2. Root canal sealers are used in conjunction
with biologically acceptable semisolid or
solid obturating materials to establish an
adequate seal of the root canal system.
INTRODUCTION
4. FUNCTIONS OF ROOT
CANALSEALERS
Serves as a filler for canal irregularities and minor
discrepancies between the root canal wall and core
filling material.
To obturate the lateral canals
Acts as lubricant
Enhances the possible attainment of impervious seal
Can assist in microbial control.
For radiopacity
5. IDEAL
REQUIREMENTS:
Should provide an excellent seal when set.
Should produce adequate adhesion between
itself , the canal walls, and the filing material.
Should be radiopaque.
Should be nonstaining.
Should be dimensionally stable.
6. Should be easily mixed and introduced into the
canals.
Should be easily removed if necessary.
Should be insoluble in tissue fluids.
Should be bactericidal or discourage bacterial
growth.
Should be non irritating to the peri radicular
tissues.
Should be slow setting to ensure sufficient working.
8. ZINC OXIDE-
EUGENOL CEMENTS:
zincoxide-eugenol cements modified for
endodontic use
Mixing vehicle is mostly eugenol or in
combination with other liquids likecanada
balsam.
Setting time adjusted for adequateworking
time.
Radiopacity 4-5mm of aluminium.
11. PROPERTIES:
Plasticity and slow setting time-sodiumborate
anhydrate.
Good sealing potential and smallvolumetric
change
Apical extrusion gets absorbed.
DISADVANT
AGES:
Resin is of coarse particlesize
SETTINGTIME:
Hardens approximately 2hrs 37degree Cin canal.
12. MANIPULATION:
Sterile glass slab with spatula,2 or 3dropsof
liquid-small increments of cement powder,2
smooth creamyconsistency.
T
otest proper consistency- drops test and
string out test
Commercially available as Roth’
s 801 root
canal sealer
14. INDICATION:
All the lateral condensation methods, when chance of overfilling
is present.
CONTAINDICATIONS:
When heavy lubrication isneeded.
PROPERTIES:
Medium working time.
Medium lubricatingquality
Minimal periapical
Sticky (canada balsam)
Should be mixed to smooth creamyconsistency
Should string out atleast 1inch when spatularaised
Icrasing thickness of sealer lessens lubricating effect, soindicated
when there is possibility of overextension
Available aspowder and liquid in separate bottles.
17. ADV
ANT
AGES:
Easy to mix
Extremely lubricated
Does notstain
Expands after setting.
DISADV
ANT
AGES:
Irritant to periapicaltissues
Very low viscosity –extrusion through apicalforamen.
Working time less than 30mins andeven shorter in presence
of moisture.
INDICATIONS:
when apical surgery to be performed immediately
after filling
Because of great lubricating property –good choice
when it becomes difficult for a master cone to reach
last mm ofpreparation.
18. ADV
ANT
AGES:
Ease of manipulation
Adhesion to dentinal walls, onlyslight
dimensional change.
Radiopaque ,germicidal property,minimal
staining, ample workingtime
DISADV
ANT
AGES:
All are cytotoxic and inflammatory response is
seen.
Not easily absorbed from apicaltissues.
ADVANTAGEAND DISADVANTAGE
OFZOE SEALERS:
19. Non –eugenolcalcium hydroxidepolymeric resin
root canalsealer.
100% humidity takes 3weeks to reach final set,
never sets in dryatmosphere.
Sealer expands whilesetting
22. Less tissue irritation ,lowtoxicity
Because of adhesivequalities
recommended as sealers.
Itis not used nowadays because of
difficulty to remove from rootcanal.
23. ADVANTAGES:
Best physical qualities, best bonding to dentin,
fewest voids, best flow , strengthen the roots.
DISADVANTAGES:
Cannot be removed from the root canal.
24. RESIN BASED ROOT CANAL
SEALERS
DIAKET:
Polyvinyl resin and reinforcedchelate formed between zincoxide
and diketone
Finewhite powder and viscous honey coloured liquid, 2drops of
liquid mixed with 1scoop ofpowder
Hardens rapidly about 6-8 mins on glass slab even more rapidly on
root canal
Known for its resistance to absorption ,superior to other sealers in
tensile strength and resistance topermeability.
Mildinflammatory reaction occurs when over filled.
25. AH26
Epoxy resin sealers characterised by reactive epoxidering
polymerised by the breaking of thisring.
PROPERTIES:
Good adhesiveproperty.
Good flow
Antibacterial contracts slightly whilehardening
Lowtoxicity
Addition of hardener makes curedresin chemically andbiologically
inert
Consists of yellow powderand viscous resin liquid mixed to hick
creamyconsistency
Slow setting 36-48 hrs at body temperatureand 5-7 days at room
temperature.
Long setting time and materialfluidity
Nocrackingor separation from the dentinal walls
It releases formaldehyde duringsetting.
26. AHPLUS
Epoxy resin based sealer,2 componentpaste.
Easy to mix and adapt closely o the root canal.
Minimal shrinkage upon setting ,long termdimentional
stability
Mix equal volume of pasteA and pasteB.
Setting time 8hours at 37 degreeC.
Spatulas, mixing slab and instrumentsimmediately
cleaned with alcohol oracetone.
27. ADV
ANT
AGES:
Excellent biocompatibility
Easy handling andapplication
Outstanding physicalproperties
Excellent radiopacity
Suitable for all oburationtechniques.
ADVERSEREACTIONS:
Reversible acute inflammation of the oral mucosawhen
it is exposed tothe unset paste.
