1. Bryant Chinn
Work Description For Systems Support Coordinator (1205)
Typical Responsibilities Current Responsibilities
Level 4 (Current level)
Performs software evaluation and
support
I am responsible for evaluation of new software that is used
only in the Portland Regional office such as Nortel CallPilot
Desktop Messaging, PG&E Materials Database, PacifiCorp
PCRCMS 2.52, and others. This includes installing,
troubleshooting, documentation and upgrading for current O/S
which is currently Windows XP. I also support all other software
used by the firm in multiple departments that specialize in
graphics design and engineering. In addition to software, I also
am responsible for firmware upgrades. When new software is
used, I test, document and forward information to Software
Distribution to add to database.
Responsible for reviewing and
testing completed system
procedures
When systems are shipped from the build room, I set up and
troubleshoot any problems encountered. When necessary, I
reconfigure the systems- both laptop and desktops. When I
complete testing, I transfer user data and set up, then submit
IMAC form.
Level 5
Plans and coordinates activities of
one or more sites and is directly
responsible for scheduling and
assigning tasks.
My responsibilities include coordinating activities for multiple
BV office and also project offices. Currently the two main
offices I support are Lake Oswego and Salem, Oregon. I have
also assisted setting up project offices such as San Jose, CA
and the McLeod USA office in Eugene, OR. These duties
include such tasks as Video Conferencing/ISDN, Frame Relay,
Telecommunication (PBX), IBM Warranty Service provider,
Cisco switches, Remote Access, DSL/VPN, Sonic Firewalls,
Server Backup, maintenance and repair. This includes
programming of phone/voicemail. I also am responsible for
asset management and lease recovery for PC’s in multiple
offices. I repair, troubleshoot, upgrade, order, install, and
support peripherals.
Tracks problems or trends of
specific systems, follows up on
problem reports, makes
recommendations to prevent
future problems.
As a professional in Department 150- BVSG, I deal with the
Remedy database and Peregrine Asset management to track
problems. I also keep a separate log to track problems with
Laptops, Desktops, Servers and Nortel Option 11c PBX. I not
only make recommendations but take action to prevent future
problems and user downtime. For example, I have just
completed a Load 46 (data dump) on our phone system to
backup the database and synchronize with our CallPilot server
to prevent loss of data. I have also ensured this program is
scheduled to run automatically nightly at 1a.m.
Participates in hardware and
software selections.
My ability to assist in selection of computers is limited due to
the agreement between BVSG, BV and the office of the CIO.
As the BVSG IT support professional in the Lake Oswego
regional office, I evaluate user needs and assist in selection of
peripherals and software based on users needs.. This included
recommending the use of IBM Intellistations rather than
NetVista machines for CAD operators using dual monitors to
eliminate EMI.

2. Level 6
Troubleshoots operational problems
and provides technical
leadership
I participate in evaluation and troubleshooting of problems that
affect the performance of the entire office/company. This
includes such issues as having to rebuild an outdated Merlin
Legend voicemail server and identifying the need to purchase
an entirely new switch for the Lake Oswego office. Also
identified EMI problem with graphics workstations using dual
monitors with Matrox G450 video cards. Worked with BVSG
and IBM engineering to recommend using IBM Intellistations
rather than NetVista’s. Subsequently, the use of Intellistations
was approved by BV/BVSG/CIO.
Coordinates maintenance
schedules
I have coordinated schedules for Frame Relay, CSU/DSU
replacements, PBX replacement, Video Conference installs for
BV and also client sites (2), ISDN/VPN/DSL install and set up. I
have also had to schedule repairs for servers in this office- ie:
when the DLT backup tape drive went out and I had to pull and
disassemble unit to repair since it was out of warranty. Also,
when the power supply on the server went out and an
important proposal was being worked on over a weekend, I
scheduled and performed the necessary replacement of the
power supply.
I am currently coordinating the XP migration, lease recovery
and Windows 2000 server transition for the Lake Oswego
regional office.
Maintains contact with user
departments
I maintain contact with users in multiple offices who require
assistance and provide assistance whenever possible. For
instance, when a user (Joe Melsha) in San Jose could no
longer RAS in to check email, he called me to troubleshoot. He
informed me that he could not afford any downtime and could
not send the unit out to be repaired. After going through several
tests, I concluded that his PCMCIA modem/Ethernet needed to
be swapped. This worked and it was determined that user fried
modem when he plugged into digital rather than analog phone
port which exceeded 90 milliamps.
I also have assisted users in the Seattle, WA office by
reconfiguring systems they had problems with and returning
them overnight. I deal with BV and non BV users from many
offices.
Coordinates production requests,
orders supplies, schedules
hardware installation
As the only BVSG- IT professional in the Lake Oswego
Regional office, I take care of all of these duties and work with
two Service Coordinators in KC for both Water and Power
Delivery departments. Once hardware is ordered and received,
I do the installation. For example, IBM has recalled Fujitsu hard
drives and I am responsible for swapping hard drives and re-
imaging. I also have a system board for an IBM Thinkpad
A21M on its way that will be replaced by me as soon as it
arrives. This Thinkpad is being used by a BV Vice-President of
our Water Department.
Provides input for departmental
budget
Based on the needs of the Portland office, I meet with our
office manager bi-weekly and provide information to determine
the need for new systems. I regularly provide information used
for Capital Budget Planning.
