Question one - In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

GENRE CONVENTIONS
Music
With the music, we used a steady transition from one piece of music to sounds effects and back to
different piece of music. This showed a calm atmosphere to start with but was still suitable for a
action film, the change into the different music showed trouble, and danger and was great for an
action film as it went smoothly. This I hoped would have drew the audience in and would make
them feel more involved with the product.

Lighting
The lighting within our two minute opening was quite typical as it had bright lights to draw the
audience in, we felt this was suitable for our film as we research 'lighting in a action two minute
opening' and the fed back we got was bright. We felt this would work great, for the first scene in
that two minutes as it was a calm atmosphere, but near the end of the two minutes we had a
slightly darker lighting to show there was danger and trouble about to happen. This is quite
typical of an action film.
Location
One the most important thing to consider for a film is the location. For our film, as a group Reel
Productions chose three different locations for the first opening two minutes. The locations we
chose were Castle Bromwich hotel, Kinghurst underpass and an office room within college. We
chose these locations as we felt the hotel was a great place for someone with a higher status to
stay in i.e. our drug lord, we thought the underpass was the ideal place for the drug lord and ‘hit-
people’ to meet. We chose the office room as we thought it was a good place to film in for our
‘lair’ as we didn’t want it to be a dirty place due to us having a female character in this room, but
we also wanted the ‘lair’ to look profession as our ‘hit-people’ knew what they was doing.

OPENING SEQUENCE CONVENTIONS
Mystery
In the opening first two minutes of a film, a lot shouldn't be told or given away, this gets the
audience with a little mystery straight away making them draw to the film as they want to know
what's honing to happen throughout the film. With our film we don’t give too much away and
leave the two minutes with the sound of a gunshot, this keeps the audience interested and wanting
to know what happens next or who was shot. We started our film typical with an equilibrium
where everything was normal and calm, but quickly changed it to a dark setting with guns being
fired.
Opening Titles
We used the font 'Hauser' in white to hit the audience and make it stand out, it also blended in
with the scenes as well which looked nice. We used the font 'Hauser' as we felt it was the most
suitable font out of all the fonts we researched, but we also felt it fitted with the genre of our film
quite nicely.
Introducing a key character
We introduced our main characters in our first opening two minutes by showing them getting
prepared for something, you later on see at the end of the two minutes. We switch from each
characters getting ready to build some suspense. We did this as we thought it would create some
mystery and keep the audience interested.
