Part 2 print work
1.
2. WHAT I WILL DO
•I WILL ANALYZE THE CODES AND CONVENTIONS OF POSTERS AND
FRONT COVER MAGAZINES, AND DEMONSTRATE HOW I USED THIS
KNOWLEDGE TO CREATE MY OWN PRINT WORK .
3. TARDIGRADE
• THIS IS OUR TARDIGRADE, MAGAZINE, TO MAKE THIS
I HAD TO RESEARCH THE CODES AND CONVENTIONS
OF MAINSTREAM FILM POSTERS, THIS INCLUDES THE
IMAGE, TITLE AND MAST HEAD.
4. IMAGEAs you can see, I have taken direct
inspiration from World War Z’S
magazine. This image in the magazine
is composed of Brad Pitt, this image
takes most of the magazine front cover
space, I also tried to follow this
convention. Furthermore, Brad Pitt
looks at the camera with some worried
face expression, when taking pictures
for our magazine I remained focus
with the camera and also added an
serious face expression reflecting my
character, as this is a common
convention among mainstream
magazines.
5. MAST HEADS
Mastheads is the most boldest and largest font on the magazine. It is located towards the top centre of the
magazine, this is so that the audience can easily identify with the magazine. The Masthead is usually covered by
the centre image.
6. BASED ON THE CONVENTIONS WE SAW, THE
SUBJECT IMAGE USUALLY OVERLAPS OVER
THE MAGAZINE NAME AS WHAT THE
MAGAZINE S PROMOTING IS MORE
ATTRACTIVE.
7. TITLE Titles are usually positioned
towards the lower thirds of the
magazine and are the second
largest heading, however, I am
Legends magazine doesn’t follow
this convention, we choose to stick
to it as we thought it was more
visible there. The titles font and
texture usually reflects the tone of
the film, ‘I am Legends’ title looks
more futuristic, which relates to
the story line. However, I decided to
keep our title as the same as the
trailer to create a ‘brand image’
and synergy between all our
products. I think our title reflects
our film content due to the
markings on the letters which
suggest violence.
8. COVER STORY LINES
Cover story lines are less bold and
are usually made with less vibrant
colours than compared to the
masthead and film title. These are
usually positioned around the far
left or right of the magazine, and
have info o other movies and the
contents within.
9. WE ALSO FOLLOWED THIS CONVENTION….
Here, I also positioned the cover lines to the left and right
of the magazine. The font s also fairly small and contains
information on what the magazines has to offer.
My name is bold as it is a popular feature for the
magazine to include content on the very actor on the
front page, their names would be highlighted so
audiences and fans instantly know and are interested.
10. MAGAZINE CONSTRUCTION
• WE FIRST CREATED THIS MAGZINE WITH THE PURPOSE THAT AUDIENCES
ARE EASILY ABLE TO FIND THE TONE AND GENRE OF THE MAGAZINE AND
MOVIE. WE ENSURED THIS BY USING THE COLOUR RED A LOT, WHICH
CONNOTES DANGER AND BLOOD. THIS IS ALSO ENHANCED BY THE FACT THE
PROTAGONIST HAS BLOOD ON HIS JUMPER. WE INTENDEDLY MADE THE
BACKGROUND LOOK ‘ROUGH’ SO THAT THE AUDIENCE UNDERSTAND THE
NATURE OF THE FILM, THIS IS ALSO SUPPORTED WITH THE PROTAGONISTS
‘SERIOUS’ FACE.
11. COLOUR SCHEME
As our film is of the zombie apocalyptic genre,
we decided to use dark colours, to reflect
blood. Our film trailer advertises violence and
gore, so we really tried to show this through
the magazine. The background is dark ‘dirty’
red this reflects the destruction of the post
apocalyptic world.
12. We had this idea after coming across this magazine cover of
the same genre. I was inspired by the ‘futuristic’ lay out and
cover scheme which reflects the sc-fi aspect of the film.
However, I wanted to focus on the gore and horrors of the
zombies hence we made our layout more dark.
13. SKYLINE
In our magazine we did not include the magazine skyline, we did not conform to
this convention because we thought the information we had was sufficient.
Furthermore, adding a skyline would result in making the magazine masthead
smaller.
14. BARCODE
The barcode, although subtle is also a convention of front cover
magazines. Its usually located towards the lower right or left third of
the magazine. We also included this and placed it at the bottom right of
the magazine,
16. The main character or subject, is usually within the centre of
the poster and takes up most of the space so that the
audience know certainly who it character is the actors name
which is usually located towards the upper third of this poster
(in this case Hollywood actor Brad Pitt), This is to attract
(mainstream) fans who are into his acting career.
17. When constructing the poster we also decided to
follow this convention of adding the actors name at
the very top of the magazine. We made sure the font
was large and bold so that our audience can clearly
recognise the name, this was also executed in our
magazine.
18. FILM TITLE AND
BILLIN BLOCK
• FILM POSTER TITLES ARE USUALLY
LOCATED EITHER IN THE CENTER OR
LOWER THIRD OF THE POSTER, AND IS
THE BIGGEST FONT ON THE PAGE.
FURTHERMORE, THE TITLE USUALLY HAS
ITS OWN UNIQUE FONT COMPARED TO
THE OTHER TEXT ON THE POSTER SO
CATCHES THE AUDIENCES EYE.
19. In all film posters the billing block is located towards the bottom of the poster, and has the smallest text of all. The
colour which is used does not stand out in the poster as it is just information about the cast and producers. The billing
block also includes the production company. The boldest part of the billing block is when the movie will be released,
which is big enough just for audiences to not miss out.
20. We also placed the film title at the bottom of the
poster. Furthermore, we also made our title a
different font so it stands out as it is a regular
convention. Our billing block includes our own
production company logo, we included this after
analysing other magazines. We also included
the release date and highlighted It in red so the
audience can the most important information.
21. COLOUR SCHEME
From analyzing most horror
posters, the main colours that
are used is black and red. This is
because black connotes for ‘fear
of the unknown’, the darkness
demonstrates an evil tone.
Furthermore, red is very
prominent as it represents blood
and violence. Even though our
film has many sub genres, we
wanted to showcase the horror
aspect of the film. Due to this we
also used this same colour
scheme to demonstrate this to
the audience.
22. TAGLINE
The tagline gives information about what the film is about, the two taglines
that inspired me were in red , I thought this was clever as It represented the
blood within the film and also gave small information on what the key selling
pint of the film is. This is usual convention in film posters which I decided to
adopt in my poster. My film concept is about the destruction of mankind
therefore we made the tagline ‘Is this the end of humanity’.
23. THE IMAGE
A convention of a horror poster image is to include the
image of the villain. This is so the audience can easily
identify with what the film is about and even
understand the plot.
Similarly, i wanted to show the audience the threat of
our film plot. So we decided to show the main
character being attacked by a hand of a zombie.
