Task 7
IG1 Film Opening Title Sequence Evaluation-
In this task we were required research into existing film opening title sequences. This research
helpedinthe planning, productionand post-productionof myproject. We also had to pitch our idea
to our teacher. Inthis projectIdidresearchintodifferentgenre of film, different film opening title
sequences which I analysed, expressed my own ideas using mind maps and moods boards,
researchedintodifferentmediacontentandthenplanned and produced my own film opening title
sequence. My film opening title sequence was a psychological horror which was called âBrokenâ
which lasts for about 1.28 seconds.
The firsttask we had to dowas to produce a word-processedanalysisof three filmopeningtitle
sequences,Ianalysedthe filmSkyfall,ZombielandandSweeneyTodd. We hadto analyse the
imagesinthe film,colour,Genre,TargetAudience,cameratechniquesandthe title credits. Ihadto
alsogive an image togo withmy analysis,Ialsoputa linktothe Filmopeningtitle sequence above
my analysisoff YouTube,Ichose these filmstoanalyse because theyare personalfilmfavouritesand
theywere kindof filmthatI wantedtobase my openingtitle sequencearound, theywere bothin
the genre of horror, supernatural andpsychological horror, thisdidhelpwithmyownproductionof
my title sequence becauseIgotto learnand understandall the differentaspectsinvolvedinmaking
a filmopeningtitle sequence.IthoughtIanalysedthemwell andIinclude everythingwhatIwas
supposedtoonthe taskbrief,byresearchingandanalysingthese threefilmopeningtitlessequence
it reallyhelpedbe understandthe conceptof genre conventions.

Pre-Production
In this task we had to Show our creativity and style ideas for a film opening title sequence
production. These ideas can be presented in the form of sketches, hand drawn and digitally
produced mind maps, mood boards. The first thing I did was present my ideas all on a mind map,
thishad ideaswhichIliked, differentcamera techniques , the genre of my ideas, locations, type of
characters and iconography and types of title credits. I explored my ideas in this task and talked
about all the different types of things which relate to the genre of horror, I also explored my own
initial ideaswhich Iusedtoproduce in my filmopeningtitle sequence. Ithoughtthishelpedme alot
and helped my build my ideas on the different aspects I needed to think about when producing a
title sequence, the genre of horror is what I was working on and thinking about, this was because I
find the genre of horror fascinating and intriguing, I also thought it was the best genre to use
because youcan be extremely creative with your ideas and there so many different things you can
explore with the genre of horror.

The nextpart to thistask waswhere I presentedmyideasinamodboard,a moodboard, in thistask
we couldexplore ourchosengenre even further. A moodboardis a type of posterthat often
consistsof manyimages the moodboard, and in the moodboard I explored5keypartsgenre,
character, props,cameraanglesandlocation.I thenfoundmanyimagesrelatedtothese keytitles
and thengave a small bitof informationtogowithimages,Ifoundthisreallyfunandhelpbecause I
got to lookandtake indifferentkeyaspectsthatneedtobe in a horror film. Overall task2was
extremely helpedme alotbecause made thinkaboutmyideasand gave me clearindicationsof
whatmain aspectsare in mychosengenre.

The nexttask I didwasI neededtopitchmy ideaformy openingtitle sequence, myideaformyfilm
openingtitle sequence wasgoingtobe a psychological horrorcalledâBROKENâ the filmopening
title neededlastnomore than1:30 seconds,Ichose the genre of a psychological horrorbecause
there issuch a wide varietyof thingsyou canexplore suchasmental illness, distress, how someoneâs
sanitycan be brokenand itis a goodgenre to use editingskills.Iwasable to explore manycamera
shotsand visual effectswhenitbecomestothistype of genre. Ihad the ideatocreate an opening
title sequencewhichwasfocusingonone maincharacterand the narrative wasgoingto be about
mental illnessandhowsomeone canbe pushedtoomuchto commithorrible crimes.
The start of my pre-production Ihadtocreate a storyboardto show myideasof what I wantedinmy
filmopeningtitlesequence,I hadto draw a quicksketchof my ideaof the shot and scene, thenIhad
to write whatwas inthisshot, whatkindof shotit wasand any keyeditsIwas goingto make onthe
shot.i alsohad to putwhere I wasgoingto put the title creditonthe shot,I thoughtin thistaskI
made it veryclear on what wasgoingon inthe sketchand the descriptionclearlywasshown.Onmy
ownopeningtitle sequencelooking atthe storyboards andlookingatmy filmopeningtitle
sequence,Ididwell atmakingsure the storyboardmatchedmyowntitle sequence, butif Iwasever
to do thistaskagain I wouldmake sure Ifollow itmore accuratelyandmake sure I addthe things I
have put onmy storyboard.I foundthe storyboardswhere extremelyeffectinhelpingandguiding
me throughwhat scenes, shotsandtitle credits Ihadto add to my title sequence. One thingIfound
difficultwhenitcame to the actual filming,Iplannedtohave differentpropslayingona table, butI
couldof findone of the propsto use and we were supposedtofilmthe librarypf mycollege butwe
werenâtable to,soI didhita couple of problemswhenitcame tomakingitthe same to my
storyboard,we alsoaddedsome outside shotswhichwe didnâtplanonthe storyboardsoin future I
will make sure Ihave addedall of the necessaryscenes.

For my openingtitle sequence Ihadthree mainlocationsforfilming, afterlocationscoutingIfounda
little forestforthe outside shooting, itwasclose andeasytoget to,my college forthe scenesIneed
to use corridors,I usedhouse toshoot, these locationswere easytogetit, andfor my openingtitleit
was perfectforit. I usedgoogle mapstohelpme finddifferentlocations.
The nextpart to my pre-productionformy ownfilmopeningtitlesequence Ihad create a Film
openingtitle sequence shootriskassessment, WhenIwasconductingthe riskassessmentIhadto
considerall the likelyhazards;whomaybe harmed,propertywhichmaybe damaged,andthe
controlsalreadyinplace.Then,foreachlikelyhazard,bearinginmindthe controlsalreadyinplace,
record the âriskassessmentâlevel.
I had to thinkaboutwhere Igoingto shoot, whowas goingto be withme while Ishootthe scene,
the hazards that will effectbe shootingandif there wasanyhazardsI has to talkabout I wasto
preventthe hazardsharminganyone.
Where I wasfilmingthere wasnâttoomanyhazards, butthere were twomainhazardsthat effected
my shooting, some of mysceneswere locatedincorridorsof mycollege andthe onlyhazardI could
pointoutof slipperyfloors, the slipperyfloorscouldof harmedsome of the people whowere
helpingme withthe filming,Ididwell atpreventingthisImade sure the floorareawas notwetor
slipperyandif itwasI wouldof askedfor a Warningsignto show people where towalk, thiscould
alsoeffectedthe equipmentIwasusingsoI made sure thiswasnot nearany wetsurfaces. The
secondhazardI pointedoutwasone of our sceneswasclose toa road withcars frequentlydriving
past,I didwell at presentinganyproblemsbyhavingapersonlookoutfor anycars andto keptthe
equipmentawayfromthe road,if I wasto thisagain I wouldof pointedoutanotherhazard,thiswas
because we addeda newshotafterplanningwhere the groundwasunsafe inaforestclose tomy
college soIwouldof addedanotherhazard,it wouldhave beenworkingneardeepwater, Ididwell
of makingsure none of the people whowasinvolvedinfilmingwashurtand I keptall equipment
safe.

Nowwe came to the actual filmingof our openingtitle sequence, inthistaskwe hadto use a camera
and go outand capture our footage, thiswasa challengingbecause we neededtomake sure we
capturedall the shotswe needed,we neededtomake sure we gotall the rightcamera shotsand still
thinkabouthealthandsafety. I leantmycamera skillsquicklyandwasable totake clearshot, only
thingI couldof heldthe cameraina betterpositionsothe screendidnâtshake.
Thiswas a shot of my camera I wasusingto filmingmyfootage,Iwas
checkingovermyfootage to make sure itwas the correct footage
captured. I thoughtthe camera wassimple andeasyto use;it was
goodto use to filmmyshots.
Thisa screen shotof some of myscenes of my
footage before itwentintoediting,thisshotisa
wide shottype andthe main pointtothisshot
was to introduce the maincharacterinthe
openingtitle sequence, I chose thisshotbecause
I likedthe characterlookingoutintothe distance,
withthe dark colourtone to the shot anywayit
was a goodpiece of footage toedit.
Thisshot isanotherscreenshotof some of my footage;
thisisa close upof a shoe walking, thisisalsoof the
maincharacter but of himwalkingpastthe shot,this
was one of our bestshotsbecause itlooked goodand
once we changedthe colourof this shot inthe editing.
We didcome across a slightchallenge whiletryingto
capture thisshot,the camerawouldnâtfocusand
because of the angle itwas at.

In thistask I had Produce a final editof myfilmopeningtitle sequence, once Ihadall my footage i
startedto editmyfootage of two differentsoftwareâsaftereffectandpremiere,aftereffectiswhere
I editedmyfootage andtitle creditandpremiere waswhereIputall of myeditedfootage together.
My final ideawassuccessful because itmatchedwhatI planned.Myfirstideawasto have a person
dressedinblackwalkingaroundnarrowcorridor,myfinal openingtitlematchedmyideawhichI
plannedinmypre-production.Iwantedtocreate a psychological horror,the filmingwentgoodandI
got all the footage I wantedto. I thinkmyfinal editof my filmopeningtitle sequence wasagood
overall edit, withthe audioaddedtoit, the audiowasa song calledsweetdreamswhichreally
helpedwithcreatingthe atmosphere andwentreallywellwiththe sequence, atthe endof my
sequence there isasoundeffectsof agunshot, thisaddedan effective impactanditalsoaddedto
the atmosphere. If Iwas too evercomplete thistaskagain,IthinkI wouldorganize the scenesinmy
footage more,Ihad a probleminfindingthe correctpropsforsome of my scenes,Iwouldfollowmy
storyboarda lotmore, and inthe final editof mytitle sequence Icouldof done a little bitbetter
whenitcame to makingthe footage flow alotmore easier.Butoverall itmatchedmyfirstideaand
it wasa successful task.
