Nando's Radio Ad Review Focuses on Humorous Style & Persuasive Message
1. Radio Advert Review
Nando’s
The Nando’s advert styleis quite
humorous. Theman presenting the
advertis talking in a funny foreign
accent, to relate to the
style/nationality of the food being
served. Itis a quite stereotypical
Hispanic/Mexican accent. This links
to the type of food Nando’s sell, with
it being spicy. Mexican food is
generally associated with being spicy, so Nando’s is relatable. There is no
celebrity used within the advert, so people listening can’t havea pre opinion
on them. This also meant the cost of the advert would be reduced, as the
person talking wouldn’task for as much money to speak in the advert.
The advertis factual, but is presented in a comedic way. The man doesn’t
speak in an aggressivemanner, but is almosttrying to persuadethe audience
to go to Nando’s. Theoverall messagefrom the advertwas to eat Nando’s.
This comes across as humorous and persuasive. Itwas importantthat the
advertwasn’tannoying, as people may then changetheir mind and presume
the productis no good. However sometimes annoying can make the advert
extremely memorable, e.g. Go Compare. There are music beds, tag lines,
repition of the productname, persuasivecontentand also codes and
conventions used within the advert.
The advert was promoting the company, and opening it up too many people by
saying they have an option for everyone. This is raising the brand awareness
for Nando’s. This links to the type of food Nando’s sell, with it being spicy.
Mexican food is generally associated with being spicy, so Nando’s is relatable.
There was conversationallanguage used, but the advert wasn’tin a
conversationalformat. The advert was justa man speaking to the audience,
but the way he came across was friendly and as though it was a conversation.
The tag line was “The Spirit of Nando’s”. The company was mentioned 3 times
within the 32 second advert, and there were no contact details mentioned
within the advert; justthe company name. There is a slight backing music used
towards the end of the advert. The music is like salsa/Mexican music, which is
2. fitting to the man’s accent. The main purposeof the advertis to promotethe
company and whatthey sell. The positives of the advert is that it catches your
attention, and is fitting to the subject. A negative is that it might be difficult to
understand and a bit annoying.
Frank
The style of the Talk to Frank
advertis factual, aggressiveand
serious. Itisn’taggressivein a
way of feeling threatened, but
more that they are trying to send
a messageand get a point across.
This is needed to make surethe
point is effective and comes
across as serious. Thetagline of the company is ‘Friendly, confidential drugs
advice’. Therefore, the messageneeds to come across seriously, butalso in a
friendly manner. The messages arequite repetitive, which will help it stay in
the audience’s head. The advert needs to make sureit doesn’t glamorize
drugs, and instead make them sound like the worstthings in the world. I feel
this advertdoes it well, as the voices you hear are chilling and sound real.
The overall messageof the advertis don’t do drugs as they are bad for you.
The voice used was a southern. Cockney accent. The voice sounds very working
class like, and relatable to everyday people. The advert was presented in an
informative way and part conversational. There wasn’ta tag line used within
the advert, but there was a clear messageof not to do drugs. Thepurpose
wasn’tto raisebrand awareness; I know this becausethey don’trepeat the
name of the company over and over or make themselves sound like the main
subjectof the advert. The advert is centred around the person who is affected
by the drugs. I think the main purposeof the advertis informational, making
surepeople know there is somebody to ring if they need help.
The company name was mentioned once within this advert, but there was
contact details mentioned. There was a website you can visit and also a
messageline in which you can text. There were minimal effects used within
the advert. There was a sound of somebody eating (which is whatis known to
happen after taking cannabis). There is also sound of a fight, and a
3. conversation. This is used to try and make the advert sound as realistic as
possible, to make people awareof the sound effects of taking drugs. This is to
try and stop as many people from doing it, and to paint a dark image over the
glamorization of drugs.
There is no music used that would be copyrightinfringed, so they don’t have to
worry aboutthat. They use all their own sounds to, so they don’t need to get
any permission for that aspect of their advert. The actors talking are clearly
talking off a script, so they have given them their permission to be in the
advert. There are no banned categories used within and no useof children, so
they don’t need to worry aboutthat either.
The advert is supposed to be informative, with the effects of taking drugs. It
informs you on the side effects, but also where you can seek help. A positive of
this advertis that it is very informative, and provides good information if you
need help. A negative aspect may be that it comes across as quite aggressive
and bullying you into it.
McDonalds
The style of the radio is slightly humorous, butvery cheerful. All the people
who talk in the advert are happy, and seem very positive about the company.
The advert is modern as its discussing
currentmatters and talking in a modern
text. The messagewas about McDonalds
breakfasts and how nice it is. They talk about
the options available and purposely get
people fromacross thecountry, to show
they serveacross the country. This helps
promote the company, as everyonewho
hears it will presumethere is a McDonalds near them. The voices used wereall
very happy and cheerful. They spokeupbeat about the advertisementand
were a mixture of male and female.
There were different British accents used within the advert, for example
Welsh and English. All the language was informativebut in an easy listening
way. The voices weren’t annoying or aggressive. Therewas no tag line, but the
advertwas solely focussed on McDonalds breakfast. Thecompany name was
mentioned 4 times, once by each different voice and then an extra time at the
4. end. There were a few details mentioned. For example, whatyou can havefor
your breakfast, e.g. brown sauceor ketchup.
There was also information that you can only get breakfastbefore10”30am,
which is important as they won’twantpeople turning up after that time asking
for breakfast. There wereno contact details mentioned, only the store itself.
There was a cheerful music played quietly in the background behind the
voices. Then there was also the famous McDonalds whistleat the end of the
advert.
The main purposeof this advertwas to inform customers of their breakfast
offer. This provided details of what they serveand when you can get it. The
advertalso mentioned that you can get breakfastfrom the drive through;
which a lot of people will want to do in the early mornings.
A positive about this advertis that it was a very positive advertand comes
across as polite and not annoying. This makes it easy to listen to, and probably
wouldn’tget annoyed after hearing it numerous times. A negative is that there
isn’t much information about the offer said within the advert. Itonly briefly
mentions the time you can buy the breakfastat the end of the advert, very
fast. This is the only information said about the breakfastdeal within the whole
advert.
