Petaling streetis a major path of chinatown, it’s sit within
petaling street commercial district. Centering to a major part
of the tourist industry, it possese a rich local community in
which its generations be dated back two hundred centuries.
My library is located on Site B
4. 2.0 Daylighting Performance Evaluation
According to MS 1525,
Daylight Factor, DF
Zone Daylight Factors (%) Distribution
Very Bright >6 Very large with thermal and glare
problems
Bright 3-6 Good
Average 1-3 Fair
Dark 0-1 Poor
Table 1, Daylight factors and distribution. (Department of Standard Malaysia, 2007)
2.1 Space A ( Silent Reading Zone )
Formula Daylight Factor (DF) = (Ei/ Eo) x 100%
Area of Space (m2) 7.5m x 6.5m
= 52.5 m2
Area of Skylight (m2) 0
Area of Penetration (m2) 3.0m (H) x 6.5m (L)
= 19.5 m2
Daylighting Factor, DF (%) [ (Exposed Area + Area of skylight)/ Floor
Area] x 100%
= [ (19.5 + 0)/ 52.5] x 100%
= 37.14% x 0.1
= 3.7%
5. Conclusion
The Silent Reading Zone area located on the 3rd floor has a daylight actor of 3.7%.
According to MS1525. This space is categorized under bright zone with a good natural
daylighting as the daylighting factors, DF, falls within the range of 3-6%. This space is
east facing thus receiving large amount of natural light penetration during the day.

6. Formula DF = (E internal, Ei/Eo) x 100%
Given, Eo (Unobstructed sky of
Malaysia)
20,000 lux
Daylight Factor, DF (%) 3.7%
Natural Illumination Calculation (lux) DF = (E internal, Ei/Eo) x 100%
37.14% = (Ei / 20000) x 100%
Ei = (3.7x 20000) / 100%
Ei = 740 lux
Conclusion
The suggested illumination level The Silent Reading Zone in a library space is 300.
However, the illumination level calculated in this space is 740 lux, which is still higher than
the recommended value. Thus, it is expected that problems such as thermal discomfort
or glare issues will happen. Installation of shading device or double glazed low e-value
glass are required to solve this issue.
7. 2.2 Space B ( Out-Door Lounge )
Formula Daylight Factor (DF) = (Ei/ Eo) x 100%
Area of Space (m2) 5.3m x 15m
= 79.5 m2
Area of Skylight (m2) 0
Area of Penetration (m2) 3.0m (H) x 15m (L)
= 45 m2
Daylighting Factor, DF (%) [ (Exposed Area + Area of skylight)/ Floor
Area] x 100%
= [ (45 + 0)/ 79.5] x 100%
= 56.60% x 0.1
= 5.6%
Conclusion
The Out-Door Lounge area located on the 4th floor has a daylight actor of 5.6%.
According to MS1525. This space is categorized under bright zone with a good natural
daylighting as the daylighting factors, DF, falls within the range of 3-6%. This space is
east facing thus receiving large amount of natural light penetration during the day.

Conclusion
The suggested illumination level for Out-Door Lounge area in a library space is 150.
