PROBLEM SOLVING &
EXPERIMENTS
Emma Garthwaite
LOCATIONS
Because one of the models that Iā€™m looking into
using would be a friend I have called Liam who
lives in Middleborough I have been looking up
places that will be near where he lives just for
convenience. Therefor I found this place with a
wall with writing on it which I love the aesthetic of
this therefore I would either like to take inspiration
from this place or do a shoot here depending at
how hard this location is to get to. If this location
is hard to get to what I may do is get the projector
in the studio and get a quote projected onto the
white screen to then have someone model with
that projected onto the screen. I think I would get
a quote more related to streetwear and the
subject that I wanted to look into.
LOCATIONS
I also want to do some work in front of some
graffiti because I think thatā€™s something that
looks aesthetic to the idea of what I want to
create. I will have to find places with graffiti or
street art which I can look into in places like
Leeds or certain places in northern Ireland when I
next go over there. However again its finding the
right place and some graffiti that is appropriate.
Therefore it will take a little more research. In
addition things like going to northern Ireland or
even just Leeds depends on funds and finding
models that are willing to either travel with me
or find people living there to model for me. As
well as knowing where is safe to have my kit
especially in NI because I donā€™t know the streets
as well as I may in Leeds.
MODELS
Models are a hard thing to organize due to having a 100% reliable and will
not cancel and reschedule which ive learnt from experience. Therefore it is
something I will sort out early enough into production to be able to
reschedule and look into having people that will have the time to do the
shoots with me, not people who will waste time and keep putting it off like
people have done in the past. I will make sure within this project my
models are reliable because missing a shoot could definitely ruin a lot of
other things for the rest of my production. I will mainly be shooting people
alone or in pairs so that makes it easier to organize because its less people
to get into one place. I think if I choose models properly and get people
who I know I can rely on then it shouldn't be an issue. Also planning
enough ahead will help a lot as well so that I can give people enough
notice to get the time off work or make sure they have no other plans. This
is something that I will look into as soon as production starts so that I can
get it handled.
TECHNIQUES
I need to practice a lot of techniques to get this project together. There are
a few challenges Iā€™ve created within my project. I need to create a logo for
my brand therefore I need to do some practice with the graphics tablet to
get used to using it. In addition, I will make sure I practice with the
cameras so that I can make sure my photography is going to be how I
want it to be. There are a lot of techniques I need to learn but this is the
point of doing production experiments is to get used to using these
techniques and practice them more until you can do them properly.
However if things donā€™t work out I will have to keep practicing until I can
get it right and perfect the techniques that I need. It will all be trial and
error within these techniques.
FINANCE
Looking into the finance side of
everything. Printing is something
Iā€™ve had to research a lot into
because its something Iā€™ve never
personally done before. I have
looked into three major options that
I can afford to get about 5 copies of
my magazine. With around 30-40
pages depending on how many I
make. It all depends on money but
the Ā£25 is the most value for money
to look at. Iā€™m looking at free
samples to get and idea of printing.https://mixam.co.uk/samples
https://www.digitalprinting.co.
uk/
FINANCE
Another thing I am going to have to factor into
this is looking into within this project is buying
clothes for my brand. I need to buy clothes to
print my designs on so that I have clothes that I
have designed. I had a look into buying four
hoodies and four t-shirts that will cost me around
Ā£43.89 to get the clothes that I want. To create
something that was physical and that was
something I could incorporate into my photo
shoots and looking into printing something like
that. However Iā€™ve already ordered these clothes
therefore this shouldn't be an issue.
BACKING UP/SOFTWARE
Another issue that could possibly happen is the risk of losing work or
software failing. To avoid this I will make sure everything is backed up and
saved on a memory stick and onto one drive so that not everything is just
saved on the computer so that I have copies and also means that I can
access my work on any computer not just the one Iā€™m mostly on in class.
Everything should be accessible no mater where I am therefore I will make
that possible. As for things like software failing I will make sure Iā€™m saving
every twenty minutes to keep it up to date as much as I can so that if
something does fail I have it saved up to the biggest change Iā€™ve made
with my work. I am hoping this will help work these issues out.
EQUIPMENT
Another possible issue is with the equipment. There are multiple problems
that could happen to do with the equipment. It could be running out of
battery, running out of storage or loosing photos. There are ways to stop
running out of battery or storage can be having both spare batteries or SD
cards so that you have back ups of everything and then also having a way
to saving myself from any issues during shoots. It is something that is
simply avoided while on a shoot. Another thing is knowing where to take
the equipment and where it is safe to have but thatā€™s something that
should work out due to me only going where I should be going.
WEATHER
Another issue could be weather because most of my shoots are outside. I
need it to preferably be fair weather and with the British weather it can be
very hit or miss. Therefore what I will do is make sure I plan my shoots for
days when the weather looks good and know that ill be able to do a shoot
that day. If the weather really isnā€™t wanting to cooperate then I will move
my shoots into the studio and edit the photos in production so that they
fit the aesthetic that I want.
PRODUCTION EXPERIMENTS
Emma Garthwaite
LOGO EXPERIMENTS
I experimented with a brand logo for my
clothing brand. I took an image off google
of a gun and played around with that a
little bit which I think worked great and
then also had a go at creating a logo
which was completely done by scratch. I
created this by elongating the P and
making it look like a gun. I like this but I do
think it looks like something that could
look very armature so I think I could do
something a little more detailed.
TESTING LENSES ā€“ WITHOUT TRIPOD
I was testing out a new lenses which is harder to focus and
gives a slightly unfocused look to any photos. It makes it
very hard to focus on things. It gives a unique look to the
photos. I love the idea of giving my images a unique look
compared to just taking it with a normal lens. Taking it
without the tripod was a lot harder to get it to focus
properly. I love the idea of having a more unique look to
them. It was harder without a tripod because it made it
harder to move the lens because I was also trying to
position the camera. I think when you get the photo right
it will look great and will look amazing.
TESTING LENSES ā€“ WITH TRIPOD
I tried with the same lens with a tripod which I think
actually worked a lot better because it helped me
manipulate the lens while not having to concentrate on
holding the camera so it made the photography a lot
easier. It was easier to focus on doing one thing rather
than doing multiple things at once. I wanted to create
something that looked right which was made easier
with the tripod so therefore if I use this lens I will be
using it with the tripod.
EDITING PHOTOS
I messed with the colour mixer on
photoshop and created this magenta
look onto this photo which looks like
the lighting was pinkish. I like this look
but it does slightly look photo
shopped. The shadowing works well
and it definitely looks good but I can
really tell that its been photoshopped.
I want to create something that will
look unique and something that will
work out well for the aesthetic of the
magazine.
EDITING PHOTOS
This was something that I created using
gradients on a new layer and changing the
mask of the layer. I went through them all and
looked through the different effects to put
onto the gradient and I worked out that these
two are the best ones. The first one was good
but the only thing is that the black doesnā€™t
really show up on this level and I didnā€™t like
that one as much because of this reason.
However the other one has too much black in
the upper right corner but I think its all about
looking into finding a happy medium with the
black.
EDITING PHOTOS
I think I like this one a lot more
because it looks way more natural
and the lighting looks like it was
actually pink. I really think that this
one works way better. It might not
even be pink that I use but working
on editing photos will work a lot
better with practice. I am very happy
with how practicing editing went
within production experiments.
EDITING PHOTOS
I thought this would be a cool technique to
experiment with as well because of the
colour scheme Iā€™m looking into. I want
something quite simple but also something
that is colourful in places so I thought this
was a perfect way to look into it. I would
either just make the clothing colourful or
the whole person like Iā€™ve done. But this
simple technique adds a lot to a simple
photo.
PROJECTOR EXPERIMENT
This was an experiment I did to see if It would work if
I used to projector for some of my shoots however I
didnā€™t think it would work realistically after id done
the shoot, this was because it just looked too blocky
and even with the straight up colour it didnā€™t match
the aesthetic I was trying to get within my magazine
therefore I changed my mind and went for editing
photos rather than trying to make them look edited
when taking them. So I chose to stay away from this
technique.
PROBLEMS I HAD TO SOLVE
THROUGHOUT
MODELS
So I had planned to do more shoots than I expected however there were a
few complications that came across with these shoots. I fell out of touch
with my main model which put a hold on some shoots. Therefore I had to
find some more replacements. I still had two of my main models, Charlie
and Aaron. I struggled to get a hold of a few of my models because of
them living further away. Therefore I did a lot of my shoots at college
because it was the only place I could see people. I over came these issues
by finding other models and finding times when I could shoot with
everyone either together or separately. It wasnā€™t the easiest thing to work
out however the outcome worked out over all.
FINANCE
So my idea was that I was going to have a new job which was going to pay
me more money than what I was getting originally. However I left that job
because it was taking up too much of my time and wasnā€™t giving me the
time to do this project which was my priority therefore I was left with no
finance again. How I over came this was my parents helped me out with a
lot of the clothes I bought and anything else I needed to purchase so
although this wasnā€™t the best fix it helped me out for the short term while I
was getting another job and could afford things on my own. It stopped
me from travelling which was hard but because of losing touch with a lot
of my originally planned models that wasnā€™t that much of an issue.
CLOTHING ISSUES
So my idea was that I was going to create a clothing brand along with the
magazine. However I bought some transfer paper for the clothes I had
bought and it didnā€™t work. I was at a loss because of having very low
finance and couldnā€™t buy anymore. Therefore because of this I was forced
to scrap the idea and not have my own branding of clothing which I was
really disappointed about because I was really excited about the ideas I
had. However the magazine turned out well in the end and I think I did
enough to save the fact that my largest idea was ruined.

Problem solving

  • 2. LOCATIONS Because one of the models that Iā€™m looking into using would be a friend I have called Liam who lives in Middleborough I have been looking up places that will be near where he lives just for convenience. Therefor I found this place with a wall with writing on it which I love the aesthetic of this therefore I would either like to take inspiration from this place or do a shoot here depending at how hard this location is to get to. If this location is hard to get to what I may do is get the projector in the studio and get a quote projected onto the white screen to then have someone model with that projected onto the screen. I think I would get a quote more related to streetwear and the subject that I wanted to look into.
  • 3. LOCATIONS I also want to do some work in front of some graffiti because I think thatā€™s something that looks aesthetic to the idea of what I want to create. I will have to find places with graffiti or street art which I can look into in places like Leeds or certain places in northern Ireland when I next go over there. However again its finding the right place and some graffiti that is appropriate. Therefore it will take a little more research. In addition things like going to northern Ireland or even just Leeds depends on funds and finding models that are willing to either travel with me or find people living there to model for me. As well as knowing where is safe to have my kit especially in NI because I donā€™t know the streets as well as I may in Leeds.
  • 4. MODELS Models are a hard thing to organize due to having a 100% reliable and will not cancel and reschedule which ive learnt from experience. Therefore it is something I will sort out early enough into production to be able to reschedule and look into having people that will have the time to do the shoots with me, not people who will waste time and keep putting it off like people have done in the past. I will make sure within this project my models are reliable because missing a shoot could definitely ruin a lot of other things for the rest of my production. I will mainly be shooting people alone or in pairs so that makes it easier to organize because its less people to get into one place. I think if I choose models properly and get people who I know I can rely on then it shouldn't be an issue. Also planning enough ahead will help a lot as well so that I can give people enough notice to get the time off work or make sure they have no other plans. This is something that I will look into as soon as production starts so that I can get it handled.
  • 5. TECHNIQUES I need to practice a lot of techniques to get this project together. There are a few challenges Iā€™ve created within my project. I need to create a logo for my brand therefore I need to do some practice with the graphics tablet to get used to using it. In addition, I will make sure I practice with the cameras so that I can make sure my photography is going to be how I want it to be. There are a lot of techniques I need to learn but this is the point of doing production experiments is to get used to using these techniques and practice them more until you can do them properly. However if things donā€™t work out I will have to keep practicing until I can get it right and perfect the techniques that I need. It will all be trial and error within these techniques.
  • 6. FINANCE Looking into the finance side of everything. Printing is something Iā€™ve had to research a lot into because its something Iā€™ve never personally done before. I have looked into three major options that I can afford to get about 5 copies of my magazine. With around 30-40 pages depending on how many I make. It all depends on money but the Ā£25 is the most value for money to look at. Iā€™m looking at free samples to get and idea of printing.https://mixam.co.uk/samples https://www.digitalprinting.co. uk/
  • 7. FINANCE Another thing I am going to have to factor into this is looking into within this project is buying clothes for my brand. I need to buy clothes to print my designs on so that I have clothes that I have designed. I had a look into buying four hoodies and four t-shirts that will cost me around Ā£43.89 to get the clothes that I want. To create something that was physical and that was something I could incorporate into my photo shoots and looking into printing something like that. However Iā€™ve already ordered these clothes therefore this shouldn't be an issue.
  • 8. BACKING UP/SOFTWARE Another issue that could possibly happen is the risk of losing work or software failing. To avoid this I will make sure everything is backed up and saved on a memory stick and onto one drive so that not everything is just saved on the computer so that I have copies and also means that I can access my work on any computer not just the one Iā€™m mostly on in class. Everything should be accessible no mater where I am therefore I will make that possible. As for things like software failing I will make sure Iā€™m saving every twenty minutes to keep it up to date as much as I can so that if something does fail I have it saved up to the biggest change Iā€™ve made with my work. I am hoping this will help work these issues out.
  • 9. EQUIPMENT Another possible issue is with the equipment. There are multiple problems that could happen to do with the equipment. It could be running out of battery, running out of storage or loosing photos. There are ways to stop running out of battery or storage can be having both spare batteries or SD cards so that you have back ups of everything and then also having a way to saving myself from any issues during shoots. It is something that is simply avoided while on a shoot. Another thing is knowing where to take the equipment and where it is safe to have but thatā€™s something that should work out due to me only going where I should be going.
  • 10. WEATHER Another issue could be weather because most of my shoots are outside. I need it to preferably be fair weather and with the British weather it can be very hit or miss. Therefore what I will do is make sure I plan my shoots for days when the weather looks good and know that ill be able to do a shoot that day. If the weather really isnā€™t wanting to cooperate then I will move my shoots into the studio and edit the photos in production so that they fit the aesthetic that I want.
  • 12. LOGO EXPERIMENTS I experimented with a brand logo for my clothing brand. I took an image off google of a gun and played around with that a little bit which I think worked great and then also had a go at creating a logo which was completely done by scratch. I created this by elongating the P and making it look like a gun. I like this but I do think it looks like something that could look very armature so I think I could do something a little more detailed.
  • 13. TESTING LENSES ā€“ WITHOUT TRIPOD I was testing out a new lenses which is harder to focus and gives a slightly unfocused look to any photos. It makes it very hard to focus on things. It gives a unique look to the photos. I love the idea of giving my images a unique look compared to just taking it with a normal lens. Taking it without the tripod was a lot harder to get it to focus properly. I love the idea of having a more unique look to them. It was harder without a tripod because it made it harder to move the lens because I was also trying to position the camera. I think when you get the photo right it will look great and will look amazing.
  • 14. TESTING LENSES ā€“ WITH TRIPOD I tried with the same lens with a tripod which I think actually worked a lot better because it helped me manipulate the lens while not having to concentrate on holding the camera so it made the photography a lot easier. It was easier to focus on doing one thing rather than doing multiple things at once. I wanted to create something that looked right which was made easier with the tripod so therefore if I use this lens I will be using it with the tripod.
  • 15. EDITING PHOTOS I messed with the colour mixer on photoshop and created this magenta look onto this photo which looks like the lighting was pinkish. I like this look but it does slightly look photo shopped. The shadowing works well and it definitely looks good but I can really tell that its been photoshopped. I want to create something that will look unique and something that will work out well for the aesthetic of the magazine.
  • 16. EDITING PHOTOS This was something that I created using gradients on a new layer and changing the mask of the layer. I went through them all and looked through the different effects to put onto the gradient and I worked out that these two are the best ones. The first one was good but the only thing is that the black doesnā€™t really show up on this level and I didnā€™t like that one as much because of this reason. However the other one has too much black in the upper right corner but I think its all about looking into finding a happy medium with the black.
  • 17. EDITING PHOTOS I think I like this one a lot more because it looks way more natural and the lighting looks like it was actually pink. I really think that this one works way better. It might not even be pink that I use but working on editing photos will work a lot better with practice. I am very happy with how practicing editing went within production experiments.
  • 18. EDITING PHOTOS I thought this would be a cool technique to experiment with as well because of the colour scheme Iā€™m looking into. I want something quite simple but also something that is colourful in places so I thought this was a perfect way to look into it. I would either just make the clothing colourful or the whole person like Iā€™ve done. But this simple technique adds a lot to a simple photo.
  • 19. PROJECTOR EXPERIMENT This was an experiment I did to see if It would work if I used to projector for some of my shoots however I didnā€™t think it would work realistically after id done the shoot, this was because it just looked too blocky and even with the straight up colour it didnā€™t match the aesthetic I was trying to get within my magazine therefore I changed my mind and went for editing photos rather than trying to make them look edited when taking them. So I chose to stay away from this technique.
  • 20. PROBLEMS I HAD TO SOLVE THROUGHOUT
  • 21. MODELS So I had planned to do more shoots than I expected however there were a few complications that came across with these shoots. I fell out of touch with my main model which put a hold on some shoots. Therefore I had to find some more replacements. I still had two of my main models, Charlie and Aaron. I struggled to get a hold of a few of my models because of them living further away. Therefore I did a lot of my shoots at college because it was the only place I could see people. I over came these issues by finding other models and finding times when I could shoot with everyone either together or separately. It wasnā€™t the easiest thing to work out however the outcome worked out over all.
  • 22. FINANCE So my idea was that I was going to have a new job which was going to pay me more money than what I was getting originally. However I left that job because it was taking up too much of my time and wasnā€™t giving me the time to do this project which was my priority therefore I was left with no finance again. How I over came this was my parents helped me out with a lot of the clothes I bought and anything else I needed to purchase so although this wasnā€™t the best fix it helped me out for the short term while I was getting another job and could afford things on my own. It stopped me from travelling which was hard but because of losing touch with a lot of my originally planned models that wasnā€™t that much of an issue.
  • 23. CLOTHING ISSUES So my idea was that I was going to create a clothing brand along with the magazine. However I bought some transfer paper for the clothes I had bought and it didnā€™t work. I was at a loss because of having very low finance and couldnā€™t buy anymore. Therefore because of this I was forced to scrap the idea and not have my own branding of clothing which I was really disappointed about because I was really excited about the ideas I had. However the magazine turned out well in the end and I think I did enough to save the fact that my largest idea was ruined.
