The BJP on Thursday re-
leased the third list of 58
candidates for the Ra-
jasthan Assembly elec-
tions. With this, the party
has declared 182 candi-
dates so far. Even in the
third list, the party has
kept its entire focus on
winning every seat while
maintaining the policy of
neither giving special at-
tention to any particular
group nor ignoring any-
one. No Union Minister
or MP has been given
ticket in this list. Also,
there was no shocking
major decision of the
party which could cause
controversy. Along with
new faces, experienced
leaders of the party have
also been given place.
In the last assembly
polls, BJP fielded Yunus
Khan as the only Muslim
candidate, but this time
around his ticket has
been cut as Ajit Singh
Mehta has been fielded
against Pilot from Tonk

been made the candidate
from Hawamahal seat of

Ex-IPS Shekhawat’s surprise dive into politics!
Rajendra Chhabra
Jaipur
he decision of
retired IPS Kes-
har Singh Shek-
hawat to join BJP has
surprised political and
administrative observers,
almost in the similar
manner how retired IAS
Antar Singh’s entry into
BJP surprised everyone.
It is surprising because
both the officers were the
‘favourites’of the current
Congress government.
Shekhawat, who
joined BJP this past Sat-
urday, retired ten months
back in December 2022.
The current government
gave him proper prefer-
ence and made him SP of
five districts, one after
the other, without any
break. He was first made
Bharatpur SP, followed
by Jalore, Banswara,
Dholpur and Kota.
Shekhawat’s image is
that of a no-nonsense cop
and a hard taskmaster.
Since he was associated
with major happenings
in the state, he forged a
standing in administra-
tion and polity. He
played an important role
on Bhanwari Devi case,
dacoit Jagan Gurjar case
and Anandpal case. He
even came face to face
with infamour dacoit Ke-
shav Gurjar.
In 2013, Shekhawat
took action against
BJP candidate Shambhu
Singh Khetasar, the
Rajput community be-
came miffed with him
and while serving as
Bharatpur SP in 2018,
he was under target of
BJP leaders.

contradic-
tions in sci-
ence—andin
how we view our place in
the universe—is that evolu-
tion occurs on Earth but not
in the cosmos. At first, you
might not spot this contra-
diction. Just as one-celled
organisms in Earth’s pri-
mordial seas eventually
evolved into advanced life
forms, didn’t the universe
alsoevolvefromsuperheat-
ed plasma and interstellar
dust into galaxies, stars,
and planets?
Actually, no. The laws
of nature recognized by
physics don’t include a law
of evolution. Instead, the
governing principle,
known as entropy (the ten-
dency of objects to lose
energy) is a kind of anti-
evolution. Entropy says
that once you break a glass
on the floor, the fragments
cannot spontaneously re-
form into a whole glass
again. Even the most ad-
vanced structure known to
exist, human DNA, would
be seen as an anomaly,
termed “an island of nega-
tive entropy.”
Entropy is measurable,
which gives it scientific
validity. The evolution of
life also provides data, in
the form of genetic muta-
tions. But by itself, there is
no law governing physical
evolution “out there” in
space. Until now. As re-
ported in a Reuters news
article, “…nine scientists
and philosophers on Mon-
day proposed a new law of
nature that includes the
biological evolution de-
scribed by Darwin as a vi-
brant example of a much
broader phenomenon, one
that appears at the level of
atoms, minerals, planetary
atmospheres, planets, stars
and more.” The proposed
new law has a technical
title, “the law of increasing
functional information,”
but in everyday terms, the
law rephrases the creation
story in the Book of Gen-
esis by saying, “Evolution
looked upon its creation,
and it was good.”
Good, in Darwinian
terms, means that a species
has found a way to survive.
Cosmic evolution doesn’t
stray far from this notion,
holding that as structures
become more complex, the
information they contain
can find new combinations
that continue on because
they effectively serve a
function. You can read the
details in the original pa-
per, titled “On the roles of
function and selection in
evolving systems.”
The paper’s authors tout
this as the “missing law” in
physics, which operates by
building blocks made of in-
formation rather than suba-
tomic particles—or along
with subatomic particles.
This breakthrough was per-
sonally thrilling to me, be-
cause 30 years ago, in my
book Quantum Healing, I
proposed that mind and
body had to have the same
source in the quantum field,
an idea I have updated in a
soon-to-be-publishedbook,
Quantum Body.
The crucial link with this
“missing law” is that evo-
lution begins at the very
source of nature. Whatever
happens in the quantum
field must be reflected in
how our cells function and
how we think. Getting
down to brass tacks, evolu-
tion must begin here, too.
There is no way with exist-
ing natural laws to insert,
invent, or suddenly discov-
er evolution at some mid-
point in creation.
Now there’s no need to.
Physics, whose creation
story is dominant in the
modern secular world, is
moving toward a “master
quantum equation” that will
describe how quantum
events change over time.
Such changes, once you
jump to the macro level of
clouds, trees, stars, and the
humanbody,mustbefunda-
mental. If quantum events
werestableandunchanging,
evolutioncouldneverbegin.
Now the question is
whether mainstream phys-
ics, which might be willing
to accept change in the
quantum field (because it
is infinitely dynamic) will
take the next step and call
these changes evolution. If
not, science will remain
stuck on describing life on
Earth as the end stage of
random events governed
by chance strictly accord-
ing to the basic laws of
chemistry and physics.
You can see how atro-
phied such an explanation
is if you look at the brain.
Your brain cells operate
strictly according to those
basic laws of physics and
chemistry as neurons fire
in determined ways. Yet
obviously the brain some-
how processes a constant
stream of new thoughts,
words, sense impres-
sions—the whole dynamic
world in 3-D. This brings
home the contradiction
stated at the outset, where-
by life evolves but not the
physical universe.
Master equations are
more inclusive than indi-
vidual equations, as the
name implies, and a quan-
tum master equation would
be incredibly complex be-
cause it would need to ap-
ply to an infinite number of
quantum events occurring
over time, and even then,
the huge problem of con-
sciousness wouldn’t be ad-
dressed, much less solved.
One can have a vision of a
true master equation for
the cosmos before science
writes one out.
To unify everything in
existence, the following
are required.
l Mind has to be unified
with matter.
l The observer must be
linked to the observed.
l The subjective world “in
here” must conform to the
processes governing the
objective world “out there.”
l The existence of advanced
intelligence, creativity, and
discoveries displayed by
Homo sapiens needs a
valid source.
l A link must be forged
between living and non-
living things.
This sounds like a tall or-
der,buteachofusisalready
living the cosmic master
equation. Our thoughts and
feelings are instantly re-
flected in bodily processes,
effectively linking mind
and matter. We can see a
tree “out there” in a field or
“inhere”asamentalimage,
which merges observer and
observed.We didn’t have to
invent the highest attributes
of human consciousness—
love, compassion insight,
intuition, curiosity, creativ-
ity, intelligence, and spirit-
ual experience—but can
access them spontaneously,
which implies that these
traitsexistasaspectsofcos-
mic evolution. We shed
deadcellsthroughthespon-
taneous replenishment of
living cells, indicating that
Nature ignores the bound-
arybetweenlivingandnon-
living things.
In the end, the “missing
law” is the opening edge of
the wedge. The wedge is a
paradigm shift that puts
wholeness, unity, and non-
separation first and fore-
most, theorizing the har-
monious interaction of
every level of Nature. This
is a case where theory has
been lagging behind reality
for millennia. Without cos-
mic evolution, there would
be no scientists to come
along and discover it.

arathas are not the only ones protesting for
quota. Jats, Gurjars and Muslims all clamour
for reservations at appropriate times. Pro-
tests by Jats and Gurjars have in the past been disrup-
tive. Protests by Marathas seeking reservation have
put the Eknath Shinde government as it requires the
Union government’s nod and then has to survive any
legal challenge. To douse the fire an all-party meeting
adopted a resolution favouring the quota demand but
mentioned that it has to be legally strong. The Shin-
de government assumed that giving a Kunbi (OBC)
certificate to one Maratha youth would appease the
agitators but it was wrong. The youth burnt the cer-
tificate because the entire Maratha community was
not recognized as Kunbi.
Centre has been silent on the issue and the Con-
gress in Maharashtra has demanded Centre’s inter-
vention. Even the Centre would find it tricky. Earlier
quota was quashed by the Supreme Court as it was
crossing the 50 percent ceiling set by the court.

emories of Pegasus spyware, which created
a huge political row in the country, still lin-
ger and the thought that a government could
use such spyware against opposition leaders, judges,
journalists, activists and intellectuals is enough to
cause unease. Nothing came out of the case in which
a Supreme Court-appointed committee found “no
conclusive evidence of the use of spyware” but also
said “the government didn’t cooperate”. Presumably
because national security interests were involved the
government denied having used the malware.

mised by a state-

munications, or even the camera and microphone.”
Apple also said, “While it’s possible this is a false
alarm, please take this warning seriously.”
After receiving the warning several opposition
leaders and journalists claimed they were being tar-
geted. The IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw described
Apple’s warning as vague and promised investiga-
tion. Apple’s warning does not identify the state
which was sponsoring these attacks and since when.
Are some foreign agencies involved in this latest
round of alleged snooping? It got mysterious after
Apple said that “it doesn’t attribute the threat notifi-
cation” to anyone in particular.

“When we (BJP) decided

country, Congress disre-
spected and ran cam-
paigns against her. This
was not against the BJP
but against the daughter
of tribals. So, tribals in
Chhattisgarh should re-
member this and punish
the Congress party.”
PM slams Congress, says it supports nepotism and corruption
Chhattisgarh Polls
For the first time in history, the BJP decided to make
the daughter of a tribal family the President, but
Congress opposed it. Congress also filled its coffers
with black money by committing scams worth
lakhs of crores in Centre. Congress has not been in
Centre for 10 years now, therefore the coffers of
Congress getting empty. Wherever Congress is in
power in the state, it is looting the people there.
They committed corruption in recruitment. But,
those involved in corruption will not be spared.

‘India’s economic crisis continues to spiral out of control’
PTI
New Delhi
The Congress on Thurs-
day attacked Prime Min-
ister Narendra Modi over
the unemployment rate
reportedly climbing to a
more than two-year high,
claiming his enduring
legacy as PM is record
unemployment.
The party also said that
India’s growing “eco-
nomic crisis” continues
to spiral out of control.
Congress president
Mallikarjun Kharge
took a swipe at the Cen-
tre, saying that amidst
recession and inflation,
the Modi government has
organised such an “un-
employment fair” which
is forcing crores of youth
to wander from door-to-
door.
Kharge’s attack on the
government came after a
media report cited the
Centre for Monitoring
Indian Economy Ltd.
data which claimed that
jobless rate has risen to
more than two-year high.
“Narendra Modi ji, the
PR stunt you do by dis-
tributing a few thousand
‘already-sanctioned’ and
‘promotion’ recruitment
letters is like sprinkling
salt on the hopes and
wounds of those youth
who have been waiting
for jobs for years,” the
Congress president said.
“The youth belonging
to the SC, ST, OBC and
EWS categories are bear-
ing the brunt of your (the
PM) atrocities,” he said.
The unemployment
distress is further
proved by the record
demand for
employment under
MGNREGA, which is
the last resort of work
for crores of Indians.
It is up 20% from last
year,” Kharge said.

MORE BENEFIT TO INDIANS
Canada to admit 500,000 immigrants each year
Agencies
New Delhi
anada is set to
boost its annual
immigrant in-
take, with plans to admit
500,000 newcomers by
2025, as announced by
Marc Miller, the Minis-
ter of Immigration, Ref-
ugees, and Citizenship,
during the unveiling of
the immigration plans
for 2024-26.
While maintaining the
current intake of 485,000
new immigrants for
2024, the country aims to
raise this number to
500,000 by 2025, with
this cap sustained from
2026 onwards.
This expansion carries
substantial implications
for Indian immigrants, as
India serves as Canada’s
primary source of immi-
gration and students.
Indians are poised to be
the primary beneficiaries
of this increase, with
281,135 individuals slat-
ed for admission under
the economic category
and an additional 114,000
under the family category.
The annual immigrant
intake of 1.3% of the
population has been
deemed insufficient for
stabilizing the age struc-
ture of the population.
Achieving this goal
would necessitate immi-
gration at approximately
2.1%, as per a report.
Canada’s population
growth has primarily
been driven by immigra-
tion, and this growth has
been a vital factor in
fueling economic devel-
opment in recent years.
The growth has
helped counterbalance
the effects of an aging
population, which in-
cludes retirees and in-
creased healthcare costs.
Strong immigration
inflows contributed
to Canada’s
population growing
at its fastest rate
since 1957,
positioning the
country among the
top 20 fastest-
growing nations
globally, as reported
by Statistics Canada.

18 SEATS STUCK DUE TO TUG-OF-WAR WITHIN BJP
Pankaj Soni
Jaipur
1. HANUMANGARH: BJP
is looking for a new face
here. Dr Ram Pratap, who
was a Minister in previous
govt, lost here by more than
15,000 votes.
2. SARDARSHAHAR: Being a
Cong stronghold, BJP is pre-
paring to bet on an outsider.
3. SUJANGARH: BJP lost
this seat in by-polls after
2018. Ex- min Khemaram is
main contender but party is
looking for a new face.
4. CIVIL LINES : Ex- Min Arun
Chaturvedi is Sangh’s favorite,
but seat is on hold to settle
equations on other seats.
5. KISHANPOL: Due to
equal strength of Muslim
and Hindu voters, BJP
is looking for a face here
who can make a dent in
the Muslim votes also. The
name of ex- Mayor Jyoti
Khandelwal, who joined
BJP, is being discussed,
6. ADARSH NAGAR : Former
BJP State Prez Ashok Parna-
mi has been a two-time MLA.
Party wants a new face.
7. BHARATPUR: BJP wants
to gamble on the leader of
Vaishya community here as
the ticket is on hold due to
factionalism of BJP.
8. BARI: On this seat also,
BJP is busy in solving equa-
tions. The former candidate
is contesting on BSP ticket.
GS Malinga, who became
MLA from Cong, is said to be
in touch with BJP leaders.
9. RAJAKHERA: Considered
to be Cong’s traditional
seat, party wants to an-
nounce tickets together by
creating caste equations in
Bari, Rajkhera.
10. MASUDA : Suspended
former MLA Sushil Kanwar
Palara from BJP is demand-
ing ticket from BJP for his
son Shivraj Singh Palada.
Due to this, the equations
are complicated here.
11. SHERGARH: BJP has put
forward different names for
this seat on behalf of Union
Minister Gajendra Singh
Shekhawat and former Chief
Minister Vasundhara Raje.
Due to this, it is on hold.
12. SHEO: BJP is consider-
ing the name of Ravindra
Singh Bhati for this seat,
but local organizations are
against it. The seat is on
hold due to opposition from
the youth wing of BJP.
13. BARMER: BJP is
considering the strategy of
fielding Union Minister of
State Kailash Choudhary
on this seat, which has
become a stronghold of
Congress. The seat is held
in this confusion.
14. PACHPADRA : BJP’s
Amra Ram Choudhary is
the natural candidate on
this seat. But due to his age
being beyond 75, the matter
is still stuck.
15. MAVLI: Dharmanarayan
Joshi is the BJP MLA from
here. There is talk of BJP
State President CP Joshi
contesting elections on this
seat. At the last moment, the
party can field him from this
Brahmin dominated seat.
16. PIPALDA: BJP is waiting
for the announcement of
Congress candidate from
this seat. If Congress again
gives ticket to Ramnarayan
Meena from here, then BJP
can field a Brahmin here on
the basis of caste.
17. KOTA NORTH: Here
the tickets of both Con-
gress and BJP are with the
party high commands. The
decision regarding Minister
Shanti Dhariwal has to
be taken by the Congress
High Command. The BJP
High Command also has to
take a decision regarding
Prahlad Gujnal.
18. TODABHIM: The last
election from this seat was
won by Prithviraj of Con-
gress by 73,306 votes. Here
BJP is looking for a winning
candidate. Efforts are being
made to establish an equa-
tion with an outside leader.

Sushila Dudi filed nomi-
nation from Nokha As-
sembly on Thursday. Af-
ter this an election meet-
ing was organised at
Ambedkar Circle and
State in-charge CM
Ashok Gehlot,
Sukhjinder Randhawa,
Dr BD Kalla and Govin-
dram Meghwal were pre-
sent. The CM said that
losing and winning elec-
tions are different things.
Dudi left no stone un-
turned in raising farmers’
issues. Unfortunately he
could not succeed in the
elections. Otherwise he
would have become a
minister in this govern-
ment. Sushila Dudi has
come so that she will do
the work, blessings will
be given to Rameshwar
Dudi. He will get well
soon. What is happening
in the country. ED raids
are taking place. Like the
locust swarm of Pakistan,
the ED team is coming to
the state. The lethality of
ED has reduced. Con-
gress Candidate Sushila
Dudi said, I have never
been in politics, only
Rameshwar Dudi has
been in politics. His
health is bad. I have come
among you on demand of
the people of Nokha.
Randhawa said, I
have never seen a leader
like Rameshwar Dudi. If
I love anyone in Raj, it is
Dudi. Though our sister
didn’t want to, we forced
her to fight polls. Dudi
will soon recover and
stand among us.”
First India Bureau
Bali/Bilara/Pali/Jodhpur
Former CM Vasundhara
Raje, while starting the
poll campaign, said that
public isn’t a fool to come
under Cong’s false guar-
antees. She said that it is
surprising that Congress,
which has no warranty of
its own, is giving guaran-
tees to people. “They are
opening a magical box of
relief, which is nothing
but show off.
‘Withnowarrantyofitsown,
Conggivingguaranteestoothers’
Vasundhara Raje being welcome by presenting her an 'Odhni'
during her visit to the nomination rally of Pushpendra Singh
Ranawat in Bali town of Pali district on Thursday.
‘Sushila Dudi will work for masses’
CM Ashok Gehlot addresses
the poll meet in Dudu.
CM HAILS BABULAL
NAGAR IN DUDU
Dudu : CM Gehlot
addressed a public
meeting in Dudu
in support of Congress
candidate Babulal Nagar
and said, Some people
objected to making Dudu
a district. I told them that
I have promised Babulal
Nagar, we will make Dudu
a district. On LoP Rajen-
dra Rathore’s remarks,the
CM said, Their gov hasn’t
come yet and they are say-
ing that they will review new
dists. This is BJP’s thinking,
don't know what they will
do? Babulal Nagar is an
example for politics. Politi-
cians should learn from him
on how to serve the public.

Karwachauth
on Wednesday,
showcasing the
glamour and
tradition that inter-
twines in the
world of newly-
wed couples in
B-Town. This
Hindu festival,
observed by
married women
for the longevity
and well-being
of their husbands,
became a star-
studded affair with
couples like Deep-
ika Padukone and
Ranveer Singh, Pri-
yanka Chopra and
Nick Jonas, Alia
Bhatt and Ranbir Ka-
poor, Virat Kohli and
Anushka Sharma, Katrina
Kaif and Vicky Kaushal
and many more, adorn-
ing the festival with
their presence.
The red carpet
turned into a canvas of
vibrant colors, with the
leading ladies dressed in splen-
did traditional attire. Deepika
Padukone, a newlywed herself,
looked resplendent in her red
saree, symbolizing love and
commitment. She shared heart-
felt moments of her fasting on
social media, setting an exam-
ple for many aspiring brides.
Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jo-
nas, a cross-cultural couple,
too, didn’t miss the opportu-
nity to partake in the festivities.
Priyanka’s mehendi-decorated
hands and her post on Insta-
gram illustrated the amalgama-
tion of cultures in their rela-
tionship, proving that love
transcends boundaries.
The celebration also high-
lighted the significance of to-
getherness in the entertainment
industry. Karwachauth serves
as a reminder of the strong
bonds shared by these couples,
who often find themselves
caught in the whirlwind of busy
schedules and global commit-
ments. Their participation in
such traditions showcases the
importance of maintaining cul-
turaltiesamidstahecticlifestyle.
While these celebrities daz-
zled on the red carpet, their cel-
ebrations were a reflection of the
desires and aspirations of mil-
lionsofnewlywedcouplesacross
India.Thespirit of Karwachauth
is not just about fasting but
about the deep love and respect
that couples hold for each oth-
er. Bollywood stars, by em-
bracing this tradition, inspire
many to nurture their relation-
ships and cherish the sacred
bond of marriage.
The celebration of Karwachauth in Bollywood is more than just a
glitzy affair; it is a testament to the enduring power of love and
the importance of keeping cultural traditions alive, even in the
midst of the glittering world of showbiz. City First sheds lights on a
few iconic couples who serve as role models for countless others,
reaffirming the beauty of marriage and the commitment it
represents in the journey of life!

ow great it
would be if
computation
and creativity
were com-
bined? Well,
that's what artisans are doing.
They are generating a bold
new creative style using “eth-
nocomputing” – an under-
standing of computer science
from a cultural perspective.
The model of democracy in
the 1920s is sometimes called
“the melting pot” – the disso-
lution of different cultures
into an American soup. An
update for the 2020s might be
“open source,” where cultural
mixing, sharing and collabo-
rating can build bridges be-
tween people rather than cre-
ate divides.
Our research on heritage
algorithms aims to build such
a bridge. We develop digital
tools to teach students about
the complex mathematical se-
quences and patterns present
in different cultures’ artistic,
architectural and design
practices.
By combining computa-
tional thinking and cultural
creative practices, our work
provides an entry point for
students who are dispropor-
tionately left out of STEM
careers, whether by race, class
or gender. Even those who
feel at home with equations
and abstraction can benefit
from narrowing the gap be-
tween the arts and sciences.
What are heritage
algorithms?
Traditional STEM curricula
often present science as a lad-
der you climb. For example,
you might be told that math
starts with counting, then
goes to algebra, then calculus
and so on.
But our research has found
that the global history of sci-
ence is more like a bush:
Each culture has its own
branching set of discoveries.
Some of these discoveries of-
fer a perspective that’s differ-
ent from the theorem-proof
approach for math or hypoth-
esis-experiment approach for
biology. Understanding the
rules and techniques that cre-
ate cultural patterns from the
maker’s point of view can
help bridge the gap between
knowledge branches. We re-
fer to these hybrids of com-
putation and culture as herit-
age algorithms, and there are
examples everywhere.
Flying over an African vil-
lage, you can see the recursive
geometry of African fractals
in their architecture: circles of
circles, rectangles within rec-
tangles, and other “self-simi-
lar” structures. These fractal
patterns also appear in their
textiles, carvings, paintings,
ironwork and more.
Other kinds of algorithms
underlie the repeating se-
quences of bent wood arcs
that make up Native Ameri-
can wigwams, canoes and
cradles. Even henna tattoos
demonstrate the interactions
among computation, nature
and culture.
These heritage algorithms
challenge the myth of “primi-
tive cultures” – the idea that
early Africans had no math
past counting on fingers or
that NativeAmerican agricul-
ture lacked sophistication.
The computational thinking
thatisembeddedinIndigenous
artifacts and other creative
practices, such as weaving,
beadwork and quilting, is not
merely decorative. It also re-
flects different ways of think-
ing about the world. Our inter-
views with artisans revealed
how they visualize spiritual
concepts in formal techniques
and numerical sequences.
BRINGING HERITAGE
ALGORITHMS TO THE
CLASSROOM
Heritage algorithms give
students a way to blend the
abstract rigors of math, the
grounded legacies of culture
and the infinite possibilities of
art. To bring these algorithms
to the classroom, we have cre-
ated interactive computer pro-
grams and simulations that we
call culturally situated design
tools, or CSDTs.
Each CSDT was created in
collaboration with Indigenous
elders, street artists, tradition-
al crafters and others. With
the creators’ permission, we
transfer their knowledge of
pattern creation into digital
tools that students enjoy using
and teachers enjoy imple-
menting in their lesson plans.
It’s important to craft each
CSDT to reflect the way those
artisans think about the cul-
tural practice. For instance,
the slope of the line y=x,
mathematically calculated as
“rise over run,” is 1 – for eve-
ry unit you move up the line,
you move a unit to the right.
This line forms a 45-degree
angle with the x-axis. But
when Navajo weavers use this
“up one, over one” pattern,
the slope is closer to a 30-de-
gree angle. This is because
they weave yarn horizontally
through vertical cords that are
thicker than the yarn. So we
made sure to preserve this
feature in the weaving simula-
tion we built.
A crucial aspect of CSDTs
is that students may use them
to follow their interests. This
freedom and independence
lets students encounter new
cultures, delve deeper into
their own identity or mix
designs from different cul-
tures to create something
completely new.
We have seen Black stu-
dents choose an Appalachian
quilting simulation, Native
American students choose
cornrow simulations and
white students create bead-
work simulations. Students’
creative designs often mix
many cultures together –
cornrows become “powwow
braids,” and African fractal
simulations turn into plants,
lungs and river deltas.
Heritage algorithms and
CSDTs provide a powerful
starting place for students to
improve their computing
skills and confidence. These
tools even provide a founda-
tion for a variety of careers,
from architecture to environ-
mental engineering.

With this, the party has declared 182 candi- dates so far. Even in the third list, the party has kept its entire focus on winning every seat while maintaining the policy of neither giving special at- tention to any particular group nor ignoring any- one. No Union Minister or MP has been given ticket in this list. Also, there was no shocking major decision of the party which could cause controversy. Along with new faces, experienced leaders of the party have also been given place. In the last assembly polls, BJP fielded Yunus Khan as the only Muslim candidate, but this time around his ticket has been cut as Ajit Singh Mehta has been fielded against Pilot from Tonk seat. Similarly, ‘Hindut- va newcomer’ Bal- mukund Acharya has been made the candidate from Hawamahal seat of Jaipur. NEW BEGINNINGS Ex-IPS Shekhawat’s surprise dive into politics! Rajendra Chhabra Jaipur he decision of retired IPS Kes- har Singh Shek- hawat to join BJP has surprised political and administrative observers, almost in the similar manner how retired IAS Antar Singh’s entry into BJP surprised everyone. It is surprising because both the officers were the ‘favourites’of the current Congress government. Shekhawat, who joined BJP this past Sat- urday, retired ten months back in December 2022. The current government gave him proper prefer- ence and made him SP of five districts, one after the other, without any break. He was first made Bharatpur SP, followed by Jalore, Banswara, Dholpur and Kota. Shekhawat’s image is that of a no-nonsense cop and a hard taskmaster. Since he was associated with major happenings in the state, he forged a standing in administra- tion and polity. He played an important role on Bhanwari Devi case, dacoit Jagan Gurjar case and Anandpal case. He even came face to face with infamour dacoit Ke- shav Gurjar. In 2013, Shekhawat took action against BJP candidate Shambhu Singh Khetasar, the Rajput community be- came miffed with him and while serving as Bharatpur SP in 2018, he was under target of BJP leaders. First India Bureau Jaipur Enforcement Officer ED Imphal, Manipur in Jaipur- Naval Kishore Meena, and his colleague Junior Assistant (Sub Registrar Mundawar) Babulal Meena were ar- rested by ACB on Thurs- day while taking bribe of Rs 15 lakh. The officer had asked for Rs 17 lakh in return for not arresting the ac- cused and on Thursday, he was trapped while tak- ing Rs 15 lakh. ADG ACB Hemant Pri- yadarshi informed that a complaint was registered with saying that in lieu of settling a case, not attach- ing the property and not arresting him in a chit fund case registered in the office ED, Meena was de- manding bribe amount of Rs 17 lakh. “The ACB team, ar- rested Naval Kishore Meena along with his as- sociate Babulal Meena while taking bribe amount of Rs 15 lakh from com- plainant,” he said. The ED has placed Naval Kishor Meena under sus- pension and a PMLAcase has been initiated against the accused. First India Bureau Kota The National Investiga- tion Agency team raided Kota in the early hours of Thursday and detained two suspects associated with PFI in Kunhadi and Kaithoon police station areas. The house of Mubarak Ali was searchedandhewasinter- rogated in Kaithoon area. First India Bureau Jaipur Acting President of All India Mahila Congress Netta D’Souza on Thursday held a press conference at PCC Headquarters and said that the union govern- ment did not do any- thing to control inflation but also left no stone unturned in increasing the price of LPG. “When the price of LPG increased from Rs 410 to Rs 414 during the rule of the UPA govern- ment, all the women leaders sat on the roads with cylinders to demon- strate against price hike. In Rajasthan, the Con- gress government has proved through its public welfare schemes that it is working for the welfare of people. It is proven that it is working for the empowerment and devel- opment of women. When it comes to rape, Madhya Pradesh stands at number one position,” said Netta D’Souza. Kamal Kant Vyas Jaipur Food and Civil Supplies Minister Pratap Singh Khachariyawas on Thursday attacked the BJP and said that old videos are being edited and posted on social me- dia to divert attention from the issues in the elections. While addressing a press conference, Minis- ter Pratap Singh said, “BJP wants to come to power with the help of lies. If they have the guts, then they should talk about guarantees, which is being given by the Congress. Congress will return to power on the basis of the work of the Gehlot government. BJP headquarter has become a WhatsApp University and old vid- eos are being edited and posted on social media to divert attention of the public on actual major issues. Now, it is for the general public to decide whether to vote for someone or not.” First India Bureau Jaipur Faculties of the Haridev Joshi University of Jour- nalism and Mass Com- munication (HJUJ) on Thursday wore black bands and protested against administration for not giving them promo- tion under the Career Ad- vancement Scheme. They have written a let- ter to VC stating that till the CAS process is com- pleted, they will not do any administrative work except taking classes. • 4. ne of the s t r a n g e s t contradic- tions in sci- ence—andin how we view our place in the universe—is that evolu- tion occurs on Earth but not in the cosmos. At first, you might not spot this contra- diction. Just as one-celled organisms in Earth’s pri- mordial seas eventually evolved into advanced life forms, didn’t the universe alsoevolvefromsuperheat- ed plasma and interstellar dust into galaxies, stars, and planets? Actually, no. The laws of nature recognized by physics don’t include a law of evolution. Instead, the governing principle, known as entropy (the ten- dency of objects to lose energy) is a kind of anti- evolution. Entropy says that once you break a glass on the floor, the fragments cannot spontaneously re- form into a whole glass again. Even the most ad- vanced structure known to exist, human DNA, would be seen as an anomaly, termed “an island of nega- tive entropy.” Entropy is measurable, which gives it scientific validity. The evolution of life also provides data, in the form of genetic muta- tions. But by itself, there is no law governing physical evolution “out there” in space. Until now. As re- ported in a Reuters news article, “…nine scientists and philosophers on Mon- day proposed a new law of nature that includes the biological evolution de- scribed by Darwin as a vi- brant example of a much broader phenomenon, one that appears at the level of atoms, minerals, planetary atmospheres, planets, stars and more.” The proposed new law has a technical title, “the law of increasing functional information,” but in everyday terms, the law rephrases the creation story in the Book of Gen- esis by saying, “Evolution looked upon its creation, and it was good.” Good, in Darwinian terms, means that a species has found a way to survive. Cosmic evolution doesn’t stray far from this notion, holding that as structures become more complex, the information they contain can find new combinations that continue on because they effectively serve a function. You can read the details in the original pa- per, titled “On the roles of function and selection in evolving systems.” The paper’s authors tout this as the “missing law” in physics, which operates by building blocks made of in- formation rather than suba- tomic particles—or along with subatomic particles. This breakthrough was per- sonally thrilling to me, be- cause 30 years ago, in my book Quantum Healing, I proposed that mind and body had to have the same source in the quantum field, an idea I have updated in a soon-to-be-publishedbook, Quantum Body. The crucial link with this “missing law” is that evo- lution begins at the very source of nature. Whatever happens in the quantum field must be reflected in how our cells function and how we think. Getting down to brass tacks, evolu- tion must begin here, too. There is no way with exist- ing natural laws to insert, invent, or suddenly discov- er evolution at some mid- point in creation. Now there’s no need to. Physics, whose creation story is dominant in the modern secular world, is moving toward a “master quantum equation” that will describe how quantum events change over time. Such changes, once you jump to the macro level of clouds, trees, stars, and the humanbody,mustbefunda- mental. If quantum events werestableandunchanging, evolutioncouldneverbegin. Now the question is whether mainstream phys- ics, which might be willing to accept change in the quantum field (because it is infinitely dynamic) will take the next step and call these changes evolution. If not, science will remain stuck on describing life on Earth as the end stage of random events governed by chance strictly accord- ing to the basic laws of chemistry and physics. You can see how atro- phied such an explanation is if you look at the brain. Your brain cells operate strictly according to those basic laws of physics and chemistry as neurons fire in determined ways. Yet obviously the brain some- how processes a constant stream of new thoughts, words, sense impres- sions—the whole dynamic world in 3-D. This brings home the contradiction stated at the outset, where- by life evolves but not the physical universe. Master equations are more inclusive than indi- vidual equations, as the name implies, and a quan- tum master equation would be incredibly complex be- cause it would need to ap- ply to an infinite number of quantum events occurring over time, and even then, the huge problem of con- sciousness wouldn’t be ad- dressed, much less solved. One can have a vision of a true master equation for the cosmos before science writes one out. To unify everything in existence, the following are required. l Mind has to be unified with matter. l The observer must be linked to the observed. l The subjective world “in here” must conform to the processes governing the objective world “out there.” l The existence of advanced intelligence, creativity, and discoveries displayed by Homo sapiens needs a valid source. l A link must be forged between living and non- living things. This sounds like a tall or- der, buteachofusisalready living the cosmic master equation. Our thoughts and feelings are instantly re- flected in bodily processes, effectively linking mind and matter. We can see a tree “out there” in a field or “inhere”asamentalimage, which merges observer and observed. We didn’t have to invent the highest attributes of human consciousness— love, compassion insight, intuition, curiosity, creativ- ity, intelligence, and spirit- ual experience—but can access them spontaneously, which implies that these traitsexistasaspectsofcos- mic evolution. We shed deadcellsthroughthespon- taneous replenishment of living cells, indicating that Nature ignores the bound- arybetweenlivingandnon- living things. In the end, the “missing law” is the opening edge of the wedge. The wedge is a paradigm shift that puts wholeness, unity, and non- separation first and fore- most, theorizing the har- monious interaction of every level of Nature. This is a case where theory has been lagging behind reality for millennia. Without cos- mic evolution, there would be no scientists to come along and discover it. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL TOP TWEETS SPIRITUAL SPEAK It is better to live your own destiny imperfectly then to live an imitation of somebody else’s life with perfection. BHAGAVAD GITA MIND-MATTER FUSION Our thoughts and feelings are instantly reflected in bodily processes, effec- tively linking mind and matter. EVOLUTION GOES COSMIC (IT’S ABOUT TIME) IN-DEPTH QUOTADEMAND MAKING GOVTS’ TASK TOUGHER APPLE REVIVES FEARS OF SNOOPING arathas are not the only ones protesting for quota. Jats, Gurjars and Muslims all clamour for reservations at appropriate times. Pro- tests by Jats and Gurjars have in the past been disrup- tive. Protests by Marathas seeking reservation have put the Eknath Shinde government as it requires the Union government’s nod and then has to survive any legal challenge. To douse the fire an all-party meeting adopted a resolution favouring the quota demand but mentioned that it has to be legally strong. The Shin- de government assumed that giving a Kunbi (OBC) certificate to one Maratha youth would appease the agitators but it was wrong. The youth burnt the cer- tificate because the entire Maratha community was not recognized as Kunbi. Centre has been silent on the issue and the Con- gress in Maharashtra has demanded Centre’s inter- vention. Even the Centre would find it tricky. Earlier quota was quashed by the Supreme Court as it was crossing the 50 percent ceiling set by the court. M emories of Pegasus spyware, which created a huge political row in the country, still lin- ger and the thought that a government could use such spyware against opposition leaders, judges, journalists, activists and intellectuals is enough to cause unease. Nothing came out of the case in which a Supreme Court-appointed committee found “no conclusive evidence of the use of spyware” but also said “the government didn’t cooperate”. Presumably because national security interests were involved the government denied having used the malware. Now an Apple phone alert has set the cat among pigeons. After the alert which warnedApple users of “state-sponsored at- tackers trying to re- motely compromise” their iPhones. The notification fromAp- ple said, “Apple be- lieves you are being targeted by state- sponsored attackers who are trying to re- motely compromise the iPhone associated with your Apple ID. These attackers are likely targeting you individually because of who you are or what you do. If your device is compro- mised by a state- sponsored attacker, they may be able to remotely access your sensitive data, com- munications, or even the camera and microphone.” Apple also said, “While it’s possible this is a false alarm, please take this warning seriously.” After receiving the warning several opposition leaders and journalists claimed they were being tar- geted. The IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw described Apple’s warning as vague and promised investiga- tion. Apple’s warning does not identify the state which was sponsoring these attacks and since when. Are some foreign agencies involved in this latest round of alleged snooping? It got mysterious after Apple said that “it doesn’t attribute the threat notifi- cation” to anyone in particular. The party also said that India’s growing “eco- nomic crisis” continues to spiral out of control. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge took a swipe at the Cen- tre, saying that amidst recession and inflation, the Modi government has organised such an “un- employment fair” which is forcing crores of youth to wander from door-to- door. Kharge’s attack on the government came after a media report cited the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy Ltd. data which claimed that jobless rate has risen to more than two-year high. “Narendra Modi ji, the PR stunt you do by dis- tributing a few thousand ‘already-sanctioned’ and ‘promotion’ recruitment letters is like sprinkling salt on the hopes and wounds of those youth who have been waiting for jobs for years,” the Congress president said. “The youth belonging to the SC, ST, OBC and EWS categories are bear- ing the brunt of your (the PM) atrocities,” he said. The unemployment distress is further proved by the record demand for employment under MGNREGA, which is the last resort of work for crores of Indians. It is up 20% from last year,” Kharge said. • 8. MORE BENEFIT TO INDIANS Canada to admit 500,000 immigrants each year Agencies New Delhi anada is set to boost its annual immigrant in- take, with plans to admit 500,000 newcomers by 2025, as announced by Marc Miller, the Minis- ter of Immigration, Ref- ugees, and Citizenship, during the unveiling of the immigration plans for 2024-26. While maintaining the current intake of 485,000 new immigrants for 2024, the country aims to raise this number to 500,000 by 2025, with this cap sustained from 2026 onwards. This expansion carries substantial implications for Indian immigrants, as India serves as Canada’s primary source of immi- gration and students. Indians are poised to be the primary beneficiaries of this increase, with 281,135 individuals slat- ed for admission under the economic category and an additional 114,000 under the family category. The annual immigrant intake of 1.3% of the population has been deemed insufficient for stabilizing the age struc- ture of the population. Achieving this goal would necessitate immi- gration at approximately 2.1%, as per a report. Canada’s population growth has primarily been driven by immigra- tion, and this growth has been a vital factor in fueling economic devel- opment in recent years. The growth has helped counterbalance the effects of an aging population, which in- cludes retirees and in- creased healthcare costs. Strong immigration inflows contributed to Canada’s population growing at its fastest rate since 1957, positioning the country among the top 20 fastest- growing nations globally, as reported by Statistics Canada. Well, that's what artisans are doing. They are generating a bold new creative style using “eth- nocomputing” – an under- standing of computer science from a cultural perspective. The model of democracy in the 1920s is sometimes called “the melting pot” – the disso- lution of different cultures into an American soup. An update for the 2020s might be “open source,” where cultural mixing, sharing and collabo- rating can build bridges be- tween people rather than cre- ate divides. Our research on heritage algorithms aims to build such a bridge. We develop digital tools to teach students about the complex mathematical se- quences and patterns present in different cultures’ artistic, architectural and design practices. By combining computa- tional thinking and cultural creative practices, our work provides an entry point for students who are dispropor- tionately left out of STEM careers, whether by race, class or gender. Even those who feel at home with equations and abstraction can benefit from narrowing the gap be- tween the arts and sciences. What are heritage algorithms? Traditional STEM curricula often present science as a lad- der you climb. For example, you might be told that math starts with counting, then goes to algebra, then calculus and so on. But our research has found that the global history of sci- ence is more like a bush: Each culture has its own branching set of discoveries. Some of these discoveries of- fer a perspective that’s differ- ent from the theorem-proof approach for math or hypoth- esis-experiment approach for biology. Understanding the rules and techniques that cre- ate cultural patterns from the maker’s point of view can help bridge the gap between knowledge branches. We re- fer to these hybrids of com- putation and culture as herit- age algorithms, and there are examples everywhere. Flying over an African vil- lage, you can see the recursive geometry of African fractals in their architecture: circles of circles, rectangles within rec- tangles, and other “self-simi- lar” structures. These fractal patterns also appear in their textiles, carvings, paintings, ironwork and more. Other kinds of algorithms underlie the repeating se- quences of bent wood arcs that make up Native Ameri- can wigwams, canoes and cradles. Even henna tattoos demonstrate the interactions among computation, nature and culture. These heritage algorithms challenge the myth of “primi- tive cultures” – the idea that early Africans had no math past counting on fingers or that NativeAmerican agricul- ture lacked sophistication. The computational thinking thatisembeddedinIndigenous artifacts and other creative practices, such as weaving, beadwork and quilting, is not merely decorative. It also re- flects different ways of think- ing about the world. Our inter- views with artisans revealed how they visualize spiritual concepts in formal techniques and numerical sequences. BRINGING HERITAGE ALGORITHMS TO THE CLASSROOM Heritage algorithms give students a way to blend the abstract rigors of math, the grounded legacies of culture and the infinite possibilities of art. To bring these algorithms to the classroom, we have cre- ated interactive computer pro- grams and simulations that we call culturally situated design tools, or CSDTs. Each CSDT was created in collaboration with Indigenous elders, street artists, tradition- al crafters and others. With the creators’ permission, we transfer their knowledge of pattern creation into digital tools that students enjoy using and teachers enjoy imple- menting in their lesson plans. It’s important to craft each CSDT to reflect the way those artisans think about the cul- tural practice. For instance, the slope of the line y=x, mathematically calculated as “rise over run,” is 1 – for eve- ry unit you move up the line, you move a unit to the right. This line forms a 45-degree angle with the x-axis. But when Navajo weavers use this “up one, over one” pattern, the slope is closer to a 30-de- gree angle. This is because they weave yarn horizontally through vertical cords that are thicker than the yarn. So we made sure to preserve this feature in the weaving simula- tion we built. A crucial aspect of CSDTs is that students may use them to follow their interests. This freedom and independence lets students encounter new cultures, delve deeper into their own identity or mix designs from different cul- tures to create something completely new. We have seen Black stu- dents choose an Appalachian quilting simulation, Native American students choose cornrow simulations and white students create bead- work simulations. Students’ creative designs often mix many cultures together – cornrows become “powwow braids,” and African fractal simulations turn into plants, lungs and river deltas. Heritage algorithms and CSDTs provide a powerful starting place for students to improve their computing skills and confidence. These tools even provide a founda- tion for a variety of careers, from architecture to environ- mental engineering.
