2. Case Study: Sight & Sound
Sight & Sound is a film magazine, published by the
British Film Institute, that targets a more niche
audience than other magazines. This is because it
reviews a lot more independent films including many
short films and so they would be an ideal magazine to
have our short film featured in. Additionally, in terms
of creative design, the magazine tends to have a more
simplistic layout suggesting a serious yet professional
tone which is something that Voices could take
advantage of, as mental health issues is something
quite serious. Unlike other magazines, Sight & Sound,
endeavour to understand the artistic vision of not only
the cast but the director and screenwriter as well. This
practice of looking in depth into films would also be
beneficial to our film.
If you take a look at the magazine cover to the left, the
main image is David Fincher, a critically acclaimed
director and producer. Some of most popular films are
movies such as Fight Club, Gone Girl and The Girl with
the Dragon Tattoo. He has also worked on a short film.
The fact that he was chosen to be on the front cover
shows that Sight & Sound value director input and so
their audience would be film lovers. This is an
audience that Voices could benefit from.
3. Case Study: Empire
Empire, as stated in the strapline, is the world’s
leading movie magazine in terms of publicity
and sales. Many blockbuster films such as Iron
Man 2, Harry Potter and Public Enemies have
featured on the front page of the magazine. In
terms of creative design, it normally has a busy
layout, the cover on the right being an
exception. Empire are arguably quite masculine
in their approach as a lot of movies that are
featured are superhero or mob movies that
target men. Colours that used are very dark
including reds and blacks which are usually
considered to be quite masculine. The front
covers are normally image heavy which suggest
that the content will focus on visual images
rather than the going into depth into the film.
However, I think that our short film can benefit
from the sheer amount of publicity gained
from featuring your film the magazine.
In regards to the cover on the right, it features
Daniel Craig who is in character as James Bond.
The James Bond franchise is one of the most
popular in the world which proves that Empire
are populist in its approach and coverage.
4. Case Study: Little White Lies
Little White Lies is an internationally
distributed movie magazine and very
different from the other magazines
analysed. Although, they share the same
primary audience as Sight & Sound, it is
often seen as an innovative and quirky
magazine. This is especially because of its
distinct look which features a cartoon
effect. Little White Lies target a niche
audience who are passionate about the
film. In terms of creative design, the
layout is very simplistic and features little
text. This suggests that magazine makes
an effort to keep in style and therefore
keep up with the cultural zeitgeist. This is
something that Voices, could use because
we want to target a more modern
audience.
Looking at the front cover to the left, we
can see that it features very little text and
makes use of the Little White Lies
distinctive style. The cover image is of
Michael Fassbender, who has recently
been linked to more independent films.
5. From the analysis, I can see that there are a variety of film
magazines that we can feature our film in. Although, Empire
has the obvious advantage of being the most popular
magazine, for our short film, I believe that Sight & Sound
would give us desired effect. As the audience is mostly film
lovers, they would raise a lot more awareness for our film in
their community.
