- The document outlines a student's work on a year-long project to produce a film opening title sequence. It was broken into 7 tasks involving research, pre-production planning, production, and post-production work.
- For the opening title sequence, the student chose to do a horror genre called "Into the Woods." They storyboarded ideas, analyzed other title sequences, pitched their concept, secured a location, shot footage, and edited it all together with title credits and sound.
- Through completing the various tasks, the student gained experience with pre-production, production, and post-production skills like research, planning, filming, and editing to create their final opening title sequence project.

Scenario
This is the scenario we were given at the start of the year, we would then go on to complete
7 different tasks, based around our scenario and eventually put them all together and
upload them to a blog.
'You have been hired on a freelance basis by Working Title Pictures to produce the opening
title sequence and credits for a new film due for release in the 2nd quarter of 2016.
This project will require research into existing filmopening title sequences. This research
will inform the planning, production and post-production of your project. Prior to planning
your production, you will be required to pitch your idea for your opening title sequence to
the client for approval.'
I chose to create a horror film as I enjoy watching them and I also believe this is the best
way to show my imagination and editing skills. After creating my story board I realised my
ideas were maybe a little be unrealistic and may not be achieved to their full potential,
however the basic idea was kept throughout. Me and my partner came up with name 'Into
The Woods'. We feel this was a good name, as our whole title sequence was set in a
deselect woodland terrain.
Task 1
For task 1 we had to 'Produce a comprehensive word-processed analysis of three film
opening title sequences'. Our examples had to be from different genre of films, with images
and videos to support our views. We had to take screenshots of the title sequences we
wanted to analyse, showing different title credits and images on screen. This was to show a
number of different things included in the title sequences, such as genre conventions, title
credit designs and cinematography. The 3 films I analysed were James Bond: Skyfall, Toy
Story and Spiderman. I picked these 3 films as they were all different genres, and all showed
each of the sections I had to analyse very clearly. These films helped me gather ideas for my
own title sequence for my production, so analysing these films was very helpful.
Here is an example of the analyses we did. This is part of my work for my 3rd analyses,
which was for Spiderman. I had to analyse Cinematography & camera techniques and Visual
effects & Colour scheme. These were just a couple of the sections I had to analyse.
2. These are some of the images I screenshot from the title sequence of Spiderman. I had to
find a different screenshot for each of my sections, for each film, which in total was about
18 pictures.
3. Task 2
For task 2 I had to 'Show creativity and flair whilst generating ideas for a film opening title
sequence production'. We had to present hand drawn sketches and digitally produced mind
maps, mood boards and gather any other relevant images used.
Here as an image of the mind map I created for my film title sequence ideas. I researched
many different genres and sub genres,
however I mainly focused on horror. I came
up with ideas under the sub headers
Iconography, Genre conventions, Types of
Character, Cinematography, Mise en scene
and Genre of film. These all helped me think
and create my filmidea, for my title
sequence. These ideas were created in pairs
(me and Niamh) but we created separate
mood boards and mind maps. I created this
with the software 'MindGenius Education'
This screenshot is taken from a slide show which I created to show different conventions of
different filmgenres. I created numerous slides for different filmgenres such as Horror,
Romance and Comedy. I got images of typical things you would see in these type of film, and
also typed out what you would expect to see in these genres.
4. Task 3
For task 3 I had to ' Produce a comprehensive word-processed analysis that demonstrates
an ability to extract and discuss secondary research (produced by another) on the subject of
film opening title sequences'. I had to find a secondary research source and discuss in my
own words what information I have discovered. I had to create an initial draft and then an
improved version of the draft. Here is a picture of the secondary research I made, which
was taken from a 'Total Film' magazine. The article was on Guardians of the Galaxy. I then
created a draft about the article in very little detail, and then created a second version with
a lot more information. The red text in the screenshot below is the extra detail added.
Task 4
For task 4 I had to prepare a pitch for my opening title sequence idea. My pitch
included
Finalise ideas for your film opening title sequence
Prepare a project proposal in response to the brief
Prepare a presentation including visual aids and presenter’s notes
Give the presentation in the form of a pitch to the client
First of all I prepared for my presentation, as this is what I was most worried about,
as I wasn't very confident talking in front of other people. I created cue cards to help
me remember what to include in my presentation. These were small pieces of paper
with a few words on them to keep me on track when presenting. As well as that, I
had a power point playing in the
background with different images which
were relevant to my idea. I also had to
create a detailed script describing my
opening title sequence. I made sure my
5. script wasn't too long or boring, and that it would keep the audience intrigued to my
idea. I shared the script with my partner, and it lasted roughly 5 minutes. Luckily, me
and partner had similar ideas on what we wanted to do for our title sequence, so we
went from there. We both knew that we wanted to do the horror genre, and both
agreed our 'Into The Woods' idea was a good one. We split the script in parts for us
both to say and described our idea.
Task 5
For task 5 I had to Produce content specific pre-production planning for your chosen film
opening title sequence idea. We created storyboards and looked at location recces and risk
assessments.
Before we went out filming we looked at locations we could use which would be suitable
and work for our film. As we were filming under trees in a woods, we had to check the
lighting was good enough and the camera would focus. Luckily, everything was ok, so after
checking the location a couple of times we decided this was the right location to shoot. We
also had to check everything was safe so we created some risk assessments and made sure
the location passed the safety test. An example of this is the weather, we had to check there
was sufficient cover in case it rained, so we could carry on filming. An example of location
recces is that the woodland wasn't very thick, so we could see houses in the background.
However we decided that it was suitable.
6. Task 6
For task 6 I had to use pre-production documentation produced, you must work as a team
to shoot your film opening title sequence. It is expected that you will need to shoot and/or
re-shoot additional footage during this process. We had to take pictures of ourselves on set,
working with the camera and tripod equipment. Luckily we had a friend who was willing to
take pictures of me and my partner using the equipment. We kept a diary of the pictures we
took throughout our production, so we could look back on what we had done. Luckily our
location was only down the road so we could go during our breaks at college and film parts
at a time.
Task 7
For task 7 we had to produce a final edit of your filmopening title sequence. This final edit
must have included industry job relevant title credits. After collecting all of our footage we
used after effects software to edit the colour and contrast and create the title credits. We
then rendered the footage and title credits and imported them to Adobe Premier. Using this
software I was able to put my title credits and footage together on one screen, and see what
7. it looked like. I also put all the separate clips together to create the sequence, in what would
be our final edit. Using this software, I was able to sync the title credits to match the on
screen image, timing it so they would appear at the correct time, and fade in and out. This
took a couple of 1 hour lessons to make sure everything was how I wanted it to be. Once the
on screen image was all sorted, I had to find some background music which would match my
production. I needed something eerie and spooky, as though the person in my title
sequence was being watched. Thankfully I found copyright free sounds on 'FreeSound'
which I was able to use for my production. I used an eerie background sound for the
majority of the sequence, but also used a heart beat towards the end for added effect and a
sudden lightning strike to try and make the audience jump.
Overall, I think my production went smoothly. I didn't have any major trouble with the
technology on the computers or equipment like the camera and tripod; once I got used to it,
I was fine. If I could change one thing about my production, I would have tried to film in
more detail for my clips, using costumes and more iconic conventions you would expect to
see in a horror film. However overall, I think I did well considering it was the first time I've
ever done something like this, and all the technology was new to me.
