BLACK SCREEN
FADE IN:
TRISTAN, African- British teenager. Appears innocent and care-free.
TRISTAN (V.O)
“I wasn’t always like this-- The voices weren’t always there. Well
perhaps they were, but before I could always ignore them. Now I can
barely figure out which voice is the real me. They can’t all be me. --
Can they?”
MATT IRISAN (V.O)
(Softly)
“Wake up, wake up”
FADE OUT:
INT. TRISTAN’S BEDROOM – MORNING
This is the home of TRISTAN. He has been sleeping with his pyjamas on
and now it is time to get up and get ready to go to school. PHONE and
ALARM CLOCK are placed on the BEDSIDE TABLE.
BIRD’S EYE VIEW
TRISTAN’S open his eyes, voices transcend into ALARM CLOCK. The screen
blurs and the title is shown.
MEDIUM SHOT
TRISTAN turns off the ALARM CLOCK the PHONE rings. It is a TEXT from
MATT IRISAN, “I’m leaving in 10”, he reads it. He gets ups and places
feet on the ground and walks to the right.
FADE OUT:
INT. TRISTAN’S KITCHEN – MORNING
FADE IN:
BIRD’S EYE VIEW
TRISTAN pours coffee on a MUG.
CLOSE UP
The TOAST rises up from the TOASTER.
BIRD’S EYE VIEW
TRISTAN takes a toast from the plate.

EXT. OUTSIDE SCHOOL – MORNING
FADE IN:
LONG SHOT
TRISTAN and MATT IRISAN, are walking to SCHOOL.
MATT IRISAN is White-British teenager and is TRISTAN’S imaginary best
friend. Both are wearing smart suits.
TRACKING MEDIUM TWO SHOT
MATT IRISAN
Man, I hate Mondays-- we should’ve just skipped school today---
What lessons do we have today?
TRISTAN
(Sighs)
Matt Irisan, I’ve already told you. IT, Maths, Double English and--
I think a free
MATT IRISAN
Cool, where should I meet you at lun-
MATT IRISAN gets cut off as a student has run past and barges him.
TRISTAN
(Outraged)
Oi! Watch where you’re going!
TRISTAN turns to MATT IRISAN
(Concerned)
You good?
MATT IRISAN
(Wistful)
Yeah man, forget it-- it wouldn’t be the first time
Both TRISTAN and MATT IRISAN continue walking to school.
FADE OUT:
INT. MEDIA CLASSROOM – AFTERNOON
The next day, TRISTAN and MATT IRISAN are in MEDIA STUDIES a class
filled with COMPUTERES. The class is being taken by MR WALTER, a kind
MEDIA STUDIES teacher and is increasingly worried about TRISTAN.

TRISTAN has fallen asleep. MATT IRISAN IS SITTING DIAGONALLY ACROSS HIM.
FADE IN:
It is a black screen.
MATT IRISAN (V.O)
(Softly)
“Wake up, wake up”
MR WALTER has his hands on TRISTAN’s shoulders. TRISTAN’S eye open, and
sees Mr Walter talking to him in the lesson, his hands are off him.
TRISTAN POV / LONG SHOT
MR WALTER
Did you hear what I said? Please get into pairs.
TRISTAN
(Tired)
Oh yeah-- sorry I’ll just go work with--
The focus loses on MR WALTER and the camera focuses on MATT IRISAN as
TRISTAN glances in MATT IRISAN’S direction.
MR WALTER
Actually--
The camera then focuses back on MR WALTER.
Why don’t you go and work with Rosie?
STRAIGHT CUT
LONG THREE SHOT
TRISTAN looks perplexed and sighs but agrees nonetheless. He then
shuffles next to Rosie.
FADE OUT:
INT. TRISTAN’S BEDROOM – MORNING
TRISTAN wakes up in his bed again on another day. It is a black screen.
FADE IN:
MATT IRISAN
(Softly)
“Wake up, wake up”
CLOSE UP

TRISTAN opens his eyes and sighs. Voices transcend into alarm clock and
he turns it off.
MEDIUM SHOT
TRISTAN then gets up and places feet on the ground and walks to the
right.
FADE OUT:
INT. SCHOOL CANTEEN – LUNCHTIME
It is RAINING. TRISTAN and MATT IRISAN are eating lunch in the school
CANTEEN on their own table. The CANTEEN is quite small and packed.
PLATES, SANDWICHES, BOOKS, PAPER, PENS, and TABLES AND CHAIRS are used
as props.
FADE IN:
WIDE SHOT
Time-lapse of the rain.
HIGH ANGLE SHOT
Time-lapse of the school canteen.
OVER THE SHOULDER SHOT / SHOT REVERSE SHOT
MATT IRISAN
(Annoyed)
Man, media was so boring yesterday. I wish Mr Walter would stop hovering
over your shoulder--
TRISTAN
(Annoyed)
Yeah, I know right, I had to work with Rosie. She doesn’t do anything!
But sit there and stare at me weirdly, as if I’m about to attack her.
MATT IRISAN
Yeah----- do you ever get sick of it?
TRISTAN
(Confused)
What do you mean?
MATT IRISAN
Like-- look at all these people just judging us-- Do you ever feel like
not coming to school?

TRISTAN
I don’t know Matt… It’s just secondary school… I think we just have to
deal with it
LOW ANGLE SHOT
In the background, STUDENT #1 is taking pictures of the canteen and
captures a photo of TRISTAN for a project, and then looks at it weirdly.
MATT IRISAN
(Angry)
I’m sick of just having to deal with it-- To hell with these people--
Every day they come in with nothing but their pretentious smiles and
beady eyes! I mean, have you ever stopped to think, why it’s just us
being treated this way? Teachers and students both! They have no
respect----- Why should I come here just to fuel their humour?
TRISTAN
Yeah--- I guess--- When you put it that way, I kind of agree.
(Laughs)
You always make sense…… Sometimes I think we’re the same person.
Both of them look at each other for a few seconds but get cut off by a
student asking for the chair that MATT IRISAN is sitting on.
STUDENT #2
Can I borrow this chair?
TRISTAN
(Incredulous)
Obviously not!
STUDENT #2
(Weirded out)
Oh, okay then
TRISTAN
Now, I understand
TRISTAN and MATT IRISAN continue having a conversation but the focus
shifts to STUDENT #3, #4 and #5.
MEDIUM THREE SHOT
STUDENT #3
STUDENT #3 nudges STUDENT #4, and both STUDENT #4 and STUDENT #5 look
up.
Oi! Look at the nutcase!

(Judgemental)
He’s being weird again--
STUDENT #4
(Judgemental)
I know right! I think he needs to get some help.
FADE OUT:
INT. TRISTAN’S BEDROOM – MORNING
It is the next day. TRISTAN has been sleeping and now it is time to get
up and get ready to go to school.
FADE IN:
It is a black screen.
MATT IRISAN (V.O)
“Wake up, wake up”
ALARM CLOCK is ringing.
CLOSE UP
TRISTAN opens his eyes, and turns of the ALARM CLOCK. His phone rings
and a text have been sent from MATT IRISAN “Wanna skip school… something
different today?”
MEDIUM SHOT
TRISTAN gets up and places feet on the ground and walks to the right.
FADE OUT:
EXT. GREEN BRIDGE – MORNING
TRISTAN and MATT IRISAN skip school and have spent the whole day
together in the park.
FADE IN:
LONG SHOT
TRISTAN and MATT are at the bridge and then are walking beside a canal.
They are then walking up a hill.
MEDIUM TWO SHOT / PANNING DOWN
TRISTAN
Did you see Leonardo DiCaprio finally won an Oscar last night?

MATT IRISAN
Oh yeah-- but to be honest, I think that he should have won it for
Shutter Island.
OVER THE SHOULDER TWO SHOT / HIGH ANGLE SHOT
TRISTAN
(Interested)
What is it about?
MATT IRISAN
Oh, so it’s basically a film where he’s confined to an island but he
ends up having schizophrenia.
MATT IRISAN’S POV / MEDIUM SHOT
TRISTAN
How common do you think that is?
TRISTAN’S POV / MEDIUM SHOT
MATT IRISAN
What? -- Schizophrenia? I don’t know, let me Google it.
LONG SHOT
MATT IRISAN gets his phone out and searches the statistic. Stranger is
walking up the hill.
MEDIUM TWO SHOT
MATT IRISAN
It says here that-- there are over 250,000 diagnosed cases in Britain.
TRISTAN
(Shocked)
Wow, that’s a lo-
They get interrupted by the STRANGER.
STRANGER
(Shouting)
Hey, what are you doing?
TRISTAN and MATT IRISAN whip their heads towards the stranger and they
both stand up and face the STRANGER.
MEDIUM THREE SHOT
STRANGER
This is private property! -- Shouldn’t you be in school?

OVER THE SHOULDER OF STRANGER
TRISTAN
(Slightly angry and annoyed)
Mind your own business, we’re just leaving!
TRISTAN and MATT starts to walk away from the stranger, and then both
turn around. Both of them then starts to walk next to the STRANGER.
STRANGER
We?
WIDE THREE SHOT
TRISTAN
(Angry)
Yeah? Problem?
STRANGER
Oh look, just leave!
STRANGER gestures the direction to leave, but nudges MATT IRISAN.
Or I’ll call the police!
TRISTAN
(Shouts)
Don’t touch him!
STRANGER
(Confused)
What?
TRISTAN
(Shouts)
I said, don’t touch him!
STRANGER
Right, that’s it!
STRANGER gets phone out and dials 999
TRISTAN
No, don’t do that!
TRISTAN’S POV / MEDIUM TWO SHOT
MATT IRISAN
Come on Tristan, let’s just leave

STRANGER
Excuse me-
THE SOUND OF THE DIALOUGE LOWERS.
MATT IRISAN
(Shouting)
Come on, come on, come on
STRANGER continues arguing, MATT IRISAN is trying to convince TRISTAN to
run. TRISTAN doesn’t want to. His vision blurs, we can hear his
heartbeat and his breathing.
MEDIUM THREE SHOT
TRISTAN has a panic attack and falls to the ground.
FADE OUT:
INT. WHITE THERAPY ROOM – AFTERNOON
After collapsing TRISTAN has been taken to a rehab centre. His therapist
is DR KHAN, a Pakistani-British in her late 20s, tries to help TRISTAN
to come to terms with his mental illness.
FADE IN:
It is a black screen. Tristan opens his eyes and it is a window from his
room. He is sitting on his bed and is facing the window. Dr Khan is in
the room, sitting down and is talking to TRISTAN.
TRISTAN POV / MEDIUM SHOT
TRISTAN
And that’s when the police came and took me here--
DR KHAN
Do you know why you’re here?
WIDE SHOT / SILOUHETTE
TRISTAN
No-- and I don’t want to either, just let me go!
DR KHAN
(Ignores TRISTAN’S remark)
Alright can you turn around please and we’re gonna talk about Matt
MEDIUM SHOT
TRISTAN TURNS AROUND AND FACES DR KHAN.

Matt Irisan? -- He’s my best friend
OVER THE SHOULDER OR DR KHAN
DR KHAN
You guys are close?
TRISTAN nods his head.
How did you meet?
CLOSE UP OF TRISTAN FIDGETING
TRISTAN
(Fidgeting and Thinking)
Uhhmmmm-- I can’t remember
OVER THE SHOULDER OR DR KHAN
DR KHAN
Okay, do you know when is his birthday is?
TRISTAN makes no eye contact with DR KHAN and he is looking down
fidgeting.
TRISTAN
(Thinking)
Uuuhhmm -- I don’t know
DR KHAN
Alright, what about his favourite colour?
TRISTAN
Uhhmm -- I don’t know
DR KHAN
His parent’s names?
TRISTAN looks up at DR KHAN with frustration.
TRISTAN
(Getting frustrated)
I’ve told you already, I-don’t-know!
DR KHAN
Alright, do you know where does he live?

TRISTAN
(Shouts)
I don’t know, okay?! -- Why do you care?
DR KHAN
I’m just trying to get to understand your friendship
TRISTAN
Or-- you are doubting it!
OVER THE SHOULDER OF TRISTAN
DR KHAN
(Sighs)
Look –- don’t you think it’s strange that the only thing you know about
him is his full name?
TRISTAN
Uuuhhh -- No?
DR KHAN
Clearly, there’s a significance behind that. I think that maybe you were
trying to convince yourself of his existence?
TRISTAN
Uhhmmm -- What are you talking about?
HIGH ANGLE / OVER THE SHOULDER SHOT OF DR KHAN
DR KHAN writes “Matt Irisan” on a piece of paper, but writes it in the
order of “I am Tristan”, showing that it is an anagram.
DR KHAN
What does that say, Tristan?
TRISTAN
Matt Irisan?
CLOSE UP / ZOOMS INTO TRISTAN’S EYES
There is a series of flashbacks confirming this.
CLOSE UP / ZOOMS OUT OF TRISTAN’S EYES
Then it cuts back to the therapy room. TRISTAN sheds a tear.
TRISTAN POV / BLURRY / MEDIUM SHOT
MATT IRISAN is holding the sign, “I am Tristan”.
FADE OUT:
