2. • The video seems to be rather abstract containing artistic imagery that
seems unrelated to the lyrics of the song, such as the clown or the
swinging saw blades.
• The video can be seen as unrealistic or fictional given the abstract
nature of the imagery and the lack of continuity however it is more of
a performance piece as it focuses on the band playing music in some
parts.
3. • The costume design is rather simple and doesn’t take away from the
main performance of the singer. Notably he is wearing rounded
sunglasses which were popularised by artists such as John Lennon
and Elton John, evoking the idea to the audience that Gallagher is of
equal musical prowess. With this in mind he has very much made
them his own as they feature in a few other videos.
4. • Given the artistic presentation of the artist, I personally feel that they
come across as pretentious (on the surface) to those who aren’t fans
of their work.
• The band certainly play their instruments and lip-sync well however
the personality of the members doesn’t come through, instead we
see them perform well which might be the video’s intention.
• As the video focuses on Gallagher’s singing, he seems to control the
video as he has the audience’s attention most – looking into the
camera and breaking the fourth wall.
• The static camera shots, slow transitions and camera movement
(zooming or tracking) amplify the slow and steady music.
5. • The video has a distinct focus on instruments, including them
immensely to show how the video is centred around the band’s
performance.
• In the guitar is one of the few coloured things in the video, drawing
focus to it as it is very distinguished from the rest of the black and
white mise-en-scene.
6. • Additionally the shot below is quite minimalistic which helps to direct
the viewer’s focus toward the man in the centre playing the guitar,
this becomes more of the focus following a zoom to show how the
musical performance shapes the video.
• The video even includes some shots of a record spinning with the
band name on to reinforce the brand identity and associate them
with the theme of music. The iconography of a record player even
furthers this in linking the band to music and listening to it.
