SMALL GROUP INTERACTIVE LEARNING
 Small group teaching has become more popular as it
encourages student learning.
 The tutor should use a different set of skills very
interesting and captivating the students attention towards
both learning goals and learning process.
 Lecturing to a large group for a long time may not be
motivating instead small group learning would help children
to involve and to be more active to learn the subject matter.
2021/5/25
DR. C. BEULAH JAYARANI 3
The tutor should provide a learning environment and an opportunity for students
to obtain a deep understanding of the material.
Biggs(1989) states that in order to gain deeper learning 4 components are
Important
 Motivational context
 Learner activity
 Interaction with others
 Well structured knowledge

SMALL AND LARGE GROUP INTERACTIVE
LEARNING METHODS
Silent Reflection:
 First raise a question to the students and give them few
minutes to think about the problem.
Then ask them to write down their ideas on a note pad.
Then ask them to share their ideas with their peer before moving
into a discussion phase.
This technique suits for quieter students and ensure that
everyone has the opportunity to provide feedback or solution to
the problem. 2021/5/25

spreading virus in China
and it's is symptoms and
precaution for it?

Round:
Teacher goes on rounds to each group and encourage them to
respond or speak out their opinion or give their views on the
topic.
The teacher should speak politely in a friendly manner
so that the quiet nervous students also come forward
to speak out their opinion.
For example: positive reinforcement like Very Good, some of
them trying to speak these are some of the tactics to make
students active participants.

Three minutes each away:
Students are put in pairs and asked to speak for 3 minutes on a
given topic.
It's an excellent way of getting students to articulate ideas.
Even the quieter students are given opportunities to speak and
be heard.
Nervous students who don't involve speaking in a large crowd
come forward to speak with the partners.
This one to one interaction also develops the art of listening and
prepares them for other activities too with self confidence.

Buzz Group:
Buzz group is putting students in pairs or small groups
of 3 to 5 and get them involve in an activity where they
can talk and create a hubbub of noise as they work .
Buzz groups are a technique most commonly used in
workshops. Participants break into pairs or small groups
and have a short, intense discussion on a defined
question.
They can give a feedback on the activity to the whole
group on a flip chart.

CONTD.,
Eg., We can give each group different worksheets and
ask them to work on it and ask them questions related to
it.
We can conduct activities like matching words with
vitamins and deficiency, pocket cards like scientists
name and lot of activities to develop students cognitive
skills.
It is an interactive process which involves sharing of
opinions, increased creativity and critical thinking.

SMALL GROUP INTERACTIVE LEARNING
ADVANTAGES
By working together, students learn from
one another and become less dependent
Students learn from the mistakes
Peer group pressure help to motivate
students to prepare for class
Group solutions are often far superior to
individual solutions
The instructor can spent more time with
those students who need attention.
DISADVANTAGES
Group work is time consuming and
difficult to calculate
 The physical setting of most classroom
work against group work
Instructor must be prepared to cope up
with the unexpected event
Some group need more supervision than
the others
Group activities need to be planned and
explained carefully.
