Film Classification – Imperium
The BBFC standsfor the BritishBoard of FilmClassification.Theyare responsible forthe censorship
and national classification forthe cinemaandfilmsthatare published.The differentclassifications
for filmsare:U, PG, 12, 12A (thisisfor cinemas),15,18 and R18. The BBFC are the onesthat analyse
filmsandtheyputthemintothese age groups.The reasonwhytheydothisis to sheltercertain
people insocietysuchaschildrenfromthingssuchashorror or sex.If theydidn’thave these ratings
thenit wouldimpactthisgroupof people quite alot.
There are manythingsthat the BBFC takesintoconsiderationwhentheyanalyseafilm.However,
there are two that are the mostimportant.These are contextandthe tone and impactof the film.
Contextisan issue suchassex or violence thatispresentedanditiscentral tothe questionof its
acceptability.Forexample, violencecanbe realisticormore fantasybased.Tone andimpact isthe
overall tone of a filmmayalsoaffectthe classificationdecision.If the workhasa dark unsettling
tone’sthenthe ratingwill be higher.Discriminationisthe unjustorprejudicial treatmentof different
categoriesof people,especiallyonthe groundsof race,age,or sex.If the filmisseento be using
discriminative language/behaviourthenthe ratingwill thengoup. Drugsare illegal sotheyshould
not be seentobe encouragedduringthe film.Forexample youhave the filmTrainspottingwhich
has heroinaddictioninitwhichcausedittohave an 18 rating.Imitable behaviouristhe ideathat
somethingcanbe copied.Thisisa problemwhenitcomestothingssuch as violence suchasusinga
baseball batto hitsomeone asthiscouldbe recreated. Horroris the intense feelingof shockorfear.
Thisneedstobe takenintoconsiderationwhenyouare lookingatfilmsthatcouldscare some
membersof the public.The higherthe horrorfactor is,the higherratingitwill get.Violence is

rating. Language is obviouslysomethingthatneedstobe takenintoconsiderationassome kids
shouldnotbe surroundedbybad language.Some themesshouldnotbe accessedbychildrensuch
as sex and violence.The ratingwouldbe higherif these themesare involved. Sex isasensitive
subjectforthe youngeraudiencesastheydonot needtosee it so the rating wouldincrease.
In our filmopening,there will be afairamountof violenceanda theme of violence andverylight
themesof smoking.Imitable behaviour,languageanddiscriminationwillalsobe prominentinour
opening.ForthisreasonIwill rate our filma 15.
