2. • The video eerily dals with a realistically done narrative piece about
a murderer having to kill some people in a car park. The scenes are
shot so that the gore is out of frame but the context and obviously
implications are disturbing.
• It’s unclear to see exactly what representation this has for the band
but obviously there doesn’t appear to be a focus on the band
particularly, as evident from the lack of performance clips.
3. • It’s difficult to really see how the song edits to the beat given how it
is entirely narrative based and many of the shots are long duration
while the chorus of the song is quite fast paced. Narratively the long
duration shots make the scenes more realistic (in not cutting too
much) while also building tension as the viewer is unaware of what
may happen next.
• The straight cuts at 1:04 and 1:12 best show how the song maintains
its tone and beat despite the use of long duration shots. The long
durations help with the verses which are quite calm, but it is able to
swiftly cut to handheld in order to indicate the tension of the scene.
4. • Notably the scenes become more intense during the chorus, which
is typically when the murders are shown on screen. I believe this is
particularly well done in the use of the can as a weapon – the strikes
seem to be in time with the music.
5. • I noticed in particular, this video uses some black lines above and
below the clips – due to the ratio of the videos. This makes the
video way more cinematic which might be worth looking into.
6. • I don’t think that a narrative video is what I’m aiming for given how
I want to focus on Jack’s performance. In fact I would say I want to
adhere more to psychedelic convention in providing something
more visually entertaining and not as realistic.
• It is also interesting to see technically how well the video did while
subverting conventions of both genre and music. Given the intensity
of the chorus, it might have been more expected to use multiple
jump cuts but the performance and context of the video help with
this.
