re- duced. As a result of the movementlaunchedbyThe Repair Association, United States ofAmerica and vari- ous states have passed the first Right to Fair Repair law. New York is the first state to adopt this law in the United States. Now more than half of the states of America have given their consent to this. Similarly, United Kingdom,Australia and European Union coun- tries have also passed laws to promote repair and give the right to repair to the consumer in view of the circular economy. France has taken a pioneer step in this direction and has im- posed the obligation on manufacturers to mention the repairability rating on each product so that an ap- propriate decision can be taken at the time of pur- chase. Under the rules passed by the European Union, the manufacturer has been obliged to provide related spare parts to all re- pairers for a period of ten years from the date of pro- duction of the equipment. In a unique initiative, re- pair cafes have been set up in Australia where the gen- eral public can get their products repaired free of costbyskilledvolunteers. In India, a committee has been formedundertheConsumer AffairsDepartmenttolegal- ize the right to repair, so that everypersoncanusehis/her device for its entire life. Al- though there is no law or rule related to the right to repair, but the Competition Commission of India has In the Shamsher Kataria Ver- sus Honda CL Cars India case, passed an order as “givingtheauthorizedspare parts only to designated workshops was considered an anti-competitive practice anddirectionsweregivento make the spare parts easily available”. Due to the effective lob- by of car manufacturers, this decision could not have widespread impact and implementation. As a result, even today most of the consumers are depend- ent on manufacturer au- thorized sites only. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL ABOUT THE PORTAL Recently, the Government of India, in collaboration with about 40 large companies, has started a portal https:// righttorepairindia.gov.in to provide right to repair, in which under the LiFE Mis- sion, products related to agriculture farming, automo- bile, electronic and consumer durables are divided into thrust categories. On this Por- tal, The manufacturers have been registered and provided information about their ser- vice network, warranty and helpline numbers. The companies registered in this portal are mandated to provide all the informa- tion related to the product to the consumers so that they can get the repairs done by themselves or by someone else. Besides, new livelihood possibilities have also been created by connecting the original equipment manufac- turers and other buying and selling related parties on this portal. With all this happen- ing, the most important thing is for the common man to be a responsible consumer. Perhaps he can directly afford to buy the new item, but may be unaware of the longterm losses it is causing. He is generating toxins for himself, his family and the entire living being. Therefore, be deter- mined to use your device as long as possible till end of life and get it repaired properly. This will help in making our Planet liveable. RIGHT TO REPAIR There is a Right to Repair campaign going on all over the world with the aim of extending the life and making use till end of life of various consumable products. While the objective of this campaign is environmental protection, it is also aimed at ending the monopoly of the manufacturing companies in repairing these products and thus providing economic relief to end consumer. This movement is basically being run against the monopoly prevailing in the repair of electric and electronic and automobile products. At present, for repair of products, one has to completely depend on the place authorized by its manufacturer, otherwise its limited warranty also gets voided Dr Vivek S Agrawal The writer is a specialist on Urban Health and Environment C Asolutiontotheenvironment andunnecessaryexpenditure

The jobs which Pt Nehru had cre- ated are being sold one by one by Modi govt. The big factories that we see are modern tem- ples. The BJP govt is snatching away those jobs. They didn’t bring anything new. If these people have brought anything new, then it is ED, Income Tax, CBI.” “Modi first sends these three agencies for campaigning, then he himself makes a speech and accuses Congress leaders of looting the country. You are looting the country. Modi is nervous and scared thinking what will hap- pen to him? They lost in Karnataka and Himachal. They lost in Ladakh corporation polls. He had earlier promised bullet train from Ahmedabad to Mumbai. Where is the bullet train? The work that was to be done in two years is being done now. So who lied? Modi lied,” said Kharge.
