Cavity liners are thin protective barriers applied to dentin that protect the pulp from irritants in restorative materials and reduce sensitivity. They are supplied as solutions, powders mixed with liquid, or pastes in tubes. Cavity liners are composed of calcium hydroxide suspended in an organic liquid and provide a protective film but no mechanical strength or thermal insulation. They are easily applied by flowing or painting over dentin and the solvent evaporates, leaving a thin protective residue on the dentin.

CAVITY LINERS
DEFINITION:-
 A Cavity liner is used like a cavity varnish to provide a barrieragainst the passage of
irritants from other restorative materials and reduce sensitivity or freshly cut dentin.
 A material that coats the bottom of a prepared cavity to protect the pulp; it is
applied in a thin layer and usually contains calcium hydroxide or mineral trioxide
aggregate (MTA).
SUPPLIED AS:-

Powder and liquid
Paste in tubes
COMPOSITION:-
Suspension of calcium hydroxide in an organic liquid such as-
METHYL-ETHYL-KETONE
OR
ETHYL ALCOHOL
PROPERTIES:-
 Cavity liners neither possess mechanical strength nor provide any significant thermal
insulation.
 The calcium hydroxide liners or soluble and should not be applied at the margins of
restorations.
 Fluoride compounds are added to some cavity liners in an attempt to reduce the
possibility of secondary caries around permanent restorations or to reduce sensitivity.

MANIPULATION:-
 Cavity liners are fluid consistency
 Can be easily flowed or painted over dentinal surfaces.
 The solvent evaporate to leave thin film residue that protects the pulp.
 The paste form is applied in the cavity and the light cured.
