5S is a system for organizing spaces so work can be performed efficiently,
effectively, and safely. This system focuses on putting everything where it
belongs and keeping the workplace clean, which makes it easier for people to
do their jobs without wasting time or risking injury.

▰ Make things easy to locate, easy to put away, readily apparent if missing
▰ No wasted time looking for tools or documents, they are identified and on
hand when needed
▰ Nothing that is used daily is stored more than a step away.
▰ Improve economy of motion, save valuable seconds, and make the job
less frustrating
▰ Arrange the immediate work area layout to minimize twisting, especially
applicable for bench work.

S3- Shinepolicies
▰ Don’t wait until things get dirty. Clean your workplace including machines
and equipment, tools and furniture regularly so that they do not have a
chance to get dirty
▰ A clean workplace promotes pride and demonstrates an interest in
quality
▰ Cleaning allows us to find problems with equipment and tools in time to
prevent delays
▰ A bright, clean, organized work area that promotes confidence, quality
and on time delivery

▰ Document the standard method for workplace organization so we always
do things in the same way
▰ Standardizing the way we maintain a work area and perform our work
promotes consistency in how work is approached and accomplished, and
allows easier cross training and movement of personnel

▰ Without sustaining the first 4S will die
▰ It promotes a continuous improvement environment
▰ Ever improving quality, cycle times, on time commitments; high
motivation and recognition for excellence

✓ Some companies like to include a sixth S in their 5S program: Safety. When safety is
included, the system is often called 6S. The Safety step involves focusing on what can be
done to eliminate risks in work processes by arranging things in certain ways.
✓ Some people consider safety an outcome of performing the other five S's appropriately, and
as a result say a sixth S isn't necessary. They think if the workspace is properly organized
and cleaned and uses helpful visual safety cues, a separate safety step is unnecessary.
✓ Neither approach to safety is right or wrong. But however, a business wants to approach
safety, it should be aware that paying attention to safety is important.

It is commonly said that the employees of a company are its most valuable
resource. This is true on many different levels. Of course, employees are
necessary for getting the day to day work done in any business, and without
them, the company would quickly have to be shut down. What is perhaps
more important, however, is the ability the employees have to influence
change in a positive way.

▰ Set goals and recognize success
Your employees want a challenge, it’s human nature. If they
show up everyday with the same menial tasks to work on with
no goal in sight, it’s easy to become unmotivated. Setting
achievable goals for your employees allows them to work
towards something concrete and will also give you as a
manager something to measure their performance against.

▰ Listen
One of the biggest motivating factors for employees is the
feeling that their wants and needs are heard at work. This
doesn’t mean that every request is granted but listening to what
employees have to say is key to motivation.

▰ Recognize Success
Recognizing the success of the employees is going to go a long
way toward helping develop an environment where everyone
wants to work hard and innovate. If someone makes a
suggestion on how to change a particular task, and it ends up
making that job easier or more efficient, this success should be
celebrated. This type of celebration can be done publicly, and
ideally should last as long as possible.

Keeping your employees motivated to work hard and give their
best efforts is key to a successful and healthy business. There
are some employees that might need a little nudge to work
harder and some that do it on their own but in the end,
managers play a pivotal role in motivation..

  • 23. S6- safety 23 ✓ Some companies like to include a sixth S in their 5S program: Safety. When safety is included, the system is often called 6S. The Safety step involves focusing on what can be done to eliminate risks in work processes by arranging things in certain ways. ✓ Some people consider safety an outcome of performing the other five S's appropriately, and as a result say a sixth S isn't necessary. They think if the workspace is properly organized and cleaned and uses helpful visual safety cues, a separate safety step is unnecessary. ✓ Neither approach to safety is right or wrong. But however, a business wants to approach safety, it should be aware that paying attention to safety is important.

Of course, employees are necessary for getting the day to day work done in any business, and without them, the company would quickly have to be shut down. What is perhaps more important, however, is the ability the employees have to influence change in a positive way. 25

If they show up everyday with the same menial tasks to work on with no goal in sight, it’s easy to become unmotivated. Setting achievable goals for your employees allows them to work towards something concrete and will also give you as a manager something to measure their performance against.

If someone makes a suggestion on how to change a particular task, and it ends up making that job easier or more efficient, this success should be celebrated. This type of celebration can be done publicly, and ideally should last as long as possible.
