2. The Codes and Conventions
• This music video is a hybrid of narrative and performance. The
narrative consisting of a man’s breakdown after seeing the
skeleton of a girl he was meeting, and the performance
consisting of the band performing on a stage to the camera.
• The editing of the video is mostly in sync to the pace of the
snare drum that the drummer of the band plays and since the
track is primarily quick in tempo, the editing is fast paced to fit
with the music.
• This music video also does good at showing off all the band
members individually but also as a band.
3. The Cinematography
• One of the primary camera work you notice in the video is the
extensive use of camera shaking which would usually become
disorientating after a while, but this video seems to have sustained a
good balance
• There is a range of shot types used in this video, primarily the use of
steadicam, close ups, medium long shots, tracking shot, panning
shots and long shots. But also the occasional extreme long shot.
• Another noticeable camera work is the use of angled shots, most of
the shots used for the band members are angled to the left or the
right to give another perspective rather than just capturing them
straight
4. The Editing
• The overall editing in this video is quite fast paced and sharp except
for during the chorus and the outro, for those parts the editing
becomes much more relaxed and slow tempo.
• The editing in this video is used to add narrative to the story. For
example the main point of the narrative with the man being able to
see the skeleton of anyone who makes contact with him, gives the
narrative more depth as it shows him seeing things differently to
everyone else making him feel alienated
• Another editing trick that was used for this video is the warping of
the skeleton image, which stresses the difference the man in the
narrative feels he is between everyone else.
5. The Iconography/Star Construction
• As I stated before, this video does good at showing off all the band
members individually but also as a band. Although the main attention
is mostly focused Austin, the ‘dirty’ vocalist in the band and Aaron,
the clean vocalist and bassist in the band. However the drummer gets
a lot of screen time compared to drummers from other bands
• The iconography in this video is typical to bands of this genre
including the all black clothing and the logo and name of the band on
the bass drum. The energetic performance of the band including the
synchronized head banging is also a part of the band’s iconography
