Project proposal title and date:
Thompson Photography & Media
Main area of activity:
In this project, I will be working in graphic design and photography.
Rationale:
Throughout my years at college, I have created many magazine products – each incorporating
their own new techniques that I had learnt both from YouTube tutorials and from tutors. I have
experience using editing software such as Photoshop and InDesign which are commonly used in
the industry, I am creating my products for. I would use these editing skills to manipulate the
photos I take for my website and portfolios depending on the subject shot. The Photoshop skills
specifically will be useful for creating my business cards and creating less structured pages of my
magazine(s) such as the covers. The InDesign experience would ensure I could structure my
magazine’s articles and images featured once through the Photoshop phase. I also have created a
website previously in this course using a website called Wix and learnt new skills through tutorials.
All my work created during this term has also all been collected and added to a website created on
Wix and was designed to make my projects more accessible. This will all help me in my final
project as I will know where the essential features to use for my website are and how to use them
effectively.
Project Concept:
For my final project I will be creating a fake photography business and making different types of
advertisement for it in the form of a website, online advertisements, magazines, business cards
and photography portfolios. The website will feature contact details and a large collection of
portfolios each with their own theme to them (modelling, Nature, etc) to show off my work. The
online advertisements will focus mainly on my website, directly linking to it and showing mini
slideshows of photos taken previously. It will use mini slogans or persuasive lines to catch the eye
of the reader and entice them. My magazines will be one of the main products in this project. It will
be branded separately from my website and online advertisements but will instead feature more
advertisements or promotions inside. The magazine itself will obviously be photography based and
will feature a mix of real and fake photographers (friends willing to help) and give the audience tips
on how to handle their cameras and use them effectively. The business cards will be the smallest
and easiest part of my project, showing clearly and aesthetically my design work and details for
hiring. I may buy a real batch of these in the future as I hope to potentially use these products
later. My photography portfolios will be one of the biggest products of my project. I will spend a lot
of time travelling around and exploring my town to find wildlife, nature and urban areas to shoot
models in. Each portfolio will have a specific theme and will be featured directly on my website as
well as being uploaded to an Instagram account unofficially to show off to anyone who may come
across it online. To create my website and magazine(s) to a professional standard, I will need to
look up tutorials on YouTube showing how to use more complex tools efficiently. I will also search
more famed individuals online and study their work, taking notes of techniques they use and what
they are well known for. All information will be recorded in Harvard referencing. To assist me in
writing out the text for my magazine, I will look for camera theory books in the college library as I
feel that it is the more reliable source of information for me to learn this topic from. This could also
help me create my portfolio.

How will the project be evaluated and reviewed:
My work will be evaluated both during production and during post-production. During the pre-
production phase I am keeping my progress in a weekly PowerPoint update. I talk about what skills
I feel I have found, what skills I think I may need, and how up to date I am with my tasks. I will
continue making weekly blogs until I begin the production phase during which I will begin recording
my daily progress in the same fashion. During this phase I will be recording the progress made
throughout the day, showing off any skills I have learnt that day and explaining skills I have
incorporated into my work that day too. I will also examine whether I am falling behind or getting
ahead of schedule. This evaluation will help me to assess my production and plan and change my
schedule if needed. I can also review the quality of specific pieces of work and mark areas for
improvement for future projects. Towards the end of this project, I will be creating an evaluation
PowerPoint looking at my work and analysing the outcome whether good or bad. I will look at the
technical qualities and compare them with another professional product, ruling out the similarities
and differences and what I think works and does not. I will do this for each product. I shall also be
looking at the aesthetic qualities of the products in a similar fashion. Time management will be
reviewed, recording what I would have done with more time, if I did need more time and if anything
took longer than expected. I will use this information to help me improve any future projects I begin
in my new course.
