5S is a process for implementing and maintaining a clean, safe, and organized
work area
5S is a system uses a list of five Japanese words: Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu &
Shitsuke

• Define what is and isn’t needed in the area to do the job.
Remove items not needed: tools, books, instructions –
prioritize essential items
SEIRI = Sort
• Organize the work area based on ‘A place for everything
and everything in its place.’ Designate locations for files,
tools, equipment, supplies, etc. and label properly
SEITON = Set in
Order
• Clean, sweep, scrub, etc. Cleaning is inspection.SEISO = Shine
• Identify “Best Practices” and document them so they
can be followed by everyone. Use same tools, processes,
and documentation where applicable.
SEIKETSU =
Standardize
• Maintain and review with everyone involved. Continual
reinforcement of the importance of 5S; Audits, Culture
change – make it a habit.
SHITSUKE = Sustain

1) Remove unnecessary items and dispose them properly
2) Make work easier by eliminating obstacles
3) Reduce chance of being disturbed with unnecessary items
4) Prevent accumulation of unnecessary items
5) Evaluate necessary items with regard to usage / cost factors

2) Make it easy to find and pick up necessary items
3) Ensure first-come-first-serve basis (FIFO)

1) To clean the workplace thoroughly so that there is no dirt
2) Use cleaning as inspection (Cleaning with Meaning)
3) Can also be translated as "sweep" or " Spic & Span"
4) Prevent machinery and equipment deterioration
5) Keep workplace safe and easy to work

5S - Shitsuke (躾) : Sustain Self Discipline

1) keep in working order - ongoing / continuous Improvement
2) Also translates to "Self-Discipline" meaning to do without being told
3) 5S is a habit and it is to be continually improved
4) Keep the 5S going through training, communication & organization structures
5) Allocate time for maintaining, Management Support, Rewards"

Obsolete :- Parts ( Jigs / tooling ) not required as the design has become obsolete
Defective :- Parts can’t be used as it is (need some correction)
Scrap :- Scrap Items not thrown out
Not in place :- Kept at wrong place
Unnecessary :- Extra / not useful
Mix-up :- Mixed parts .. Needs attention
Un-identified :- Nobody’s baby
Items not used for last 6 months
Obsolete documents, not used but still stored for a long time

Basic Guidelines for Storage :
Check What (Item Identification)?, Where ( Location)? & How Much (Quantity)? When
(Time limit)? Before actually practicing ‘2S’
Decide appropriate location for every thing and display identification mark for every
location
Items stored should have the Identification Mark including purpose of storage & its
review date
Every thing should be cleaned thoroughly before they are stored at its pre fixed location
Location and storage of the items should be easily access to all
Clear identification and visibility for the location
Training and information to all
FIFO should be ensured

• Ideally nothing stored more than a step away.
• Improve efficiency by eliminating time lost looking for
items.
One Step Rule:
• Organize workplace to allow any tool, information or
material to be located and retrieved within 30 seconds.
• This includes computer files!
30 Second Rule:
• Immediate work area layout to minimize twisting.45 Degree Rule:
• Store things above the knees and below the chest.Strike Zone Rule:
• Locate heavy items to eliminate bending, stooping or
unnecessary arm movements during lifting.
