The document discusses the locations chosen for scenes in a short film about a character named Sam. It describes choosing Sam's bedroom to show how he is restless and no longer finds comfort in his room. A bus stop was used to show Sam coping through transportation. Scenes on a school bus aimed to portray Sam's instability through constant movement. Filming in a busy town allowed populated scenes while avoiding too much attention. The beach was selected as a place for thought and contemplation, with Lee-on-the-Solent chosen for its quietness and natural lighting. Sam's parents' kitchen was intentionally changed in setting, atmosphere and lighting to show where Sam feels most uncomfortable.
2. We chose to start our short film in the main character's bedroom, we
wanted to start it here to firstly show how changed Sam really and how it
is affecting him, for example when filming the scene we directed our
actor to be already awake in the scene, staring blankly at the ceiling. We
wanted to make it clear to the audience that Sam is restless he is plagued
by something that keeps him awake. We chose then to set off an alarm in
the room, instructing our actor to remain still, unaffected by the
loudness, the alarm pointless as he has already been awake for many
hours. We wanted to show how Sam no longer finds his room
comforting. The location we used was our main actors bedroom and
house, this increased the sentimentality in the scene, all of “Sam's”
belonging around him, only to be ignored by him. We also picked the
bedroom because we felt that a large amount of atmosphere was
created through the silhouettes created by the large window that takes
up the majority of the main wall. We also really wanted the room to be
already a boys, this is because we wanted it to be authentic not a girls
room changed to look vaguely like a boys.
3. Using the bus stop was the
start of us choosing to use
transport as a way for sam
to cope. we chose this
specific bus stop because
of how it is a touch more
remote than other bus stops
that are close to us and are
at our disposal, it is also
less populated on a daily
basis and we liked how it
was more traditional and
simple. it was very open
and allowed easy access
for filming.
4. We wanted to express how unstable Sam was
and we wanted to translate this through his
constant movement, he is never in two places
twice excluding the beach and his room which
are his two constants even though he no longer
feels safe in his room, it is a place where he is
secluded. we thought that the simplest and most
effective use of filming transport was taking
advantage of our school bus. filming was
surprisingly easy but it was a struggle to not
show the camera jostling too much, we
prevented this by using a tripod as we had done
for most of the film and also securing the tripod
and holding the camera, this worked really well.
we wanted to use a bus, not only because of its
accessibility but also because of how buses are
seen. traveling on a bus can be therapeutic to
many it is comforting, it is a way of getting away.
5. We chose to film in town because it was an easy way to film in
a populated area. we were initially worried about filming in
such a busy area, as we were worried about provoking too
much attention, causing people to be interested in what we
were doing, for example making eye contact with the camera.
however we did not find this to be an issue and were mostly
ignored by the general public. we chose this specific part of
town because of how open it is and how it is the beginning of
the high street and so it was populated but not overly so.

7. The beach was a decision that both of us made when we started talking about
doing the short film, we wanted their to be a scene by the beach and the reason for
this was because we felt the beach was such a perfect place for thought and
contemplation, we found that it would be a ideal place for sam to end up. we
looked at several beaches, varying in location and type. we both decided that we
wanted a stone beach, not only for filming purposes but also because stone
beaches seem to be more remote. we looked at brighton beach but found that it
was too far away and attracts a lot of tourists and people which would not be
suitable as noise and people in the background would be a problem. we also
looked at mudeford, this was more suitable as it was closer to us but again it was
not quite right as it was a sand beach and did not really hold the sort of mood and
atmosphere that we wanted. we finally decided on Lee-on-the-solent, which was
not too far way and our driver was accustomed to driving there. the beach was
perfect for our needs, it was extremely quiet whilst we were filming and we had
beautiful lighting all throughout the day; the beach was flat enough to allow us to
film easily and we felt as though it perfectly encompassed the world that we have
created in Sam’s head
This is the route we took to get down to
the beach. Due to the time it takes to get
down there, we had to use our time wisely.
As we are using the natural light, the
filming had to be done chronologically. we
split the filming into two parts, structuring
how we wanted the first part that was
going to appear in the film in the early
hours and then started filming the second
part after lunchtime and this gave us a
perfect conclusion as as the last scene in
the film is at the beach and we were
blessed with a beautiful sunset that we
positioned in the background of our final
shots.
8. We purposely chose to change the setting, atmosphere and lighting
of this specific scene. this is because, this is where Sam is most
uncomfortable, it is a completely different setting to what has been
shown in the film so far, it is personal and welcoming and yet this is
what distracts Sam so much, we also chose to match sam's parents
clothing with the lighting of the scene, as these colours are not in
sam's context. we used my kitchen as it was readily available to us
and also because of how different it is to the setting that we had
used already.
